Transforming Early Childhood Education: Empowering Educators and Young Learners with Ellen Drolette

Inspiring Impacts

Who's Inspiring Impacts today? Ellen Drolette! Ellen Drolette is an appreciative educator and expert on early childhood education. Tune in as Ellen speaks with host Dr. Lindsey Godwin about the transformative impacts Appreciative Inquiry has on the mindsets and behaviors of early childhood teachers and students. Ellen breaks down how Appreciative Inquiry can help educators reframe and change negative behaviors and perspectives, from kids' biting habits to the dread you feel about Mondays. She emphasizes the power of using AI to dismantle and avoid negative self-fulfilling prophecies and even improve your interactions with co-teachers and parents. Ellen Drolette is a certified Appreciative Inquiry practitioner and has found innovative ways to work AI into the practices of early childhood education. She earned her certificate at Champlain College under the direction of Dr. Lindsey Godwin. Ellen brings nearly 30 years of experience to the early childhood field. Her enthusiasm and passion for working with young children and families are as enormous as her passion for working with early childhood teachers, directors, mentors, administrators, and the entire team of early childhood educators. Ellen's first book, Overcoming Teacher Burnout in Early Childhood: Strategies for Change, was published in 2018 by Redleaf Press and focuses on how early childhood professionals can battle burnout and low morale in the workplace. Episode Highlights: How Appreciative Inquiry guides her through difficult moments as an educator. Ways to integrate Appreciative Inquiry in early childhood education + examples of AI questions to ask young students. How to use Appreciative Inquiry at parent-teacher conferences. Understanding, reframing, and correcting children's behaviors, like biting, with Appreciative Inquiry. How to stop dreading Mondays. How to work more effectively with your co-teacher. Resources Mentioned: National Association for the Education of Young Children: https://www.naeyc.org The Joy of Appreciative Living by Jacqueline Bascobert Kelm: https://appreciativeliving.com/the-joy-of-appreciative-living Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dwek: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1400062756/sociapsychn0f-20  Research on Growth Mindset: https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/ A summary of Barbara Fredrickson's Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions: https://positivepsychology.com/broaden-build-theory/  Summary of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and the Pygmalion Effect: https://www.simplypsychology.org/self-fulfilling-prophecy.html Inspiring Quotes: “Once you learn about Appreciative Inquiry, you can implement it so deeply in all of the different places of your life.” “I realized in that moment, it had nothing to do with the children. It had everything to do with me and my attitude and how I was showing up for that day… That really was very impactful for me.” “If you know your co-teacher's not a morning person, don't try to engage with them in the morning, but also, recognizing what is going well with that teacher… that can go a long way... when you say that you appreciate the way someone did something, it's so powerful.” What is Appreciative Inquiry? Appreciative Inquiry, sometimes referred to as “the other AI”, is one of the best kept secrets behind meaningful and lasting change at organizations. The AI approach is strength-based, meaning it focuses on identifying and leveraging successes to solve problems, rather than focusing on trying to fix individual failures. We're revisiting our How to Thrive series co-hosted with positive psychotherapist Marie McLeod for Mental Health Month. This series first went to air in late 2021 - almost 12 months ago - while How to Thrive, the documentary, was still in production. It is now out in the world and showing in cinemas all over the country. "When we feel a moment of hope, pride, love, serenity, gratitude, inspiration... we actually open up and quite literally. We broaden our peripheral vision and expand our brain." In the 6th episode of our new weekly podcast series "How To Thrive," co-hosts Marie and Ellen explore the fifth "beam" of the BEACON model: Optimism. To recap, the first four beams are: Belonging, Engagement, Accountability, and Compassion. They are discussed in detail in the past 4 episodes of season 11. In each episode, Marie and Ellen talk about the science behind each beam and key you in on how each of these can help you thrive as they share practical applications and real-life experiences. In this exquisitely optimistic episode, Ellen and Marie talk about: How emotions impact our brain and therefore our behaviour Are some people more wired towards optimism than others? How we can rewire our brains for a more positive disposition How our brain is hardwired to broaden, build, and perform better with positive emotions The neurological benefits of optimism and why is it important to notice the moments that give us a jolt of joy Practical tips to increase your positive vs negative emotions ratio Your quest for this week: Create a "joy jar" by putting in a list of things that can help uplift your mood. You can enlist the help of your family, friends, or co-workers in this quest. The more ideas there are, the more opportunities there are to experience and share positive moments. Curiosity is a powerful element of joy. There are two key constructs related to curiosity that we'll dive into in this episode because they are particularly powerful. These are intellectual humility and uncertainty tolerance. You can practice skills to build these constructs in your life, both of which not only build a more resilient brain and body, but enhance your joy and a deeper sense of connection with others. We'll talk about some obstacles that might stand in the way of these constructs along with five simple strategies to start building them in your daily life. The Invisible Gorilla Study: Take just a few minutes for this study before you listen to the episode (or pause the episode when prompted). Everything you need to know is in the 1:21 video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo. Simply count how many times the players wearing white pass the basketball.