Back in 2020, Janine and Shannon had a robust conversation about our passion for the budgeting software You Need a Budget (YNAB). Our enthusiasm has not dimmed in the slightest, so we wanted to run it again. Money is a source of stress for so many people. One tool that both Janine and Shannon use to help them take the stress out of money and create financial peace is the software You Need a Budget (YNAB). Shannon is a YNAB master! In this episode we discuss YNAB and other strategies for creating financial peace. (And Shannon offers to help any listener who needs help with YNAB!) Discussion topics include: • The key to Shannon's financial peace: YNAB (You Need a Budget) software • Rule 1 with YNAB: Give each dollar a job! • How YNAB can help you manage an irregular income by creating a buffer • Budgeting for next month's expenses • Shannon's addiction to interacting with her money every day in YNAB (it takes less than 15 minutes!) • Budgeting for annual expenses monthly to eliminate big surprise payments • How YNAB can help create peace in relationships when people share money • Reading a book about YNAB vs trying it out first • How Janine is pairing YNAB and Quickbooks to help her stay on top of her bookkeeping • The peace that comes with being on top of your money • Using Undebt.it to help with debt payoff • How YNAB can help with automatic credit card payments • Shannon's offer to help out anyone who's trying out YNAB in our Facebook group • A strategy for creating a buffer so that this month's income pays next month's expenses • Making money feel supportive rather than stressful Note: Since this was recorded two and a half years ago, Janine has achieved the financial peace she sought, thanks to YNAB. She is now debt-free and happily handles four budgets daily. She is grateful for YNAB (and Shannon's YNAB mentorship) literally every day. Today we have a very exciting show. Call it what you want budget, spending plan, cashflow management. We have come up with all sorts of fancy and less abrasive ways of talking about the need to plan how we spend our money. Life is busy, and managing spending can be a challenge. If you are like most people, and you struggle to find a way to plan your spending each month, this episode is for you. We are going to be talking budgeting with Jesse Mecham. BIO Personal finance expert, speaker, and business leader, Jesse Mecham is the Founder of You Need A Budget (or YNAB if you are very busy and important). Jesse hosts the You Need A Budget Podcast, the Beginning Balance Podcast and is the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of, You Need A Budget. (He's nothing if not consistent!) A self-proclaimed “recovering CPA,” he is deeply passionate about teaching individuals, families, and business owners YNAB's Four Rules to help them gain total control of their money. Jesse first developed the YNAB method and original spreadsheet as a broke, newly married college student who really needed a budget. In an attempt to make an additional $300/month to cover rent, he sold his spreadsheet online and YNAB was born. Since 2004, the software has grown into a leading personal finance platform and has helped hundreds of thousands of people break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle, get out of debt, and save more money. Now, YNAB has a growing team living and working all around the world, and has built a thriving remote culture that earned recognition as Fortune's #1 best small company to work for. (YNAB was doing remote work before it was cool!) When not teaching people how to budget, Jesse loves gardening, woodworking, marksmanship, and travel. He also spends a good bit of time with his wife and the seven small people that live in their house. To learn more, visit www.youneedabudget.com.

You Need a Budget (YNAB). New Day of Bright Pensioen.

Jesse Mecham, founder of software budgeting service You Need a Budget (YNAB), and Mark Butler, a virtual CFO who helps a businesses of all sizes manage their finances, join together to talk about the money issues many small businesses face, and strategies for addressing them. Today, they apply YNAB's four rules of budgeting to the small business, starting with Rule #1: Give Every Dollar a Job. By giving every dollar a job, businesses can not only create reserves for unforeseen expenses and avoid cash crunches in difficult times, they can also plan more effectively for growth. Without a clear job for the dollars in your business, it's easy for business owners to fall into the trap of never thinking they have enough cash in reserve. Whether it's hiring a new employee, buying new equipment, or making some other large capital expenditure, many businesses get frozen in the mindset of thinking they need just a little more margin of safety in their reserves before making the next growth move. By giving your dollars specific jobs, as Mark explains, it becomes much clearer when to execute growth plans. Look forward to more Beginning Balance shows every Friday!

