Are provincial and federal whistleblower protections really "toothless and useless"? David Hutton, Ian Bron, and James Turk from Ryerson University's Centre for Free Expression lay out their message to the Alberta government, and explain why they're so concerned about the legislative review currently underway. How do we demonstrate "moral courage in messy times"? New York Times best-selling author Irshad Manji explains why uncomfortable conversations are so important, leading up to her February 18th virtual event - epl.ca/speakers-series. After Edmonton Police officers booted houseless individuals from a heated transit centre into -30C cold, Blake Desjarlais tells us about his beloved cousin Pierre, and outlines what humane policy needs to look like in serving society's oft-marginalized population. 5:23 - Whistleblowers Panel 35:20 - Irshad manji 1:08:41 - Blake Desjarlais

Canterbury residents are sweltering under scorching high temperatures today, with some parts of the region reportedly getting as high as 40C.There are unconfirmed reports of 40C in Temuka, according to WeatherWatch.A Metservice meteorologist said although the forecaster's thermometers are only registering temperatures in the late 30s, reports as high as 40C are not "unbelievable"."Not all thermometers are created equal. The same air temperatures could be read differently by two different thermometers because they are not all of the same precision or accuracy."The station we have at the Timaru airport got up to 37.5C so it's not unbelievable that someone at their house would've got reaching that 40C mark."Other parts of Canterbury are sweltering under mid-30C temperatures.According to WeatherWatch, Amberly was sitting at 38C as was Geraldine at 2.30pm.Christchurch was sitting on 31C and Dunedin on 26C.Temperatures are expected to reach 36C in Christchurch, 34C in Blenheim and 30C in Dunedin.MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker said that is 13C above the Garden City's average temperature for this time of year.Fire permits have been suspended in most of the South Island.Permits are granted when an area is in a restricted season and have been suspended in Canterbury indefinitely. They have also been suspended in the Nelson District with the exception of Nelson Lakes, Murchison, and Golden Bay West for 48 hours.Fire and Emergency NZ's response coordinator Colin Russell said with the high temperatures and strong winds forecast, cancelling active fire permits reduces the potential for fires getting out of control."Please, avoid any spark generating activities, like grinding and cutting metals outdoors, or using farm machinery. Even mowing the lawn could cause sparks to start an out of control fire. Also check previous burn sites for hot embers and if you see a fire call 111 immediately."As an organisation we are well prepared to respond to any incidents across Canterbury.""We have crews on stand by and are ready to protect our communities, if a fire does occur."Crews have spent Tuesday morning continuing to work to contain a large fire which started at Pines Beach on Monday.Russell said the 31-hectare fire is now 60 per cent contained, but it is under control."We have around 30 firefighters working on the fire, as well as heavy machinery.""There are still spots at the fire where our people are managing active fires."Russel said they are likely to be there for at least a couple more days.Temperatures are set to reach scorching levels in the south. It was sitting at 24C by 6am at Mt Cook.Tony Trewinnard of Blue Skies Weather told Chris Lynch of NewstalkZB he would describe it as "stupidly hot.""It is probably likely to be the hottest day of the summer in Canterbury. It is our first day above 30C this January and possibly for the whole summer.""It's happening because we've got some very warm air from the interior of Australia that has worked its away across the Tasman."Temperatures across the South Island have been high so far this week and are expected to continue."Christchurch is currently looking at three days in a row with more than 5C above average," Bakker said.It is considered a heatwave when temperatures are consistently 5C above average for five days. The sunshine is not expected to last all week with a front expected to bring a cool change to much of the country from about Thursday.Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said while we may welcome a run of hot weather, overheating is a condition than can prove fatal."It's especially important to stay out of the sun where possible, avoid extreme physical exertion and ensure pets and people are not left alone in stationary cars."While we are all vulnerable to hot temperatures, some people are particularly at risk. This includes the elderly, infants and children, women who are pregnant, people suffering from chronic, acute and seve...

