Michael Hall: Holding The Reins of Resilience - Healing Warriors Through The Power Of Horses

Team Never Quit

Holding the Reins of Resilience – Michael Hall's Mission to Help Warriors Heal In this powerful episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Michael Hall, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL from BUD/S Class 267 and the founder of Hold the Reins, a groundbreaking non-profit organization dedicated to equine-assisted wellness and coaching for special warfare operators. Michael shares his journey from the battlefield to the barn, explaining how his deep love of horses and his firsthand experience with the challenges of military life led him to create Hold the Reins. This program provides early intervention tools to help Navy SEALs, SWCC, and EOD teams develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication skills, and goal achievement—all through the incredible connection between humans and horses. With the unique pressures that come with a career in special operations, divorce and suicide rates remain devastatingly high among service members. Michael recognized this crisis and made it his mission to provide a lifeline—a safe space where warriors can regain control, reconnect, and find healing. Now, as he transitions into running Hold the Reins full-time as CEO and counselor, he's determined to give back to the community that shaped him. Tune in to hear Michael's inspiring story, the science behind equine therapy, and how his program is changing lives one ride at a time. In This Episode You Will Hear: • [My dad] asked me blankly one day, “What do you want to do?” It was just one of those things where I just spit out the first thing that my heart said, “I want to be a SEAL.” (8:43) • The Air Force recruiter looked at me, “Well, whatcha been up to since you graduated high school?” I didn't hold anything back. I just gave him anything. He was like, “There's no room for you in our Air Force.” (9:31) • [I saw] this recruiting commercial come on. Helicopters come over the horizon. It said, “We'll take you from high school to flight school.” So, I get in my truck and drove 150 miles to the recruiting office and joined the Navy. (15:41) • That why we started this thing, to help guys hit the pressure relief valve. (17:45) • The world's too slow. We're moving too fast on the inside, and we start trying to numb that down, and we do it in unproductive ways. • Our organization is called Hold the Reigns. We use horsemanship to teach guys how to emotionally regulate the present moment focus, and allow them to narrate their own story to us. (19:08) • Were the only organization, possibly in the nation that I know of, that's run by frogmen. (19:28) • I feel like God has created in me the way, or persona that's gonna be able to help guys. (23:23) • You can't team guy your way around horses. (26:24) • I've dealt with a lot of really dangerous horses and people made them that way. (43:18) • That's kind of a surprise thing we do – we put them in a really vulnerable situation, so you're no longer the hairy-chested, bullet-proof frogman. You're now just a little worried about your safety. (54:14) • A horse is completely honest. They do not know how to lie. A Navy SEAL, a Doctor, and an Astronaut Walk into a Bar

