Many times, we hesitate, second-guess, and wonder, What if I'm wrong? Third, we examine the fruit—does this prompting produce love, peace, and faith, or does it stir up fear and anxiety? God's voice leads to life.The final step? Step out in faith. God honors a heart that desires to follow Him. If you're unsure, pray, move forward in obedience, and trust that He will confirm or redirect your steps. He's a loving Father, not a distant taskmaster. He won't abandon you to figure it all out alone.Question of the Day: Have you ever hesitated on a prompting because of doubt or fear? The proving of AbrahamGod will put all of us to the test.-> There is a cost to discipleship Luke 24:26There will be a test of loveThere will be a test of faithHebrews 11:17-19 Abraham believed according to the promises of GodGenesis 22:5 Abraham obeyed the call of God.There will be a test of obedience (Even when it doesn't make sense.)Notice the place: Abraham had to go the RIGHT place. Vs. 9. The place: 2 Chronicles 3:1. This would be the place would the future temple where God would dwell.This would foreshadow God's work. This is a picture of greater sacrifice. This is also not that far from Mt. Golgotha. Absolute obedience is important to God. The picture: The cross of Calvary. Vs. 2. This is the first use of the word "love" on the Bible- the love of a father and a son. Matthew 3:17- This is the first use of the word "love" in the new testament- also a love between a Father and a Son. Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8-21Notice: Issac is a type of God the Son. -> He willingly obedient- even if it meant death. Issac is a type of a delivered sinner.Jesus took our place- We was our substitute.The provision: Genesis 22:7God will provide himself a lamb!Genesis 22:15-18 God CANNOT break a promise and He has the power to fulfill his own word.You will never out give God. (The Twelve)THEMES OF PROPHETIC LITERATUREProphetsProphet: a spokesperson on God's behalf“For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.”AMOS 3:7But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;1 CORINTHIANS 1:27God uses the minority to help steer the majority.Although Israel had many kings, they were not the ultimate authority in Israel. Rather, God's covenant word was the real authority. This is why God raised up the prophetic office to counterbalance the office of kingship. For every king, there was an opposing prophet or group of prophets ready to stick the covenant back in the king's face and call him to accountability to God's word.THE BIBLE PROJECTPast, Present, and FutureThey are prophets who speak what the people want to hear so that they can make a handsome living, not true prophets who suffer for speaking the truth (Jer. 32:1–5). Ezekiel 13:8–16 probably has in view the lying prophets who gave false comfort to King Zedekiah just prior to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC (Jer. 28). He compares them to those who whitewash a wall to mask its flaws. The people were supposed to build a sound house of truth and love for the Lord, but their sin was actually building a weak and compromised nation. Louie Marsh, 3-10-2021   Intro:   This episode sparked by an e-mail from a listener named John, who wrote:   Please check out my biggest and best book – Everyday in the Spirit - https://tinyurl.com/3fct42zn   I was listening to a podcast called "The Bible Project" and the guys on there bring up a point about the word in Hebrew that is translated into English as "soul" doesn't really mean what we think. They say we are translating it wrong and that we don't have a soul if you translate the word correctly it means the throat. The gateway to your innermost part of your body. I am confused about what that means as far as if I go to heaven or not when I die or what   Great question and indicative of a lot of what some people are saying these days about the soul and after life. In Hebrew the most basic meaning of the word is “throat.” Which seems weird to us. So how did we get “soul” from “throat”? Tim and Jon discuss. In the first part of the episode (0-12:30), Tim and Jon outline where the word “soul” comes from (Old English), and why most people think that a core teaching of the Bible is people “having souls.” Jon asks how much you can really separate the ideas of a person's “mind, soul, and body.” In the second part of the episode (12:30-41:20), Tim explains that the Hebrew word “Nephesh” is an extremely common word in the Hebrew Old Testament. It occurs over 700 times, but less than 10% of the time is it translated as “soul.” It also gets translated as “life”, “heart”, “you”, “people” and several other words. Tim outlines some famous verses in the Old Testament that use the word soul. Like Psalm 42 “ As the deer pants...My soul thirsts for you” the original meaning is Hebrew is “my throat thirsts for you.”   