M., Petersen, R., Brewer, J. R., Ma, T., Colleluori, G., Severi, I., Cinti, S., Gerhart-Hines, Z., Mandrup, S., Faergeman, N. J. Abstract: Objectives: Homeostatic regulation of body temperature is fundamental to mammalian physiology and is controlled by acute and chronic responses of local, endocrine and neuronal regulators. Although the skin is the largest sensory organ of the human body, and plays a fundamental role in regulating body temperature, it is surprising that adaptive alterations in skin functions and morphology only vaguely have been associated with physiological responses to cold stress or sensation of ambient temperatures. Methods: To unravel the physiological responses to a compromised epidermal barrier in detail we have used animal models with either defects in skin lipid metabolism (ACBP-/- and skin-specific ACBP-/- knockout mice) or defects in skin structural proteins (ma/ma Flg ft/ft). The primary objective was to clarify how defects in epidermal barrier function affect 1) energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry, 2) response to high fat feeding and a high oral glucose load and 3) expression of brown-selective gene programs by quantitative PCR in inguinal WAT (iWAT). Results: We show that mice with a compromised epidermal barrier function exhibit increased energy expenditure, increased food intake, browning of the iWAT, and resistance to diet-induced obesity. The metabolic phenotype, including browning of the iWAT, is reversed by housing the mice at thermoneutrality (30C) or by pharmacological beta-adrenergic blocking. These findings show that a compromised epidermal barrier induces a beta-adrenergic response that increases energy expenditure and browning of the white adipose tissue to maintain a normal body temperature. Conclusion: Our findings show that the epidermal barrier plays a key role in maintaining systemic metabolic homeostasis. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Justin: I was wondering if you could recommend any type or brand of Triphala. Also, I know you are against using dairy in the diet, however I’ve read from numerous sources that milk, cheese, and yogurt are important in balancing the vata dosha. Lastly, I’ve read that drops of sesame oil in the ear can help resolve tinnitus, what are your thoughts on this? Thanks, love the podcast. I’ve learned so much! Anne: Hi Dr. Stephen! I recently listened to Kelli Tennant's podcast where you were a guest and I have to say - wow! The knowledge that you have acquired is admirable and I am very curious to know more. I am seeking help in the sleep department as I have been experiencing a significant period of insomnia, as well as abnormal/cessation of menstrual cycle. I live in LA, do you see patients here? If not, do you have a list of trusted like-minded practitioners like yourself in Los Angeles/CA? Thank you! Cara: Hi Dr Cabral! Fortunately, I have little stash of your CBD products while we patiently wait for yours to be available again.I recently wanted to try a brand of CBD plus THC tincture that a friend was trying because straight CBD still wasn't quite helping me go to sleep. Ive been doing all the other protocols and supplements for sleep.I came upon a brand that sounds great, they post their lab/pesticide reports right on their product pages. They don't make that 24:1 CBD THC blend anymore but they claim they have the strongest CBD oil. Its 750 mg per a 15 mil bottle. However they use non gmo soy lecithin and upon questioning they say that increases the bioavailability. It's tested for residual pesticides and solvents. They say that's why people say there's is so much more potent because its more bioavailable. Since you're the master at bioavailability, what are your thoughts on this? In gratitude, Cara Dar: Hope you are having a great day. My question is regarding a 2 day fast - can you briefly go over the pros and cons of a water fast vs a juice fast. Which juice is the best to fast with in your opinion and for a water fast is it better to use lemon honey water or plain water. I am planning on doing the 7 day cabral detox in January. Thanks for all you do p.s. if I am asking too many questions through ask cabral let me know and I will cut down but it will be difficult since your answers are way too informative and it almost feels like having a conversation with a friend.  Melissa: Thanks for all of your insights, I love continuing to learn and improve my health and the health of my family. I have 2 opposite sleep issues. My son has Lyme disease. He was diagnosed over 10 years ago. He has done lots of different treatments throughout the years and is feeling good except for his chronic insomnia! Also my daughter deals with chronic fatigue, is tired all the time and sleeps a lot. If only they could share their sleep hours:) Appreciate any recommendations! Chanel: Hi, What is the best method of testing for lyme? From my understanding, the blood test may not be the most accurate. I’ve heard Dr. Cabral mention that he has completed teachings/seminars on lyme and am wondering if those are yet available. Thank you for all you do. Your information is life-changing. DB: Sensitive subject. Son has vitiligo on half of his two fingers and two small spots on the middle