[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. If you have suggestions or feedback on how I can earn your paid subscription, shoot me an email: cmclymer@gmail.com. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]Tell me if you've heard this one before.A Navy SEAL, a doctor, and an astronaut walk into a bar. They're all the same guy.Last week, NASA announced that 40 year-old U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Jonathan “Jonny” Yong Kim will deploy to the International Space Station in March onboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 with cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky for eight months. It's the latest extraordinary chapter in the life of Dr. Kim, who previously served as an enlisted Navy SEAL early in the Global War on Terrorism before completing undergrad, whilst earning an officer commission, and subsequently graduating from Harvard Medical School. While finishing an internship in emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Kim applied to the NASA Astronaut Corps after meeting physician-astronaut Dr. Scott Parazynski and was selected as part of Astronaut Group 22 in 2017.Okay, so, obviously, this is an all-timer professional trajectory, so profoundly accomplished that it's hard to imagine it inspiring any degree of career jealousy in the hearts of his peers because, honestly, any reasonable adult has to ask: what caliber of human being could even do all this?If the LinkedIn summary of this man's life was all you had to go on, maybe certain assumptions would be front-of-mind. Maybe you'd think he had an especially nurturing childhood. Maybe he had particular advantages, even with hard work, that made the above possible. That's where his story, at least for me, gets even more mind-boggling.Dr. Kim was born to Korean American immigrants a few years after they arrived in the United States. They were a working class family. His father struggled with alcoholism and was abusive. His mother attempted to make the very best of a volatile home life. Neither had a college education.Growing up, Dr. Kim took on the role of a protector for his mother and younger brother, constantly shielding them from the violent outbursts of his father. In high school, this came to a head when his father, armed with a handgun, threatened to kill his mother.Rushing to his mother's aid, Dr. Kim was pepper-sprayed and bashed in the skull with a dumbbell by his father. The police were called to their home. After learning he was barricaded in the attic and likely still armed, authorities cordoned off the house. There was a standoff, shots were exchanged, and his father was killed.Despite the overwhelming trauma of this early horrific experience, Dr. Kim kept focused on his childhood dream of serving as a Navy SEAL. He enlisted in 2002 after high school graduation, eventually completed training with BUD/S Class 247, and got assigned to SEAL Team Three. He was primarily trained as a combat medic but soon completed the highly competitive SEAL Sniper Course and then deployed twice to Iraq, undertaking over a hundred combat missions and earning the Silver Star and Bronze Star (w/ valor) along the way for life-saving actions. So, you got this guy who went through an especially rough childhood but overcame it to flesh out a sterling career any of us would admire. The odds were long, yet the success has been off-the-charts. So, as a person, it wouldn't really be surprising to find out he's a bit cocky, right?I've watched several interviews with Dr. Kim and dozens of video snippets of his fellow Navy SEALs discussing the man's character and professional competence. I highly recommend the five-hour podcast chat he did with retired SEAL officer Jocko Willink.(By the way, Mr. Willink is an exceptional interviewer and does a fantastic job of guiding the conversation throughout.)There's also a standout, hilarious clip in which two of his fellow SEALs talk about a presentation Dr. Kim made during Sniper School that was so deeply impressive that all they could do was laugh when remembering it. Definitely watch it. Here's what's abundantly clear: there may not exist a greater chasm between the professional achievements of one human being and the unyielding humility and selflessness they inhabit. Dr. Kim's fellow SEALs have nothing but high praise for him in a community that is not known for its penchant to publicly acclaim any of its living brothers given all who have made the ultimate sacrifice. So many clips I've watched were SEALs bringing up Mr. Kim unprompted and in glowing terms. In watching his interview with Mr. Willink, I was quite taken with the numerous times Dr. Kim answered questions about his service in the framing of his SEAL brethren and other fellow service members, always reverting back to those lost and their sacrifices. I don't know how else to put it, but there's such a pure humility in this man that comes across as steadfastly authentic, almost appearing to be embarrassed that his accomplishments would be discussed at all. As I've done research on Dr. Kim, I've come across too many predictions to count that he may one day—and should be—president, which struck me as not only true but somehow—ironically—unlikely. It's not for his lack of ability. If Dr. Kim could understandably be described as a political novice given that his entire career has been spent outside of formal politics, it's difficult to think of any political novice more likely to be equal to the task. You get the sense that if he were thrown into the Oval Office tomorrow and without warning, Dr. Kim would find a way to make it work. Hell, you get the sense that if you told the man he needs to learn how to juggle flaming swords, he'd come back an hour later with a routine set to music. No, it's the relentless selflessness so clearly at the core of his being that might be the only factor of skepticism, particularly in a political system disinclined to reward selflessness as a prevailing characteristic. In Dr. Kim's own analysis, he's not perfect. He's made growth-ready mistakes throughout his storied career, listened to advice, made adjustments as necessary, and always focused on self-improvement and most importantly: the team, the team, and the team. While speaking with Mr. Willink, he said this: “I'm not gifted. I'm not smarter than everybody else. I'm not stronger. I just have the ability to stick to a plan and not quit."And that's a great value statement, but in honor of Labor Day, here's one that resonated even more with me:“You should never think you're too good to do a job. And I think you should be like that in everything you do. 'Be a forever new guy' is what I try to emulate… never think that you are above taking out the trash.”Well said, Sir.Jonny Kim is the kind of American who makes me hopeful about the future of our country and the kind of leader who best expresses, by example, the greatness we should all aspire to.I can't wait to see what he does next.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Dave Brown is an outstanding former Navy SEAL known for his small stature but immense determination. Standing at just 5'3", he was always underestimated, both by high school bullies and Navy recruiters, yet he remained undeterred and locked in on his goal to serve.   Despite being initially dismissed due to his size, Brown's persistence and resilience led him to pass the rigorous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, even running with two stress fractures during "Hell Week." He graduated with BUD/S Class 115 and served with Underwater Demolition Team 21 and SEAL Team 4. His deployments took him across Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.   His memoir, "And Goliath," tackles the human side of being a Navy SEAL. Especially in Brown's case, where his physical limitations seemed to doom his dreams, "And Goliath" chronicles the willpower he needed to tap into his potential for success, overcome perceived limitations, and come out at the end as an inspiration to all current, former, and aspiring special operators.   Get a copy of "And Goliath": https://andgoliathbook.com/   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-clubSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life After Addiction And Indictment

