Hip-hop, a genre and culture that originated in the South Bronx in the 1970s, has evolved into a global phenomenon with a profound impact on music, art, fashion, and society. Emerging from the socio-economic struggles of African American and Latino communities, hip-hop was born as a form of creative expression and a means of addressing social issues. Over the years, it has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry, shaping popular culture and influencing generations across the globe. The Birth of Hip-Hop: 1970s – Birth of the Four Elements: Pioneering Artists and Visionaries: Kool Herc (DJ Kool Herc): Credited with hosting the first hip-hop party in 1973, Herc's DJing techniques laid the groundwork for turntablism. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five: Known for their socially conscious lyrics, their song “The Message” (1982) addressed urban issues, becoming a pivotal moment in hip-hop. Afrika Bambaataa: A key figure in hip-hop's early years, Bambaataa helped shape the genre and promoted peace and unity through hip-hop culture. Run-DMC: In the 1980s, they elevated hip-hop's mainstream appeal, blending rap with rock elements and creating iconic tracks like “Walk This Way.” Public Enemy: Known for politically charged lyrics, Public Enemy's “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” (1988) is a landmark album in hip-hop. N.W.A: The group, especially with their controversial album “Straight Outta Compton” (1988), brought West Coast hip-hop to the forefront. Crucial Moments in Hip-Hop History: 1973: Kool Herc's first hip-hop party in the Bronx. 1979: The Sugarhill Gang releases “Rapper's Delight,” one of the first commercially successful rap singles. 1984: Hip-hop's first commercial success, Run-DMC's self-titled album. 1988: N.W.A's “Straight Outta Compton” and Public Enemy's “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” released, influencing political and social commentary in hip-hop. 1990s: The Golden Era of Hip-Hop, marked by diverse styles, iconic albums, and global recognition. 1996: Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.'s deaths, marking a tragic turn in hip-hop history. 2000s-Present: Hip-hop becomes a dominant force in global music, with artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West, and Drake achieving international acclaim. Hip-Hop's Global Impact: Economic Power: The hip-hop industry generates billions of dollars annually through music sales, concerts, merchandise, and endorsements. Cultural Influence: Hip-hop has shaped fashion, language, and artistic expression worldwide, becoming a powerful force in mainstream culture. Social Commentary: From addressing racial inequality to critiquing societal issues, hip-hop serves as a platform for artists to voice their perspectives and advocate for change. Diversity and Evolution: Hip-hop has diversified into various sub-genres (trap, drill, conscious rap), reflecting its ability to adapt and evolve with changing times. Globalization: Hip-hop has transcended cultural boundaries, with artists from diverse backgrounds contributing to the genre's growth and global appeal. Conclusion: From its humble origins in the Bronx to its current status as a global cultural force, hip-hop's journey is a testament to its resilience, creativity, and ability to connect with people on a profound level. It has not only provided a voice for marginalized communities but has also become a dynamic and influential art form that continues to shape the world in countless ways. This is it - the final episode of series 4, New York City 1975-76. For this show Jeremy and Tim are staying in the Bronx for more discussion around the links between Downtown party culture and the port hip-hop scene. We hear about the very first B Boys, what their moves looked like, and what sort of music they were breaking to. We explore how important performing or being watched was to these dancers, and the similarities and differences with losing yourself on a disco dance floor. Tim and Jeremy unpack the class dimension of the early breaking scene, set against a backdrop of poverty and rising gang membership. They profile Africa Bambaataa, both as a DJ and an agent for social cohesion, and also introduce a young Grandmaster Flash - more on him to follow. Plus - Jeremy shares his own breaking experiences… We will take a short break (no pun intended) for summer, and will be back in the autumn for Series 5. Thanks to everyone for your continued support as we reach our 60th main episode of the podcast, closing in on 100 hours of music, dance floors, sound systems and counterculture. In this episode, Part 2 of “Crate Boys,” we hear the conclusion of the story of Afrika Bambaataa, a founding father of hip-hop who stands accused by several men of molesting them when they were teenagers.  Bambaataa remains a shadowy figure while more allegations surface, Ron “Bee-Stinger” Savage receives more threats, Dave is threatened by a top Zulu Nation official, and a Zulu Nation soldier is mysteriously murdered shortly after speaking out about the scandal. Despite the mounting evidence, the case is nearly closed forever, until a last-minute court filing by a new victim gives hope to those seeking justice.

