The Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program has been struggling with a number of challenges for years. Two plans to create an updated case management system have failed since 2015, with a total cost of $26 million, and the contract for the third attempt isn't expected until March. VR&E counselors are understaffed and undertrained. The program lacks data on outcomes for veterans, especially those who leave the program unfinished. Too few veterans are being educated on the benefits available to them, and some of those benefits are too difficult to qualify for. That's why some members of Congress and Veterans Support Organizations think a fourth administration within the Department of Veterans Affairs is necessary to add focus on transition, employment and education.

Lawmakers Ask Hochul To Fully Fund Veterans Support Program by WSKG News
In this Veterans Day 2021 special edition of Overdrive Radio, we sat down with active-duty servicemember and small fleet owner Rob Ahlers, currently serving under the Chief of Logistics for the Pentagon out of D.C. With two military vets as partners, Ahlers launched the private MSR Transport Services with an intention to help fellow vets transition to civilian careers in trucking, and since the start in 2014 MSR's up to more than 30 power units, some owner-operated, hauling mostly expedited and Department of Defense freight with the fleet. MSR is the latest recipient of Daimler Trucks' Cleveland, North Carolina plant's Ride of Pride series of patriotically decorated rigs, a 2022 Western Star 5700 XE pictured in the thumbnail with this podcast -- find more pictures from MSR via the post that houses this podcast: https://www.overdriveonline.com/15281342 What's Veterans Day mean to you? For Ahlers, in part it's opportunity to continue to provide gainful employment to a bevy of military vets hauling for the company. Hear much more about Ahlers and company's bedrock business here, but also his reflections on the bedrock importance of Veterans Day. Navy Veteran Nelson Eddy Rivera, now Director of the Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services, is interviewed about the many ways both man and women veterans in Dutchess Country (or other New York State Counties) can get help. Every country in the state has been mandated since 1946 to have veterans’ services available. These include help in filing disability claims or obtaining educational benefits. The division also helps surviving partners of veterans; among other ways, the division helps arrange funerals, which for honorably discharged members of the armed services will include at least three soldiers, who will fold a memorial flag and play taps on a bugle. One special benefit for veterans in Dutchess County is a discount card, honored at many stories around the county. Mandatory Fund Podcast host Blake and members of the Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program join us for this special episode. Sharing the story of the non-profit organization are Miranda Hope, granddaughter of late Bob Hope, retired US Navy Captain John Funk, and US army veteran turned assistant art professor Regan Vasconcellos. “It provides one-on-one employment transition services to veterans leaving the military for civilian work.” - Miranda Hope on the Easter Seals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program Miranda Hope - A Hands-on Team Miranda shares that the service’s being one-on-one is so critical to the organization’s mission and success. They don’t cut corners and generalize veterans when coming up with the best employment plan for them. The team, spearheaded by John Funk, listen closely and work in order to figure out what is meaningful for each one of their clients. John Funk - A Military Story Director of operations John Funk relays twenty-eight years’ worth of narrative as part of the Navy. Graduating from the Naval Academy in 1984, he went off to flight school to become a helicopter pilot. He commanded the Sea Hawk to fend off Soviet submarines during the Cold War and the HSL-44 Swamp Fox Squadron in Florida. He was able to work with thousands of folks in serving the country, then moved on to take government positions typically chosen by senior marine officers. “While it was a really great opportunity for me, it wasn’t really the right fit. I wasn’t finding myself fulfilled in the sense of purpose that I had had when I was on active duty.” - John Funk This is when John decided to admit to himself that he needed to look for something else. What Sealed the Deal John remembers not having an awful time when he transitioned, all thanks to the privilege of having a wide network of support available for him as a senior officer. He was able to work with individuals he interacted with and met throughout his career. According to him, this is precisely the reason why he joined the non-profit sector. “I wanted to make sure that sailors of all ranks, marines of all ranks and positions had the same privileges and connections and network that I had when I made my transition.” - John Funk on joining Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program To learn more about the foundation, what transition into the non-profit sector is like, and to hear about Regan’s personal success story, download and listen to the episode!
