This timely collection of essays examines Sino-American relations during the Second World War, the Chinese Civil War and the opening of the Cold War. Drawing on new sources uncovered in China, Taiwan, the UK and the US, the authors demonstrate how 'grassroots' engagements - not just elite diplomacy - established the trans-Pacific networks that both shaped the postwar order in Asia, and continue to influence Sino-US relations today. In these crucial years, servicemen, scientists, students, businesspeople, activists, bureaucrats and many others travelled between the US and China. In every chapter, this innovative volume's approach uncovers their stories using both Chinese and English language sources. By examining interactions among various Chinese and American actors in the dynamic wartime environment, Uneasy Allies: Sino-American Relations at the Grassroots, 1937–1949 (Cambridge UP, 2024) reveals a new perspective on the foundations of American power, the brittle nature of the Sino-American relationship, and the early formation of the institutions that shaped the Cold War Pacific. My Job Depends on Ag: How a Grassroots Sticker Campaign Grew Into a Movement Supporting California Agriculture

My Job Depends on Ag: On today's AgNet News Hour, Nick Papagni and Josh McGill highlighted the power of grassroots advocacy in agriculture with guest Steve Malanka, co-founder of the “My Job Depends on Ag” campaign. What began as a simple blue sticker has grown into one of the most recognizable marketing efforts in California agriculture—uniting farmers, ranchers, and supporters across the San Joaquin Valley and beyond. A Message That Stuck Malanka shared the origins of the campaign, which started with the idea of creating a visible reminder that agriculture supports not just farmers, but entire communities. The familiar sticker, often seen on trucks, tractors, and even storage tanks, carries the straightforward but powerful message: My Job Depends on Ag. One recent example of its reach came from Nutrien Ag Solutions, which displayed a 15-foot-wide decal on one of its massive storage tanks along Highway 33. For Malanka, seeing the message spread so widely underscores the campaign's mission of educating the public that food doesn't come from grocery stores—it begins with farmers who need water, land, and support to keep producing the safest, highest-quality food in the world. More Than a Sticker The campaign has also evolved into a fundraising effort that supports agricultural education. Proceeds from sticker sales go toward scholarships for high school seniors pursuing agriculture degrees. Over the past eight years, the program has contributed $10,000 annually to groups like the Center for Land-Based Learning, ensuring the next generation of ag leaders has resources to continue their education. “This isn't about making money—it's about reinvesting in the future of farming,” Malanka explained, noting that donations are routed through the Central Valley Community Foundation so all proceeds benefit students. Building Awareness and Unity Nick and Josh emphasized how the movement has become more than marketing—it's a bond among farmers and ag supporters. Spotting the sticker on the road has become a sign of solidarity, much like how FFA jackets unite students across the country. With California agriculture facing constant challenges—from water restrictions to growing imports—the hosts encouraged listeners to get involved. “We need to push this more than ever,” Nick said. “Education is huge, and this campaign helps spread the message.” To learn how to get a sticker or support the program, visit AgNetWest.com or email Nick at nick@agnetmedia.com.

According to recent reporting by Taylor Lorenz in Wired, a secretive dark money group is funding influencers to post pro-Democratic Party messaging on social media services - paying them up to $8,000 per month to do so and holding them to a secretive contract that prevents them from even revealing their relationship to the organization Chorus, backed by the Sixteen Thirty Fund. Some of those named as affiliated with the program including Brian Tyler Cohen, Olivia Julianna, David Pakman and Pod Save America's Jon Favreau have posted uncannily similar response statements and videos attacking everything except the facts of the article. Kenneth Walden, behind the account 2RawTooReal, wasn't even listed in the article but posted an attack video saying “Apparently, we're not allowed to bash Democrats or actually give them any type of constructive criticism. However, I swear I be on damn Bernie Sanders' ass like flies on —.” The ironies abound, and the dismissals of the story have fallen flat.Democrats fully recognize that they need to appeal to young voters, those who are most influenced by social media.  According to Berkeley Political Review, “Biden won youth (ages 18 to 29) voters by 24 points [in 2020], but Harris only led Trump by 11 points [in 2024].” The damning statistics don't necessarily reflect that young people are actually getting more conservative, but likely that they're more aware of a corrupt system in which both parties promote more cops, defend genocide and send ICE after innocent people.Support the show

