Fannie Porter was one of the most iconic madames during the times of the Wild Wild West. She started working as a sex working at 15 years old. By the age of 20 she was already widowed and owned her own brothel in San Antonio, Texas. She right in the middle of the "Sporting District," which was actually a red light district. Her brothel was known to host all of the bad boys, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, plus the whole Wild Bunch. She served as somewhat of a headquarters for the outlaws and ended up kind of being a matchmaker for them. Of course, she catered to the lawmen as well. She ran a respectful hideout and was known for how secretive she was about the clientele and what she may have known about their plans, actions, and whereabouts. A listeners recommendation this week, as Trev and Rob discuss classic Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the titular roles as the moralistic thieves from the old west, pursued into hiding in Bolivia.Written by William Goldman, with lavish cinematography from Conrad Hall, and directed by George Roy Hill, this movie has gone down in history as one of the most influential and respected movies of all time, and Trev had never seen it before! Maggie didn't have to do too much convincing for Ian to agree to 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Between some snappy writing, crisp editing, and spot-on performances, Butch Cassidy shines.

Despite its signature bombast, THE KILLER doesn’t actually reinvent many of the tropes of action cinema. There’s plenty of gunpowder, gore, and squibs to be found in its 110-minute runtime. What makes it different – and what keeps it feeling fresh more than 30 years later – is how it uses those tropes to service a subversive story. Pitting hitman Ah Jong against Detective Li Ying and tossing an innocent blind woman into the mix, THE KILLER builds tension not through highlighting the differences between the cop and the criminal, but by reveling in their compatibility. Once both characters realize the senselessness of their cat-and-mouse relationship (foist on them by the bureaucracies that would betray them), each finds himself in the other’s stories and motivations. If it sounds a little gay, that’s because it’s pretty gay. The smash hit western BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID probably could have been the basis of a pretty good TV show, but that's not what we got with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KIDS! It's a Hanna-Barbera animated TV series about a teen band that solves mysteries for a talent agent supercomputer with dog allergies. It's one of the most non sequitur shows in Hanna-Barbera history (and that's saying something), but was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Robert Redford says that his starring role in David Lowery’s new THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN will be his final film performance, and if that turns out to be the case, it is in many ways an ideal bookend to Redford’s breakout role in the classic 1969 Western BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. In this second half of our Redford pairing, we talk over the many echoes between OLD MAN and BUTCH CASSIDY, from their respective views on a life of crime and methods of robbery, to how each treats their central cad’s trusting love interest. David Lowery’s new THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN draws purposely and purposefully on the legacy of Robert Redford, which makes it a perfect bookend to Redford’s star-making turn in George Roy Hill’s elegiac 1969 blockbuster BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. In this first half of our Redford double feature, we dive into that earlier film’s legacy, considering its place in the Western tradition, its quirky yet widely appealing tone, and the complimentary but very different performances of Redford and his co-star, Paul Newman. Plus, some feedback on our recent episodes on MALCOLM X and BLACKKKLANSMAN.
