"It's important to understand that disability is contextual. One can be both enabled and disabled by their neurodivergence depending on the environment and the task at hand."-Nancy Doyle"The way we diagnose and support neurodivergence needs to evolve. We're still using outdated models that don't consider the full spectrum of human cognitive diversity."-Nancy DoyleSummary:In this episode of "Psych Tech @ Work," I welcome my new friend Nancy Doyle, founder and CEO of Genius Within and visiting professor Birkbeck, University of London. In my opinion Nancy is one of the world's most expert and on-point voices on the topic of Neurodivergence, especially as it relates to the world of work.It was a real honor to spend an hour with her discussing the complexities and nuances of neurodiversity in the workplace. Nancy brings her extensive experience in IO psychology and coaching to the conversation, offering insights that challenge traditional views and practices around neurodiversity.Nancy shares her journey into the field, highlighting the transition from disability support to specializing in neurodiversity inclusion. Nancy is doing hero's work emphasizing the need for flexible and inclusive workplace practices that go beyond tokenistic inclusion programs and truly address the functional needs of employees. She also discusses the limitations of current diagnostic practices and the potential for AI and machine learning to aid, but not replace, the nuanced understanding required for effective support.Topics Covered:Early Career Experiences:Transition from academic learning to practical applications in the workplace.Differences between academic theories and real-world scenarios.Practical Applications of Neurodiversity Inclusion:Importance of creating flexible and inclusive environments tailored to individual needs.Common workplace accommodations that can enhance productivity and well-being.Impact of Technology and AI:The potential and limitations of AI in diagnosing and supporting neurodivergent individuals. How machine learning and big data can help identify common needs and effective accommodations.Genius Within: The amazing work Nancy's company, Genius Within is doing in providing assessments, coaching, and organizational design services to support neurodivergent individuals, creating inclusive workplaces that enhance productivity and well-being.Takeaways:Understand the Context of Disability: Recognize that neurodivergence can be both enabling and disabling depending on the environment and task. Create flexible workplace policies that accommodate individual needs.Move Beyond Tokenism: Avoid tokenistic inclusion programs and instead focus on practical, everyday accommodations that support all employees.Utilize Free Accommodations: Many effective accommodations, such as allowing quiet workspaces or flexible seating, are cost-free and easy to implement.Leverage Technology Thoughtfully: Use machine learning and big data to identify trends and common needs among neurodivergent employees, but be cautious with AI diagnoses due to embedded biases.Promote Continuous Learning: Stay informed about the evolving field of neurodiversity and be open to adapting workplace practices to better support neurodivergent employees."Take it or Leave it" Articles:In the most fun part of the show Nancy and I discuss two articles and give our opinions on the authors' takes."The Danger of Neurodiversity" From the Spectator UKSummary: This article critiques the neurodiversity movement, arguing that it may dilute the challenges faced by individuals with severe conditions. It highlights the need to balance the celebration of neurodiversity with the recognition of serious disabilities.Discussion: Nancy acknowledges the validity of the critique but criticizes the article's tone. She emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that respects all experiences of neurodivergence. "The Rise of Neurodiversity at Work" From Psychology TodaySummary: This article discusses how companies are increasingly recognizing the value of neurodiverse employees but warns against tokenistic inclusion programs. It advocates for tailored support that genuinely meets the needs of neurodivergent individuals.Discussion: Nancy agrees with the article's critique of tokenistic programs and stresses the importance of functional performance and everyday accommodations.