In this episode, Part 1 of “Crate Boys,” Dave and Casey tell the story of how one of hip-hop's founding fathers, Afrika Bambaataa, built a rap empire that changed the world and gave him god-like status, which alleged victims say he wielded to groom young boys for sex – all with the protection of his powerful legion of followers in the Zulu Nation. The story of Bambaataa, drawn from Dave's groundbreaking work on the case for VICE, is littered with corruption, sexual abuse, exploitation, violence and even murder. This episode contains graphic and vulgar language that may be disturbing.

In a new lawsuit, a man alleges that Bambaataa abused and trafficked him since the age of 12. Afrika Bambaataa has been sued by a man who mentioned that the hip-hop pioneer abused and sex trafficked him from 1991 to 1995, beginning when the accuser was 12 years old, according to court documents viewed by The Lionel B Show. Bambaataa was around 33 or 34 years old at the beginning of the period in question. The lawsuit was filed in New York State Supreme Court on August 4th on behalf of a plaintiff identified as John Doe. The plaintiff lives in the Bronx and filed the lawsuit under the state's 2019 Child Victims Act also known as CVA, which opened up a limited time window for adults to sue over childhood sexual abuse regardless of when it allegedly occurred. According to the lawsuit, Doe was “repeatedly sexually abused and sex trafficked” by Bambaataa at the Bronx River Houses public housing project, where they both lived. The victim and his lawyers claim that Bambaataa “eventually began to inappropriately touch [Doe] in his private areas while [Doe] was in [Bambaataa's apartment].” They also allege Bambaataa “eventually encouraged [Doe] to watch pornographic videos while in [Bambaataa]'s apartment,” which “progressed to mutual masturbation…and sodomy.” Additionally, they allege that Doe “became a victim of sex trafficking as [Bambaataa] would transport [Doe] to other locations and offer [him] for sex to other adult men. During said encounters [Bambaataa] would watch as [Doe] was

Leila Wills joins the Fringe this week to discuss the allegations of child molestation brought against one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop music , Africa Bambaataa. Leila's film, "TRAPped in a CULTure" breaks down the allegations and the Myth around the persona that is Bambaataa. We also discuss KRS - One's defense of Bambaata and similar allegations waged against R Kelly.  Movie notes below. Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse A year before the MeToo Movement took off, another story broke that shook the foundation of hip-hop. One of hip-hop’s founding fathers was accused of being a pedophile. Shocking allegations of child molestation against Afrika Bambaataa surfaced in 2016 when several men came forward with claims that Bambaataa and others from his organization, the Zulu Nation, had sexually abused them. The age of consent in New York is 17 and the men claim they were all underage, several were as young as twelve and thirteen.  One victim in the film says he was nine years old when Bambaataa allegedly began grooming him.   Afrika Bambaataa is regarded as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop and his 1980s single, Planet Rock, is the most sampled song in hip-hop history. Once a grassroots craze in the poverty-stricken streets of the Bronx, hip-hop spread worldwide and has grown into a billion-dollar industry. With the media’s new interest in hip-hop’s origins, Bambaataa has enjoyed many honors including appearances in films, books, magazines, and even as a visiting scholar at college universities.   His organization, the Zulu Nation, is considered to be The First Family of Hip Hop and has boasted of celebrity membership for decades. Members reportedly include Ice T, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and more.    Bambaataa would later take on the title "The Amen Ra" (God) of hip-hop and the Zulu Nation transformed from a hip-hop awareness group to a quasi-religious organization. Additionally, the self-proclaimed prophet of hip-hop, KRS One, declared that "anyone who has a problem with Afrika Bambaataa should quit hip-hop."    Bambaataa denied the child sexual abuse allegations and the hip-hop community as a whole fell silent on the issue.

Southern California singer/songwriter Alice Wallace’s new album, Into the Blue, to be released this week on Rebelle Road Records, is pure California country. Her fourth album, it harks back to the 70’s artists like Joni and Jackson Brown who did not have all the answers but knew how to sing the questions.  Folky, romantic, soulful, and always melodic, Alice is eclectic Americana, organic, probing but understanding and often topical. