Another Casual Frightday, another quick reminder for folks who don't know...for over a year now, we've been doing Friday night broadcasts on Twitch where we discuss all the bizaree stories that we wish we had the time to deep dive into, but can't due to the production schedule of Frightday. As Sam Bankman-Fried is found guilty on all seven counts in the biggest crypto-related trial to date, I'm joined by author Zeke Faux, whose scintillating new book Number Go Up: Inside Crypto's Wild Rise and Staggering Fall has been the must-read book of the summer for me. Equal parts hilarious, head-scratching and powerful, Zeke does a tremendous job of taking us inside the crazy world of crypto – starting with a subject close to my own heart: Tether. Zeke follows the trail of extraordinary characters who inhabit the ecosystem of the world's biggest stablecoin on a journey that brings him into contact with all the major figures in the Cryptoverse and on a wild ride to ApeFest in Manhattan. Whether you're a crypto believer or a fellow skeptic, the book and this conversation are a rare treat. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Copper Tier subscribers get access to all podcasts, while members of the Silver Tier get both the podcasts and my monthly newsletter, Things That Make You Go Hmmm… Gold Tier subscribers have access to my new series of in-depth video conversations, About Time.

Welcome back, Bleaklings! In this almost-monthly installment, Kevin kicks things off with musings on quitting smoking and bad celebrity posts. Then, Kevin, Matt, and John get into another segment of "Crazy Hometown Guy," as well as some wild news stories ranging from crypto meet-up eyesores to baffling house listings to gimping bans! This one really has it all, folks!
If at all possible, try to divert your attention away from the t-shirts. The first rule of T-Shirt Club is: you do not talk about the damn t-shirts! The larger issue at hand isn't Freddy trying to revive the puffer style from the 1980s, it's the onerous regulations placed on private funds, particularly in light of the absurd proclamations frequently spewed by Cathy Wood. On a lighter note, does anyone remember the childhood dream of becoming an astronaut? Carson shares a few excerpts from a NYT article that might make you reconsider. South Korea demonstrates its lack of creativity with yet another short selling ban. The incels at ApeFest discover a whole new meaning behind 'laser eyes.' Freddy has another business idea for football hooligans-in-training, but being English and all, he's forgiven for not knowing that axe throwing is a Loggersport that's been around since the 1940s. And Carson pushes back against the incompetence of yet another law professor.

Last week in crypto, we saw Bitcoin rise to $35k, and that trend continued with another year-to-date all-time-high this week, at the time of recording bitcoin is trading at over $36,000, passing the $36k mark. Along with other altcoins, Toncoin saw a price rise as well - to it's highest point in nearly a year. Right now, Toncoin is trading at $2.63, up over 20% from its price 30 days ago. It's suggested that this spike can be attributed to Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram who announced last week they would give away 10,000 premium subscriptions for the Telegram App. Durov specified in his announcement that he procured the premium accounts with TON tokens, totalling around $200k. Attendees at ApeFest, a convention based on the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, returned for the event in Hong Kong this week. However, some attendees reported extreme eye pain after attending, with a small handful hospitalized. Yuga Labs, the digital assets company behind the event, shared a post on X, addressing the concerns and concluding this was likely the result of UVA emitting lights that were used at the event. London's City Minister, Andrew Griffith, is championing the role of crypto in London's financial portfolio. In a recent conversation with David Merritt, Griffith shared he perceives London as a potential hub for emerging domains such as cryptocurrency and AI, capitalizing on London's reputation for quality and trust. Griffith stated: “I think it builds naturally on our strengths in terms of things like tech and payments”.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year, globe-spanning quest to understand the wizards behind the world's new financial machinery. Faux's investigation would lead him to a schlubby, frizzy-haired twenty-nine-year-old named Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF for short) and a host of other crypto scammers, utopians, and overnight billionaires. Faux follows the trail to a luxury resort in the Bahamas, where SBF boldly declares that he will use his crypto fortune to save the world. Faux talks his way onto the yacht of a former child actor turned crypto impresario and gains access to “ApeFest,” an elite party headlined by Snoop Dogg, by purchasing a $20,000 image of a cartoon monkey. In El Salvador, Faux learns what happens when a