Why are Fundraising Texts SO Annoying?

Are you tired of incessant, unhinged Democratic fundraising texts and emails? Well, so are we. Tommy sits down with three experts in the party's digital fundraising space to talk about how this model became the norm, why it may be hurting Democrats more than it helps, and how that campaign — you know the one — got your cell phone number. Blue State Digital founder Joe Rospars joins to diagnose the problem, our own Dan Pfeiffer weighs in on its impact, and ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones explains why Democrats rely on the tactic and lays out what we stand to lose if Trump's attacks against her organization succeed. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. What if being overlooked was the best thing that ever happened to your business? When Wandra Cain walked into showrooms and got ignored, she didn't flinch—she made a mental note. That “Pretty Woman” moment stuck with her, not as a grievance, but as fuel. She'd always had a sharp eye and a natural gift for pulling beauty out of limitation, but that experience sharpened her resolve to create a design business that didn't ask for permission to be taken seriously. She built WCA Interiors from the ground up, not with flashy backing or a big team, but with intention, consistency, and a deep belief that her work belonged, regardless of who initially acknowledged it. Her journey started with pivots. From corporate desk jobs to cosmetology school, and eventually to earning her interior design degree while working full-time, she followed the tug toward creativity even when the path forward looked unclear. Early projects tested her—contractors challenged her decisions, budgets fell apart, and she didn't always know how to protect her time or profit. But instead of hiding the hard parts, she leaned in. Every mistake became a tool. Every misstep taught her how to run a better project, have firmer boundaries, and value her own expertise. What really sets Wandra apart is her ability to show up with humility and confidence at the same time. She leads projects with warmth, listens deeply to clients, and isn't afraid to say no when the fit or the numbers are off. Even with over 11,000 Instagram followers, she's more focused on building genuine relationships—online and off—than chasing engagement. For her, design isn't about ego or aesthetic signatures; it's about helping people feel truly at home in their spaces. The business didn't happen overnight. It was ten years of quiet hustle, small wins, big learning curves, and showing up again the next day. You'll learn: ✅ How to lead projects (and set boundaries) when contractors push back ✅ Why visibility matters—and how Wandra handled being underestimated ✅ Systems and client processes that helped her turn a hobby into a real business ✅ What she's doing now to market her firm without burning out on Instagram If you're an interior designer looking to grow a business that reflects who you are—and makes money doing it—this is the episode that's going to help you get there. Listen now and remember: being underestimated might be your greatest edge.   (0:00) The “Pretty Woman” moment that shaped Wandra's mindset (0:50) Wandra's origin story and entering the interior design world (4:40) Why representation in the design industry matters (12:30) Pivoting from cosmetology to design and going back to school (15:50) Learning the hard way: pricing, client management, and early business mistakes (22:40) Building confidence and refining systems and client processes (30:50) Grassroots marketing, networking, and digital growth   About Wandra Cain Wandra Cain is the founder and principal designer of WCA Interiors, a full-service interior design firm based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With a focus on creating refined yet livable luxury, Wandra believes that a well-designed home should serve as a sanctuary, capturing the spirit of the client and enhancing their lifestyle. Her approach emphasizes collaboration, ensuring each space reflects its inhabitants' unique personalities and needs. Website Instagram: @wcainteriors

Right To Repair With Roy Littlefield IV, VP of Government Affairs for the Tire Industry Association

