Pinergy, the energy transition company, has today announced a new partnership with EnergyCloud Ireland, aimed at deploying smart tech to minimise energy waste, and tackle energy poverty to power a fairer energy transition in Ireland. Through this collaboration, the surplus renewable energy generated will be distributed to fuel-poor households via EnergyCloud, which will provide a free tank of hot water. EnergyCloud Ireland is a social enterprise company that works with utilities and wind energy producers to divert unused renewable energy to Irish homes experiencing fuel poverty. Fuel poverty impacts over 550,000 households every day in Ireland, yet since 2018 according to EirGrid, well over 5,000 GWh of zero-carbon energy from wind generation went unused and ultimately wasted. EnergyCloud's mission is to create solutions to divert surplus renewable energy, which would otherwise be wasted, to Irish homes, with a primary focus on those in fuel poverty. This partnership aligns Pinergy's desire to help customers understand their consumption to reduce energy waste today for a better energy future for all. Commenting on the partnership, Enda Gunnell, CEO of Pinergy, said, "At Pinergy, we are on a mission to power energy transition in Ireland and support the move towards cheaper renewable energy. However, we are committed to ensuring that the inevitable energy transition is fair for all in society and that any waste of precious renewable energy is minimised. Our partnership with EnergyCloud can help us achieve these goals and enable us to play a small part in addressing energy poverty." Participating households are equipped with EnergyCloud-enabled smart technology, which allows surplus and otherwise wasted renewable energy to be used to heat immersion tanks at no cost to the household occupants. John Mullins, Chair of EnergyCloud said: "This partnership between EnergyCloud Ireland and Pinergy commenced a number of months ago and already families are benefiting from the scheme. EnergyCloud works with partners to fulfil our mission of using surplus renewable energy to help tackle fuel poverty. For the families involved, this is really great news and illustrates how we can collectively use smart technology to lessen the impact of fuel poverty. EnergyCloud is proud to partner with Pinergy as part of their commitment to power the energy transition and support greater use of renewable energy in Ireland."

This week on episode 368, we interviewed Ryan Aytay, CEO of Tableau, John Mullins, PhD, London Business School professor and author of Break the Rules! The Six Counter-Conventional Mindsets of Entrepreneurs that Can Help Anyone Change the World and Leslie Zane, Author of The Power of Instinct: The New Rules of Persuasion in Business and Life. Topics covered include:
Minister Alan Dillon, Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has launched a new EnergyCloud project in Galway with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The initiative, which was announced as part of an ongoing collaboration between not-for-profit EnergyCloud Ireland and Amazon Web Services (AWS), will enable families in 150 homes in Galway to receive free tanks of hot water from surplus renewable energy. Over 150 Galway families will soon have their homes equipped with an EnergyCloud enabled smart device to allow them to benefit from free tanks of hot water from surplus renewable energy. The device uses surplus renewable energy, which would otherwise be wasted, to heat immersion tanks. Speaking at the launch of the installation programme at the Gusta Gaoithe wind farm in Ardderoo, Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Alan Dillon TD, said: "This is an ambitious and creative project between EnergyCloud Ireland and Amazon Web Services and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to officially launch this programme in Galway." "The Government has clear ambitions under the Climate Action Plan in relation to flexible demand management, which maximises the efficiency of our renewable electricity generation and reduces our dependence on fossil fuel generation at peak demand times. As more and more smart energy solutions for renewable energy generation, storage and sharing continue to be developed, the Government expects more homes to be able to take advantage of excess renewable energy, thereby reducing their energy costs and carbon footprint. We know from