of his back. His tests for vitamin b, d, and autoimmune issues(that his pediatrician said are often associated with vitiligo) have come back negative. I heard you on a podcast briefly mention that hydrogen peroxide could potentially help. We give him nutrasea omega 3, smarty pants multivitamin and elderberry. What steps would you take if this was your 4 year old child as obviously this could affect his mental health later on and is worrisome as a parent? Are there better supplements I could get him. I'll do anything for them. Many thanks for your input. Malinda: I’ve been searching for the answer to what is the root cause of CRADLE CAP. Like you, I have a need to know the underlining issues that causes dis-ease in the body. There has to be a reason that some babies get cradle cap while other do not. All I see online and in my baby books is "there's no known reason, it just clears up on its own." My first child had it when he was a baby and after about a year it cleared up on its own. Now my 8 month old has it. I’ve decided this time around I want to really understand what is going on in my babies body. I am using Babyganics cleansing oil which contains oils like sesame seed and almond as well as calendula and black cumin to name a few ingredients, in addition to giving her 30C of Boiron Calcarea Carbonica a day, which is the homeopathic recommendation. Im noticing her scalp flaking more and it looks like it’s going away by using these products. However, I really want to know what has caused CRADLE CAP to happen in the first place because even though Im using these products and the issue seems to be resloving, is her body still in dis-ease even after the cradle cap has cleared up? Does her gut need more probiotics? Should I do a rotation diet? Am I eating something that is causing it, since she is breastfeeding? Someone on your facebook group page suggested that not washing your baby right after birth keeps it away, however I had all natural home-births and didn’t bath my babies for at least a week if not more. Also was suggested that a correction of balance of the skin flora/gut flora would locate its root cause. I want her body/ gut to be as healthy as it can be going forward. I'm curious as to what is REALLY causing it. If you have time, I also would like to know what is the root cause of hernias? I’ve searched your podcast but non address the root cause. After my husband had a inguinal hernia, it seems everyone we talk to has had a hernia or multiple hernias, which I want to avoid for my husband. Our bodies can’t possibly be that flawed. You rock, thank you for helping so many people! You’re a real life superhero. Anthony: Hi Dr. Cabral. IHP student here. My dad has premature ventricular contractions his whole life but it's ramping up in his 50s, to a debilitating point where it would happen every minute of every hour for HOURS until he takes Atenolol & Estazolam. Then it would slowly subside and the skipping & palpitations would be manageable. This would happen at grocery stores at checkout, non-stressful conversations, and sometimes throughout the night. His physician / cardiologist switched him to Metropolol & Clonazepan. Which exacerbated the condition and it's still affecting him now. I think that taking 10 years of benzos caused a dependency that can't make him switch from Estazolam? What is your take on this situation for short term immediate relief & long term root causes? Baby it's cold outside – or at least it was, in certain parts of the world, when we recorded this, ho hum.Anyway, that's the week's topic. Inspired by the polar vortex, which has seen temperatures of -30C in the US Midwest, we're chatting extremes of weather, with the New Statesman's US editor Nicky Woolf and its in-house midwesterner Sarah Manavis. We also talk about extreme heat and, this being CityMetric, manage a long and detailed argument about which temperature scale is actually better.(I'm not going to lie to you: everyone was in a particularly unruly mood that day, and at one point I had to leave the recording for a moment to deal with an editorial problem, so I'm a bit nervous of what they said behind my back. What's more, there was a problem with Nicky's mic that means his words are accompanied by a low hiss as if he's speaking parseltongue, and the process of editing that out means he sounds like he was literally phoning it in. All things considered, I am slightly terrified to hear the results of this one, but there we are.)Also this week, I talk to Paul Swinney of the Centre for Cities about the other big freeze (DYSWIDT?) affecting British politics: austerity. Just how much damage has it done to our cities? The conversation was inspired in large part by this year's addition of the Centre's annual Cities Outlook report. A podcast interview with Surinder Arora (@DrSurinderArora) Dr Surinder Arora qualified from the School of Clinical Dentistry, Sheffield in 2011 and has been practicing Privately in Singapore since 2014 Why should you move to Singapore if you are a Dentist? This should