Religious Studies scholar Jumana Al-Ahmad, Washington & Lee University, VA, USAexamines the relationship between Islam and human rights in Tunisia, analyzing how a number of Tunisian academics and activists deal with the situation where human rights are seemingly incompatible with conservative and traditional interpretations of Islam. How do these academics use Islamic texts in combination with modern methods and references to human rights to promote gender equality and justice? New Generation of Tunisian Feminists In doing so, Jumana Al-Ahmad focuses primarily on a new wave of Tunisian feminist activist and academic work that seeks to promote social justice and human rights and is grounded in Tunisian studies of Arab Islamic civilization. The focus is on three women researchers: Amel Grami, Zahia Jouirou, and Olfa Youssef. They dig deep into the Islamic tradition in search of contemporary solutions to what they see as stagnation and social injustice. The thesis shows how these feminist scholars promote gender equality, and social justice by bringing Islamic sources and publications into conversation with modern methods and references to human rights. Social change based on traditional Arabic texts themselves Jumana Al-Ahmad uses an interdisciplinary perspective based on religion and cultural studies, sociology, philosophy, and intellectual and social history. The works studied are mainly in Arabic, largely produced by women scholars, and deserve attention at the international level, especially since there is a gap between the writing and scholarship of Muslim feminists in the Anglophone world and that of Arab Muslim feminists writing in Arabic. This thesis contributes to bridging this gap and gaining knowledge. See: https://vu.nl/en/news/2022/tunisian-women-academics-reinterpret-texts-islam

In this episode, we are pleased to share a special conversation with Jumana Manna about her recent film, FORAGERS, which we discovered at Vision Du Reel this past April. Jumana is a Berlin based visual artist and filmmaker. Her work explores how power is articulated, focusing on the body, land and materiality in relation to colonial inheritances and histories of place. Her new film, Foragers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee and Jerusalem, Jumana artfully blends fiction, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. Israeli nature protection laws prohibit the collection of 'akkoub and za'atar, which have resulted in fines and trials for those caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land, while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Foragers intelligently moves between documentary, fiction, and archival footage, recounting the story of this contested land and its inhabitants with wry humor and meditative pace, presenting us with a work that invites reflection on the absurdity of living under Israeli occupation.Teyama Alkamli, moderates the conversation where they discuss everything from the inspiration for the film, to the ingenious use of discordant music, which, coupled with her generous use of wide landscape shots, helps to create an atmosphere of something ominous bubbling under the beautiful surface.

Psychology and health care in PalestineIn this podcast episode I speak with Jumana Kaplanian about psychology in Palestine and the stigma about mental health that still exists in the Palestinian society. Jumana holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and Psychology from Bethlehem University in Bethlehem and an MSc in Psychology from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford.Mental illness is considered one of the largest and least acknowledged health problems in Palestine. For decades the West Bank has suffered from political, social, and economic strife. Palestinians have been exposed to a series of traumatic events, such as imprisonment, torture, humiliation, human rights violations, house demolitions, land confiscation, restriction of movement, unemployment, and under-employment. As a result, many people suffer from various emotional and psychological traumas. The importance of psychological treatment in PalestineMental health service providers in Palestine usually offer support, rehabilitation, and counseling services for people dealing with psychological problems. Mainly, these organizations focus on counseling and treating the disorders rather than arming people with the required knowledge to realize the importance of psychological needs to seek treatment. In most cases, these organizations are the ones who approach people to offer help. In many other cases, people ignore their psychological distress for an extended period and only seek help when they reach advanced disorder stages. Awareness of mental health at Psychology SpaPsychology Spa works to raise awareness of mental health, fight social stigma, and achieve social transformation regarding mental health. Psychology Spa is the first specialized non-profit company in Psycho education in Palestine since 2016. Psychology spa is a place where groups meet to learn, discuss, share, and seek ways to gain psychological knowledge. Jumana likes to call herself a serial procrastinator, she has dedicated years of her life, the last decade, to be more specifically researching self-control and overcoming motivational obstacles, especially focusing on procrastination and diminished motivation. During her Ph.D was when Jumana finally discovered an effective and efficient way to get herself to do everything that she needed to do in order to achieve her dreams. She is also the creator of the brand I am Striver, which is dedicated to helping people overcome debilitating motivational obstacles and reclaim their power to do great things. They work to help innovators, artists, and entrepreneurs who experience a motivational struggle to complete their projects by using scientifically-backed strategies that rely on manipulating the body and the environment instead of using sheer willpower.Where you can find more about Jumana's work:Website: https://www.iamstriver.com/YouTube: I am StriverInstagram: @jumana_the_striverSupport the show

Jumana Musa joins EFF hosts Cindy Cohn and Danny O'Brien as they discuss how the third-party doctrine is undermining our Fourth Amendment right to privacy when we use digital services, and how recent court victories are a hopeful sign that we may reclaim these privacy rights in the future. In this episode you'll learn about: How the third-party doctrine is a judge-created legal doctrine that impacts your business records held by companies, including metadata such as what websites you visit, who you talk to, your location information, and much more; The Jones case, a vital Supreme Court case that found that law enforcement can't use continuous location tracking with a GPS device without a warrant; The Carpenter case, which found that the police must get a warrant before accessing cell site location information from a cell phone company over time; How law enforcement uses geofence warrants to scoop up the location data collected by companies from every device that happens to be in a geographic area during a specific period of time in the past; How getting the Fourth Amendment right is especially important because it is part of combatting racism: communities of color are more frequently surveilled and targeted by law enforcement, and thus slipshod legal standards for accessing data has a disproportionate impact on communities of color; Why even a warrant may not be an adequate legal standard sometimes, and that there are circumstances in which accessing business records should require a “super warrant” – meaning law enforcement could only access the data for investigating a limited number of crimes, and only if the data would be important for the crime. Jumana Musa is a human rights attorney and racial justice activist. She is currently the Director of the Fourth Amendment Center at the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. As director, Ms. Musa oversees NACDL's initiative to build a new, more durable Fourth Amendment legal doctrine for the digital age. The Fourth Amendment Center educates the defense bar on privacy challenges in the digital age, provides a dynamic toolkit of resources to help lawyers identify opportunities to challenge government surveillance, and establishes a tactical litigation support network to assist in key cases. Ms. Musa previously served as NACDL's Sr. Privacy and National Security Counsel. Prior to joining NACDL, Ms. Musa served as a policy consultant for the Southern Border Communities Coalition, a coalition of over 60 groups across the southwest that address militarization and brutality by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in border communities. Previously, she served as Deputy Director for the Rights Working Group, a national coalition of civil rights, civil liberties, human rights, and immigrant rights advocates where she coordinated the “Face the Truth” campaign against racial profiling. She was also the Advocacy Director for Domestic Human Rights and International Justice at Amnesty International USA, where she addressed the domestic and international impact of U.S. counterterrorism efforts on human rights. She was one of the first human rights attorneys allowed to travel to the naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and served as Amnesty International's legal observer at military commission proceedings on the base. “You have to earn the trust of people to share with you what it's like to be them out in the world.” Jumana Abu-Ghazaleh is the Founder and President of Pivot for Humanity. This comes after a diverse and winding career in advertising, marketing, digital design, and entrepreneurship, which Jumana decided to synthesize into a mission focused on bringing ethical reform to the tech industry through professionalization: creating a body of shared community standards and oversight, just as medical and legal industries do. By creating a defined set of values, including ones of social responsibility, and a framework of shared accountability, Jumana believes that Pivot for Humanity's mission can guide the evolution of the most influential industry -- technology -- in all our lives into one that honors the power and responsibility it holds in society.Key Takeaways:How the commercialization of the Web brought the concept of friction to the forefront of every aspect of commercial design- for better or worse; How the race to reduce friction has willingly sacrificed human interaction, perspective, and patience; How eliminating friction in digital design naturally creates mindless, habitual, and addictive behavior around those technologies; How an “efficient” and “time-saving” outlook has directly impacted creative thinking, team cohesion, innovation, and work satisfaction; How trust and the concept of psychological safety - between teams, organizations, and communities - may be more valuable to productivity and innovation than any other value; How the professionalization of tech jobs can create and define an ethical, prosocial framework for the wealthiest and most influential industry Favorite Quotes:“We're engaging with things without thinking about them, almost as though we're on autopilot when we're doing it.”“Growth comes from friction. Understanding, openness comes from friction. Experience really begins at the edge of your comfort zone.”“You have to earn the trust of people to share with you what it's like to be them out in the world.”“When Google makes most of its money on advertising… a lot of what it does is designed to please those advertisers, which turns us into products.” Support:This podcast is made possible by you — our listeners all over the world — from Brazil to Australia, the USA to Singapore. Jumana guides women beyond the limitations of talk therapy and into a personal homecoming that will become a foundation for truly healthy intimacy in the future. Break the Grip of Past Lovers addresses regret, remorse, low self-esteem, and the inability to connect fully or trust someone new. Jumana guides the reader through experiences of betrayal, neglect, loss of personal power, manipulation, and even experiences that were so beautiful that they have left grief and irreconcilable longing in their place. The journey she presents is a journey of initiation into power, catalyzed by the kind of heartbreak and loss of self that only past sexual relationships can provide.

