Remote and wild, Antarctica was once solely the domain of hardcore explorers. As the continent becomes more accessible, science and tourism are expanding – but does this come with an environmental cost? His Antarctic research covers many aspects of biodiversity variation and its conservation. Owing to his interest in the science-policy interface, for many years he represented the international Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), of which he was also President (2016-2021), at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings, providing scientific advice on a broad range of environmental and science policy matters.Dr Jaimie Cleeland is an early career scientist working on Southern Ocean fisheries at the Australian Antarctic Division. Facebook Twitter Instagram   The Outdoor Biz Podcast   Please give us a rating and review HERE   Climber and Motorcycle Adventurer Dave Garces rode his bike from Quito to Aconcagua, climbed it, and rode back. He tells us about that adventure, his quest to do the 7 summits in this style, and his business Ecuador Bike Rentals.   Show Notes Introduction to the outdoors Well, my outdoor hobby would be motorcycling. Adventure motorcycling and climbing itself started with my dad. When I was two years old, he basically took me to the highest mountains here in Ecuador, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, over 18,000 feet high. So that's how I started it. Then basically I learned how to ride my first motorcycle when I was 14 and I haven't stopped since. The Seven Summits I used to work in the oil business since 2006, which basically allowed me to travel around the world. I've been in 83 countries so far. Basically, by me working in one of these countries, I just decided to start these seven summits when I first heard of it. So I've climbed Kilimanjaro for Africa. I've climbed the Elbrus for Europe and recently in 2019, I did Aconcagua for South America.  I'm missing basically four more summits, Denali for North America. Everest for Asia and the Carstensz Pyramid for Oceania and the Vinson Massif for Antarctica. Riding a Motorcycle to all Seven My plan now is basically to start all over again to make it count and to be honest for one thing. The second thing is I really like to take this opportunity. I mean, I have to ride the world on a motorcycle. So that being said, I have very good chances to accomplish what I'm looking for. The first attempt I had was Aconcagua in December 2019. Which is basically the closest. Still, it was around 13,000 miles back and forth in four weeks. And also included nine days of climbing. Aconcagua It was the beginning of the project. If I couldn't have made it, then that was the end of it. It's not the easiest or the hardest either of all seven, but for one it is the cheapest and the second is the closest. And one thing is physical strength, but the other one is mental strength. It was basically four and a half weeks being by myself, you know, inside of my helmet and then just walking on my own. All of these thoughts, you know, can drive you crazy. Ecuador Bike Rentals I'm working at the company as a chief mechanic and a tour guide. The company is based in Quito. Ecuador. We have another branch on the coast. So what we do basically is motorcycle rentals, guided tours, self-guided tours, and custom-tailored tours. You tell us for instance, what's your budget and how long you have on the time frame. And then we build an adventure for you. We have intercoms connected helmet to helmet. So we basically speak with the whole party telling them what they're seeing. If there is anything going on in front of the road. You know, any advice when it comes to riding itself. So that's the guided tour, the self-guided tour we give them a pre-program GPS with all the stops, hotels, and activities are included and the guys just follow the route and just go whenever they want to go and they stop and eat whatever they want to eat and so on. We'll build a tour for you to go birdwatching. And we have class three and class four-plus rivers and have done some tours for those who want to go kayaking and river rafting. Advice for getting into the Outdoor Adventure Biz The main thing is, do not procrastinate. That's the worst thing you can do. I was talking to people after March 20th, 2020, and they regretted that trip they weren't able to take. Or that business, they couldn't startup. One of our clients, he was supposed to come and he just kept on the delaying and delaying. The reason he wanted to come and do the trip here in echo was that he had cancer. And unfortunately, he passed away without doing this trip. Favorite piece of outdoor gear under a hundred dollars Gore-Tex socks Giving back Ecuador Bike Rental is also helping Prosonrisa. So we're basically directing 30% of the revenue straight to these causes. Whether it's for educational material or kids who need organ transplants. Whatever you guys can do to help us out. Come enjoy Ecuador, have the ride of your life. And in the meanwhile, you are helping these people. Guest Bio:Jordan Romero is an American mountain climber who, on May 22, 2010, became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. He was 13 years 10 months 10 days old when he reached the summit. Romero was accompanied by his father Paul Romero, his step-mother Karen Lundgren, and three Sherpas, Ang Pasang Sherpa, Lama Dawa Sherpa, and Lama Karma Sherpa. The previous record for youngest to climb Everest was held by Ming Kipa of Nepal who was 15 years old when she reached the summit in 2003. He was inspired to climb the tallest mountains of each continent when he saw a painting in the hallway of his school that had the seven continents' highest mountains. He climbed the Vinson Massif in December 2011, breaking the record of George Atkinson being the youngest climber in the world to complete the Seven Summits, at the age of 15 years, 5 months, 12 days. It is likely that, barring changes in national policies, Romero's record will remain unbeaten, as Nepal does not issue licences for under-16s to climb Everest, and subsequent to Romero's ascent, China introduced similar restrictions on the Tibetan side.