really be a personal choice – only you can determine and discover your WHY. It is important to consider how this affects your children/spouse/partner/family and business commitments. Why Singapore? Singapore is Asia Lite. It is a Metropolis. Dental standards are high, and the weather is 30C every day! I cover lots more of this in my article about returning from Singapore and my experiences. What was it like finding a job then, and is it any different now? It is much more difficult now compared to 2-3 years ago. This is because the Corporates are less likely to hire foreign graduates because you first need to be on Conditional Registration with the Singapore Dental Council (SDC). This is not really a big deal, except you need to be assigned 2 supervisors, and it is due to a lack of supervisors that can be troublesome. Only once you have had 2-3 successful years, under the eyes of a ‘Supervisor’, can you then work ‘solo’ with Full Registration. First, you need to find a corporate or a Dental practice that is willing to take you on and they will help you with your application to the SDC. Where can I look for an associate position? The Singapore Dental Association classifieds is your best bet! What can Overseas Dentists expect in terms of salary Expect anywhere between 35 – 55% remuneration. Average GDP can make $6 – 20 K SGD per month, net. A lot of practices/corporates will put a safety net for you in your first 6 months so you can get a ‘base’ minimum salary e.g. $7K per month. Bare in mind, however, that Tax is pretty damn low! What is Dentistry like in SG? High standard – but varies massively depending on where you are practicing. Even in this tiny island-country, the demographics of just a few miles are massive and will influence if you are busy or not. When I was there, I was doing very run-of-the-mill family Dentistry, perio, extractions and Dentures! Words of caution to UK/US Grads looking to work in Singapore? Although you do not need to sit any exams to work in Singapore, it has become very difficult to find a Job as a foreign graduate. Should you continue to pay GDC subscription? Short term answer: Yes, to avoid the hassle Long term answer: eventually, after working for few years in Singapore, you may wish to stop paying GDC subscription. Surinder emailed the GDC and as long as you keep all your documentation and evidence of CPD, theoretically it should take 10-15 days to get back on the register. Found this useful? EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Hello and welcome to the Friday 15th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   MORE JAGUAR I-PACE REVIEWS Do you remember a week or so ago, the first batch of I-PACE reviews hit the net from the largest video and magazine channels. Now it seems the next wave of website this time have had their time in the car, as it seemed another set of reviews all appeared today.   Starting with Seth writing for Electrek, one of 20 writers at the event: "I noticed that I was one of the only folks with any EV experience. While its 240-mile 400HP AWD electric drivetrain certainly screams SUV, its actual body shape, internal space and ride make it feel more like a sedan. If anything, it feels closest to a Tesla Model 3 inside, especially with its glass roof, but that’s beyond a stretch. Jaguar has beautiful and tasteful buttons, knobs and a small screen while Tesla’s spartan interior UI is simply a large touch screen with two simple knobs on the steering wheel. The official charging rate of the I-PACE is 100kW but I was told that a future OTA software update could push charging to over 110kW, closer to 120kW No one is going to mistake the I-PACE for a Tesla unless they are fresh out of ideas and need some clickbait." I'm sure if you tune into the Electrek podcast there will be a lot of chat about it. Engadget: "One of the most important addition is support for over-the-air updates. While a majority of the features in the I-Pace are cribbed from other Jags and Land Rovers, this one is clearly borrowed from Tesla. Musk's company set a precedent with its OTA updates and it's good to see other automakers following suit. Consumers are used to seeing their other tech devices update without having to visit a service center, there's no reason the biggest computer they own shouldn't do it as well." ArsTechnica: "The Jaguar I-Pace might just be the most significant new car we'll drive this year. Heat management was a key concern, and there are actually three separate cooling systems: one for the cabin, one for the battery, and a third just for the control electronics. The batteries are happiest at between 30C and 40C. Under the European WLTP cycle, the I-Pace has been rated at 400km of range. The more accurate EPA test the US uses hasn't been completed yet, but Jaguar says you should get at least 240 miles from a full charge. As with every other EV we've tested, you can change the I-Pace's regenerative braking setting between high and low. Set to high, you can really drive it with just the accelerator pedal, as it will decelerate with a vigor when you lift your foot (up to 0.4G in fact). Active Sound Design. Set to Calm, the car's speakers will, in addition to playing music or the radio, add some active noise cancellation to increase the serenity of your journey. But you can also go a different route by setting the slider to Dynamic. This augments those normal EV sounds with a bit more oomph as you floor it. I'm hard pressed to describe the sound, which falls somewhere between a turbine and a growl. Sure, it's artificial, but it's also kind of awesome."   