While dance is often underfunded and under-recognized, leaders in the field acknowledge the incredible talent that lives within every dancer, reminding them that they are, in fact, ‘Acrobats of God'. Today's guest embodies the purpose of the Movers and Shapers: A Dance Podcast; to share insights from those who shape the dance field, and create an archive that preserves rich, personal experiences across generations. During this episode, Jeanne Ruddy shares what it was like to be a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and to work with Martha herself. You'll also hear how she forged her own unique role in dance, how she encourages other artists to flourish, and her passion for nurturing future generations of dancers in Philadelphia. Tuning in, you'll learn all about Jeanne's journey as a dancer, and finding her way to creative expression thereafter. Join us to hear all about the highs and lows of our guest's incredible career today.  Key Points From This Episode: ·       Her first experiences of dance and her lifelong love of music. ·       The changing dance scene of the 1960s. ·       The pivotal period of time for a dancer between 16 and 21. ·       Her experience at North Carolina School of the Arts and Utah Repertory Dance Theatre.  ·       Traveling to New York and starting a company with no capital.  ·       Getting a huge break with Yuriko Kikuchi after auditioning with Getting to Know You.  ·       Being chosen to be in the Martha Graham Dance Company and enjoying a ten-year career.  ·       Why Martha would sit in the second wing, stage right, in a director's chair, during performances. ·       The eventual decision to leave the company due to pain.  ·       The birth of the Performance Garage in Philadelphia.   ·       The program Jeanne currently facilitates for dancers.  ·       What Martha Graham taught: dancers are acrobats of God.  “I walked out of Deaths and Entrances, I was definitely a child of the 60s, and I didn't like it. Seven years later, I was playing one of the sisters in that very piece in Lincoln Centre. I loved it.” — Jeanne Ruddy  Jeanne Ruddy is a former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Company where she performed throughout the World, on Broadway, served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Alvin Ailey School, colleges and universities in the US and abroad, founded Jeanne Ruddy Dance, and a center for dance – the Performance Garage, in Philadelphia. We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business.  Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer.  Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age.   She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way.  She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead.  She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS.  On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD.  When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents.  She never considered herself a one trick pony.  Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities.  Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey.  Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow.  Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit.  Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development.  She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. (visit her on YouTube)  The Marishka Method.  She currently coaches Nafessa Williams (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Taja V. Simpson (The Oval) Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) and many more.  CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE YOUTUBE LIVESTREAM OF THIS EPISODE Follow US IG: https://www.instagram.com/highlymelanatedpodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/H_MelanatedPod YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb2VbyoW6KaMxQo5onYluXAIF YOU WANT TO BE A GUEST OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE A GREAT CHOICE, HIT US UP!!!FEEL FREE TO EMAIL US @highlymelanatedpodcast@gmail.com

Two healers. One conversation. Diving deep into their respective work healing relational trauma, treating grief, and how they have trained themselves to sustain joy, happiness, and ease... and continue, every day, to learn. If you have ever wondered what it takes, this is the episode to watch. "I don't look at things like good days / bad days. If I have a "bad" day I think of it as "I'm taking resources out of my bucket. I need rest. I need time to cry. I need a break from work in nature. And I use that. The next day - I refill the bucket. The third day - I get up, get dressed, and go out and conquer the world." - Bernadette "We're taught from a young age to ignore those kinds of subtleties. I love the system you've created for yourself. You have certain resources, and certain needs. Such a deep honoring of self, of your own internal eco system. For me, I had to take some time from expectations. From the habitual need to go deep into my feelings so much. There became a period where I started really paying attention to how I could create a softer of a wave. Listening deeply to spirit. Listening deeply to my physiology." - CC Treadway The first episode of our third season, From Heartache to the Art of Healing, filmed in August, is a rare glimpse inside what it takes to be a practitioner of healing and light. About CC Treadway CC has been through her own powerful journey of healing on all levels. She is the founder of LightSchool Arts, a mystery school for the sacred artist and healer to study esoteric knowledge, healing, personal process and deepen their creative craft. CC mentors and trains healers, helps women who have gone through sexual, relational and emotional trauma recover their power and creative fire, and loves to connect people directly to their spiritual guidance, igniting their soul purpose. She also offers laser focused, results driven transformational coaching. A classically trained singer, CC loves music and sang in the Thom Sessa gospel choir in Miami for 3 years. She also writes and performs original music and regularly tours with with devotional kirtan artist, Radharani. Her solo shows weave together classical, folk, channeling, storytelling and the sacred through passionate emotions - creating a rich, musical landscape from which to open the heart. She holds a BFA in film from the Rhode Island School of Design, studied at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance and is a graduate of the intensive, world renowned 6-year program, The Barbara Brennan School of Healing (Author of Hands of Light), among others. She also worked as a video editor for film, television (Discovery