EirGrid that there is a significant amount of dispatched down renewable energy which could be utilised in other ways, such as to heat hot water tanks. That is why initiatives such as EnergyCloud are so important." Neil Morris, Country Lead for Ireland at AWS said: "AWS has been investing in Ireland for over 15 years and this collaboration with EnergyCloud Ireland highlights our continued commitment to local communities. EnergyCloud Ireland is a great example of an innovative technology solution where businesses can work together to create positive social impact." At the event, Minister Dillon was joined by representatives from Wind Energy Ireland, AWS, EnergyCloud Ireland and a range of state and other agencies. CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, Noel Cunniffe commented: "The vision of EnergyCloud is to use wind energy which would otherwise be wasted to instead provide hot water for homes living in energy poverty. As a country, we are working towards having 80% of Ireland's electricity coming from renewable sources by 2030, and that will make us much more weather dependent. Initiatives such as EnergyCloud help to maximise that opportunity to use energy when the wind is blowing while also helping people in fuel poverty." John Mullins, Chairperson of EnergyCloud Ireland, concluded: "This support from Amazon Web Services will allow EnergyCloud to support families throughout Galway. Access to free renewable energy means that families that are part of the EnergyCloud project can simultaneously save money on electricity while reducing their use of fossil fuels. The project is a win-win-win as we are collectively creating solutions for surplus energy rather than simply switching off wind turbines and solar panels. For example, according to EirGrid, 5480 GWh of renewable wind energy was dispatched down between 2018 and 2023. That energy could have heated 1.825 billion hot water tanks and the approximate retail value of this wasted wind energy was €1.592 billion."

A Clare candidate who was unsuccessful in his European election bid says those chosen to represent Ireland South must prioritise issues of disability, mental health and imbalanced regional investment. With the 18th count due to get underway at the Nemo Rangers Count Centre in Cork, Clare TD Michael McNamara remains in contention to take a seat. Cratloe's Eddie Punch made it to count 14 before being excluded, having received a total 26,167 votes in the process. The final tally left the former General Secretary of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association in 13th position of the 23 candidates in the race. His transfers benefitted his fellow county man significantly though, with 6,690 of his votes going to Clare Independent candidate Michael McNamara, who now lies in third position, with five seats on offer. As things stand, the Scariff Deputy looks likely to take a seat, which would trigger a bye-election and this, by law must be held within six months, unless there's a General Election. But Eddie Punch who ran under the banner of Independent Ireland, believes this process must be expedited to ensure Clare has adequate Dáil representation. He insists though regardless of who is chosen to represent Ireland South, issues of disability, a mental health epidemic and imbalanced regional investment must be prioritised in European Parliament. Back at Nemo Rangers GAA Club, the votes of Fine Gael candidate John Mullins are currently being distributed which will prove pivotal to determing the final outcome. Deputy McNamara has done well from the elimination of Ireland First candidate Derek Blighe, receiving over 8,100 of his transfers to leapfrog Kathleen Funchion of Sinn Féin. At present just 3,800 votes separate MEP Mick Wallace in 5th and the Green Party MEP Grace O'Sullivan in 7th, while Fianna Fáil's Cynthia NÍ Mhurchú lies between in 6th. Michael McNamara remains 2,000 votes ahead of his nearest competitor, but with three candidates still to be eliminated, the contest for the final three seats is wide open.
Independent MEP candidate Shayk Dr Umar Al-Qadri and Fine Gael MEP candidate John Mullins discuss the realities of running for election ahead of polling day.

Should consumers be paying the price of the energy crisis while providers are making big profits? We are joined by John Mullins, Executive Chairman of Amarenco Solar and former CEO of Bord Gáis Energy.