Tim explains that the word Nephesh is designed to show the essential physicality of a person. Whereas “soul” connotes the non-physicality of a person. In the third part of the episode (41:20-end), Tim says “Nephesh” isn't just used to describe humans, but also used to describe animals and what the land produced in Genesis. “And God said ‘Let the waters teem with living Nephesh.'” The bottom line, biblically, is that people don't have souls. They are souls. They don't have “nephesh” they are “nephesh.” And the ultimate hope for Christians is not a disembodied existence living as souls, but an embodied existence living in their Nephesh. Life Usage Number: 1 Part Of Speech: Noun Strong's Number:  Original Word: ‏נֶפֶשׁ‎, nepesh Usage Notes: "soul; self; life; person; heart." This is a very common term in both ancient and modern Semitic languages. It occurs over 780 times in the Old Testament and is evenly distributed in all periods of the text with a particularly high frequency in poetic passages. The basic meaning is apparently related to the rare verbal form, nāpash. The noun refers to the essence of life, the act of breathing, taking breath. However, from that concrete concept, a number of more abstract meanings were developed. In its primary sense the noun appears in its first occurrence in Gen. 1:20: "the moving creature that hath life," and in its second occurrence in Gen. 2:7: "living soul." However, in over 400 later occurrences it is translated "soul." While this serves to make sense in most passages, it is an unfortunate mistranslation of the term. The real difficulty of the term is seen in the inability of almost all English translations to find a consistent equivalent or even a small group of high-frequency equivalents for the term. The kjv alone uses over 28 different English terms for this one Hebrew word. The problem with the English term "soul" is that no actual equivalent of the term or the idea behind it is represented in the Hebrew language. The Hebrew system of thought does not include the combination or opposition of the terms "body" and "soul," which are really Greek and Latin in origin. The Hebrew contrasts two other concepts which are not found in the Greek and Latin tradition: "the inner self" and "the outer appearance" or, as viewed in a different context, "what one is to oneself" as opposed to "what one appears to be to one's observers." The inner person is nepesh, while the outer person, or reputation, is shēm, most commonly translated "name." In narrative or historical passages of the Old Testament, nepesh can be translated as "life" or "self," as in Lev. 17:11: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for [yourselves]…." Needless to say, the reading "soul" is meaningless in such a text. But the situation in the numerous parallel poetic passages in which the term appears is much more difficult. The Greek Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate both simply use the Greek and Latin equivalent "soul," especially in the Psalms. The first occurrence is in Psa. 3:2: "Many are saying of my soul, There is no deliverance for him in God" (nasb). The next occurrence is in Psa. 6:3: "And my soul is greatly dismayed; But Thou, O Lord, how long?" (nasb). In both passages the parallel contrast is between nepesh and some aspect of the self, expressed as "him" in Psa. 3:2 and not expressed but understood in Psa. 6:3. There is no distinction as to whether it appears as an "A" or "B" word in the parallelism. However, since Hebrew rejects repeating the same noun in both halves of a poetic line, nepesh is often used as the parallel for the speaker, primary personal subject, and even for God, as in Psa. 11:5: "The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence [he himself] hateth." Such passages are frequent, and a proper understanding of the word enlightens many well-known passages, such as Psa. 119:109: "My life is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Thy law" (nasb). The versions vary widely in their readings of nepesh, with the more contemporary versions casting widely for meanings.   Usage Number: 2 Part Of Speech: Verb Original Word: ‏נָפַשׁ‎, nāpash Usage Notes:Nāpash means "to breathe; respire; be refreshed." This verb, which is apparently related to the noun nepesh, appears 3 times in the Old Testament (Exod. 23:12; Exod. 31:17). The other appearance is in 2 Sam. 16:14: "And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there." Genesis 2:7 “7then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7, ESV)   “7Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the earth and blew the breath of life into his nostrils. The man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, GW)   “7And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, ASV 1901)   “7Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NASB95)   “7And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, KJV 1900)   “7And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NKJV)   “7God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive—a living soul!” (Genesis 2:7, The Message)   Psalm 42:1-2 Terrible suggested translation:  Like Psalm 42 “ As the deer pants...My soul thirsts for you” the original meaning is Hebrew is “my throat thirsts for you.”   “1As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1–2, ESV)   The Root Fallacy: (D.A. Carson)   Soul – GW, NASB, YLT, NIV, KJV, ASV, Darby,  I – HCSB, NLT, LB, The Message, Vol. 5, Page 55: “The poet compares the thirsting of his soul after God to the thirsting of a stag.”   Aside from the root fallacy there's the fact this is a metaphor. The writer is comparing a deer's thirst for water need to survive with his soul's (self, inner person, etc.) need for God.  The physical is contrasted with the spiritual.   Literally it was never intended as “throat,”  That's horrible and reflects a misunderstanding of metaphor and language as well.   BOTTOM LINE:   My soul is saved because I am saved! In the end I'll be reunited with my body, but that body will be changed.   The bottom line, biblically, is that people don't have souls. They are souls. They don't have “nephesh” they are “nephesh.”   “42So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.” (1 Corinthians 15:42–46, ESV)   So yes, you ARE a soul who inhabits a body and in the end Christ will redeem both!