https://electrek.co/2018/06/14/jaguar-i-pace-review-the-240-mile-luxury-sport-utility-is-everything/ https://www.engadget.com/2018/06/14/2019-jaguar-ipace-review/ https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/06/forget-about-that-tesla-the-jaguar-i-pace-is-the-most-compelling-ev-yet/     RENAULT INVEST IN EV PRODUCTION "Renault will invest more than 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) to increase electric vehicle production capacity in France and add new models, the carmaker said on Thursday" according to Reuters: "The Zoe production line in Flins, west of Paris, will double its maximum output with the battery-powered subcompact’s next upgrade, the company said in a statement, and its northern Douai factory will tool up to build electric cars on a new architecture shared with Japanese affiliate Nissan." Renault Chairman and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn: "“The acceleration of our investments in France for electric vehicles will increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of our French industrial sites”. The Cleon plant will triple its electric motor production capacity, while Maubeuge in eastern France receives tooling investment for the next Kangoo van including its electric version, Renault said.   http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180614/ANE/180619840/renault-will-invest-1-billion-euros-in-french-ev-production   RENAULT JOINS E-VIA FLEX-E FAST-CHARGING PROJECT Meanwhile, Electrans has more news on Renault as they've: "partnered with a number of European utilities and international car makers to join the E-VIA FLEX-E project, an initiative to expand high-power charging facilities across the continent." "The extra-urban network will comprise high-power stations with a capacity of between 150kW and 350kW, located along motorways and expressways. Alongside Renault and Enel, partners include EDF, Enedis and Verbund, Nissan and Ibil, a Spanish company which specialises in EV charging services." Autonews go on to say: "the E-VIA FLEX-E network will join that of the EVA+ (Electric Vehicles Arteries) project, also co-financed by the European Commission, which will support 180 fast charging points (Fast Recharge Plus) built over three years along Italian extra-urban corridors. The first 40 Fast stations have already been installed along the Rome-Milan route, among others. Italy alone expects to install 7,000 stations across the country by 2020, doubled to 14,000 this by 2022."   NISSAN COULD BRING EPOWER TO EUROPE One of the regional variations around the world is the ePower drivetrain Nissan use in Japan. It first appeared on the small minivan Nissan Note and in both 2017, and in Q1 of this year, it's Japan's best selling vehicle. In fact 70% of all Note's are driven by ePower. And now Nissan is contemplating bringing ePower to the European market. Nissan could just move forward with pure electrics, after all they have the World's most popular EV in the LEAF which have 300,000 on the roads. But all car makers have more than one eye on the impending European CO2 targets which come into force from 2020, and are based on the emissions of the entire fleet of cars you sell. But what is ePower? It's most similar the range extender tech in the BMW i3 which everyone understands but it's subtly different. The car comes with a small gas engine which can work in it's optimal rev range all the time so it's most efficient, and works as a generator to charge a battery. You never plug it in because there is no plug. “We can do a 48-volt mild hybrid, or we can do a plug-in hybrid, but what is most interesting right now is the success we have had with ePower technology,” Ponz Pandikuthira, vice president of product planning, told Automotive News Europe.“ePower in Japan makes more money than Note made before we launched ePower. It’s an economies-of-scale thing,” he said. “It’s a very favorable equation. That is why we need to invest in this technology and bring it to markets outside of Japan.” Nissan has said it will bring ePower to the U.S., likely as an option on higher-end vehicles. The technology also will form a big part of Nissan’s electrification of the Infiniti line-up in 2021. Even though you put dinosaurs into it and not electrons, it's up to 15% more efficient than a diesel under the new WLTP testing. I think this is very interesting technology, and could strike a chord with buyers as Toyota are doing the groundwork with their advertising campaigns for their soft hybrids, but telling buyers they sell electric cars which charge themselves. Perhaps as a stop gap, i can see this technology working. And the fact it's so much cheaper for car makers makes me think they might try to push it - as the battery always drives the wheel plus the battery is smaller. However saying that, and looking at the rapidly changing economics of batteries, i can see it being a technology which ends up not being needed. If the costs keep coming down, at cell level and battery pack level, pure EV's will be cheaper than any other form of propulsion.   