Have you ever driven past a wind farm on a wild day and wondered why the turbines are turned off? Well, this may be ‘dispatch downtime,' where operators are required to stop producing renewable energy, due to curtailments or limitations with broad power systems and local networks. In the COSTORE project, funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the International Energy Research Centre (IERC) at Tyndall National Institute, based at UCC, has started innovative new research to reduce this downtime by examining the full potential of solar PV power plants and battery energy storage systems (BESS) working side by side. Amarenco Solar Limited, one of the largest PV plant developers in Ireland, has teamed up here with IERC to develop novel solutions to increase energy storage so PV plants can reduce their dispatch downtimes to zero. The benefit is that Ireland can then produce additional renewable energy and it will also ensure PV can participate in ancillary grid (DS3) services, which are helping to deliver a secure, sustainable electricity system in Ireland. The proposed multi-services provision (MSP) will encourage further participation of PV-ESS plant in Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) auctions. Combining technical and economic analysis, COSTORE will draw on pilot experiments in a real-time simulation environment. COSTORE will also address business model, barriers, and recommendations for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and public bodies for further deployment of these systems. Professor Brian Norton, the Head of Energy Research at Tyndall National Institute, noted that “the rising levels of dispatch down compromise Ireland's power system ability to reach its renewable energy targets, increase the financial risk for renewable energy-based power plant owners. This increases the cost of renewable electricity for electricity consumers. It is, therefore, a priority to maintain dispatch downtimes at their minimum possible level. COSTORE will analyse the techno-economical challenges and develop innovative solutions to achieve the optimal contributions from solar PV power plant in Ireland with the support of energy storage and artificial intelligence.” Dr Shafi Khadem, PI of COSTORE, and Lead, “Intelligent Grid” Research Team in IERC, explained, “We will present a bottom-up analysis of both PV plants and energy storage systems operating side-by-side starting from the selection, sizing, integration of ESS and PV plant, to the control and management for providing multiple services. We will look at the best possible combination of system structures to achieve zero dispatch downtime. We will also look at why plants have to stop producing energy at certain times, for instance because of limitations on the power system, over frequency, etc. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques will play a vital role in delivering these innovative solutions.” A design guideline for the different system components will be developed, aimed at minimising investment cost while maximising system flexibility and the whole system financial output supported by the business model solution. Policy and regulatory recommendations will also be made. In supporting the project, John Mullins, CEO of Amarenco Solar Limited, expressed that, “As decarbonisation progresses and renewable penetration in Ireland and elsewhere increases, the interaction between renewables and storage is critical to get to Net Zero. In addition, the European security of supply crisis is embellishing the need for optimisation of storage on our grid as it interacts with Solar PV and other technologies. Our collaboration with the IERC on COSTORE is a research project that will assist the optimisation of energy on our grid going forward.” The project is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and is led by IERC in collaboration with Amarenco Solar Limited. Sharks biting people Long Island #Sharkattacks #LongIsland #Sharks # DronePatrols #SharkWeekFive shark attacks have been reported in the past two weeks off Long Island, N.Y., including two within hours Wednesday, a dramatic increase in shark encounters that officials there said may represent a “new normal.” Four of the reported attacks took place on Fire Island in Suffolk County, including two at the popular Smith Point Beach and two near the village of Ocean Beach. The fifth was reported on Jones Beach Island in neighboring Nassau County. None of the victims were seriously injured, and the sharks sighted were estimated to be four to five feet in length, officials said. Shark sightings have been increasing off U.S. coasts, which scientists attribute to successful conservation efforts that have restored populations closer to historical levels. Still, the recent spate of attacks was highly unusual — there were only 47 confirmed unprovoked attacks nationwide in 2021, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. “This is not something that is precedented in any way in our history here in Suffolk County,” Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone said at a news conference Thursday. “Prior to July 3, we had not had a recorded shark bite at [Smith Point Beach] since it had opened, during beach hours, back in 1959.” Bellone said the county is deploying drones and increased lifeguard patrols to monitor the