Bobby Kennedy, Jr. seemed on the right track when he launched his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign.Well, not the wacky-quacky part of that agenda, where he teeters off into the prickly thicket of medical voodoo and vaccine bugaboos. But he was onto something fundamentally important when he began to rally public opposition to the arrogance, greed, and willful destructiveness of pesticide peddlers and other Big Food profiteers. As Secretary of Health, Kennedy pushed Trump's “presidential commission on children's health” to take long-overdue action to rein-in those agribusiness contaminators of our food supply and natural resources. He called for limits and outright bans on industrial ag and food processing abuses that grow corporate profits at the expense of healthy kids.Great! But wait – the commission's draft report is now out, and none of Kennedy's most meaningful stuff is in it. None! There's no suggestion, for example, that even the most toxic cancer-causing pesticides should be outlawed, permanently removed from food products and our environment. What happened? Money. While Kennedy was publicly talking a good game, Big Food profiteers were paying a million dollars each to have intimate talks at private dinners with Trump. And when money talks, political integrity walks.Sadly, rather than resigning in protest of Trump's whitewash and rallying America's families to carry this betrayal into next year's elections, Kennedy is hyping the report's empty calories as a people's victory! But he can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure. Summary In this conversation, Leah Wilson interviews Dr. Pete Chambers, a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and candidate for Texas governor. They discuss Dr. Chambers' motivations for running, his views on informed consent and medical freedom, the role of government in protecting individual liberties, and the importance of grassroots movements in today's political landscape. Dr. Chambers emphasizes the need for transparency in health data collection and the dangers of government overreach in public health. In this conversation, Pete Chambers discusses various pressing issues facing Texas, including cybersecurity risks, the implications of weather modification practices, public health concerns related to water fluoridation, the role of school-based health centers, mental health challenges among youth, food security in relation to mRNA technology, and his campaign strategies for the upcoming gubernatorial election. Chambers emphasizes the importance of parental rights, government accountability, and grassroots involvement in political processes. Key Takeaways: Doc Chambers believes in the importance of informed consent for all medical interventions. The government should not override individual liberties for public health mandates. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right that must be protected. Grassroots movements are essential for political change in Texas. Health data collection by the government poses significant risks. Dr. Chambers emphasizes the need for transparency in medical practices. He advocates for the rights of individuals to make their own health choices. Water should hydrate, not medicate; consider ending fluoridation. Parents are the best advisors for their children. Food security is a defense issue that needs attention. We need grassroots support and funding for the campaign. FIVE EASY PIECES TO SAFEGUARD DEMOCRACY, EMPATHY & THEIR ROOTS IN THE 9TH AMENDMENT For GREEP Zoom #236, our beloved Poet Laureate MIMI GERMAN opens with her usual brilliant verse from “Where Grasses Bend." We commemorate the passing of the great RICHARD LEE who founded Oaksterdam University, devoted to the cultivation of cannabis / marijuana & its immeasurable power. We then get updated by "America's Mayor” HEIDI LAMPERT about the battle for democracy in Waldport, Oregon, the Mayberry of the deep west coast. Long-time activist MICKI LEADER shares her concerns about whether the 2026 election will be cancelled. From radio host LYNN FEINERMAN we hear charges about so-called “Christians” who so deeply love to trash the preachings of the actual Christ. Grassroots campaigner DOROTHY REIK warns that people with no human feelings are taking over the world with the view that the non-rich are a “burden.” Legendary journalist DAVID SALTMAN tells of a network cohort who received a kidney from an anonymous donor whom he then honored with a legendary poem. Our great friend JULIE LEVINE, who moved from lush, liberal Topanga to a MAGA stronghold in the Sequoia Forest, gives us a report about compassion and empathy in the deep right. From deepest Arizona and the heart of how elections must be conducted, JOHN BRAKEY and KEN BENNETT brief us on the five core foundational pillars we must have to protect our democracy. As John Bolton is being raided by the Trump Gestapo, STEVE CARUSO reminds us that Bolton was part of the Brooks Brothers Mob that killed the S. Florida vote count in Bush v Gore 2000. Co-Host MIKE HERSH honors John Brakey's powerful crusade to preserve the possibility of a fair, reliable outcome in 2026. Now faced with National Guard invasions of states that don't want them, and with forcible Gerrymandering ordered by a US President, ATTORNEY SAM SALTMAN takes us through the 9th & 10th Amendments. In a lively dialogue, we hear still more from Steve Caruso, Dorothy Reik, ALEX WILLIAMS and others. From BETTY KISSILOVE we hear about the fight over Natural Rights. From CARMEN RODRIGUEZ we dig deeper into America's spiritual roots, Christian or otherwise. We will return after Labor Day, on September 8, to revisit empathy, compassion, election protection, clean energy & the inevitable light at the end of the seemingly bottomless Trump Tunnel.