EVGO UPGRADES MORE THAN 20 FAST CHARGERS EVgo say they're making the electric vehicle charging experience as easy as possible for all drivers, and today's news is that they have added additional capacity at 21 California stations, meaning EVgo's network can power even more EVs. All of their new chargers have dual-standards, both CHAdeMO and CCS Combo at each station. 10 in San Francisco, 5 in San Diego, and 6 in L.A. Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo says "The old world is changing, and EVgo is rapidly expanding our network of over 1000 public fast chargers across the US so that more Americans can choose a better way to drive." CCS Combo connectors are used by the Chevrolet Bolt, BMW i3, and numerous other existing and forthcoming EV models from North American, European, and Asian auto manufacturers. CHAdeMO connectors are commonly used by the Nissan LEAF, Kia Soul EV, and (with an adaptor) Tesla vehicles. The 21 station upgrades from EVgo throughout California now have the capabilities to charge EVs using either CHAdeMO or CCS Combo connectors at both chargers. Find our more at evgo.com   GRID CONFIDENT OF MEETING EV DEMAND, SAYS MINISTER In the UK, let's get onto the subject of whether driving an EV will melt the grid and send us back to the dark ages. "The electrification of road transport will only result in a 10 per cent increase in demand for electricity by 2050, according to a government minister." and reported by UtilityWeek: "Richard Harrington told the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) select committee that National Grid had expressed confidence about the ability of the power networks to cope with the mass switch over, at the recent first meeting of the government’s electric vehicle (EV) task force." Richard Bruce director of energy, technology and innovation at the Department for Transport, said that the UK already had ‘one of the best public infrastructures in Europe’ for charging points with around 12,000 already installed, including 400 in the last 30 days alone.   COMMUNITY   From Ryan Hoffman: “The other day, you mentioned VW hadn't been fined in Europe for the emissions scandal. Hopefully, the link below works, looks like the Germans lowered the boom on Vee Dub. Forgive me if I'm incorrectly remembering what you said, I didn't go back to the show notes or re listen to the podcast. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-44474781. Also, there's a conference here in Portland, OR next week. I'm not affiliated with it in any way but perhaps a quick shout out to the listeners here in the Northwest could generate some interest as well as some reports back to you on the event. https://evroadmapconference.com/” “The public prosecutor issued an administrative order against Volkswagen on Wednesday, imposing the maximum penalty of €5m, and then €995m for the “disgorgement of economic benefits”. This refers to repayment of profits accrued through illegal or unethical means.” Can you help spread the word about electric cars? My first 10-Day 'silent meditation' retreat not only kicked my soul in the gut-balls. It made me face a dear friend's ugly, cancerous curtain call... And it made me Remember. BB (FEATURING THE MUSIC OF TOBIAS TINKER) --- They say there is no suffering at the heart of all things. That, in truth, there is no pain, or doubt, or loss. That all of space is Here.  And all of time is Now. That if you seek it, it will be shown to You. The truth of what Love is. And you only need to see it once to know that it’s real…   It seemed like a grand idea at the time.  Self-discovery!  Personal improvement!  Spiritual progression!  Ten days at a remote Buddhist retreat in southeast Thailand.  Eighteen hours each day to focus on ‘mindfulness’, in whatever task was assigned. The wake-up bell at 4AM.  Using candlelight to wash and dress oneself.   Bare feet on cold, wet grass.  Orion’s jewelled belt pointing the way through the jungle from a sky made of black velvet. They tell you that the struggles will come in sequence, based on what is taken away. First you’ll want to talk again. Then you’ll want a nice bed, and more sleep. Then better food, vegetarianism be damned. And then sex with others, or yourself. They say the real shit doesn’t kick in til Day 5. The deep dive. The sexes sit on opposite sides of the sand-floored sala. This divide persists for the duration.  Separate dorms.  Dining areas. Walking paths. Eye contact is discouraged.  