waters, acknowledging that the uptick may represent the “new normal.” “The idea of more frequent contact with these kind of sharks may be what we will be coming to expect,” Bellone said at a separate news conference Wednesday, ahead of the fifth attack. The first of the recent attacks took place June 30, when a 57-year-old man swimming at Jones Beach suffered a laceration on his right foot that paramedics identified as a “possible shark bite,” according to the Nassau County Police Department. Three days later, Zach Gallo, 33, a lifeguard at Smith Point Beach, was playing the role of a victim in a rescue training exercise when he became one himself, WABC reported. He felt a roughly four-foot shark whip him with its tail and then bite his hand, according to the station. “I felt pressure in my hand, pulled it back and I just started hammering, punching and I connected with the shark three times, and then on the third time it spun away,” Gallo told WABC. “I guess my adrenaline, survival instincts kicked in.” Gallo returned to work Thursday, saying at the news conference with Bellone that he was grateful his injuries were minor and that his fellow lifeguards came to his aid. “If you do go in the ocean, make sure you are going into an area that's protected by lifeguards,” Gallo said. On July 7, first-year lifeguard John Mullins, 17, was bitten on his foot while also playing the role of a victim during a training exercise near Ocean Beach, according to CBS New York. “The teeth were inside my skin and when I pulled my foot out, it kind of just felt like a scrape, like a rake going up my foot,” Mullins told the station. “We never expect to be attacked while we're training, but they handled it well.” Mullins received five stitches and was out of work while his foot healed, CBS New York reported. On Wednesday morning, a surfer was bitten by a roughly four-foot tiger shark, leaving a four-inch gash, according to Bellone. The man was knocked off his board and saw the shark circling back toward him, but a wave carried him into shore, Bellone said. Roughly 11 hours later, police were called to Seaview Beach after a 49-year-old Arizona man standing in “waist deep water” was bitten from behind on his left wrist and buttocks, according to Suffolk County police. He walked out of the water and was taken by helicopter to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

We speak to John Mullins, Professor of Marketing & Entrepreneurship at the London School of Business and author of the fantastic book, ‘The Customer Funded Business'.Timeline:(3:20) - What is a Customer Funded Business?(6:10) - How do Business Authors find the stories for their books?(11:00) - What's the difference between Cash Flow & Profits?(15:30) - How do you change the processes and business mindset from just Profit to think about Cash Flow as well?(22:00) - What is Float? How can Float help you grow your business faster?(27:50) - What is the danger of startups raising capital too early?(39:45) - The Pay in Advance Model(46:40) - The Subscription Model(50:15) - The Scarcity Model(56:15) - The Service to Product Model(58:20) - The Marketplace or Matchmaker Model(1:02:20) - John's thoughts on Ed Tech(1:04:00) - How difficult was it to record his Course? Why do we love this book? Because it shows us how any business can generate more cash in the bank. Most businesses don't fail to grow because they're not making profits - they fail to grow because they don't have enough Working Capital. This means that even if they're making profits, there's not enough cash in the bank that allows them to buy raw materials, pay salaries and all the other expenses to run a business. And that's when they run to VC's to get more Working Capital to grow. The Customer Funded Business provides 5 different frameworks on how businesses can have more working capital in the system and thus more money in the bank to grow! We discuss all 5 frameworks in the episode.Professor Mullins calls these Customer Funded Business Models where you're using your customers to help grow the business instead of just selling tonnes of equity and raising Venture Capital funding. Why give away big chunks of your business when you can find ways to grow without VC money? The best entrepreneurs we've had on our Podcast were those that scaled without venture funding. Then these entrepreneurs had all the leverage in negotiations when they raised money to scale even further. We thought this conversation was especially relevant in today's environment where Venture Capital funding has become ubiquitous. If you want to learn more about how to build your own Customer Funded Business, you can also check out Professor Mullins course on Coursera - How to Finance and Grow Your Startup Without VC.

Anyone who's done any serial entrepreneur work knows that Plan A never works, so if you started out a business and processes, and finds you're struggling, you're not alone. You can check the book on Amazon by John Mullins and Randy Komisar. It's a ton of great stories about large companies where they have a pivot and getting really creative about it. I think people who get out of the book start to think very creatively about what needs to change in order to become a scalable business model.Isn't it time to create passive income so you can work where you want, when you want and with whomever you want?