Roy Littlefield IV is the Vice President of Government Affairs for the Tire Industry Association. In his role, Roy leads advocacy efforts across state and federal levels to support independent tire and auto repair shops. With deep roots in the industry — his father also served in TIA leadership — Roy has been involved in policy from a young age. He now champions initiatives like the Right to Repair Act, helping protect consumer choice and shop independence nationwide. In this episode… The modern vehicle repair landscape is becoming more exclusive, locking out independent repair shops and consumers from essential data. As cloud-based systems and EV technology evolve, traditional tools like OBD2 ports are being phased out, creating barriers to access. How can the industry and lawmakers ensure fair repair rights for everyone? According to Roy Littlefield IV of the Tire Industry Association, the key lies in mobilizing grassroots support and pushing for bipartisan legislation. Roy explains how right to repair laws, such as those in Maine and Massachusetts, are being held up in court despite overwhelming public support. He also reveals the strategic moves being made to pass a federal Repair Act that would secure nationwide access to vehicle repair data. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes Roy for a conversation about the right to repair movement, legislative hurdles, and how independent shop owners can take action. Roy shares insights on consumer rights, industry trends, and the importance of grassroots advocacy. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  [02:10] Why Right to Repair is the most urgent issue facing the auto industry [03:25] How EVs and new tech give OEMs the upper hand in the repair market [05:08] The challenge of cloud-based systems replacing traditional OBD2 ports [10:44] Roy Littlefield IV and Mike Edge share personal stories of inflated dealership repair estimates [11:33] How VIP Tire and Auto led a Right to Repair victory in Maine [12:45] Why automakers claim they "can't comply" with basic consumer access laws [15:44] How bipartisan support is building for national legislation [16:25] Grassroots advocacy and how shop owners can make an impact Resources mentioned in this episode: Roy Littlefield IV on LinkedIn Tire Industry Association Report a Right to Repair Issue Brian Bates on LinkedIn EAS Tire and Auto Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Quotable Moments:  “Right to repair is the biggest issue right now facing the industry, and it's going to hit us like an avalanche.” “Consumers should have the right to decide who works on their vehicle — and own that information.” “Even something as simple as an oil change is becoming a problem because of data lockouts.” “Despite 80% of voters supporting it, one lawsuit can hold up progress for years.” “Every person matters — whether you're an intern or a CEO, everyone deserves respect and recognition.” Action Steps:  Report blocked repair access: Submit your issue via the TIA advocacy page so it can be used in legal and legislative efforts. Contact your lawmakers: Speak to your local, state, and federal representatives about how Right to Repair affects your business. Educate consumers: Let customers know they have a choice — and a right — to get their vehicle serviced outside the dealership. Display QR codes in your shop: Use TIA's printable posters with QR codes to make it easy for your team to report issues. Support the federal Repair Act: Encourage your trade networks to back bipartisan legislation ensuring nationwide repair access. Sponsor for this episode... I am Jason Green-Lowe, the executive director of the Center for AI Policy (CAIP). Our mission is to directly convince Congress to pass strong AI safety legislation. As I explain in some detail in this post, I think our organization has been doing extremely important work, and that we've been doing well at it. Unfortunately, we have been unable to get funding from traditional donors to continue our operations. If we don't get more funding in the next 30 days, we will have to shut down, which will damage our relationships with Congress and make it harder for future advocates to get traction on AI governance. In this post, I explain what we've been doing, why I think it's valuable, and how your donations could help. This is the first post in what I expect will be a 3-part series. A new storytelling event in Grand Rapids called Unfiltered aims to bring people together through the sharing of experiences in and around the city. Similar to the format of The Moth, Unfiltered features folks in and around Grand Rapids sharing stories about first loves, scary job interviews, weird interactions in grocery stores, make-or-break moments of adversity, and more. Storytellers are invited to tell a 12-minute story around a common theme. Raul Alvarez, lead organizer for the event, initially pitched this idea to a group of friends with whom he regularly met for drinks. They were all excited to help plan a storytelling event, he said. “They went to work, and we had no clue what to expect,” Alvarez said. “It was kind of a prototype, but all of a sudden it sold out.” While Alvarez said storytelling might be a bit scary at first, because it involves a certain level of vulnerability, the community hasn't backed down. “Now, we have the second sellout, which tells us it is a movement,” Alvarez said. “We want to keep it going, because there's a lot of stories out there. We already have stories that have been submitted for a future [event].” The next Unfiltered is May 2, 2025 at the Four Star Theater, in Grand Rapids. The theme is “You Can’t Make This S*** Up!” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In uncertain times, confronting pressing problems such as racial oppression and the environmental crisis requires everyday people to come together and wield political power for the greater good. Yet, as Michael Rosino shows in Democracy Is Awkward (UNC Press, 2025), progressive political organizations in the United States have frequently failed to achieve social change.  Why? Rosino posits that it is because of the unwillingness of white progressives at the grassroots level to share power with progressives of color. Using rich ethnographic data, Rosino focuses on participants in a real grassroots progressive political party in the northeastern United States. While the organization's goals included racial equity and the inclusion of people of color, its membership and leadership remained disproportionately white, and the group had mixed success in prioritizing and carrying out its racial justice agenda. By highlighting the connections between racial inequality, grassroots democracy, and political participation, Rosino weaves in the voices and experiences of party members and offers insights for building more robust and empowering spaces of grassroots democratic engagement. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

“I get a call, … I'm waiting outside on the street corner. … A pickup truck shows up, with a fridge on it. Two guys get out and drop this fridge on the street. And that's literally the way it started. These two anonymous guys, who drop this fridge on the street. … And there's this guy named Ruben. And he's the gatekeeper of the block —making sure everyone's on good behavior and nobody messes up the block and he says to me, ‘What is this?' And I say ‘Its a community fridge'. ‘A fridge for the community?' Yeah, I say. And he says, ‘I got you Dan, you and me, we're going to do this'…It was during COVID, and Dan Zauderer was a 6th grade Humanities teacher at the American Dream School in the South Bronx, a charter school in New York. The American Dream School specifically served the undocumented Latin American community. And because Dan taught in Costa Rica for a while, his Spanish skills were good, and it allowed him to get to know his students really well.Because he took the time to lean into the school community, he discovered that many of many of his students' families did not have access to basic resources. He sent out a survey via text message to eighty eight families and what he learned changed the course of his life. One in four families were cutting down on meals or skipping meals a few times a week. “The first project,' he tells me, “Was raising money online. By tapping into the contacts he'd made throughout his life, he was able to raise in the tens of thousands of dollars. They raised money for hotspots, for books for summer reading and food supplies… "It was a great experience, to know that you could rally community that way.”  They began to send staples to his student's families —cleaning supplies, beans and rice. But some of the families struggled more than others.  They enrolled six families in a food delivery program, where they received weekly boxes of produce. Over time, the money ran out, but the food insecurity did not. It was in that experience that the seeds of Grassroots Grocery were sown.  Dan Zauderer is a community builder, social entrepreneur, and the driving force behind Grassroots Grocery. His journey began as a middle school teacher at the Bronx's American Dream School, where he discovered that one in four of his students were facing food insecurity. That moment changed everything. Leaving his teaching job, he co-founded the Mott Haven Fridge Network, a grassroots initiative that grew into Grassroots Grocery, a volunteer-powered movement bringing fresh, healthy food directly to communities that need it most.Learn more about Grassroots Grocery here.Do you know someone who has a story to tell?