Old and New and the SameSermon 7: Genesis 9As we approach this last chapter about Noah, let's not forget that these are the words of his sons. Our perspective is not Noah's, but that of three young men (well, they were over 100 - not so young) that witness God's dealings with their father.Noah is polarizing. Unsaved people mock this story and dismiss it, Christians are split on this story and they sanitize it. But God includes three chapters about his dealings with this man - we get more details about Noah's life than we do about Adam's.Noah and his family disembark the ark and build an altar to worship God. One of the questions I often hear is what happened to the ark? It's a huge ocean liner that ended up on the top of a mountain range. Why can't we find its remnants?The answer to my thinking is simple: they stepped off the ark into a world of destruction, where building materials were scarce. I imagine the ark was repurposed.An Old Command 9:1God blesses Noah and his sons and repeats His command from chapter 2: be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. Just as with Adam: go and fill the earth. And they did. We all are descendants from Noah. We descended from the man that survived the flood. It is a common record in every culture on earth. We are survivors of a cataclysmic flood that dramatically changed this earth. A New Change 9:2-7God changes man's relationship to the animals: he changes our diet and gives us BBQ. Humor aside, God clearly expands man's diet in verse 3.Sidenote: much of today's push toward vegetarianism and a vegan lifestyle is more about undoing God's decree than it is about the kind treatment of animals.This makes way for a very important stipulation God gives about man. He clarifies that man is not the same as animals and killing animals is not the same as killing a man. In poetic style the old command and the new change come together (verses 6-7): Man bears the image of God and they are to fill the earth.A New Covenant 9:8-17God makes an unconditional covenant with all of creation: you will never again have to fear judgment through a global flood: to destroy the earth. Can you imagine the fear that could have gripped their hearts the first time they heard thunder or the next time it rained? What if one of the brothers insulted the other and they felt raindrops on their head. Fear would have gripped them. God in His grace promises that they do not have to fear and he gives them a sign. At that moment, the brother can look up and see God's reminder. The rainbow is a wonderful sign that teaches us to remember, but that is not actually what God says in verse 14-15. God says the bow is there for Him to remember His promise. We tend to look at the bow and think that it is merely a bow, but the word used here is “war bow”, as in a bow and arrow… a hunter's weapon. The rainbow is God's reminder that hostility against man has ceased… He has hung it up. Spurgeon noted that God hung the bow pointed away from man and it's arrows now point to Himself. This could be a veiled reference to Christ's atoning work.What is most disconcerting, however, is that the LGBT community has taken this sign and repurposed it be their emblem.An Old Complication 9:18-29And then we read that something else stepped off the ark. Sin survived the flood also… it hitched a ride in their hearts (cf. 8:21). Noah plants a vineyard and gets drunk. Why? Well… why do you sin? It was a lapse in judgment, poor decision making, most likely a series of bad decisions. It is sad to read this, but the Bible presents us with the unvarnished truth. I am not going to comment too much this morning, because I will revisit this passage in four weeks - on Father's Day. Suffice it to say sin has not been eradicated. Despite God's sweeping judgment, man still sins. Man still rebels. Man does not obey. Man does not walk perfectly with God.There are parallels with Pentecost… an old command to love, a New Covenant in Christ's blood, a new sign in the coming of the Comforter, a new beginning in the Church, and the same problem: sin. But now it is different… Christ has come. God turned the bow of His wrath upon Himself and He took the punishment for our sin. We do not have to serve sin and we now have the indwelt Holy Spirit, who helps us walk with God. And He is the down payment for the glorious inheritance that awaits us. We still sin, but it's not the same… we look to the cross, knowing that the payment for our sin has been made. We look inward to the Holy Spirit, who compels us to walk worthy. And we look forward to the day of Christ's return.

