Though Hunter Biden arrived on Capitol Hill at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, following a subpoena from House Republicans calling him to testify at a House Oversight Committee deposition, the President's son didn't go. He instead addressed the press on the Senate side of the Capitol — stating he refused to attend a closed-door deposition and that his father, President Biden, was not “financially involved” in his business dealings. Now, Americans wait to see what consequences Hunter may face, especially now that House Republicans have formally issued their impeachment inquiry into the President. On the Rundown, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), who has played a significant role in the Biden family investigation, discusses why he believes Hunter did what he did, how Republicans are moving forward with their investigation, and his response to claims that House Republicans should be focusing on issues impacting Americans instead of an impeachment inquiry. Are Americans getting tired of tipping? With inflationary prices and economic uncertainty, reports show some in the country are growing confused by and, in some cases, resentful of tipping expectations. This year, reported income from tips is down from its previous spike during the pandemic. As gratuity pop-up screens become more common on tablets in restaurants and other locations, customers are pushing back. On the Rundown, Emily Guy Birkin, financial expert and co-author of “Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management,” breaks down who you should tip, what services deserve gratuity, and why not tipping your barista is okay. Plus, commentary by Fox News Medical Contributor and author of “Panic Attack,” Dr. Nicole Saphier. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

According to recent statistics, around 1 in 3 Americans have some sort of household budget plan, only 30% have a long-term financial plan that involves savings and investments for the future, yet 70% of us acknowledge that our financial plans need work. So why do we neglect such important elements of our lives and how can we motivate ourselves to do better? That's the conversation I have with Emily Guy Birken, Financial Expert, money coach, and co-author of Stacked: Your Super-Serious Guide to Modern Money Management, on this episode of CFO at Home. Key Takeaways Many of the things that we procrastinate about financially (saving for retirement, investigating a questionable credit card charge, etc), fall into the category of “important but not urgent”, so there are no short-term consequences for not getting them done. Reasons for Procrastination Anticipation that dealing with a situation is going to be unpleasant, time consuming, etc. All or nothing thinking (unless we have a certain dollar amount to apply towards our goal, we choose to do nothing) Guilt/shame Shame of dealing with old mistakes Guilt that we haven't been managing our finances closely enough Strategies for beating financial procrastination Put tasks on your calendar (and set reminders) Break tasks down into small component parts (work on it in 5-10 minute increments) Bribe yourself! Give yourself a treat for completing the tasks (indulge your inner 10 year old) Treat your financial past like you have amnesia. Focus how you deal with the issues going forward Start by taking small steps towards your goal Allocate a small amount of money to paying extra on your credit card balance, contributing to your 401k, etc. each month Helps to create a sense of empowerment about your future Sets you to take advantage of the time value of money Helps to view yourself as being more responsible with money Perform a cost/benefit analysis Often the tradeoff for procrastination in the long run is having to repeatedly put out fires Resources EmilyGuyBirken.com/CFO Stacked, Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management End Financial Stress Now Atomic Habits Ways to contact: EmilyGuyBirken - Twitter Author Emily Guy BIrken - Facebook EmilyGuyBirken - Instagram Contact the Host - vince@thecfoathome.com

What do you crave? Well, whatever it is, the next time you crave it, there is something simple you can do that can make the craving pass quickly to help you avoid temptation. I begin this episode with this very easy tactic that has been proven to work. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyched/201104/clenching-your-fists-increases-willpower Would you say you are a cynical person? A cynic is someone who doesn't put much faith in the goodness of others. Many cynics say they are just realists - that people can't be trusted because humans are motivated by greed and self-interest. Well, when you look a little deeper, cynicism may not be such a great way to view humanity according to behavior scientist Jamil Zaki, PhD, who is an associate professor of psychology at Stanford University. He has a great TED Talk called Escaping the Cynicism Trap and he is also author of the book The War for Kindness (https://amzn.to/2qtq4dX) . Listen as he reveals why some of us are cynics and what being cynical does to a person. Jamil was on an earlier episode talking about empathy which I think you will enjoy if you haven't heard it. You can listen to it here: https://www.somethingyoushouldknow.net/338-dirty-jobs-host-mike-rowe-offers-a-different-view-of-success-the-awesome-power-of-empathy/ It hopefully comes as a comfort that almost everyone has regrets about how they have handled their finances. So much so that a large number of us have actually shed tears over money mistakes. What's more important is what are you going to do now with your money? Joining me to discuss that and offer some very specific advice to get your financial house in order is Joe Saul-Sehy, a former financial planner who hosts the popular podcast called Stacking Benjamins https://www.stackingbenjamins.com/ and has a new book out called Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management (https://amzn.to/3KaBYO1). Today, I have the honor of interviewing my friends, Joe Saul Sehy, and Emily Guy. Birken. They've written a new book called Stacked, Your Super Serious Guide To Modern Money Management. And if you've heard Joe before he is the host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast, that he always brings comedy to everything that he does. Emily has also been on my podcast in the past. She's written several books about money management. Bringing the two of them together to share their wisdom in this book that inspires you to think differently about your relationship with money is really special. I love this conversation and we learn how they brought their strengths together to write a funny money book (I wasn't sure that was possible...) and what you can learn by reading it. It's such a great story. I love the giving attitude that both of them bring into