The film follows Rachel de Leon, an investigative journalist at The Center for Investigative Reporting, and her incredible work to uncover a disturbing pattern in the US: A surprising number of legal cases involving young women who report their rape to the police, get charged with false reporting, and instead of receiving help get thrown in jail. Victims/Suspect just premiered on Netflix and while incredibly triggering, it's riveting and a must watch! Today on the show we have writer/director Chloe Okuno.Chloe is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a masters degree from the American Film Institute Conservatory. There she received the Franklin J. Shaffner Fellow Award, and directed the award-winning horror short film SLUT.Her recent work includes writing a remake of “Audrey Rose” for Orion Pictures and writing and directing a segment of the anthology series V/H/S/94. She's the director of this year's Sundance feature film Watcher.Julia joins her husband when he relocates to his family's native Romania for a new job. Having recently abandoned her acting career, she finds herself frequently alone and unoccupied. One night, people-watching from her picture window, she spots a vague figure in an adjacent building, who seems to be looking back at her. Soon after, while alone at a local movie theater, Julia's sense of being watched intensifies, and she becomes certain she's being followed — could it be the same unknown neighbor? Meanwhile, a serial killer known as The Spider stalks the city.Below is the story of making The Watcher from Chloe's POV.In making “Watcher,” I wanted to capture a kind of constant, uncomfortable dread that accompanies many women throughout their lives- one that is expressed through the character of Julia. Julia moves into this apartment building with her husband and quickly begins to believe she is being watched. She recognizes that the Watcher is a threat. She feels it very clearly- even if it's difficult to articulate the extent of that threat to the people around her. It's a situation that's probably quite familiar to most women. We experience the world in a different way than men and then when we try to express that experience, we're often doubted- written off as paranoid, irrational, or overly sensitive… which in turn can make us begin to doubt ourselves. This has always been at the core of a story that in other ways has evolved greatly since I was first hired to direct it in 2017. Initially, the script was set in New York City, but when it became clear that we would be shooting the movie in Romania, I decided to rewrite it to take place in Bucharest. There are times as a filmmaker where practical limitations end up being creatively very freeing- unlocking something great when you're willing to embrace the unexpected. This was one of those times.Suddenly, Julia's experience as a foreigner in this new city heightens all her other feelings of unease and uncertainty. She finds herself increasingly isolated- largely unable to speak the language and therefore alienated from everyone around her. There were of course natural (sometimes uncomfortable) parallels shooting the movie on location in Romania: unable to speak the language, oftentimes sequestered in a hotel room amidst the raging pandemic, and occasionally fighting against the doubt that surrounds you as a woman working in a male dominated profession. Fortunately, life didn't fully imitate art. I finished the movie without any nightmarish descent into Watcher-style darkness, content with the hope that all of the tension found its way on screen. The filmmakers I admire are the ones who are able to create a language for emotion through their craft, translating what they feel into a form that other people can see and experience for themselves. For Watcher I was inspired by the work of David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Satoshi Kon, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and Mary Harron- filmmakers who have excelled at translating fear, loneliness, and alienation. The hope is always that there will be someone else who can empathize- telling stories so that we can take comfort in the recognition of ourselves in others. As a person filled with seemingly endless anxieties, making films is the best- and possibly the only- way I've found to confront them. I've done my best to portray them honestly in this film, and I can only hope that those who have experienced similar fears and anxieties will find solace in the knowledge that they are not alone. Enjoy my conversation with Chloe Okuno. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

This episode featuring experiential artist, Barney Steel, is about how we can all open ourselves up to new ways of seeing and being in the world - through the power of curiosity. And features one of the most profound moments of tenderness - that Barney experienced at the age of 11 - that we've heard during season one. Where Barney describes a feeling of being "connected to the deeper mystery of what it is to be human."This deep sense of curiosity is expressed through Barney's work with the experiential design studio, Marshmallow Laster Feast, where, along with his co-founders, he creates multi sensory installations. In this episode we discuss the myth of separation and how it impacts on consumerism and climate change: "If you feel separated from the natural world it's much easier to treat it as a commodity," And the power of experiential art. "For me, virtual reality is a world that can help to expand your perception and enable you to see things that are happening all of the time. From the bacteria in your gut to the trees breathing, it helps you to see the rich world around us that we're not aware of," Barney Steel, is an artist whose visual imagination has taken him from directing music videos for bands such as Depeche Mode to exhibiting immersive experiences at The Sundance Film festival and London's Saachi Gallery. He is currently the founder and creative director of the design studio, Marshmallow Laser Feast, that uses science as a springboard to explore the mystery of life. Barney currently works in south east London where he lives with his partner Sandra and their son, Elio. Filmmaker Malcolm Ingram talks about his Kevin Smith Documentary Clerk and its world premiere at South By Southwest (SXSW)festival in Austin, TX. Ingram, a longtime friend of fanboy filmmaker Kevin Smith essentially grew up in the film industry together as the latter went into debt to make his first full length feature film Clerks, which celebrates its Silver Anniversary this year. Ingram spent three years with Smith in making this documentary and at one point during filming, the two refused to talk to each other over a particular person who is walking human waste that Ingram absolutely did not want featured in Clerk, but that Smith insisted on explaining the situation. Official Synopsis: Clerk is an examination and celebration of the life of Kevin Smith - and an exploration on how one kid from Jersey completely transformed the cultural landscape. A journey which began 25 years ago at the Sundance Film festival where his DIY film ‘Clerks’, financed on credit cards took the film world by storm. Leading to a career as a filmmaker, podcaster, stand-up comedian, author, comic book writer, television producer - a veritable pop culture icon with a very large and loyal fanbase. We conducted a phone interview with Ingram about Clerk, how the film Clerks has influenced two generations of filmmakers since it debuted in 1994, the openness of Kevin Smith, how Ingram was on stage at another film festival when the bidding for Red State was to commence and even handed Smith the hockey stick during the auction. Our conversation was very candid, open and a lot of fun, which he and I will have to pick up at another date when discussing future projects or just out in Los Angeles, CA having a beer. “Everything in art, everything that we have achieved in the world, comes from our basic desire to tell a story.” – Farbod Ardebili   Welcome to the Conscious Creators Show; where through intimate and insightful interviews with authors, actors, musicians, entrepreneurs and other podcasters, you'll learn tools and tactics to 10x your creativity and strategies to grow and monetize your audience.   Farbod Ardebili was born and raised in Iran/Tehran, where he wrote and directed numerous stage-plays and started an Underground "illegal" Metal Band, which was the first to release a Persian language Metal album on the worldwide platforms of the time. In 2013, he wrote and directed his first short Film "Ellipsis," and thanks to its international success, he became able to move to the United States. In the last five years, he's been busy making, moving and forming friendships, and his recent Films and new projects have been supported, recognized, and awarded by organizations such as Sundance Film Institute, Festival Du Nouveau Cinema, Oaxaca FilmFest, and more.   On today’s episode of the Conscious Creator podcast, host Sachit Gupta speaks with filmmaker Farbod Ardebili. They discuss his background and the limits on creative work in Farbod’s native Iran, what brought him to the US and the unexpected culture shock he experienced, his filmmaking, and more. Find out why it was important to Farbod to have a female protagonist in the movie he filmed back home, why he believes art matters, and what it means to be a conscious creator.   Episode Highlights:  Growing up in Tehran, Iran where he wasn’t allowed to create the art he wanted to make taught him that sometimes limitations lead to the most creativity. The image that western media portrays of Iran only represents a very small percentage of Iranians and isn’t anything like that. For Farbod, he actually had reverse culture shock coming to the US, realizing that people here aren’t as open minded and welcoming as we seem in movies. It isn’t the financial means that Farbod sees as the biggest difference between Iran and the US, because he grew up wealthy and actually downgraded by coming to the US, but it’s the freedom. He grew up making films and being creative in other ways, including winning a painting contest when he was a child. Farbod started a band, initially playing softer rock so that they would have an easier time getting government approval, but eventually throwing caution to the wind and playing heavy metal like they wanted. After a while, they started to have issues and had to put the band on hold. To continue making music, Farbod couldn’t focus on the risk he was taking. He got his Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, then transitioned into film. There are a lot of differences in practical terms between music and film, but at their core they have a lot of similarities too; both media have tempo, rhythm, theme, and arcs. Farbod’s process from when he has an idea for a film to actually making it starts with an image and then you need the courage and will to follow it and make it happen. He couldn’t get government permission to make movies because they found out about his metal band, so he decided to make a movie without permission in the middle of the desert where nobody would bother coming after him. He came to the US as a film student about 5 years ago. Farbod wanted to make a movie about his experience but if he wasn’t able to make it as authentic as possible, in Iran, with Persian actors, it wasn’t worth doing and he couldn’t go back to Iran to risk jail. To make it work, Farbod directed the movie from the US while his friends filmed it separately in Iran. The film is about a woman singing in a metal band, which is a big deal because in Iran, women are not allowed ot sing solo in public in any genre. He chose to have a female protagonist because he wanted to highlight the ways that women have it worse than men in Iran. Sachit sees Farbod’s work as giving voice to the voiceless. Farbod doesn’t know what it means to make art, but he knows everything humans do comes from our desire to tell a story. Most stories in the world contain a sense of justice. To be a conscious creator, you have to have an awareness and consciousness about justice and what is right in order to tell those stories. We make art and tell stories in order to find the goodness in ourselves, but the worst parts of ourselves too.   3 Key Takeaways: Iran isn’t anything like the way the media portrays it to be. You can’t focus on limitations when you’re making art, or it can stifle you; at the same time, limitations can create the conditions for the most exciting creativity. Everything humans do comes back to a need for storytelling in order to make sense of the vastness of the world around us.   Tweetable Quotes: “The one thing that I can tell you that you really should appreciate much more is the freedom you have—freedom to speak, freedom of expression. You can tell, you can say, you can show what you want to say. That’s the biggest reward.” –Farbod Ardebili “When I was doing it, I wasn’t thinking I’m risking my life, I’m so fucking brave. I knew it was risky, but I wasn’t focusing on that.” –Farbod Ardebili “I had a professor there, he always used to tell me ‘Farbod, you are so lucky.’ I was like why am I so lucky? ‘You are so lucky because you have such a fucked up life.’ His point was it makes you more creative.” –Farbod Ardebili “Everything in art, everything that we have achieved in the world, comes from our basic desire to tell a story.” –Farbod Ardebili “When you tell a story you have to be the good person, in some sense. You have to be conscious to be able to make a judgment that people can connect to.” –Farbod Ardebili   Actions:  Subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts or on your favorite podcast app and let us know what you think by leaving a rating and a review.
