Manoj Govindan, a Venture Leader with a 30-year career, takes us through his transformative path from engineering to becoming a strategic force in business and innovation. Manoj reflects on his early influences, particularly his upbringing in India, where he was steered into engineering despite his passion for politics and policy. His journey led him to the U.S., where he embraced his true identity and transitioned from technical roles to business analysis and consultancy. Early in his career, while working in sales, he learned the power of networking—understanding that building genuine connections and relationships was key to creating opportunities and driving change. At each stage, Manoj deepened his self-awareness, continuously building upon his experiences to refine his approach to leadership and innovation. He defines a Catalyst as someone who identifies and creates mutual value, emphasizing the importance of connection over simple networking. Through his involvement with the Catalyst Leadership Trust, Manoj's understanding of being a Catalyst evolved, recognizing the role of scaling personal development to help others maximize their potential. Manoj also discusses the challenges of navigating hubris and risk aversion within large organizations. He explains how these challenges can impede innovation, particularly when risk aversion is linked to political agendas. To overcome these obstacles, he leverages strategic partnerships and ensures the right mix of talent to drive successful innovation. The conversation concludes with Manoj expressing admiration for his father, whom he considers his favorite Catalyst. He hints at the three biggest lessons learned from his father, leaving listeners intrigued. Original music by Lynz Floren.

If you keep up to date with the latest technology news, you know that the momentum and investment has shifted from Asia to the Middle East. But gone are the days where countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE just import technology and talent - the new trend across the Middle East is how to create a home-grown technology startup ecosystem - and this is what we are going to cover in today's podcast.  Let's face it - money is not going to be an issue - but as we have seen from other countries, just throwing money at the startup ecosystem is no guarantee that it will be successful.  To help us go through this topic, we are joined by the Partner & Co-Founder of SparkLabs Group, Bernard Moon. SparkLabs has made a name for itself by launching accelerators and VC funds in Asia, Australia and the US, but now they are entering the Middle East market, so let's see what has drawn SparkLabs to that region - and what Bernard thinks will be the critical success factors to making sure they get a return on their investments.  Show Notes: 00:00 Intro to Bernard Moon and SparkLabs Group 02:30 SparkLabs new accelerator programs in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi 06:00 How does SparkLabs plan to find the “best of the best” startups in the Middle East 08:45 Do you see any similarities between the Middle East markets and other countries where you have had success with your accelerators (e.g. Korea, Taiwan)? A Deep Dive into Finding Product Market Fit with Sean Sheppard, Venture Capitalist and Managing Partner at Corporate Venture Builder U+. Are you an early-stage startup struggling to attract investors and find product-market fit? Do you ever wonder what you might be missing when it comes to presenting to VCs? Well, we recently spoke with the brilliant mind that is Sean, and he dropped some major knowledge bombs on the subject. Sean is a savvy serial entrepreneur, who knows how to make a business boom! With three successful exits and a background in Venture Capital, Sean is the Managing Partner at Corporate Venture Builder U+. For over 30 years, Sean has been bringing new products to market as a five-times sales founder. With his extensive experience and expertise, he helps startups find their footing in the industry and develop predictable revenue models. It's no wonder Sean has been recognized as one of the Top Sales Influencers You Should Be Following on social media. Transparency is the Key in Entrepreneurial Ventures You know that feeling when someone isn't being totally honest with you? Well, that's exactly what gets VC investors like our speaker here worried. In our conversation with Sean, he pointed out that most young start-ups often lack honesty when presenting to VCs. And that's a big issue because finding product market fit is a tough journey. “...tell me what you don't know and how you're going to find out; to be a learner at all instead of a know-it-all and have that growth mindset...embrace ambiguity. Replace the word rejection in your vocabulary with feedback, and you see feedback as a gift...” ---Sean Sheppard It's not just about what entrepreneurs are holding back from investors; it's about their attitude towards learning and growth. Building a successful startup isn't just about having a great idea or cool technology... It's about understanding the problem you're trying to solve, and the people you're trying to solve it for. Balancing Immediate Gains with Long-Term Strategy One of the pressing topics about market strategy is the difference in mindset between those who prioritize short-term gains and those with a strategic understanding of technology companies. Sean explains why Wall Street guys tend to prioritize quarterly earnings... While those with a strategic understanding of technology companies can see the bigger picture. Adobe's acquisition of Figma is an example. Sean emphasizes the importance and the need to adapt between generational demographics and to own relationships with customers to stay on top in the long run “...if you don't adapt, you are going to die... that doesn't mean you can't reinvent yourself tomorrow. I think everybody can and everybody should. But you have to stay out in front to stay relevant. And that means understanding the Gen Z demographic versus the millennial demographic...” ---Sean Sheppard Sean's Insight about the Shift of the Knowledge-Worker to Intellectual Capitalist “The way that we're investing now is we're giving less money to more companies earlier on...Because applied technology means anybody can do it … and that measured by the cost acquire customer over the customer lifetime value...and it was because they could find product market fit, and they understood the real problem.” - Sean SheppardThis is the age of infinite leverage. In today's age of applied...