country wagers its treasury on Bitcoin, and in the Philippines, he stumbles upon a Pokémon knockoff mobile game touted by boosters as a cure for poverty. And in an astonishing development, a spam text leads Faux to Cambodia, where he uncovers a crypto-powered human-trafficking ring. When the bubble suddenly bursts in 2022, Faux brings readers inside SBF's penthouse as the fallen crypto king faces his imminent arrest. Fueled by the absurd details and authoritative reporting that earned Zeke Faux the accolade “our great poet of crime” (Money Stuff columnist Matt Levine), Number Go Up: Inside Crypto's Wild Rise and Staggering Fall (Crown, 2023) is the essential chronicle, by turns harrowing and uproarious, of a $3 trillion financial delusion. Investigative reporter Zeke Faux, author of “Number Go Up: Inside Crypto's Wild Rise and Staggering Fall,” discusses his adventures covering the cryptocurrency market, from connecting with Sam Bankman-Fried before the collapse of FTX to attending "ApeFest," convincing his wife to let him spend $20,000 on an NFT as part of his book research and more. He also notes that despite its trading popularity, having crypto used as currency remains a struggle, even in the countries that have tried to adopt its usage. Forensic accountant Tracy Coenen talks about digging into the more obscure and esoteric documents -- insurance policies, car titles, estate-planning paperwork and more -- and making a timeline to help uncover forgotten or missing accounts (something Chuck experienced personally in his own case) in the latest installment of "Find Me The Money," and Mike Venuto, chief investment officer at Tidal Financial Group talks ETFs in the Markt Call.

Welcome to the GM Web3 podcast, where we dive into the latest happenings in the world of finance and technology. Today's episode is packed with exciting updates:Equities are off to a strong start with the S&P up by 0.6% and the Nasdaq surging by 1%. Interest rates are still a hot topic, with recent retracements from yesterday's peaks. While the Fed FOMC meeting is on the horizon, this month, we have the Jackson Hole event, historically a significant moment for the Fed, known for sparking extensive commentary. Last year was a bit of a letdown, but this time, there's something brewing. In the crypto world, there's the usual Binance FUD, but it appears to be centered around rumors. Binance has been making headlines for teaming up with MoonPay after grappling with banking and access issues. On the ETF front, we're still waiting for a decision. The tech world is buzzing with anticipation as NVIDIA prepares to unveil its earnings report today. NVIDIA plays a pivotal role in tech stocks and the NASDAQ, being the sole producer of the LM chips crucial for recent AI advancements, such as ChatGPT. Everyone's eyes are on this stock, eager to find out just how much they've raked in.But that's not all. We had the privilege of hosting @dalegre, the CEO of Yuga Labs, on the show. He's had an impressive journey, transitioning from his COO role at Blizzard Entertainment to becoming a key player in the web3 space. With a background that spans Google, Activision, and the gaming boom triggered by Covid, Dale shared his insights into web3 and the Yuga Labs story. In his own words, "It is so important for a company to have a healthy culture," and he's passionate about building culture on the blockchain.Dale dropped some intriguing hints about developments in Europe, although it's not related to Apefest. He also shed light on MEebits, hinting that holders are in for something special in the coming months. Stay tuned for more updates! This episode is a whirlwind of financial insights and crypto revelations, so don't miss out. Tune in to GM Web3 and stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving world of finance and technology.Gm! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Interest rates sold off a little bit going into the FOMC this week. Stocks remain strong but Crypto seems to be continuing to weaken. Bitcoin dominance dropped off slightly. Tonight we have Microsoft and google earnings reports coming in. Tomorrow we will have some more interesting information but the actual FOMC meeting won't conclude until after the show. Mando expects some volatility despite the current disconnect between trad markets and crypto. Do you think we saw a local bottom in these price ranges?NFTsIt's been an ugly 7 days in NFTs, most things are all in the red. Bored Apes are heading towards 30 ETH, it looks like Machi hit a dump wall. Rektguy saw a move higher, with the Chad founders buying back some of the collection in a recent sweep. Opensea has been on their deactivation arc again, people are loosing access from their accounts with no direct explanation at all. It might be everyones favorite marketplace but is certainly not decentralized and there will always be regulations and motives coming from certain interests there. The "Made by Ape" initiative is surfacing and being received very well. "This is the most bullish case for The Bored Ape Yacht Club" - @farokh