This is a warning for our culture as we are falling into a mode of far more consuming and far less creating. Two episodes ago I had business strategist and purpose expert, Mike Zeller, author of The Genius Within. A profound statement he wrote in his book, that I find to be a great challenge to us all, is this, “You don't become great by reading other people's great thoughts, shouting mantras and even surrounding yourself with great people. You have to think your own great thoughts and believe you can be great, then act in great ways.” We can fall into the trap of consuming and consuming a never ending supply of great information. It's inspiring. It's hopeful. And we will benefit to varying degrees from the exposure. But at the end of the day, if we're going to experience greatness from ourselves, we must take what we've learned and create something. Offer something. We make a decision on a value we believe we can deliver and we deliver it. We evolve from consumer to creator. From spectator to the stage. And in a way that uniquely fits you, which we also miss and I'll speak to in just a moment. Consumer vs creator Hey, got a comment or question about an episode? I keep thinking of all the other writers who also have these sorts of protagonists. The cops of Karen Slaughter, Ian Rankin and Peter James are not exactly happy guys who are at peace with the world; their relationships are in shambles; they are eccentric. It's probably like taking the mad genius idea and remoulding it to fit the flawed cop. I know this character, Borei Gowda, so well; I know what he can do and what he can't do. His own flaws allow him to see the world with a certain cynicism. But then every cynic is maybe also a naive idealist. In many ways, Bangalore and Gowda are synonymous with each other" - Anita Nair, author, Hot Stage, talks to Manjula Narayan about writing a police procedural series, how personal agendas often drive even political crimes, and creating believable characters with familiar tics and hypocrisies
According to a NASA study, 98% of children born today are creative geniuses. After a few years in school, this number is reduced to 12%. Why is this? He's experienced the ups and downs of losing a million dollars then a deep mental health battle his wife faced. Now, he helps high performers release self sabotage by rewiring their identity, build a new belief infrastructure, and shed negative energy to create flow state consistently in their lives. Paul Stevenson is a lived experience ambassador at Genius Within and a public speaker. Genius Within is a social enterprise established in the UK to help neurodivergent people unlock their talents, whilst acknowledging and celebrating that this diversity forms part of the rich tapestry of human experience. They advise governments on policy and provide consultancy to businesses, driving systemic change that allows all employees to thrive. They provide in-work support in the form of coaching, training and assessments. They also support neurodiverse/neurodivergent thinkers who are not in the workplace, who might be studying, unemployed or in the criminal justice system. As Paul says of himself “I have Tourette Syndrome- it doesn't have me! I'm not broken and don't need fixing.” See https://geniuswithin.org/what-is-neurodiversity/ for further information on Genius Within. "And I started to analyse where these tics were coming from, you know, tics in Italian - and I can't speak Italian. So I spoke to one of the guys who I work with, and he said, is it possible that when I was young, everything that I've heard all the words that I've absorbed, actually remain inside my head? I never forget them, but maybe lost the ability to recall them. But everything is there as a memory and Tourette Syndrome, the vocal tics, has an ability to access those in a rapid sort of speed."
Have you ever met someone new, only to realize that you'd forgotten their name moments later? Or, have you ever “blanked out” on something while under stress? We all have episodes of forgetfulness like these from time to time – but fortunately, there are many ways to strengthen your memory, thereby helping to boost your success in business and in life. As a two-time Guinness Record holder for Most Decks of Playing Cards Memorized in a Single Sighting, Dave Farrow is a master of memory improvement techniques. To earn this prestigious world record, Dave recalled the exact order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards using his signature Farrow Memory Method. Originally created to combat his dyslexia and ADHD, this unique memory system has been backed by a double-blind neuroscience study from McGill University. Dave is also the CEO of Farrow Communications, the author of “Brainhacker: Master Memory, Focus, Emotions and More to Unleash the Genius Within,” and has been featured as a guest speaker on over 2,000 interviews in the media. As our guest in Episode 138 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, Dave shares various “brain hacks” and the explanations behind them, including: Simple techniques for remembering names and overcoming stress-related memory blocks How breaking up tasks into smaller chunks, as well as avoiding the “reward principle,” can help anyone – kids and adults alike – study and retain information more effectively How a better memory can help you in business, and techniques for boosting sales, no matter your industry To learn more about Dave and his methods, look for his new book, “Brainhacker,” on Amazon.