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: Intellectual humility describes the recognition that you might be wrong about the things you believe in. Building more intellectual humility is powerful. Individuals who score higher on intellectual humility also: Report improvements in wellbeing. Score higher on self-awareness assessments and are more tolerant of other perspectives. Are less likely to get fooled by misinformation. Are more likely to seek out opportunities to learn. In effect, intellectually humble folks actually tend to know more compared to folks who score lower on intellectual humility assessments. Uncertainty tolerance is the ability to tolerate (or not tolerate) uncertainty. There's a full spectrum within there. Two key pieces of uncertainty tolerance are places where we can skill-build: Increasing the amount of uncertainty we can handle How we react when we hit that limit and work to reduce the uncertainty Uncertainty tolerance, followed by coming to a healthy resolution of that uncertainty, is really good for your brain (and your stress resiliency!). Five simple strategies can be used to boost intellectual humility and uncertainty tolerance: Practice admitting you're wrong, at least once per day. Even if it's just to yourself (which can be a great place to start). Challenge your perceptions. Or, put another way, don't believe everything you think. Don't google every question. Sit with uncertainty and even try to explore answers to your question offline. Exercise. Exercise increases curiosity. Try heading outside for a walk for an even bigger boost. Act like a scientist. Try something new. Observe what happens. Apply what you learn. Bonus (but essential) strategy: Be gentle with yourself. We grow not through self-improvement, but from self-acceptance.   LINKS AND SOURCES MENTIONED: Join us at the Joy Lab Program Dr. Else Frenkel-Brunswik Dr. Barbara Fredrickson (Broaden and Build Theory and the Upward Spiral Theory) Your work reputation stays solid when you admit you're wrong More on the Invisible Gorilla Study (and Drs. During this episode Coaching Through Stories, host Dr. Eric Bean coaches us on how to effectively manage and eventually overcome a paralyzing pattern of behavior most people have: fear. Discover how you can look at fear from a totally different perspective—something that can lead to growth and joy rather than a feeling that’s triggered by danger, pain, or threats.   Episode Highlights: People are much more comfortable choosing the familiar over the unknown.  While fear is one of the seven universal emotions, it manifests behaviorally and psychologically in several different ways. Managing fear is a learned response. Generally, without the gift of experience, managing emotions comes down to space. It is necessary to create space in between the stimulus that’s creating the fear so you can choose your response. Developing the ability to create the space and measure and create your response is critical to high performance and will take some work. To change your relationship with fear, you need to get clarity on what you’re truly reacting to. The biggest fear of all is the idea that you can’t handle it. Part of changing your relationship with fear is shifting your mindset from one of threat to one of opportunity. Before you face your fears, examine them. Instead of focusing on the worst case scenario, ask yourself what the best case scenario is. In this episode, we talk about how negative and positive emotions each serve a purpose in our life. We briefly touch on what role negative emotions play and then shift our focus to how we can pursue more positive emotions to transform us into happier and healthier people! While negative emotions are important to help us survive (example: Flight or Flight response), they do narrow our focus and limit our ability to think creatively. Negative emotions can also cause physical stress and worry, which can weigh heavy on our mind and body. On the other hand, positive emotions broaden our focus. They expand our thoughts, increase our creativity, and help us find solutions. Jamie and Jules reference the Broaden and Build Theory of Positive Emotions, as well as, the Transforming Effect of Positive Emotion (an analogy used was the Domino Effect) by Barbara Frederickson. You will hear examples from research and real-life experiences that you can relate to and apply in your life right now! Welcome to Episode 45. Nearly four months after the UK - where I live - went into lockdown due to Covid-19, and as last week more businesses, such as hairdressers and pubs, have been allowed to re-open and plans for the full re-opening of schools in September were announced, my levels of fear are higher than ever.  Higher, even, than when a global pandemic was declared and I realised this was serious. As more people resume their previous routines with some semblance of normality, I feel less in control of my own and my family’s safety on the rare occasions we need to venture into public enclosed spaces, such as shops and pharmacies, for essentials.  This fear, I know, is not something I am unique in experiencing, though everyone experiences it uniquely and at different levels. Fear is a powerful emotion.  It is one of the six basic emotions identified by Ekman in 1999 (1). It is an essential emotion as, without it, we would struggle to stay alive. We need fear to alert us to danger and elicit the so-called ‘fight or flight’ response. It can also, quite commonly, cause a ‘freeze’ response, where we are incapable of doing anything. I am not a virologist or epidemiologist, so I am not going to dispense advice or opinion in this podcast on what we should each be doing with regard to Covid-19.  This is also not the place for political debate.  I would like to, however, share some of the ways you can deal with your own levels of fear so it does not become debilitating to the point where you cannot do your job or look after yourself or your loved ones.  One way or another, we need to be able to continue to function, despite the current situation, despite the fear.  This is something I’ve been working at increasingly hard for some time now and perhaps you have, too.  I’d like to offer you some positive psychology tools to help, for you and your children, so you can not only continue to function, but thrive and flourish, despite the fear. In episodes 25 and 26 I mentioned the work of Barbara Fredrickson on positive emotions (2). According to her ‘broaden and build theory of positive emotions’, if we experience more positive than negative emotions, we can experience improved relationships, perceive and grab more opportunities, achieve more success in our personal and professional lives, and have more fun. We can experience ‘upward spirals of positive emotions’, where as a result of experiencing the ‘broaden and build’ benefits of positive emotions, we experience even more positive emotions, leading to more benefits, and so on.  