Welcome back to the Business Journey podcast! I'm SO excited to be sharing today's episode with you because I truly believe in the power of reading. Honestly, I think every small business owner should make time to read because it's just such a powerful experience and way to consume content that can change your life. Today, I'm excited to be sharing FIVE books that have been transformational for my business with you. Remember, you don't have to actually read the book to consume the knowledge - try an audio book if you can't find time to sit and read. There's so many options to get the content - so let's dive right in! Making Time to ReadLook, I get it. We're all SUPER busy people - running businesses, raising kids, and having a life. But I just want you to remember that if you read 20 minutes a day, you can finish at least one book a month. I used to believe that if I couldn't finish a chapter, it wasn't worth reading in that sitting. But now, I've learned that's not the case. Try to carve out a little time for YOU. Whether you read or listen to an audiobook, give yourself that time to relax and enjoy! Now, onto the books! Profit First by Mike Michalowicz"Profit First" was seriously transformational for my finances. This book helped me understand that the idea of having a profitable business was possible. This book teaches you how to allocate your expenses, profit, and what you actually pay yourself so that you can make money! Combined with the http://www.ynab.com (You Need a Budget (YNAB)) app and website, this book seriously changed how I look at my money! Traction by Gino Wickman"Traction" is alllll about how you structure and run your business, a concept Wickman calls "EOS". The whole book walks you through how to structure your team - and even if you don't have a team, you can learn a lot about how to manage your business. Wickman helps you plan longterm for your business, looking ahead 3, 5, and 10 years in advance so you can figure out where you want your business to go. This book truly helped me understand the WHY of my business. Rocket Fuel by Gino Wickman and Mark WintersI wasn't lying when I said I loved Gino Wickman. Wickman partnered with Mark Winters to write this one. It's a bit of a spinoff from "Traction", but it really focuses on the relationship between a visionary/CEO and their team, especially an integrator. This relationship is super powerful and "Rocket Fuel" helped me understand how to lean into and use that to my advantage to grow. If you're even considering a team or are in the beginning stages of starting one, read this book! The One Hour Content Plan by Meera KothandI have to admit that this book was a SUPER fast read but it was incredibly helpful. Kothand helps you map out a year of content, no matte what kind of business you're in. Because of this book, I had hundreds of ideas for content pieces. She honestly makes it so simple by asking questions that get you thinking about what your audience wants, and you'll wind up writing out a huge brain dump. Trust me! It's worth the read! The Miracle Morning by Hal ElrodHonestly, "The Miracle Morning" was great for my personal life more than anything but it did impact my business, too! This book really helps you outline a morning routine - one that's solid and focused. Whether you're a morning person or not, Elrod reminds you that giving yourself a sold routine will help you be the best version of you. And there you have it: 5 books that have transformed my business! I hope that you go grab a copy and dive in. Truly, I believe the chance to read through some of these amazing ideas will help you in your own business. I know it sparked a LOT of thoughts and changes for me! No matter where employees are in their careers, they all want the same thing when it comes to money: peace of mind. With 74% of Americans living paycheck-to-paycheck, there’s a need for financial wellness education that employers are stepping in to meet. But since the best financial advice is the kind that’s personalized to each individual’s specific situation, where should a small business start? In this episode of PIVOT, host of the PBS show MoneyTrack and CEO of Wealthramp Pam Krueger shares the tools small businesses can use to help employees build financial wellness. You’ll hear how to meet employees where they are in their careers without becoming a financial advisor yourself, and tips for helping employees take control of their personal finances based on Pam’s wealth of experience as a financial advisor and educator. --------------------------------------------------- >>>> [07:24-10:21] Why a financial wellness offering is so important in a small business >>>> [14:19-15:04 What matters most in helping employees feel financially secure>>>>[16:43[-18:39] The key to finding tools that are low-cost and high-impact>>>>[18:44-22:16] Three categories of employees from a personal finance perspective >>>>[23:14-27:07 ] Pam’s recommended financial wellness tool for early-career employees: You Need a Budget (YNAB) >>>>[28:12-33:54] Pam’s recommended tool for mid-career employees: Betterment and Blooom >>>>[34:02-37:56] Pam’s recommended tool for late-career employees: Wealthramp.com >>>>[40:37-44:17] Why it’s important to gather feedback from employees on financial wellness tools >>>>[44:32-45:56 ] Pam’s advice on the best place to start when offering financial wellness resources for the first time After you listen: Subscribe to the podcast Submit your People Ops questions
I join Jesse Mecham founder of You Need a Budget to discuss digital mindfulness, the pitfalls of social media and endless digital content, and my own quest to find peace as a digital creative.
