To attain simplicity in preaching is of the utmost importance to every minister who wishes to be useful to souls. Unless you are simple in your sermons, you will never be understood, and unless you are understood, you cannot do good to those who hear you. Of course, the first objective of a minister should be to preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as it is in Jesus. But the next thing he ought to aim at is for his sermon to be understood, and it will not be understood by most of his congregation if it is not simple. To attain simplicity in preaching is by no means an easy matter. I fear a vast proportion of what we preach is not understood by our listeners anymore than if it were Greek. When people hear a simple sermon or read a simple tract, they are apt to say, "How true! How plain! How easy to understand!" and might assume that anyone can write in that style, but are unaware of the diligence required to maintain simplicity. Simplicity in preaching is not childish preaching. If we suppose that the people like that sort of sermon, we are greatly mistaken. If our listeners get the impression that we consider them a parcel of ignorant folks for whom any kind of "infant's food" is good enough, our chance of doing good is lost altogether. People do not like even the appearance of condescending preaching. They feel we are not treating them as equals, but as inferiors. Human nature always dislikes that. They will at once put up their backs, stop their ears, and take offense. Finally, coarse or vulgar preaching is not needed. It is quite possible to be simple and yet to speak like a gentleman with the demeanor of a courteous and refined person. It is an utter mistake to imagine that uneducated and illiterate men and women prefer to be spoken to in an illiterate way by an uneducated person. As a rule, people, no matter their position in society, only tolerate vulgarity and coarseness in the pulpit when they can get nothing else.

In this episode I talk through some additional thoughts and recap some topics from last week's episode with Joel Brueseke on the law abolished. In addition to what I talk about in this episode, my biggest question concerning this issue of the law is simply "Why?" Why do we tend to think the law, defined in scripture as "weak and useless", and given only to a specific people group in another obsolete covenant, is in some way binding on us today in the New Covenant? Some theological traditions slice the law up into sections in order to get some of it into the New Covenant, calling part of it "moral law" and insist that only this "moral" section applies to us in the New Covenant. But why do we tend to be so preoccupied with bringing Moses into the New Covenant? Where did this come from and why is it there? I also correct something that I believe I said in error in the last episode during my conversation with Joel. This has to do with being dead to the law. Welcome back to another episode On As The Rotor Turns! *Note Part 1 of 2 episode description is at the bottom to refresh your memory of last week's episode before picking up where we left off. Enjoy! If you listened to last week's episode, you know that Jason Rivera begins sharing his experience as a paramedic in the Amazon Rain Forest in Bolivia with world-renowned snake expert, Graham ‘Dingo' Dinkelman. During this particular expedition, Jason was a crew member on the History Channel hit series "Kings of Pain". Let us start with the importance of shedding light on the way Dingo approaches life before we dive any deeper. He isn't just some crazy guy with a death wish that just happens to love snakes. His courage and compassion for all living creatures allow him to find ways to bring a unique and critical awareness to the natural world and its intrinsic capability of providing for humankind. Dingo has an amazing support system within his family. His wife Kristy, and, their three kids, Taylor, Maddy, and Josh are well aware of the dangers presented to Dingo on a regular basis. But this is what he loves. This is his purpose. This is what makes him the greatest husband and father that he can be. By living in his purpose, he can be the best at anything he does, and this benefits everyone. Even though Dingo wasn't here tonight, he affected us all through Jason, and that was awesome. The better we understand the natural world, the less we have to be afraid of it, and the more we can begin to recognize its absolute beauty and universal purpose in the grand scheme of things. Snakes, spiders, sharks, and creatures of the sort, are constantly targeted with destructive and uninformed action. The more dangerous the creature, the greater we will threaten its existence. Thank you Dingo, and anyone else that goes to the extreme to bring awareness to this small, dark, often neglected, and sometimes lonely corner of the animal kingdom. I wrote this article called Being There When a Team is Starting Their First Design Journey, my first Medium article. So many organizations in the recent 10+ years have asked: what if we explore if we should build something for our audience instead of just can we build something. They may not have intended to ask that question at the start, but they're asking this when they invite human centered design. This question was sent by Jay and Pauline. They are responding to my blog post from yesterday about playing with pointed high-heel shoes. I talked about when one lady, beginner organist, came and tried to play with high heels and pointed toes. And at the end of it I asked what our listeners think, should she keep trying to adjust to the difficult of playing with these high heels and pointed toes, or should she just get a pair of real organ shoes. So Jay responded with following message: I think it’s better if she (or anyone) can get closer to a ‘real’ pair of organ shoes. I’ve found that it’s more difficult to learn and remember good pedal technique, when you’re changing shoes constantly on which you play pedals. It’s better to have some consistency. Some people may not have the funds to purchase great organ shoes, like from the Organmaster site for example, especially students. I don’t have a ‘genuine’ pair of Organmaster shoes either. I’ve thought about purchasing a pair of those, but just haven’t yet. Mainly because I had an older pair of shoes that I just had resoled—just had a leather sole and a higher heel put on them, and they work fine for me. Cheaper too! In doing that though, you need to make sure that if you just replace the heel, that the rest of the sole is leather, or at least not rubber. Something that will slide easily on the pedals. That’s my two cents worth. And Pauline writes that she plays organ shoes less. So she writes: Hi, I play organ shoeless. Because when I took organ lesson before we’re not allowed to wear shoes into the studio. And at home we also don’t wear shoes inside the house. And after so much practices without wearing shoes, I felt more comfortable without shoes. I can feel the pedals better. 1st day I played in church I also took off my shoes. So I m a naked feet organist. In your opinion what do you think? No standard or just being natural.

So I decided to do a mini-sode on my additional thoughts on how this poll affected Paul and how I felt it was also a form on bullying I mean a person or a group of people deciding your self worth based on one physical attribute and posting it for all to see and judge. Makes me think of that burn book from Mean Girls. Was this a 70's version of that? I also open up about being teased for my appearance in junior high .