Fear, of course, can be a positive emotion - think about the thrill of a fairground ride or a gripping thriller, for example (though of course those are not enjoyable thrills for everyone!). But in the context I started this episode with, of the global pandemic we are living with, for those of us that experience fear, we are experiencing it as a negative emotion. Positive psychology does not advocate eliminating negative emotions.  All emotions are valid and serve a purpose. But we can improve our lives by not letting those emotions take over and generating more positive emotions for ourselves to counteract the effects of those negative emotions. All of the interventions and activities I have mentioned in past episodes do this to some extent. Last week, I suggested self-kindness bingo, for example, as a way to do activities you enjoy for 30 days.  Last year, in episode 9, I shared the importance of gratitude for wellbeing. In other episodes we have explored savouring, curiosity, and a whole host of other wellbeing activities. So my message in this episode is a simple one: Explore wellbeing activities that will boost your positive emotions. Make a list of as many of these as possible that you can do within whatever level of risk you are prepared to take and is allowed where you live with current restrictions in place. And ensure you do as many of these activities every day, every week, as possible.  These won’t make the fear go away, but they will reduce the impact of the fear on your wellbeing by bombarding you with feel-good hormones and allowing you to experience all the benefits Barbara Fredrickson talks about. ------------------------- If you have found this episode useful, please give it a five star rating on iTunes to help it reach more people and please spread the word. Welcome to episode 26 - I can’t believe we’ve been enjoying this weekly rendez-vous for exactly half a year already! Thank you for going on this journey with me.  Talking of journeys… I have just come back from Paris, where I spent two days teaching on the Positive Education module of the Anglia Ruskin University Masters’ in Applied Positive Psychology - the same Masters’ I graduated from last year and the same module I took as a student exactly two years ago.  The experience was surreal, awesome and - honestly - initially absolutely terrifying.  I loved being back in Paris, and although I was there for work, I wanted to make sure I could make the most of the experience, and that’s what today’s episode is about.  Although it was definitely hard work to teach at a level I hadn’t taught or trained at before, it was also an honour and a delight to teach a group of students that were very experienced and knowledgeable in Positive Education. I wanted to focus my attention on the experience itself and enjoy it as much as possible, which I did.  And I wanted to enjoy the beauty of Paris, a city I love, of the French language, which I grew up with and love, and of the mouth-wateringly delicious food I know I can always find in Paris. According to an article by Dr Davis in Psychology Today, “savoring just means that we attempt to fully feel, enjoy, and extend our positive experiences” and is “a great way to develop a long-lasting stream of positive thoughts and emotions”.  According to research by Dr Barbara Fredrickson(1), maximising our experience of positive emotions is important as these trigger “upward spirals” in wellbeing. So how do you go about triggering those positive emotions and increasing your wellbeing through savouring? One way to do it is by taking time to savour your food.  So often, when we are busy with work and life in general, we eat our meals without really thinking about the food, without taking the time to truly notice its tastes and textures, perhaps watching TV at the same time, or answering messages on our phones, or talking to colleagues about work-related matters.  We may even simply be mentally distracted by our busy minds.  Taking the time to savour a meal from time to time is a form of mindfulness.  One day this week, set out to do something different: For one of your meals, choose a food you haven’t eaten before and want to explore, or choose to eat one of your favourite foods.  Set some time aside for that meal and when you sit down with your food in front of you, before you start eating, look at the food.  Observe its colours, its smell, perhaps the way the steam rises off it if the food is hot.  Take in every visual and sensory detail before you start eating.  Then, with each mouthful, focus on its taste, texture and temperature.  Notice how these change as you chew, how each mouthful feels as you swallow it.  Notice how your hunger gradually reduces and how it feels to gradually be satiated.  After you have finished eating, reflect on the experience and how you feel in that moment - whether you feel comfortable, are still hungry or feel over-full, whether you feel energised or tired, and any other thoughts and feelings that may come up. You can extend this activity by photographing your food, as this allows you to reminisce about the experience later.  In fact, you can use this form of mindfulness through photography for all sorts of activities.  You can capture beautiful moments by stopping to take notice, snapping a photo and later reminiscing over those moments you preserved.  "Moules et Frites" in a Parisian Brasserie   View from the rooftop of the Galeries Lafayette   According to research (2), being able to savour and enjoy positive emotions derived from positive experiences improves wellbeing.  Additionally, savouring has been shown to protect against depression, even reducing the likelihood of negative events causing depression (3). Reminiscing and mindful photography have also been shown to improve mood (4,5). I hope you’ll give savouring a go, and of course this is a simple activity you can encourage your students to do, too.  If you try it, get in touch and let me know what impact this has on you or your students.  As always, I look forward to catching up with you next week and, until we speak again, For Flourishing’s Sake, have a great week! Efektem jej badań jest teoria poszerzania umysłu i budowy zasobów osobistych (The Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions).