A deeper, deafening silence. We are told what our days will consist of. Meditation. Yoga. Monk lecture. Rice soup and (fly-covered) fruit. Monastic chores. (sweeping for me) Meditation. Zen Walking. Monk lecture. More rice.  Vegetables.  A cooked rice ‘dessert’.  More flies. Thermal springs (oh yes) Meditation. Monk lecture. Zen Walking. Meditation. Tea. Meditation. Zen walking. Meditation. Lock-down. A rush for the communal toilets.  The sound of 40 men, dressed in coloured sarongs, ladling water over their heads and shoulders in unison. Slapping and scratching at hundreds of insect bites. Grunting and flatulating behind thin wooden doors. Gasping in frustration and disgust at having to ‘tidy one’s business the Indian way’. That's right, folks — wiping asses with hands. Candles again to navigate a 2x3m cell with concrete bed, barred window, mosquito netting, bamboo mat, and…wait for it…a wooden pillow.  If you’re lucky, then your room affords a slight breezy balm to humid 30C+ nights.  If you’re not – if you’re cursed with Karma like mine – then you’re right next to the latrine, the air is deathly still, and there’s a spider the size and furriness of a kitten guarding a pulsing egg-sack a few feet above your face. Somehow I drift.  Somehow peace finds me on the slab.  Somehow, sleep swallows me whole. I saw you in my dreams that night. We raised a glass and dined in silence in the belly of a dead whale…  (CONT)

It has been an absolute headache getting settled in India! I hope that the things I share here will be the worst of anything you will ever experience when moving to a new country or city, it certainly has been for me. Anytime I move, I always try to remember that things are not the way as I am used to and that I cannot expect immediate results. When I moved to Germany I was frustrated at finding a place for so long and some other differences in the ways of doing things. However, it seems like now in India the struggles are much higher. Although I was warned about this and had done a bit of mental preparation, actually being inside of it has proven to be frustrating and kind of makes me never want to move again. When we first came to Bangalore we stayed with some friends of my gf from a few years ago. They were very nice in letting us stay at their apartment and we had a nice bed under the foosball table. It was honestly quite comfortable but I wanted to get out because I felt I needed my own place to start getting settled in. I was anxious to move out also because the place I was going to work was a 2 hour bus ride from where we were located. But looking back, it was still a good location and we could be happy to be living there. After many days of deciding where we wanted to live, either close to work or close to the nightlife, we decided to stay at the Guest House on campus. This was a price friendly option and the living there was quite nice. It also satisfied my curiosity about having a maid clean the house and change the sheets, a potentially expensive option if we did this ourselves. We were sold on the idea the second that we saw it. It being only a few minutes walk from where we were going to do our work was also a big plus. However, it seemed to take a long time to get all the paperwork done for this. Perhaps I was just anxious to get out on my own, but every extra day felt like an eternity. Finally, after a week we were able to move in. This was about two weeks after we had come to India, honestly we thought this would be much worse! The place was furnished but we still had to get the small things that make it comfortable for living: refrigerator, stove, dishes, utensils, and other small stuff like this. This honestly added up and took considerable time to track down. Since we are students and are both cheap at heart, we wanted second hand items which was a bit hard in our neck of the woods. After about 3 weeks of living in the apartment we had collected everything that we needed. Another issue was internet. Did I mention I am a podcast host and I need Skype quality internet to work? Our internet was based on a wireless one for the whole Guest House and was only available in certain positions through the window. It was extremely difficult to get things done and Skype was out of the question. We eventually tracked down a wireless router after two weeks and set it all up. But it still didn't work! We had to do some fancy configuration and the guys from IT department came to our apartment to set it up. This was a frustrating extra week while we tried to make it work. I was fine without steady internet for the 3 months prior, but now that I was expecting to have good internet, not having it was really aggravating!! Finally it was fixed about 3 weeks after we came and has been good ever since. The hardest thing we had to deal with so far was getting SIM cards and replacing my stolen smartphone. This is also something that is incredibly important especially when you have gotten settled in a place and want to do more than just wander around. When you want to be in contact with people it becomes much