Channel/MTV/HBO) and independent projects for 15 years. An interview with writer, producer, director and actress Marianne Hettinger. Marianne Hettinger has always been fascinated by movement, absurdity and complexities of human relationships. This was already apparent in her first short film, "Shenanigans Point" in 2001. Budget: $6.95. She sees Woody Allen, Mike Leigh and Pedro Almodovar as her greatest inspirations. German press: Die Welt online, click Wikipedia and German Wikipedia for more info. Having come to New York alone as a teenager from a small town in Germany, she has found her own unique style. "I thrive in adversity. If people say I can't do something, I will use it as fuel to ignite my dream", she said after she won "Best Director" at the Detroit Independent Film Festival 2010 with her first feature "Mango Tango". Born and raised in Augsburg, Germany and then Leitershofen, a suburb with a population of only 2000, Marianne Hettinger saw the movie "An American in Paris" for the first time at age 5. This was the birth of her dream to come to USA to dance and act like Gene Kelly. it would take her 7 hours roundtrip to get to the closest dance studio in Munich by bicycle, tramway, train and subway. But that didn’t stop her. From "American in Paris" to "German in New York", Marianne arrived as a nineteen year old alone in Manhattan with only $800 in her pocket, not knowing anybody. Soon she was accepted by the prestigious National Shakespeare Conservatory on a scholarship to study acting and directing. Simultaneously she studied dance on scholarships at the Alvin Ailey School, Steps on Broadway, the Martha Graham School and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. At age 20 she wrote, directed and acted in her first play "Heaven & Earth" at the Cubiculo Theatre in Manhattan. Because of her femme fatale figure she appeared as a model in "Sports Illustrated", Elle, Men’s Health, Harper’s Bazaar, Self and on national TV. Marianne eventually turned down an exclusive modeling contract with the famous ELITE MODEL MANAGEMENT because of her passion for acting and dancing. The versatile actor has been featured in over 50 features, independent films and television shows and commercials. She’s worked with such acclaimed directors as Tim Robbins, Frank Oz, Michael Apted, James Toback and Warren Leight and was a member of the "A THEATRE CO" theatre company founded by Thomas Everett Scott. As an A-list dancer she’s brought down the house on Broadway in "Latin Rhythms" with Chita Rivera, in a duet with Antonio Banderas on the Late Show with David Letterman and as a solo guest artist with many national and international symphony orchestras and as a US and Canadian Ballroom Champion (American Rhythm and Theatre Arts). Combining her talents, Marianne came full circle in 2009 when she wrote, directed, produced and acted in her first feature film MANGO TANGO that won her "BEST DIRECTOR" at the DETROIT INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL as well as the "JURY PRIZE FOR BEST FEATURE" at the VENTURA FILM FESTIVAL and "MOST POPULAR FILM" at the "FUENF SEEN FILM FESTIVAL" in Germany. Marianne Hettinger makes New York City her home, a place that feeds her creativity. With her projects she entertains and touches people's hearts in her own unique way.

Charly Wenzel is a dancer, choreographer and virtual reality filmmaker. You may be able to tell from her accent that she’s originally from Germany. She moved to New York nearly 15 years ago to continue to study dance. It was there at the Alvin Ailey School that Charly met Teresa Fellion who you may remember from Episode 25. Charly danced for Teresa in the early days of Teresa’s company. After a few years exploring other creative venues including film, Charly joined forces with Teresa once again. Charly recognizes both her and Teresa’s styles have evolved over time making their collaborative efforts richer and more exciting. She currently works as the rehearsal director for Body Stories: Teresa Fellion Dance. Charly Wenzel is a big fan of immersive art. She currently performs in Third Rail Projects' immersive dance theatre piece, Then She Fell. The long-running performance piece moves the audience from room to room to meet different characters in the story. Then She Fell is based on the writings and life of Lewis Carroll and his interactions with Alice Liddell. Charly Wenzel just started working on a new piece for Body Stories set to premier in December at Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn, New York. Starting a dance piece from scratch begins with experimenting in the studio where the artists must imagine audience reactions while creating movement that tells a story. According to Charly, an immersive show gives performers an intimate experience with the audience. Charly believes audience intimacy helped her develop her skills directing dancers because anything can happen. An audience member who interacts with storytellers becomes part of the performance rather than passively watching a show. Cynthia Hennon Marino talked about this as well in Episode 41. In addition to live performance, Charly experiments with the storytelling possibilities of film. Her independent dance films use location, angles, and the ability to move in and out with a lens. Charly collaborates with a film director to create clear story focus. In filmmaking, as in theatre, each artist brings a skill set to the medium that makes it more exciting. Her film projection designs for Body Stories created a conversation between the live performers onstage and the images on screen. Currently, Charly is working on an immersive virtual reality dance piece on film. According to Charly, film festivals focusing on virtual reality films are creating a demand for experiential viewing. In virtual reality filming, the camera shoots 360 degrees. It creates some challenges as the 360 view can reveal crew members, equipment, and things you might ordinarily be able to avoid. The compelling part of virtual reality filming is that it creates choice for the audience. A 360 director must account for audience choice while shooting. Concise Advice from the Interview: 9 Keep your overall vision for a performance clear 8 Good ideas are like a ingredients that you can come back to or choose not to use 7 Every project helps you grow as an artist 6 Surround yourself with people you can learn from 5 Find people who want to work together to achieve a common goal 4 Keep an open mind 3 Find your own voice by immersing yourself in your art 2 Don’t worry about what you think people want to see 1 Stay true to your voice Check out the blog, SallyPAL.com, for articles and podcast episodes.