The goal of this episode is to affirm our ability to “cultivate inspiration”, by looking at what inspires us and what inspire others. This episode #69 and the lesson plan are dedicated to Jeppe de Lange. The word “Inspiration” has its roots in the Latin word inspiratus – meaning to Breathe into – to inspire. What can we do to help us breathe into a crisis?  Exhale, (which we teach in Response) helps us breathe into a crisis. The Exhale creates a pause in action and can redirect our thoughts from one of panic to clarity and reason. The Pause and Exhale is done while asking “Am I safe?” This action encourages the intervener to take in the scene at hand and to also role model a calm, compassionate, and professional demeanor. The use of an Exhale can help motivate, encourage, and influence others – it is a form of Intentional Role Modeling. What is Intentional Role Modeling” Consciously acting in a manner that displays a specific behavior or action. Intention can be both benevolent and malicious, today we are working on benevolent Intentional Role Modeling. Benevolent acts can inspire us and others, making Intentional Role Modeling also Inspirational Role Modeling. Intentional Role Modeling with benevolence as the lead role modeled”. Inspiration is feeling engaged, uplifted, and motivated by someone or something you witnessed.   Positive Emotions help us build upon our engagement in daily life. At a baseline level, they motivate us to get up each morning and participate in life. Inspiration at its highest level, can be transformational. The “Broaden and Build Theory” was developed by Barbara Fredrickson’s in the late 1990’s and is commonly referred to in Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is “the scientific study of what makes life most worth living.   Learn more about the Response Curriculum at http://www.responsetrainings.com

On today’s episode of Trend Following Radio Michael Covel interviews Barbara Fredrickson. Barbara is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology, and the Principal Investigator of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab at the University of North Carolina. She is a social psychologist that conducts research in emotions and positive psychology. Her main work is related to her Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions which suggests that positive emotions lead to novel, expansive or exploratory behavior, and that over time these actions lead to meaningful long term resources such as knowledge and social relationships. The podcast starts with Michael asking, “When did this fascination start with you?” Barbara explains that she has had a curiosity with emotional behavior all her life, but it was in college when she realized that almost all research was centered around negative emotions. She began being influenced by evolutionary science, neurosciences, and behavioral changes that occur with emotions. She sees her job as figuring out why positive emotions matter, and why they are important. All emotions have specific action tendencies whether negative or positive. She believes that positive emotions broaden our horizons and negative emotions have values that are much more narrow and specific. Positive emotions bring awareness. They help us become better versions of ourselves. Barbara goes on to explain that it’s not the intensity of positive emotions that are important, it’s the frequency. They are like waves, they arrive and then dissipate. Positive emotions don’t typically have as powerful of moments as negative emotions and that is why Barbara believes they have eluded the interest of scientists for so long.Michael then brings up Barbara’s work with “the undoing effect.” Barbara expands on this hypothesis by saying, “It first started when other scientists looked at the physiological signature of emotions.” The undoing effect counters the current notion that negative emotions have a signature and positive ones do not. The study showed that positive emotions actually act as reset buttons to your negative emotions. Lastly, Barbara helps listeners look at love through the lens of an emotions scientist. She explains that when we share positive emotions with multiple people it is more effective than when we experience that same emotion individually. She also points out that love is made up of micro moments of positive experiences rather than long lasting ongoing experiences. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Inner-experiences and well being The undoing effect Positive negative ratio The body’s definition of love Depression The idea of soul mates Emotional connections