In The Customer Funded Business, best-selling author John Mullins uncovers five novel approaches that scrappy and innovative 21st century entrepreneurs working in companies large and small have ingeniously adapted from their predecessors like Dell, Gates, and the Zieglers. John Mullins is an Associate Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School and a worldwide speaker and educator. He is a regularly published author at Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review. Key Takeaways: [1:05] The big idea behind The Customer-Funded Business book. [3:30] Raising capital is a huge distraction. There is a better way. [6:57] Does Venture Capital funding ever make sense? [9:55] Three out of four VC-funded companies fail to return the capital that goes into them. [12:26] The pay-in-advance and subscription models allow entrepreneurs to collect a customer’s money before delivering the product. [16:54] The scarcity-based model uses a limited time offer to lure an immediate purchase. [23:49] The key to a successful service-to-product model is segregating the two offerings. [30:40] Airbnb is a good example of the Matchmaker model. Mentioned in This Episode: Customer-Funded Business: Start, Finance, or Grow Your Business with Your Customers' Cash, by John Mullins, Ph.D. How to Finance and Grow Your Startup Without VC Built to Sell Praxent @PraxentSoftware on Twitter
John Mullins is an award-winning teacher, author and scholar. John is an Associate Professor of Management Practice in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School and is recognized as a thought leader in entrepreneurship. On this episode, John and I discuss customer-funded businesses and some of the novel ways business owners can fund their businesses. To begin the interview John and I discussed his most recent book, The Customer-Funded Business. the idea for this book began while writing a chapter in his first book, Getting to Plan B, about Costco's innovative business model. John knew there were a lot of interesting funding models like Costco's out there that worked, but for most entrepreneurs it seemed as though their go-to method to acquire funding was to simply find a VC. There are other ways! John discusses 5 different models so you can fund a business without using venture capital, family money, a bank, or an angel investor. The first way is to be a matchmaker, where you just bring buyers and sellers together, but you never have your hands on the product itself. The second is the pay-in-advance model, which is what Costco currently does. The third way is a subscription model, like Netflix and the Wall Street journal, which many consumers are already familiar with. The fourth is a scarcity model, which is what the clothing company Zara uses with its customers by only having a limited amount of each style. When it's gone, it's gone. The fifth and final model is the service-to-product model like Bill Gates and Paul Allen did with Microsoft. When they first started out, they were designing custom programs for specific tasks. A lot of the code was the same, so they made it into a standard product that was scalable and affordable. Of these five, which one is the best for you? It varies based on the product you're selling. In order to successfully execute any one of these business models, you have to be really customer-focused. Before you even attempt to pitch your product to a VC, you have to pitch your product to the actual customer first. What most people don't think about is that the customer can also be your VC as well. BREAKING: Charleston Shooting Suspect Was Violent Marijuana Addict (Fox Sunday) Dylann Roof, who has reportedly confessed to killing nine inside a black church, wore pro-marijuana flags, made a ‘lot of pot jokes,' and was arrested with bindles of marijuana. Roof created a website this year called the Last Rhodesian, a reference to the white-ruled African country, which fought a bitter civil war against black majority rule before it became Zimbabwe. In photos posted to the website, Roof is seen wearing a jacket with the flags of Rhodesia and apartheid-era South Africa on the breast of his jacket. Both of these Countries are known marijuana havens where some of the best pot in the world is grown. The website features a manifesto where Roof wrote he was radicalized via the Internet following the legalization of pot in Colorado. Roof wrote he researched "marijuana violence," which took him to the website of High Times magazine. "I just shot up some of the best weed I ever had". Roof wrote, which should eliminate any doubt about his motive. Roof reportedly withdrew from family and friends in recent years, dropping out of high school in tenth grade. John Mullins, who went to school with Roof, told The Daily Beast that he remembers him as being “kind of wild.” “He used pot heavily a lot,” Mullins said. “It was obviously harder than pills. He was like a pill popper, from what I understood. Like , and stuff like that.He used the pills to level off from the pot." Roommate Dalton Tyler told Fox News that Roof was “planning something like that for six months. But he just kept getting high and forgetting about it” “He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler said. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill
