In this final full episode of Series Eight, host Andrew Martin meets Irish genealogist, speaker, occasional podcaster, and Project Infant founder, Daniel Loftus. He asks Daniel how he got hooked on researching his family history, challenges he's faced with DNA testing and adoption, and why he's leading a project that brings Mother and Baby Homes in Ireland under the spotlight. If you'd like to volunteer for Project Infant, you can do so at: https://projectinfant.ie/volunteerTHE LIFE STORY - PATRICK WHELAN  Daniel has chosen to tell the life story of his Great Grandfather Patrick ‘Pax' Whelan, who was born to Patrick (known as ‘Patsy') and his wife Bridget in 1890 in the coastal town of Dungarvan, in County Waterford, Ireland. Sadly though, Bridget died when Pax was aged 8, and his youngest sister was just one month old. With tensions building in Ireland and in World War One, Pax's brother Michael enlisted in the British Army… but to Pax – who'd joined the local branch of the Irish Republican Army, this was unacceptable and the brothers ceased speaking for decades.Whilst Pax didn't really speak of his time in the Army, Daniel has managed to find sources in museums and archives that help tell the story of his Great Grandfather.THE BRICK WALL - PATRICK LAVIN and ANN BRENNAN  A vanishing act in the 20th Century is what is causing Daniel to collide with a Brick Wall – he's looking for information on Patrick Lavin (or Lavan) and wife Ann Brennan.Daniel doesn't know much about this couple, but he has found that Patrick was born circa 1854, and Mary Brennan circa 1861.The couple married in January 1882 and remained around the area of Kiltimagh, County Mayo, in Ireland, and had a family of six daughters between 1882 and 1893.However, Daniel is stuck with trying to find much about their parents. He knows Patrick's father was alive in 1882 and also called Patrick, but that Ann's father John had died. The last time Daniel has found Patrick and Ann in the records is on the 1911 census – and then they just vanish!Where did Patrick and Ann go after 1911?If you think that you have a research idea or clue that can help Daniel to overcome his brick wall, then you can find him via the links at his Carrd profile or drop him a message on Bluesky or Twitter. Alternatively, you can send us a message via our contact form and we'll pass your message on.In the meantime, Daniel accepts Andrew's offer of help, but will he agree to an important errand too?- - -Episode Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerDaniel Loftus - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetőfiThank you for listening! In today's no-bullshit episode of Ann's No-Bullshit Marketing Podcast, we're diving headfirst into the goldmine of SEO for home service companies. Ann Brennan, your no-nonsense host, doesn't just skim the surface; she digs deep into how countless home service businesses are blatantly leaving money on the table by ignoring the basics of website optimization. This episode is a wake-up call to all home service companies out there: optimizing your website isn't just a fancy digital tactic; it's your ticket to grabbing that low hanging fruit in the SEO world. From making damn sure your website visitors immediately understand what you do, to leveraging your BNI and chamber memberships for high authority backlinks, Ann covers it all. If you're tired of generic SEO advice and ready for real, actionable strategies specific to home service marketing, this episode is your holy grail. Use Long-Tail Keywords  Understanding Customer Search Habits: Dive deep into the specific phrases and questions your potential customers are typing into search engines. Long-tail keywords often capture the exact intent of the user, making them more valuable for targeted traffic. Content That Matches User Intent: Create content that directly addresses these long-tail queries. Whether it's blog posts, FAQs, or service pages, ensure your content is rich with these specific phrases that potential customers are searching for. Competitive Edge: Long-tail keywords are generally less competitive but highly specific. By targeting them, you're likely to rank higher in search results for users who are closer to making a decision or purchase. 2. Get High Authority Backlinks: Leveraging Relationships: Utilize your business connections, such as suppliers, industry partners, and local business associations, to secure backlinks from their websites. Quality Content: Produce high-quality, informative content that others in your industry will want to link to. This could include original research, comprehensive guides, or insightful commentary on industry trends. Guest Blogging and Collaboration: Reach out for guest blogging opportunities on reputable industry sites or collaborate with influencers and thought leaders. These partnerships can result in valuable backlinks to your site. 3. Optimize Your Google Business Profile: Complete and Accurate Information: Ensure every detail in your Google Business Profile is complete and up-to-date. This includes your business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, and services offered. Encourage and Respond to Reviews: Actively encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and make it a point to respond to them. This not only shows prospective customers that you value feedback but also signals to Google the legitimacy and activity of your business. Utilize All Features: Make the most of all the features Google offers, like posts for special offers or updates, adding photos of your work or team, and answering FAQs directly on your profile. By focusing on these strategies – utilizing long-tail keywords for targeted content, securing high authority backlinks for credibility, and optimizing your Google Business Profile for local visibility – home service companies can significantly enhance their online presence and SEO effectiveness. Ann Brennan: Ann Brennan is not your average marketing guru. As the host of Ann's No-Bullshit Marketing Podcast and the brains behind ASMM Digital Marketing, Ann is a powerhouse of marketing expertise with a no-holds-barred approach. She's here to deliver the hard truths about home service marketing, cutting through the shit to bring you straightforward strategies that actually work. Ann Brennan is the owner of ASMM Digital Marketing and host of the Small Business Connections podcast and has a passion for marketing. Ann has her own show ASMM Digital Marketing, and it's a wonderful resource of information about marketing. I had a lot of fun talking to Ann because her marketing is different than what you usually would expect from a marketer. We talk about some of the highlights of social media marketing, in particular.    Here at Law Firm Mentor, we always recommend that you choose the best strategy, not just any strategy, for your goals. However, if there's any reason why you have resistance around hiring an agency. This is something that you can learn how to do to actually get traction in your business.    Listen in to learn more!   In this episode we discuss: The immenseness of the social media audience. Turning your podcasts or blogs into a content distribution system by breaking up content into smaller pieces. The importance of consistently posting to avoid having to re-build. Determining what your brand is and who your audience is. The effectiveness of being authentic in your messaging and knowing the core values your business is built upon. A shift to being ‘more human’ and what that actually means. Guest Bio:   Ann Brennan is the owner of ASMM Digital Marketing and the host of the Small Business Connections Podcast. I really want to focus on the big picture of of what I offer in my business. Ann Brennan: Well, so what I would say is that it's you're right, you don't want to talk in soundbites, but you have to have a place to put your content, right? So you create this beautiful podcast. I do the same thing. I create a podcast. Well, am I just going to put it out there that one time and hope people come and listen to it? No. I'm going to take it, I'm going to break it into bits and I'm going to share those bits on social media.   00:24:17 (41 Seconds) Allison Williams: Yeah. So there is so much to integrate. And this is like a, this is one of those areas that we could literally riff on, like all day every day for probably a week and not and not even scratch the surface of all there is to cover with the way to effectively handle digital marketing. But I do want to ask you if you had to encapsulate what would be the most important thing about digital marketing? What would it be? Ann Brennan: I'm going to be one hundred percent honest. Consistency. If you can only post, if you're like, I don't, I'm not going to hire an agency. I don't have the money. I don't have the time. I just don't want to hire an agency yet. Then at least post. And post every day.

Chris Brogan joins us for this episode of the ASMM Small Business Connections Podcast to talk about why you should think about your business as a show. In today’s marketing space, it is more important than ever to figure out how to engage your audience between their purchases when they may or may not want to buy. For 2021 and beyond we continue to find new ways to gain our audience’s attention.   We discuss: “Why should a business think about itself as a show?” “You’re changing your title to ‘Showrunner.’ What’s that about?” “Can you run a business without thinking about it as a show?” “What are the practical elements to work through to make a show?" Turning your business into a show is a means of packaging your business’s information to stay top of mind when our audience is deciding to buy. Gain someone’s attention and make good use of it. We learned in 2020 that localized businesses do really matter and that the community will support their local businesses. The showrunner role is similar to that of the CEO in regard to theme maintenance. The CEO’s responsibility is to define the vision of the business while recruiting and nurturing the staff who are going to keep the vision flowing. As a showrunner, the question to answer is, what do I need to do to take into account the theme or scope of the business. The marketing goal of the showrunner is to get the little rectangle box out of someone’s pocket and gain the audiences’ attention. Chris uses the Mandalorian as an example. The showrunner-CEO is the director who ensures the theme actor delivers their lines in character, staying with the theme as a whole. The showrunner figures out new ways to run your business. Chris Brogan is president of Chris Brogan Media, offering business storytelling and marketing advisory help for mid to larger-sized companies. Chris is a sought after keynote speaker and the New York Times bestselling author of nine books and counting. He’s working on his tenth: title forthcoming. His latest project is The Backpack Show: a business show dedicated to finding insights from unusual places. Thanks for listening and be sure to subscribe.
