https://smallchangesbigshifts.com/things-i-wish-i-wouldve-known-the-hidden-impact-of-breathing-and-sleep-with-dr-nancy-addy-season-12-ep-516/What if the way you breathe, sleep, and hold tension in your body could be the key to unlocking better health and vitality? In this conversation, we sit down with Dr. Nancy Addy to explore the powerful connection between oral health, airway function, and overall well-being. She shares eye-opening insights on how small adjustments—like improving breathing patterns and posture—can lead to transformative changes in energy, sleep quality, and daily performance. This is a reminder that taking control of our health doesn't have to be overwhelming—sometimes, the smallest shifts create the biggest impact. Key Takeaways: Learning to breathe properly through your nose instead of your mouth can boost energy, improve focus, and even enhance sleep quality. The way you hold your head and jaw can impact your breathing, muscle tension, and even your mood. Small adjustments can make a big difference. Poor breathing habits during sleep can lead to fatigue and brain fog. Becoming aware of airway health can transform the way you rest and recharge. Chronic jaw clenching or tightness often signals deeper stress or imbalances. Recognizing and addressing these signs can unlock relief and vitality. Snoring in kids is not normal—it can be a sign of airway issues affecting their sleep, growth, and brain development. Identifying and addressing this early can lead to lifelong health benefits. Resources Mentioned: https://aadsm.org   About Dr. Nancy Addy: Dr. Addy is a graduate of UMKC School of Dentistry where she became an Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry.  In 1997, Dr. Addy delivered her first sleep appliance. This proved so successful that she started to treat more and more patients and soon realized what a valuable option Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) was for patients who suffered with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). In 1998, Dr. Addy joined the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2006. Dr. Addy has served as president of both the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. She regularly presents lectures on oral appliance therapy both locally and nationally. Dr. Addy's practice is located in Leawood, Kansas and has been limited to Dental Sleep Medicine since 2006.  Dr. Addy is devoted to the education and well-being of her patients who suffer with OSA and snoring. She is saving lives and marriages every day. Dentists can benefit from AI tools like chat GPT and copilot for financial management and analysis. Business education is crucial for dentists to succeed in managing their practices and making informed financial decisions. The transition from clinical dentistry to business ownership requires a shift in mindset and the acquisition of business skills. Minimizing student loans and financial planning are essential for dentists to achieve financial freedom and career opportunities. Debt can be a useful tool for dentists, but it requires a strategic mindset and the ability to manage it effectively. These are all the questions we'll be covering in today's episode. Hello, Protruserati. I'm Jaz Gulati, and welcome back to your favorite dental podcast. It's not often we do an episode on sedation. And Mike and Roy, today's guests are actually really good friends, and it makes total sense. You know, Roy was a fantastic calm communicator. I would feel very safe in his hands as a patient. And that's what we all want. We all want our patients to feel safe around us, and that come from how we communicate to our patients. And this one is about communication. I very often like to do well communication one and this is not because I am some sort of master of communication. This is far from it. This is just something that I've been very much in tune with myself. I try to reflect on my communication skills and try to improve, and I try to look at other clinicians when I shadow them or when I see them in practice.

Captain Thomas Berchtold references Stephen Covey's idea of investing in people's emotional bank account and provides several examples about how he focuses on the people on his team  to build a strong servant leader minded community. He points out that it is far better to postpone important conversations with people until you can give them your full attention or risk missing the mark and even creating an atmosphere of distrust. He shares a time when he failed as a leader because he wasn't being authentic and uses it to emphasize the need for each person to be true to themselves and use their strengths in their leadership opportunities. He looks for chances to help others along their path and provide them with recommendations that will help advance their journey and highlights the importance of having open and honest conversations early and often.  Captain Thomas E. Berchtold hails from Brigham City, Utah and attended Utah State University. He was commissioned as an Ensign, United States Navy through the Health Professions Scholarship Program and he attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he graduated magna cum laude and earned his D.D.S.  After graduation from dental school he attended an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in Jacksonville, Florida. After being in Florida 1 year, he was transferred to Port Hueneme, CA to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three (Seabees) for a tour as Dental Department Head.  The battalion had a six-month deployment to Guam during this time where he successfully led the dental department with multiple battalion detachments being all over the world from the main body of personnel. Upon completing his tour with the Seabees, he was transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego.  While in San Diego, his main duty was the division officer for the dental department at the Naval Submarine Base at Point Loma. He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics for three years of advanced training.  There he served as the Chief Resident for the Department during his last year of residency.  He received a Masters Degree in Clinical Dentistry as well as a Certificate in Orthodontics. After residency, CAPT Berchtold was stationed at 13 area dental clinic at Naval Dental Center Camp Pendleton (NDC CPEN).  