BrownTown talks all things immigration under Trump 2.0, June protests in Los Angeles, and how ICE ain't shit with immigration attorney and new homie Khiabett Osuna. As Trump tests the waters of his draconian federal policies, financially backed by the Big [Fucking Ugly] Bill, and using ICE as his Gestapo-like muscle, we turn our focus to community resistance in all its forms. Khiabett leans into her work in and outside of the legal field as one piece of this larger puzzle to ensure that no human is illegal on stolen land. From protestors, organizers, and healers on the front lines in Los Angeles to mutual aid and rapid-response networks in Chicago, BrownTown and Khiabett unpack our neoliberal past, technofascist present, and what will be a desperate future unless we fight back. Originally recorded July 18, 2025. GUESTKhiabett Osuna is an attorney with Kriezelman Burton & Associates, LLC. While at DePaul College of Law, Khiabett worked at a local immigration firm and was involved in the Asylum Immigration Clinic. She volunteered with the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project in Dilley, Texas, helping screen women and children at the South Texas Family Detention Center who had recently arrived in the United States. After law school, Khiabett was hired through the Department of Justice Honors Program as a Judicial Law Clerk, where she clerked for Immigration Judges in El Paso and Fort Worth, Texas. She then worked at immigration firms in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, assisting clients primarily in removal proceedings. In Chicago, Khiabett works at a full service immigration law firm, continuing to represent clients in removal proceedings, as well as individuals seeking family based and humanitarian relief. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the AILA Chicago Chapter Advocacy Committee, and the Federal Bar Association. Khiabett also volunteers at her local church providing consults to community members. Mentioned in the episode:Correction: WWII ended under U.S. President Harry S. With over 15 years of experience in legal marketing, Ron has helped hundreds of firms strengthen their strategy, hold vendors accountable, and create consistent growth. He shares how smaller law firms can stand out in saturated markets, avoid common SEO pitfalls, and use AI strategically without losing authenticity or trust.     What you'll learn about in this episode:   AI is reshaping legal marketing strategy - Law firms must learn how AI-driven search and content affects visibility - Firms that avoid AI tools risk falling behind in efficiency and reach Smaller firms can still compete with giants - Community involvement and personalized branding are powerful differentiators - Grassroots efforts like newsletters, and speaking gigs help smaller firms build trust Differentiation starts with messaging - Firms must clarify why a prospect should hire them instead of a competitor - Storytelling, clear positioning, and niche services help break through the noise AI is a tool- use it wisely - AI is great for content outlines and repurposing - but human oversight is essential - Abuse of AI can hurt search rankings and brand credibility Authenticity wins on social media - Static, outsourced posts often fall flat—audiences prefer real voices and stories - Ghostwriters can help lawyers find and refine their authentic tone for better impact Resources:  Website: www.legalfenix.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/ronlatz/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/legalfenixmarketing YouTube: www.youtube.com/@LegalFenix Additional Resources:    https://www.pilmma.org/aiworkshop https://www.pilmma.org/the-mastermind-effect https://www.pilmma.org/resources https://www.pilmma.org/mastermind

Brady Robinson is a lifelong climber, conservationist, and educator who currently serves as Director of Philanthropy for the Freyja Foundation. His career has spanned outdoor education, nonprofit leadership, and global conservation philanthropy, with past roles including Executive Director of both the Access Fund and the Conservation Alliance. These days, his work focuses on supporting high-impact land and water conservation efforts across South America, with a particular emphasis on Chilean Patagonia. Brady and I go way back—he was my NOLS instructor in the fall of 1999, on a course that involved big mountains, a few navigational hiccups, and some life-long leadership lessons. That semester planted the seeds for much of what I've done professionally and personally—including starting this podcast—and Brady's been a friend and mentor for going on 26 years. He was also one of the very first guests on this podcast in 2016, back when I had only one microphone and really didn't know how to work it. When Brady and I last spoke on the podcast, he was leading the Access Fund, and a lot has happened since then. In this conversation, we catch up on his career and dig into everything he's working on now. We start out discussing our NOLS experience, Brady's leadership in forming the Outdoor Alliance (alongside recent podcast guest Adam Cramer), his work on passing major climbing legislation, and the lessons he's learned about collaboration, trust, and long-game thinking. We spend the second half of the conversation digging into his current work in Patagonia's Cochamó Valley—a spectacular and at-risk landscape in southern Chile that Brady and his colleagues are working to protect through an ambitious multi-partner campaign. It's a story of nimble, grassroots conservation work, smart philanthropy, and what's possible when people align around a shared purpose. If you've enjoyed my conversations with Kris Tompkins or Adam Cramer, then I know you'll enjoy this one as well. Big thanks to Brady for his decades of support and mentorship—and another big thanks to you for listening.