The following is the outline of the class JESUS OUR PROPITIATION 4:14 -10:18 Chapter 4 An Exhortation to Enter God’s Rest “Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands” Difficulties with the word “rest” Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion 1st Rest: Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired? 2nd Rest: Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land Jesus Ἰησοῦς Mat 1:21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Mat 1:22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Mat 1:23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." Yahshua ַ הוֹשׁוּﬠ ְי -1) The first element is YAH, which is the commonly accepted abbreviated form of YHVH 2) The interesting word group that starts with YAH then the Hebrew verb (shua), meaning to be saved or delivered. -Yahshua is the name Joshua is a compilation of two elements. -Why Joshua? “Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands” Difficulties with the word “rest” Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion 1st Rest: Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Jesus the Son is greater than Moses Recap of Chapter 3 verses 1-6 Moses and Jesus were the only two Apostles of God sent to be exodus leaders. vs. 1 Both were faithful ln carrying out their Apostleship vs. 2 Jesus was worthy of greater honor because he created the Israelite race while Moses  was an Israelite- Moses did not make men, children of God, but Jesus does vs 3-4 Moses was a servant as an exodus leader, but Jesus is a Divine Son vs. 4 If we want to follow Jesus, our exodus leader, all the way into the promised land of heaven we need: 1. A hope of salvation to the degree that you glory in it. 2. For example a missionary’s prayer. 2nd way is to not believe/trust God – this is a bad way – this is how the Israelites did it – To question God’s motives. The OutlineThe King (2 Chronicles 26)King Uzzia was elected king by the people at 16 years old. At such a young age he was instructed by the prophet Zechariah (verse 5) in the fear of the Lord. This must have been a tremendous privilege for this young king - to have someone that helped him to continue to fear God. He reigned 52 years - a very long time and verses 6-15 chronicle his achievements as king.The turning point in the story comes in verse 16. When he had become strong - it went to his head. An episode in this king's life that changed him and his reign forever. He thought he could act as priest and burn incense before the Lord. The priests (80 of them) warned him not to do it and the king burned in anger toward them. And while the priests were watching him, leprosy started to grow on his forehead.The end of his life was one of seclusion - away from the temple and the palace - and his son ruling in his stead. The King of kings (Isaiah 6)This is the situation that forms the backdrop for Isaiah's vision. The king has died. His rule had lasted 52 years. He had made a tragic error in judgment. This attitude toward the things of God was reflected among the people.It was at this moment that Isaiah is ushered into the throne room of God and has a spectacular vision of the Lord, high and lifted up.Majesty (verse 1)What a difference with king Uzziah, who had tarnished his kingly majesty. The King of kings is still on His throne and the train of his robe fills the temple. That's impressiveHoliness (verses 2-3)Seraphim are guarding the holiness of God. They were created so that they do not look upon the holiness of God and they call out a warning. In the Hebrew language there is no punctuation, so where we would use an exclamation point, in Hebrew you would repeat it. The strongest way to say something in the Hebrew language is to repeat it three times. God is holy, Holy, HOLY! And even though it may not always seem like it, the whole earth is full of His glory.Sovereignty (verse 8)This last scene contains our question. But understand what is happening here. God is clearly shown as ruling and reigning in the affairs of men. He asks whom they (a veiled reference to the trinity) might send and Isaiah is quick to answer that he is willing. He then receives a commissioning to speak to a people that will not want to listen.This vision of the King of kings teaches us much that ought to encourage us in the times we live in. In turbulent political times, like a Brexit from the EU and a call for a referendum in the Netherlands… it is this scene in Isaiah 6 that lifts our focus from the earthly to the heavenly. God is still on his throne.Isaiah's response is really a pattern for us to follow.His first response is to acknowledge his own sinfulness. 5aSecondly, he considers the people he lives with: unholy 5bGod is unapproachably holy 6God sanctifies Isaiah. 7God's holiness shows our unholiness. But He doesn't leave it that way, but chooses to make us holy. And then he chooses to accomplish His work through us. And the call - or question - still rings today… Whom shall we send? Who will go for us? What will your answer be?