Jumana Sophia’s work articulates the soul road of womanhood and the nobility, the eternal rightness and the incorruptible beauty of female sexuality and sacred femininity. She writes, “This is a time of remembrance, and my work will foster an intimacy with yourself that is True. That feels like Home.” Jumana and I went deep in our discussion about what it really means to be an authentic woman; to let it emerge and to express as it naturally longs to. We talk of how women steward the “womb of the world” and underestimate their power in just BEING. In this episode: What is the healthiest, highest-vibe definition of “worthiness”? How do periods of transition in our lives become initiations into the unfolding of our true natures? What is the fulness of womanhood? (Hint: it has much to do with our natural creative force, a generative power which seeks to express through us) How does self-nourishment and SELF-THRIVING produce the highest kind of service to others? We speak with Jumana Jaber, who in 2013, packed up her family, locked up her house, handed a neighbor the key ... and became one of the millions of families to escape Syria. In Damascus, the Syrian capital, Jumana taught art and theater design but thanks to the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund, Jumana found work taking her talent to Montclair State University. Just over a year ago, she opened the doors to Watchung Plaza's Le Souk which in the middle east is an outdoor marketplace. There Jumana invites guests to gather, sip some tea and enjoy bites of authentic middle eastern treats, just like they would in her home city. She also fills the shop with beautiful imported gifts from Syria, Turkey and Morocco. She hopes after listening, you just drop by to say "Good morning, Jumana."

Jason Thompson and Jumana Al Hashal are a husband/wife cartoonist & project manager duo who have turned to collaborative game design. Their first game, Mangaka, was a pictionary-esque take on the Japanese comics industry, and their new game Cartooner looks to both skewer and explore the US version of the comics art form. We talk about the game, of course, but we also get into what it’s like to collaborate with your significant other, getting “civilians” excited to draw comics, the mechanics of getting your game (or comic) out there in the world, and of course Manga. Jason is the author of Manga: The Complete Guide & was an editor at the US version of Shonen Jump, among other things. The life of a manga editor is something we haven’t had the opportunity to get into before, so we found that to be pretty interesting & maybe you will too. But First! Mike & Zack talk about their history with non-video gaming & RPGs before getting into their SECRET ORIGINS! As in, key moments of their path to becoming cartoonists. SECRETS REVEALED: Early influences (John Byrne, really. It’s just John Byrne), first comics, Predator, first collaborations, and how meeting their first real life professional cartoonists (Eric Vincent for Zack & Evan Dorkin for Mike) crystallized something they may or may not have already known: Cartooning was a potentially depressing but also exciting thing that they too could do!

On the season finale of Food Without Borders, host Sari Kamin is joined by mother and daughter Rawia and Jumana Bashara of the restaurant Tanoreen, a blend of classical Middle Eastern home-style cooking with delicious Mediterranean aromas, located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Tune in to hear them discuss how food is politics, in the best, most inclusive sense.

This week on Radio Cherry Bombe, host Julia Turshen is joined by two incredible women in food representing totally different sectors and generations of the industry. First, hear from Sue Chan of Toklas Society. The Toklas Society is a network of women in the hospitality industry. Through online content, meet-ups, speaker events, and workshops they create opportunities not just for networking, but also for inspiration, education, and personal and professional growth. Next, hear from Rawia Bishara of Tanoreen Restaurant. Rawia Bishara opened Tanoreen in 1998 as a tribute to her mother’s rich culinary heritage and over the years it has won countless accolades. She teaches at the renowned DeGustibus Culinary School and her recipes have appeared in Plate Magazine, New York Magazine and The New York Times. Rawia now runs the restaurant, a unique family-owned and operated enterprise, with her daughter Jumana. Today’s program was brought to you by White Oak Pastures. “I don’t have anybody in my life that I can look up to and get advice, so selfishly I wanted to hear those stories from other women.” [07:00] –Sue Chan on Radio Cherry Bombe “My son and daughter are more exposed to things outside than I am. Little by little we created our own style of cooking but kept our traditions. The whole idea of the restaurant is to expose our culture, which is a beautiful culture.” [20:00] –Rawia Bishara on Radio Cherry Bombe
On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Rawia Bishara's journey from Nazareth to New York, carries a soulful tradition through Middle Eastern cuisine, but she also introduces powerful new flavor profiles through her personal approach to cooking as experienced at Tanoreen in Brooklyn. In her first cookbook, “Olives, Lemons & Za'atar”, many of those restaurant dishes are put into an intimate context, from lunching under olive trees in Northern Israel, to mixing in Moroccan spices to stews during Ramadan. There will be mezzes, tagines, kibbeh cooked and raw, plus Americanized twists on recipes like, Salmon in Pesto and Eggplant Napoleon. Be it in Bay Ridge or beyond, Rawia's recipes will forever transport you to Galilee. This program has been sponsored by Fairway Market. Image by Todd France “People always seem to congregate in the kitchen when they're at home and we did that as well.” [6:30] –Jumana Bishara on The Food Seen “It's nice when people know what's involved in the dish they're in love with.” [17:00] “It's about passion, it's not just about ingredients.” [18:30] –Rawia Bishara