Some people feel that budgets can be restricting or they reinforce a scarcity mindset. While others get a sense of freedom and control with their budget. So what's the right answer? Jesse Mecham, Founder of You Need a Budget (YNAB), joins me to discuss this debate and how people can find their individual path with budgeting.

For some people, the process of doing something is more important than the finished product and for other folks it's the other way around. This week, Shannon and Janine discuss process vs product and how it might be helpful to look at it from the other perspective. Discussion topics include: • The inspiration for this episode: a story about a ceramics teacher who graded half the class on quantity and the other half on quality • The surprising result: The highest quality work came from the people who were graded on quantity • How being on the process (quantity) side might get you where you want to go more easily than being on the product (quality) side. • Process vs product in knitting • The Mystery Knit Along project that Janine is knitting • How sometimes the product is the process • How it can be useful to engage in the process even if you are not sure of the product or sure that you can achieve the quality that you want • Janine’s fervent love for You Need a Budget (YNAB) and how it took her awhile to get there • The value of noticing whether you’re thinking about what you want to do as process vs product, then consider it the other way around • How process vs product isn’t a matter of good or bad, it’s just a matter of what works for you Visit the show notes at www.gettingtogoodenough.com for show notes and links.

One evening Lauren spent $600 on clothes. When she got home, she left the purchases in the car so her husband wouldn’t find out. The next day she decided she had to tell him what she had done, and how it was only the tip of the iceberg of the $40,000 of debt she had racked up. “When I told him, he just stood there staring at me for a while, then he said, ‘I forgive you. Let’s get through this together.’” Fast forward to today: Lauren and her husband are not only out of debt, but Lauren is teaching others how to do it, too. Lauren is the author of ‘The Recovering Spender’ and blogs at LaurenGreutman.com. Listen to find out the 3 rules that help her stay out of debt today. Nuggets of Wisdom from Lauren: "When the pain of staying broke becomes greater than the pain of changing your spending habits, that is when you will make a change. " "A lot of the debt was because I got us into the debt and never told him about it because I did not want to burden him. It was not that I was like trying to be sneaky. I just did not want to burden him. I would just say, 'Okay, it's what everybody does. I am just having a terrible time dealing with it so it is my fault, so I just need to handle it and get us out of it....'" "I started feeling really guilty about it. I started thinking like, 'Okay, I hid this from him because I didn't want to fight with him... He knew we were in debt, but he did not know how much. But he knew we were in debt and here I am, going and spending $600 on clothing and now I am hiding it from him. This is not just good for our marriage and our future. The next day I decided to come clean to him and tell him all the debt that we had. And make a real difference. I felt like for the first time I realized that I could not do it myself, like I needed his help to handle this and to have somebody to talk to about it. It is really like - not only it is lonely and stressful but it is just damaging to your marriage if you have this big elephant in the room that you can never talk about it." "He said, 'I forgive you, let us get through this together.' And so those are the words that changed everything. That was 9 years ago and from then on we got out of debt in 2 years. We just had a passion for teaching other people all the mistakes that we went through." "I have a spending problem. I think I always have the personality to be addicted to spending. And because of that I have to know what boundaries I have to set up around myself, so I do not spend money. Like 3 rules that I have. #1.) Do not go to Target alone. My second one, if I do any online shopping, I use a prepaid debit card, so I have to fund it beforehand. And #3, I do not use credit cards. So, those are my three big boundaries I had to put around myself, to keep myself safe. So, yes, I would definitely say, it is an addiction of some sort." "The biggest thing that they need to learn is how to set a realistic budget. For years, I was so terrified of the B word. I cringed on the inside. But once I saw that a budget can actually bring freedom to me, it really kind of opened up my eyes to all that's possible. For so many years, I spent money without knowing what was going on and, yes, that was fun and great, but then, you sit down at the end of the day, and you are like, 'Oh my gosh, I spent this much money. I did not know that I spent this much money! I don't know where it went. And now, you don't have money for your bills.' So, I found out that budgeting actually gives me freedom to spend what I want to without giving me that guilt and feeling of depletion at the end of the day. I think people need to set that realistic budget, and it can really really help them." Some of Lauren's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "That I can turn work off. I think that is a big thing. As an entrepreneur who works online, the temptation to work all day and all night and every weekend is there, you know, in your face all the time. We finally got an office outside of our house and that has been really imperative to my success with everything that I do online. I got so sick of being half on, half off all day long, that setting it up this way has really kept us very productive during our work hours and also being able to be a husband and wife at night and hang out with the kids, go out to dinner, and do fun stuff together without feeling guilty that I have so much work to do." Lauren's Happiness Formula: "I am happiest when I stick to my budget, I spend time with family, and I sleep." A Challenge from Lauren: "I want everybody to think about their values and if their spending is a reflection of that value system. Gabe and Jeff discuss the new version of You Need a Budget (YNAB) which released recently to mixed reviews. Going from a solid, stable, standalone app with Dropbox integration (the holy grail for nerds like these guys), it has pivoted to a web app with all of the pitfalls of that methodology. They discuss Jeff's experiences with the app and cry into their suds while bemoaning how one of their favorite pieces of software has changed in all of the wrong ways. Terminamos hablando sobre dos aplicaciones que han llamado la atención a finales de 2014: You Need a Budget (YNAB) y Pinboard.
