Often, we're too targeted on a particular demographic and we really have to open that up.” — Crystal D'Cunha   “Seventy percent of diverse organizations are … better able to capture new markets. And so, when you're more diverse, you can grow your business easily [and] you're better decision-makers as a diverse group.” — Crystal D'Cunha   “It's so exciting when businesses embrace other cultures. You just want to do business [with them] by default … whether you need the product or service or not … because you recognize that they're making an effort.” — Crystal D'Cunha   “Diversity is being invited [to the dance] but inclusion is actually being asked to dance.” — Crystal D'Cunha   “Sometimes we don't have the service set up. What happens if something goes wrong? I always say, ‘WTW; What happens when things go wrong?' … That's what we need to plan for in terms of service delivery. This week on the #PrettyAwkward Entrepreneur Podcast, I'm chatting with Simone Mcnish who is a business and diversity coach. We are diving into the struggles and lessons that Simone experienced when she decided to pivot her business into diversity and visibility coaching.   Some topics Simone and I will be dividing into include: Simone shares her story on how she started in the online space and eventually entered the coaching world.   There's no need to stress ourselves when it comes to pivoting our business, the only thing that matters is your own calling and your truth.   Being your unapologetic self means showing up authentically and confidently. That's the magic formula to become successful in your business.   The goals that you desire for your business will come to fruition the moment you set your mind to it.   It can get soooo difficult for women to take up space and be visible in the online world. But taking that next level step and owning that confidence is an integral part of your business. Manifest your unapologetic, confident self and you're truly gonna dominate the coaching industry.   So be sure to tune in to episode 65 and listen in on Simone's journey and her lessons on how to integrate diversity and visibility into your business' strategy.   As always, stay safe, stay healthy and stay #PrettyAwkward!   If you have enjoyed this episode of the podcast, take a screenshot, head on over to Instagram and share it your IG stories and tag me, @meganyelaney @prettyawkwardentrepreneur Join the Client Attraction Academy Waitlist Now!    CONNECT WITH MEGAN: Website Instagram Facebook The #prettyawkward Female Entrepreneurs Create Impactful Passive Income

In this episode, speaker, author and international business leader, Margaret Heffernan, talks about her book, “Woman on Top”. She gives a few reasons why some women were able to start a business and achieve more with less. Then, she gives her opinion about gender equality in the corporate world. She explains why past diversity campaigns failed and what can be done to change the mindset of leaders about this issue. She shares her experience meeting Ted Childs, a diversity champion who is working with IBM and a few other companies. Next, Margaret gives us a quick glimpse of her TEDx book, “Beyond Measure” – where she teaches how companies can make little steps to create big changes in their culture. Lastly, she explains how her mindset was changed when networking with different kinds of people. She shares how treating others well eventually led to many of her successes. Plus, Margaret talks about her book, “Willful Blindness” and explains why we turn our heads away from the facts that may hurt ourselves or the ones we love.   In this episode, you'll learn: • Why do women start their own businesses. • The things corporations can do to change their culture and make it more gender neutral. • The value of building alliances when you have very little to begin with. Tweetables: • I'm not sure anybody can be gender neutral. I think we are all biased in favor of people like ourselves. • The less you have, the more you do for others. • If you don't have access to institutional power, then you become very good at having access to social power. • Many of the changes in the workplace that women want and had worked for hugely benefit men. Big Takeaways: • Diversity programs will continue to fail unless we realize that this is a business case; it's not about social justice, fairness or discrimination. • Building allegiance with other minorities will help diversity initiatives move forward and reach their respective objectives. • For people to collaborate, organization need to encourage a high level of trust, generosity and reciprocity – behaviors which sociologists describe as having high levels of social capital. In 2009, the University of Chicago held the first symposium dedicated to creating opportunities for minority- and women-owned professional service firms. The Professional Services Symposium is a first-of-its-kind program within higher education and is a departure from traditional supplier diversity efforts, which tend to focus primarily on construction and janitorial services. The annual symposium brings prominent minority- and women-owned business leaders from around the country together to network and build sustainable relationships with senior leadership at the University. More than 200 firms have participated in the two-day event, which includes a networking reception and a chance to interact one-on-one with vice presidents and their teams during 45-minute business presentations. Since the symposium’s inception, more than 60 firms have secured business relationships with the University, representing the fields of money management, communications, legal services, human resources, information technology, and architecture. The success of the symposium speaks to the University’s commitment to cultivating the most talented portfolio of business partners and our belief that the best ideas come from having diverse viewpoints at the table.

More than 100 firms have participated in the two-day event, which includes a networking reception and a chance to interact one-on-one with vice presidents and their teams during 45-minute business presentations. Impact Since the symposium’s inception, more than 30 firms have secured business relationships with the University, representing the fields of money management, communications, legal services, human resources, information technology, and architecture. The success of the symposium, now in its fifth year, speaks to the University’s commitment to cultivating the most talented portfolio of business partners and our belief that the best ideas come from having diverse viewpoints at the table.