He set up the inaugural orthodontic practice at Camp Pendleton and served as the orthodontic department head. He was then assigned to Naval Base San Diego Branch Health Clinic.  He was chosen as the assistant department head at Naval Base San Diego Branch Health and Dental Clinic.  His next orders were at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton where he was selected and served as the Director of Dental Services and served on the board of directors for the hospital until his transfer to Naval Hospital Yokosuka.  At Naval Hospital Yokosuka, he was appointed as Associate Director for Dental Services, the Dental Corp Career Development Board manager as well as working as a staff orthodontist.  He received his board certification from the American Board of Orthodontics during this time. From Japan, he was stationed at the Naval Medical Readiness Command San Diego as a member of the craniofacial team for the hospital and worked as an orthodontist to supplement the surgical treatment of patients for the oral surgery residency program.   Dr. Berchtold has been married to Julie Berchtold for 25 years and has four children.  Miranda, Jentry, Tate and Riley.  His oldest is married and will attend graduate school this summer and his youngest is still in elementary school.  He enjoys road bicycling, golfing, swimming, fitness, and eating good food and a little well known fact is that he has completed 5 half iron man triathlons and 3 marathons.  Resources:  Global Servant Leadership: Wisdom, Love, and Legitimate Power in the Age of Chaos - Philip Mathew, Jiying Song, Shann Ray Ferch, & Larry Spears https://books.google.com.mx/books?hl=es&lr=&id=ATQGEAAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PP1&dq=global+servant+leadership&ots=JvavIOHVQR&sig=JG6qdV4hOBhdTAiNYOEjBXofs6o&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=global%20servant%20leadership&f=false The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen R. Do you fit with USC’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry?[Show summary] Dr. Anita Tourah, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, offers an inside look at the dental student experience and admissions process. How an emphasis on research, education and patient care makes USC’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry unique [Show notes] Are you thinking of a career in dentistry? Worried about how to get in? Wondering what a dental education requires before you earn that DDS? My guest today is the Dean of Admissions at a top dental school. Dr. Anita Tourah is Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry and Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. She earned her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at Tehran Azad University and earned her DDS from Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, as well as a special certificate in prosthodontics. Can you give me an overview of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC's program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [1:46] Our school is focused on three fundamentals: research, education, and patient care. These are an integral part of who we are. If we go to the research, we've been consistently part of the top-funded private dental schools by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and we have trained many academic leaders who run NIH-funded research nationwide and worldwide. We encourage our students to do research, either basic research or translational research, and our faculty guide them to conduct that research and also put together the manuscript for publication. We host a very successful annual research day, and that's when our students, faculty, and postdoctoral fellows come together to show their innovative discoveries. We also have a publication, The Explorer, which has won multiple national awards that provides a comprehensive summary of all the innovative discoveries that we do at USC. The second fundamental is patient care. We are located in the heart of Los Angeles. We have a great and extensive array of patients for our students, and we have very extensive community outreach programs, such as Union Rescue Mission, Mobile Clinic, QueensCare, and numerous rotations to the hospitals and communities that give treatment to our patients. Many of those treatments are free for our patients. Education. We strive for the best education for our students and we always try to bring new technology, new equipment, new software, new faculty with new ideas. This commitment shines through in all that we do in the field of prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and so on. So at Herman Ostrow, we provide the best education for our students, we provide the best treatment for our patients, and we're always trying to find new innovations through our research program. Is research required for the students? How soon do they start in terms of patient care? [3:58] No, it's not a required part. But if they're interested, we encourage them, and we guide them and we support them throughout the process. Patient care starts in the third year. The first two years are mostly preclinical where they unlock skills and procedures. Once they complete that program, those first two years in a preclinical setting, then they go to the clinic and start patient care. Ostrow students have "significant preclinical experience, education, training, and restorative dentistry using simulators." Can you disclose what kinds of simulators? How does that work? [4:34] Dentistry is a very unique profession. Just think about it. We're working in a very limited space, and it's dark and everything is slippery. Everything is in either millimeter or it's in micron, so it could be very challenging to actually provide dentistry to the patient. We strive for excellence and we want the best quality for our patients, so therefore,

How to manage your Stress Effectively & Achieve More - Interview with Dr. Beth Rushworth Speaker, Editor, Writer & Award-Winning Dentist