Enabling people and giving people the tools to create business around the IP of their apes is very powerful. Luca Netz, who is considered an IP king in the space, is on record saying any ape under 100k is a steal as entrepreneur. Also, big hype around Apefest in Hong Kong, set to be in November. We had an incredible close to stocks last week and, believe it or not, equities are up again today approaching ATH's. The next big catalyst will be the FOMC on the 25th and 26th of July.Crypto for whatever reason just doesn't want to break through. Bitcoin is back under 31k and ETH is back below 2k. Bitcoin dominance remains and, despite its price drop, alts weren't demolished this round.Mando is super bullish on Macro here, he thinks we will see a massive rally into things like growth stocks. Inflation could head towards 1-2% at this point and coupled with higher interest rates we could get the soft landing that many dream of. A growth narrative back in the US could lead to a painful rally that nobody is prepared for.We have as good a chance as any to make some big 10x-20x moves, the big risk gets the big bag. Position yourself accordingly.Binance is under more scrutiny for letting go of employees, and being added to high risk lists in certain areas of the world. The fear is high but the information we have on their assets is solid and nothing compared to what we might have seen if we had the same information from FTX. CZ has explicitly said that he has never borrowed against BNB, which offers some slight comfort. It definitely feels like there is something unknown to the public surrounding Binance and the current Bitcoin levels. It currently costs you 3-400% a year to short BNB, which alludes to big money being in the know.NFTSLowest volume day of the year in NFTS with under 7k eth. Crypto punks were the only thing making moves with PunksOTC bought a block of punks from Beanie; from that block we saw a zombie and some hoodies trade for proper prices.A gold Pudgy penguin was purchased by Rollbit for 69 ETH marking a high, likely due to a loot box.The @notthreadguy open edition by @jackbutcher has raised over 30 ETH and received tons of attention. It got so big that @beeple put the event in his everyday, which is massively epic.Coolcats announced they are teaming up with Animoca to launch their game causing the floor to pump up a bit to .8 ETH.Apefest is set to be in Hong Kong which is epic and huge win, and the stage agrees Apefest should be in a different part of the world each time.STUBSWe had @MattScobel on as this week's STUBS artist! Matt has not only made tons of his own art, but he also helped market and produce Cath Simard. The one and only, Spottie WiFi.My mind was blown when I saw a photo of Spottie performing at ApeFest and realized that I knew him from his days touring the Midwest!Mig's a killer musician who somehow managed to achieve the monumental task of getting a law degree while performing 3-5 shows a week as a touring artist. After nearly a decade long hiatus from music, he came back as Spottie WiFi where he's set the bar when it comes to building brand alongside NFT IP. Here the thing: Mig didn't build a CryptoPunk brand. He isn't drafting off of the CryptoPunk name as typically happens in the NFT space.Instead, he's built a brand and business that has his CryptoPunk at its core. You can almost say that Punk #5528 is the mascot for the Spottie WiFi brand rather than the Spottie WiFi brand being the #5528.It sounds like semantics, but the way he's used his CryptoPunk as a starting off point, a rough sketch of sorts, and has built up on the framework from there is a work of genius.I genuinely believe Mig's found a way to tread new ground when it comes to NFT IP and brand development and there's so much that can be learned from diving into his story.I didn't even mention the impact he's had on the music industry, garnering enough attention to even get a nod from Snoop Dogg himself.More about Spottie: https://spottiewifi.io——Do you need help with brand and smart contract/web development for your NFT project?Work with me at RYPS!Mint or collect NFTs from projects that I've worked on: SkullKids: Generations (Mint | OpenSea) Frootlings (Mint | OpenSea) Do you need help developing your brand and business?Work with us at SPYR!——Enjoying the show?

This week's podcast was a bit delayed due to one of the host's wedding addictions (The other host is addicted to divorces; you figure it out). We dive into a recap of NFT.NYC shenanigans and how it reaffirmed 3's feelings about leading the pack when it comes to how a culture/community should work in this space. Little update on Thr33zi3s, little recap of Father's Day insert, a crash course on teamwork, and last but not least, the proverbial tortoise/hare pacing fable. Oh, and a lil $3p alpha at the end… Season 9 is back from All-Star break tomorrow (June 27th) with the release of 007-011, see you at LFG for the spinning of the wheel.Topics: NFTNYC Recap, Pride in the Project, Apefest &F*ck up this floor, Thr33zi3 Update, Father's Day Recap, Teamwork, Pacing