more necessary. Since a residence permit is required to get anything done, it was absolutely horrible that the Guest House didn't provide ours. We honestly spent maybe 20 hours walking around and asking places if we could get it there. We tried all sorts of documentation that could be accepted, followed people's advice which led to a dead end on more than one occasion. Finally, I bought the used phone I wanted and got the SIM card a full month after arriving in India. Since in Germany a SIM card is something you can buy as an afterthought in a supermarket, I never thought it would've taken 20 hours and one month to get this done. Finally the traffic here is horrible! This is literally the worst traffic I have ever experienced or even heard about! Since we live in the Northwest side of the city and all the cool events happen in the Southeast side of the city, we have to travel across the city to do anything fun. Since rush hour is all day, we have to spend two hours in a bus to go each way. Four hours of transportation really puts a damper on anything you really want to see. This means that our nights out end up being mostly being in a bus and hanging out with friends for a short time before heading back. We want to buy a motorbike which could speed things up but the current monsoon season is slowing that idea down. Other than that we have mostly gotten settled into our new home until the end of November. It is starting to be more comfortable with all the luxuries of a real home. Now that all of the hassle is behind us we can focus on our work, meeting with friends, exploring southern India and learning Hindi. This feels nice :) So after all this complaining about the negatives of Bangalore, I have to say that it really is a very nice city. I honestly want to live here for a good part of the year. I recently heard about the 7, 3, 2 way of living where you spend 7 months in one place, 3 months in another, and 2 months in the last. I really like this idea and am currently thinking about doing 7 months of every year in India, 3 months in Germany, and 2 months in the US. The biggest plus on the side of Bangalore is the price. As a Westerner coming in the cost of living is really nice. Although there are many places where you can still end up paying western prices for a plate of food or beer, most places are very reasonably priced and you can get a plate of food for $1-2 and a beer for $1.50. With rent for the both of us being less than $150 per month and food being our main expense, it is easy to imagine that each of our monthly expenditures for EVERYTHING being less than $300. I had never been in a place that was so cheap and we can live quite well on $300 a month. If we wanted to really pinch pennies (or paisals here in India) we could probably even get that down to $100 a month and still live quite well with restaurants every day. Another great advantage here is the entrepreneurial spirit. This city is often called the Silicon Valley of India as it is home to many tech companies such as HP, Microsoft, Oracle, various biotech companies, and aeronautical companies. It really seemed that every Indian I had talked to either in the US or Germany had lived in Bangalore for some time. This is because it is so attractive to young educated people as the place to get your foot in the door on a successful career. The environment here certainly reflects that! I attended many MeetUps and it no longer came as a surprise when people said they had lived in the US or that they worked with companies there. Everybody has dreams of going abroad to make 5x more money. The startup scene is also quite alive. When you get young, intelligent, scrappy people together ideas start to form and dreams of making big businesses bloom. There are dozens of startup events to teach people how to do the founding process and get people thinking. This is a great interest of mine and am excited to be among the next Indian Steve Jobs, founder of Apple. It really was a welcome relief after being in Germany where the startup scene was not nearly as lively, with only about 20 people in my city interested in this sort of thing. Here, there were about 10 events per week, each with at least 30 people attending each of them! Finally the weather is quite sublime. It is a constant 60-90F (15-30C) throughout the year and is mostly sunny. We did come at a bad time, during the monsoon season where it rains the most but even this is not bad. The rain, although strong enough to need an umbrella, never lasts more than an hour and you can soon get along with your day if you happen to be stuck out at that time. So in the end, although it was quite a pain in the ass to get setup, it has been starting to pay off. I hope that being around this entrepreneurial spirit will infect me with some good business ideas. I like to say that Bangalore is a combination of the three main Californian cities: San Francisco for the tech startup spirit, Los Angeles for the infrastructure and traffic, and San Diego for the weather.   Hope to see you here soon!