In this episode, Brad’s guest is Beth Rushworth, Editor of the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry due in 2020, speaker, writer and award-winning Associate at the Ivory Dental Practice. The list of what Beth has already achieved is extensive and broad-ranging and she discusses with Brad the pressures and challenges that face young dentists as they begin to carve their careers and make their mark in the profession. Stress is a reality in any profession and Brad and Beth discuss in depth the ways stress can be recognised and effectively managed for dentists on their professional journey and in the achievement of goals. KEY TAKEAWAYS Dentistry is a stressful profession and working within it is stressful for anyone whatever their role. I identified early on at university that the ways in which I was rationalising and coping with stress meant I needed to take action. I had no ability to separate home and life and it became all-consuming. The physical symptoms of stress were becoming overwhelming and I immersed myself in different strategies to work out what was best for me to cope with the stress. Training myself early on in my career with strategies for coping means it is now more organic. I identified that it was my initial reaction that I needed to work on to manage my stress. With a patient complaint your initial thought can be panic, someone’s not happy, my careers over, everyone is going to hate me but the rational response is what’s happened? What can be done? What’s the worst-case scenario? It’s common in high-stress jobs for your perceived risk to be different from the actual risk. The perceived consequence is different from the actual consequence. Guided Meditations help me be structured and think about the right things. I have become better at scheduling my time to make sure there is time for me. I’ve worked hard to be in a situation where I can be more selective about what I do. 20% of what you do will lead to something else and be recognised you just don’t know which20%, I give 100% always. It’s never too late to change your direction and improve on where you are at and the situation you are in. Taking a step back and looking at what’s important to you creating structured steps to get you to where you want to be can be very effective in minimising stress and anxiety. BEST MOMENTS ‘I make a consistent effort with everything’ ‘I really believe that when you give things will come back’ ‘I wrote to 100 different magazines asking, ‘can I write an article for you?’ and only 1 replied and said yes’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Chimp Paradox book by Dr Steve Peters Dr Bethany Rushworth Instagram ABOUT THE HOST Brad believes that everyone at any level should be focused on achieving multiple sources of income to create diversity and balance in life. He feels passionate about helping dentists work towards freedom by building wealth in different areas and helping to develop a mindset to improve one’s ability to handle the stresses of clinical life. Still a practising dentist, Brad has implemented strategies to create a practice to allow him to carry out the dentistry he wants whilst continually expanding with loyal staff and patients. These strategies can be adapted to any dentist, whether you are an associate or the practice owner, to help bring back your passion for dentistry. In addition to running a successful private dental practice, he has grown several other dental businesses and as an investor is growing wealth outside of dentistry to help protect his legacy for his growing family. He is chair of the Horsforth Town Team, dedicated to the promotion and development of business in his local area in North Leeds, UK. Due to his track record and down to earth advice, he has become sought after as a mentor and spends part of his time dedicated to mentoring dental professionals about business, mindset and personal development. A podcast interview with Surinder Arora (@DrSurinderArora) Dr Surinder Arora qualified from the School of Clinical Dentistry, Sheffield in 2011 and has been practicing Privately in Singapore since 2014 Why should you move to Singapore if you are a Dentist? This should really be a personal choice – only you can determine and discover your WHY. It is important to consider how this affects your children/spouse/partner/family and business commitments. Why Singapore? Singapore is Asia Lite. It is a Metropolis. Dental standards are high, and the weather is 30C every day! I cover lots more of this in my article about returning from Singapore and my experiences. What was it like finding a job then, and is it any different now? It is much more difficult now compared to 2-3 years ago. This is because the Corporates are less likely to hire foreign graduates because you first need to be on Conditional Registration with the Singapore Dental Council (SDC). This is not really a big deal, except you need to be assigned 2 supervisors, and it is due to a lack of supervisors that can be troublesome. Only once you have had 2-3 successful years, under the eyes of a ‘Supervisor’, can you then work ‘solo’ with Full Registration. First, you need to find a corporate or a Dental practice that is willing to take you on and they will help you with your application to the SDC. Where can I look for an associate position? The Singapore Dental Association classifieds is your best bet! What can Overseas Dentists expect in terms of salary Expect anywhere between 35 – 55% remuneration. Average GDP can make $6 – 20 K SGD per month, net. A lot of practices/corporates will put a safety net for you in your first 6 months so you can get a ‘base’ minimum salary e.g. $7K per month. Bare in mind, however, that Tax is pretty damn low! What is Dentistry like in SG? High standard – but varies massively depending on where you are practicing. Even in this tiny island-country, the demographics of just a few miles are massive and will influence if you are busy or not. When I was there, I was doing very run-of-the-mill family Dentistry, perio, extractions and Dentures! Words of caution to UK/US Grads looking to work in Singapore? Although you do not need to sit any exams to work in Singapore, it has become very difficult to find a Job as a foreign graduate. Should you continue to pay GDC subscription? Short term answer: Yes, to avoid the hassle Long term answer: eventually, after working for few years in Singapore, you may wish to stop paying GDC subscription. Surinder emailed the GDC and as long as you keep all your documentation and evidence of CPD, theoretically it should take 10-15 days to get back on the register. Found this useful?