everything that they do. And I know you'll have fun with this conversation. Enjoy... Joe and Emily shares: From Joe: “I think, and I don't know, if you want to answer this also, but for me, the book was meant to be a guide that you can pick up wherever you are in your journey. And it certainly is meant specifically - the beginning is meant for beginner, but the second, not even the second piece, the last quarter of the book is specifically meant to challenge those people that you and I met during our old careers as financial advisors. When they'd say, I think I'm doing okay. And I would always challenge them by saying, I don't think your goals are bigger - big enough then. And, it's not that I want to challenge people that your goals aren't right, because your goals are definitely right for you. But I think there's so many people out there that could be helping their community that could be doing more. That could be more efficient with their money. They could be bringing their sister, their brother, along with them for this wonderful ride.” From Emily: “You can do it. This is, you know, and if you don't do it right the first time, try again. This is something that - you can. Use these skills that you've been learning, you know. Cut your teeth on the simpler stuff and work your way up. And so, that's something, I'm really pleased with and proud of with this book, is that we don't assume that our readers are not going to be able to handle things like the efficient frontier. We know that they can do it. And so, it's going to be something where even if you're starting at the very beginning, like I don't even know what a budget is or how to make one, you will be able to get to a point where you can be like - ‘Oh yes, the efficient frontier at cocktail parties and feel very confident…” Emily Guy Birken has worn a lot of hats throughout her career: a temporary tattoo artist, bookseller, AmeriCorps volunteer, and teacher. Throughout it all, there's been one constant - She's a huge money nerd. In 2010, she turned her excitement about spreadsheets into a career as a Plutus Award-winning freelance writer in the financial sphere. Her varied career combined with her background in education helps her make complex financial topics relatable. She is the author of five books: The 5 Years Before You Retire, Choose Your Retirement, Making Social Security Work for You, End Financial Stress Now, and the just-launched Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management, written with Joe Saul-Sehy. Emily lives in Milwaukee with her spouse and two sons, plus their dog, Tivo, and their cat, The Dude. And, Joe is the creator and co-host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast and co-author of "STACKED: Your Super-Serious Guide To Modern Money". He is a current board member at large of The Plutus Foundation and former Board President and Board Member of Partnership For The Pathway. While Joe's “money expert story” includes being a former financial advisor (16 years) and representing American Express and Ameriprise in the media. His real story is how he was a money disaster in his early life, pulled his financial house into order, and left his business at age 40 to pursue an entirely different path. Masterworks is an alternative investing platform that gives you access to one of the most exclusive and overlooked investments in history: blue-chip art. Masterworks lets regular people invest in paintings by legends like Banksy Basquiat and Warhol without spending millions. In fact, I used masterworks to invest in a 15 million dollar Picasso the other day. Here's how it works: Masterworks will buy a painting they think will appreciate well over time, then they securitize that painting with the SEC, so you can invest in it instead of buying the whole thing. Once they sell the painting, later on, you get your share of the proceeds. It's that simple. In 2020 and 2021, masterworks sold two paintings that appreciated by over 30%. They have over 280,000 users and demand is as high as ever. But I partnered with them to give you all priority access by going to https://allthehacks.com/masterworks (see important disclosures at masterworks.io/disclaimer). This episode is also brought to you by BlockFi. BlockFi is the company I use to store all my crypto and I think they provide huge value because. Whether you buy your crypto with them or transfer in what you already have, you can start earning interest on all of it, which is a great way to earn some passive income with almost no effort. And that also includes stable coins based in us dollars where you can earn 9% without having your savings fluctuate with the crypto markets. This is where I store the cash I used to keep at a high yield savings account. Since opening my account, I've already earned thousands of dollars of interest.BlockFi also has a rewards credit card that instead of earning points or miles gives you Bitcoin back on every purchase you make offering 3.5% back in the first three months and 1.5% percent back after that. If you want to check out BlockFi, you can get an exclusive bonus of up to $250 free when you sign at https://allthehacks.com/blockfi. Texarkana resident Joe Saul-Sehy's Stacking Benjamins podcast has won awards and gained a loyal audience by providing financial advice with a light, humorous touch. His new book with co-author Emily Guy Birken is called “Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management.” And it's available beginning Dec. 28. In July, Joe and host Karl Richter spoke about the book, the podcast and what he has learned in his decades of work helping ordinary people achieve financial security. Here's an encore presentation of that interview. Look for all-new episodes of On the Line in 2022 — and happy new year!
Market technician Jeffrey Bierman, founder of TheQuantGuy.com, sees the stock market as being vulnerable to a big step back mid-way through the first quarter of 2022, noting that the market will be in a happy place and comfort zone as long as the Standard and Poor's 500 stays above 4,275; if the market falls below that level, Bierman says the pain could get close to 20 percent before things bottom out. Also on the show, Joseph Biondo of Biondo Investment Advisors gives a more optimistic -- but still cautious -- take on the market for next year, Joe Saul-Sehy of the Stacking Benjamins podcast discusses his new book, "Stacked: Your Super-Serious Guide to Modern Money Management," and Chuck takes another question from the audience about how to know you are financially set and how to invest when you get there.
Joe Saul-Sehy, along with co-author Emily Guy Birken, is out with his first book Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management. Bobbi puts him on the spot with a fun game of financial free association. Listen to hear how Joe did - and if you would have the same answers.