Maturepreneurial Podcast: Interviews with Older Entrepreneurs | Online Business Tips | Learn From Those Who Have Succeeded

Martin Pazzani is a global business decathlete, a serial entrepreneur, and a mountaineer. He is also a strategist, marketer, CEO, company founder, speaker, advertising guy, management consultant, and communications architect. His website tagline perhaps says it best: Always seeking another summit. Corporate achiever Martin has worked on both on the corporate side and on the ad agency side for large corporations and startups across multiple categories and on six continents. Before he began his career in business, he earned three college degrees in just over five years: a B.A. in Psychology, a B.S. in Marketing, and an M.B.A. He is a "classically trained" chief marketing officer (CMO) who cut his teeth in consumer goods and services businesses. Martin's career features some extraordinary highlights: He spent 13 years at Diageo (fka Heublein), where he rose from an entry-level position to the top marking job at 34 years old to grow global brands like Smirnoff Vodka, Jose Cuervo Tequila, Black Velvet Canadian Whisky, and many more. He was the first CMO of Bally and Crunch, where his successful turnaround of a very troubled operation produced record setting increases in revenue, new memberships, consumer awareness, and interest; the magnitude and speed of which led to a Harvard Business Review case study. He spent seven years heading Foote, Cone and Belding agency's global strategic consulting group, The Chess Team: marketing strategists for Kraft, SC Johnson, American Express, Citibank, US Postal Service, Samsung, Tropicana and many others across a 100-office network, with extensive work in Chicago, San Francisco, Hong Kong, London and South America. He served as CEO of bi-coastal Elias Arts (EA), the world's most awarded music agency, where he reunited, transformed and grew a fragmented company against the tide of a declining industry. By pioneering the new discipline of audio brand identity for major clients like American Express, Apple, Audi, Cisco, Citi, Coke, Gatorade, Infiniti, McDonald's, Nike, Yahoo, and by putting the company on a path toward full-service music holding company, EA was able to diversify into Latino music and music licensing and thrive in a very troubled category. Bold new horizons Today, Martin is a serial entrepreneur, immersed in three areas that each requires a balance of entrepreneurship, strategic vision, and a penchant for re-imagining the future. Craft Spirits: In 2009, Martin started a craft spirits company, United Craft Distillers, to provide advisory services, world class marketing, and sales expertise to hyper-growing, micro-distilled, small-batch spirits brands. This has evolved into Master Distillers Inc. which handles sales and marketing for T1 Tequila Uno (named 2016's Best Craft Tequila), Tears of Llorona tequila, Mezcal Sacrificio, Varan Mezcal Coffee Liqueur, and others. Fitness: In 2012, Martin joined forces with investors, fitness operators, and healthcare experts to develop the company that became Act!vate Brain & Body, where they are re-inventing fitness as upstream preventive healthcare for the baby boomer generation. (Act!vate will re-launch in 2017-18 with geographic expansion to follow later in the year.) Vaping: In 2014, Martin began to explore the fast growing vaping sector, which is proving to be a powerful anti-smoking enabler and a disruptor to the status quo. This led to the creation of Cloud 10 Brands and Silver City Vapors, a fast-growing venture to build a national retail and e-commerce vaping company. An oft-published writer and panelist on marketing, branding, competitive strategy, and music, Martin gave a TED University talk at the 2008 TED Conference in Monterrey, CA on The Power of Music. He has led seminars in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, London, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Venezuela, and at the Cannes Lions and Dubai Lynx advertising festivals. His articles have been in Advertising Age, Billboard, Brandweek, Marketing Daily, and SHOOT Magazine. Physical prowess Martin has always been drawn to overcome difficult challenges. He's climbed to the summits of major mountains on all seven continents. He has explored Antarctica, Easter Island, Ngorongoro Crater, the Equatorial Rain-forests, the deserts of United Arab Emirates, Mexican volcanoes. He is a former F2000 racing driver where he developed a keen appreciation for the value of precision, speed and high performance. He is the 146th human being to stand on the summit of the very remote Vinson Massif, the highest point in Antarctica. He has climbed both The Matterhorn and Mont Blanc five times each. Showing no sign of slowing down at 61, Martin is currently on a mission to climb all forty-eight 4000-foot peaks of New Hampshire as he trains to climb Mt. Everest in 2019. Recent medical testing reveals that Martin's lungs are 40% larger than a normal human being’s, which accounts for his being very good at walking uphill for long distances with a heavy pack on his back! After at least 100,000,000 uphill steps, he's been persuaded to turn his transformation from a corporate animal to a serial entrepreneur into a book, The Mountains Made Me An Entrepreneur, on target for publication in early 2018.

Her transcontinental summit quest started when she reached the top of our very own Mt. Kosciuszko in 2005 and then Tanzania’s Mt. Kilimanjaro the same year, followed by Mt. Elbrus in Russia in 2006, Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina in 2007 and both Mt. McKinley in Alaska in 2009and Vinson Massif in Antarctica in 2013. Only Everest awaits her. Unfortunately luck hasn’t been on her side…yet. In 2012 she positioned for her first attempt but bad weather made the Khumbu Icefall too dangerous, again she made another attempt in 2014 but the mountain closed following a tragic icefall avalanche that killed 16 Sherpas. In April this year, she was readying for her 3rd attempt, this time from the Tibetan side, but the sheer devastation of the catastrophic Nepalese Earthquake once again closed the mountain and rocked the climbing community to its core with the loss of so many lives. Annie’s 7th summit awaits another season.