On this episode, we talk about Amazon's purchase of Twitch, the curved display of the Galaxy Note Edge, Dyson's Eye vacuum with 360-degree camera, the You Need a Budget (YNAB) software application and more feedback from our friend Loren.
The importance of budgeting can’t be overstated. Today we talk to the king of budgeting tools, Jesse Mecham the CEO of You Need a Budget and give you an honest YNAB review. We talk about budgeting with Mint a lot and it’s a great tool. But there is always talk of You Need A Budget within the personal finance community so we wanted to check it out. And because we provide only the best for you, we brought on the founder to discuss the tools so we can provide an in depth YNAB review. YNAB was originally a spreadsheet that Jesse and his wife used to budget their money when they were newly married and expecting a baby. He had just intended to sell it to make a little extra income on top of his accounting job, but it soon proved so successful that it become his career. Zero-Based Budgeting Zero-based budgeting forces you to “spend” every dollar. At the end of the month, the goal, as it is with any budget, is to have brought in more money than you spent. And that’s where most traditional methods of budgeting end. Great! You paid all of your bills and have an extra $600 left over. For a lot of people, that leftover money is “fun” money, to be spent on things like clothes, dinners out, movies. Zero-based budgeting gives those dollars a job, rule one of YNAB. It’s like the difference between your unemployed friends and your friends who have a job. The unemployed dollars are sitting around all day smoking weed while the dollars with a job are contributing. In this case, contributing to your financial goals. And that’s what YNAB is, zero-based budgeting. If you’ve tried budgeting before and not had success, it’s probably not you! It’s like dieting. Sometimes you just need to find a different method that will work for you. Four Principles There are four principles behind YNAB: Give Every Dollar A Job Not one dollar just gets to sit on its dead ass, not pulling its weight. Every dollar is working, working for you. Some jobs are more fun than others. Some jobs are paying your bills but some jobs are buying you drinks! Just because a dollar has a job, doesn’t mean it’s job is to be spent. Your holiday money might sit dormant for ten months of the year, but when the shopping season arrives, it leaps into action. Save For A Rainy Day If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you don’t have anything left over for a rainy day. This rule is for large but not regular expenses like holidays, vacations, school tuition. Look ahead to these large, less frequent expenses and break them down per month. That monthly amount is added into each month’s budget. Rule two makes sure that you are planning for these expenses well before they come due and budgeting for them each month. Roll With The Punches You’re going to make mistakes, the unexpected will happen. That’s okay. If you overspend in one area, you’ll find money from another and move it over to the category you came up short in. Live On Last Month’s Income When you use YNAB, you will save enough of last month’s income to pay for this month’s expenses. What you earn in January, you spend in February. Depending on your current bank balance, this might take a few months to achieve. That’s okay, you’ll get there. This rule is especially helpful for those who have variable incomes, freelancers, and realtors for instance. This system puts an end to living on money you don’t yet have. Getting Started Step One There is a free 34 day trial for YNAB. You download and install the program which runs on both Windows and Mac. Step Two You can choose to use Cloud Sync so your information is updated across your multiple devices and is backed up. To back the data up, you’ll need Learn more about your ad choices.