Dan Cerrillo is the former Chief Administrative Officer for American Addiction Centers (AAC), where he led ~15 teams that improve the lives of veterans struggling with addiction and PTSD. Prior to his promotion to CAO in 2022, Dan served AAC as the Chief of Staff and Chief Security Officer. In those roles, Dan was instrumental in helping AAC obtain Tricare and Veterans Administration approval, which has enabled the organization to treat 4000+ veterans and support them in returning to normal, productive lives. Dan was an original member of BUD/S Class 194 and served with SEAL Team One as an operator and instructor after graduation. He was later accepted to the Naval Special Warfare Center/ Special Operations instructor staff and received his accreditation as a Master Training Specialist for Advanced Applied Explosives, Diving Supervisor, Diving Maintenance and Range Operations Safety. A decorated Navy SEAL, Dan has been awarded the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals – all with combat distinguishing devices – as well as the Purple Heart Medal. Just before Dan was slated to transition into a civilian career in finance, after graduating with a BBA in Finance, he watched the events of 9/11 unfold. Instead of leaving the military, he chose to continue serving his country for the next six years, during which time he deployed with Naval Special Warfare Group One, SEAL Team Seven, and SEAL Team One to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Following a combat injury, Dan medically retired from the SEALs, though he continues to serve in board, advisory, and ambassador capacities for the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Navy SEAL Fund. In 2020, Dan played an instrumental role in creating the Military Wellness Initiative and Navy SEAL Support Alliance, a $30M joint endeavor of multiple strategic partners. Dan has held multiple executive protection specialist and team leader roles at Vulcan, Inc. and Bayshore Global Management which later inspired him to launch Spartan 7, Inc., a company that provides security, adventures, and executive coaching to high-net-worth individuals, families, and corporations across the US. Dan is currently the CEO of Spartan 7, Inc., and in just three years, he has taken the business from a $2500 startup to a valuable brand worth over $50M. Other work experience includes launching three CrossFit Gyms in the greater Seattle area, which were later sold for a substantial profit, and serving as the Chief of Staff and Director of recruiting for Bayshore Global Management's Global Support Division (GSD.ngo), where he created world's first privately funded disaster aid and humanitarian response team – built of staff from Harvard Humanitarian, Stanford Medicine, and former Special Operations Operators – that was deployed to 10+ natural disaster sites and 100+ humanitarian aid sites. Dan also co-founded the Memorial Day “Murph” Challenge, which has raised over $50M in donations for the Michael Murphy Family Foundation through over 1M participants to date. In addition to his BBA, Dan is finishing a Master of Science (MS) degree in Strategic Leadership from the University of Charleston. He is also a Nationally Registered Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (Level B), a credential which he obtained from the University of Utah. Dan and his wife Leilani have been married for over 20 years. They reside outside of Nashville and enjoy traveling to visit their three grown children at every opportunity. In his free time, Dan has coached multiple high school, college, and junior football teams to winning conference, state, and national championship titles. Dan is currently the Head Coach of the Sub Varsity Team, and Varsity Assistant Linebacker Coach of the Nationally Ranked (15) and defending Tennessee State Football Champions Lipscomb Academy.