In this conversation I connected with Ella Goldner. Ella is a co-founder of Zinc - a fund that backs entrepreneurs, pre-team and pre-idea, to build new tech-enabled & mission-driven commercial ventures. She is also the co-founder of Alma Angels, a network that brings together new and existing angel investors who are committed to actively supporting female founders. In this conversation we talked about: The Zinc venture builder missions and how/why the best way to foster entrepreneurship in response to social challenges? How to mitigate the challenges of co-founder relationships, especially given that some people say that too much or too little co-founder conflict is the #1 cause of start up failure. A deep dive into the latest Zinc environment mission which just went live - to mobilise the climate innovation ecosystem through cross-sector collaboration and scale up capital, and shifting narrative from climate being (only) a big problem to (also) a huge opportunity. OpenCo/newCo? So I started out by asking her, What is a venture builder mission and who is it for? Enjoy! "The core components (of Zinc) are; can we get the talent to do that if we give them the right missions, can we build an ecosystem around them, an army of people who care about what they do and help them, and can we make that really powerful by underpinning with good research." "Every moment you hear the news (about climate) there is a reason to feel despair, so how do you turn that around and remind people of the opportunities and the covid an industry-led vaccine task force is a really good example of how to do that." "We want (Zinc) to be the best place in the world for anybody who wants to experiment and have impact at scale... if you are really talented and ambitious." https://www.zinc.vc/ https://apply.workable.com/zinc-ventures-limited/j/D79DBD1FC7/ https://www.zinc.vc/missions/environment/ https://gosupercritical.com/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172206/ https://newco.co/ https://www.channel4.com/programmes/jabbed-inside-britains-vaccine-triumph https://www.weareliminal.co/

Moving away from the prototypical impact non-profit model, Elzine's Impact Tank employs a methodological process to impact through sustainable enterprise building focusing on four thematic areas; human capital, food security, green economy and financial inclusion. We explore the entrepreneurial mindset of Elzine, including her research-intense approach to problem identification and examining the scalability of the impact venture builder model. She expands on the 5-step "fail-proof" process of Impact Tank and how it compliments the more common incubation model. Our conversation also zeros in on some of Impact Tank's ventures like Unearth Artisans, which seeks to provide high-quality artistic work and designs for the DACH (Germany (D), Austria (A), and Switzerland (CH)) region, a response to the massive decline in tourism in Namibia as a result of Covid-19.

Luis completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and he also holds a BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico City, and an MSc from Johns Hopkins University Bioengineering CBID-BME program. Luis currently oversees the emergence of new ventures at the intersection of AI and Healthcare, along a full lifecycle: from the discovery of ideas and resources within the MIT community; exploration of the problem-solution space; a methodical de-risking process; and building “Proto Ventures” that demonstrates the viability of the business and the robustness of the technology. He describes his career as a process of continuous self-discovery. The willingness to learn, discover and deeply understand things is what drove him to be the person he is today.Leadership Vs People management. Leadership is giving people a sense of purpose rather than micromanaging them with a carrot and stick mentality. His views on disruption in the financial industry. Billy asserts that the financial sector's disruption is much slower in the short term and much faster in the long term than what one would project. That being said, he considers the two most interesting developments to be the mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrencies and the capacity to buy and sell these digital currencies.Who is a Venture Builder? A venture build helps entrepreneurs focus on building their business by providing them with all the needed resources and removing blockages that might hamper their growth. Venture building is a private equity model in the venture capital space. Building the Young Founders School and what has he learnt from it? The inspiration came from how difficult it was to find good interns with basic entrepreneurship abilities. Putting roughly 4000 children through the programme helped him realize a lot of what he talks about in the conversation.Rapid Fire:The hardest thing about your job? Uncertainty. One book or a blog that has influenced you personally and professionally?Shoe DogBitcoin or another cryptocurrency?Etherrum.Three ways to support the podcast:#1 Share the episode with family and friends on social media with #OnePercentProj using the share button on the site.#2 Take a few seconds to give us a rating on Apple Podcasts.