When Michael Donnelly was designing the logo for his new company, he chose the image of the compass to indicate  direction, and the elephant to show loyalty, strength, memory and confidence. CBD Path is a new company providing hemp-based cannabinoid products designed to help with pain, anxiety, inflammation and sleep issues.  About Michael Donnelly Michael Donnelly is a former Navy SEAL, residing in Miami, founder of Alarm and Electronics Systems, and CBD Path. He is a board member for the Navy Seal Museum and  motivational speaker  passionate about paying it forward. Coming out of high school, Mike admits he wasn't the best student, so he mapped out a path to the military. Initially lured to become a Green Beret, he took a look at the Navy on advice of his mother. Seeing parachuting and explosives, he decided to seek to become a Navy SEAL "before being a SEAL was cool." Mike was one of 18 out of 127 candidates to graduate with BUD/S Class 173. Mike spent ten years on active duty, leaving in 1998 and serving a short period with the Navy Reserve.  Mike worked in the low voltage security alarm business in multiple roles before starting a company of his own. Today that company has multiple offices installing smart home technology across Florida and Georgia.  CBD Path Mike is truly passionate about helping the veteran community, so when cannabinoids were approved by the Federal Government, he starting researching. CBD Path was formed and now offers a variety of oils, topicals, pills, gummies and pet treats. We asked Mike to step into The Spotlight with a challenge - we were skeptical. These products still need additional research, so we dug in on the science and the positive outcomes. While there is a long path ahead, these products are generating notable results, and the success stories Mike shares are compelling.  Reach and follow CBD Path Website: https://www.thecbdpath.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thecbdpath/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecbdpath/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5fAL6Md5QDn1YlaAT9x39g A special offer for VeteranCrowd Spotlight listeners Visit the website and enter the code VETERANCROWD25 for 25% off the entire site! For 25 years, Floyd McLendon Jr. honorably served in the greatest naval military in the world. He enlisted into the United States Naval Reserve in the summer of 1992. Fourteen months later, he fully committed to Active Duty service and chose Electronics Technician (ET) “A” School to become a radar and satellite communication’s expert. After six years of naval service, Floyd contemplated his career goals and the impact he was making.  With his family, friends, and fellow Americans in mind, Floyd decided to undertake the most grueling and difficult goal of his life: becoming a U.S. Navy SEAL. There was just one problem: Floyd didn’t know how to swim. He didn’t let that stop him. After teaching himself how to swim and months of non- stop preparation, Floyd passed the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Physical Screening Test. Suffering from an internal injury that caused him to lose 30 lbs., Floyd rang the bell during his second attempt of Hell Week, voluntarily quitting.  Fifteen months later, faced with a daunting decision to follow through with his goal, Floyd remembered his motivation: service to his family, friends, and fellow Americans. He returned to BUD/S, after voluntarily quitting during Hell Week, and graduated with BUD/S Class 254, officially becoming a U.S. Navy SEAL. He spent the next 13 years at four, different Naval Special Warfare commands. He deployed five times, with presence in twenty-four countries over five continents.  Throughout Floyd’s service, he was held accountable and pushed to grow by his SEAL brothers in some of the most godforsaken war zones on the planet. He sees this same level of accountability lacking in Congress where two-faced, career politicians say one thing at home and do another in Washington. While their constituents suffer from ever-growing taxes and job-killing regulations, career politicians cozy up to special interests and pad their pockets.  Floyd sees a desperate need for new, service-minded leadership in Congress that puts Americans first and demands accountability. He will bring his service before self leadership and invaluable experience to Congress to fight for limited government, lower taxes, protecting the unborn, preserving the 2nd Amendment, and defending religious liberty.  Since retiring from naval service, Floyd has traveled the country speaking professionally and been a published author. He is steadfast in his Christian faith, a devoted husband to his wife, Melinda, and a committed father to their four children Trenton, Tanner, Ty, and Keylen.  Visit McLendonforCongress.com to learn more.

It follows the trainees around during Hell Week on a truck, taunting all that see it. Hot coffee, much needed sleep, and a warm bed are dangled before their shivering, sleep deprived, and mud caked faces. Do NOT ring the bell!

He primarily competed in track and Olympic Taekwondo, winning multiple State Titles and in 1989 won the Junior Olympics for his division and fought in the first ever Jr. World Taekwondo Championships. This earned him a chance to train in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center and his performance led many to believe he was a solid hopeful for the 1992 Olympic Games. However, in 1991 he was also the first person from his hometown to earn an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, which he accepted. Although the decision sidetracked any Olympic dream, he was focused on becoming the best combat leader he could be and after a year at the Naval Academy Prep School, he entered Annapolis and graduated with the Class of 1996. During his time at the Academy, he continued to push his limits in athletics and martial arts, and became focused on becoming a Navy SEAL Officer. Out of a class of almost 900 graduates, only 16 slots were available for SEAL training and despite making the cut from 200 initial candidates to a final 33, the competition was tight and he didn't get a slot, forcing him to temporarily pursue another path. For the next 5 years he served as a Bridge Officer on warships, persevering until finally earning a spot with BUD/S Class 239 and served as their Class Leader. After training, an injury led to cutting his career in Naval Special Warfare short and so based on a recommendation from a good friend at SEAL Team 5, he chose to tryout with Blackwater and began deploying with them for the next few years. Despite loving the work with BW he decided to apply to become a Special Agent with the FBI and was recruited by them in 2007. After the FBI Academy, he was assigned to a Counterterrorism Unit and also served on the Violent Crime/Major Offenses (VCMO) Squad on the border of Mexico. A few years later Lance decided to move on and opened Hawkstorm Academy, a small but elite MMA gym in southern Illinois. However, behind the scenes he had been developing an idea for a company that would be like Blackwater, only better...what has now become Hawkstorm Global.  Also during those years he wrote two books; one, a Science Fiction novel and the other a combat history of the U.S. Navy SEALs. Now as the Founder and CEO of Hawkstorm Global, he and his team is beginning to make waves in the Private Military arena worldwide."
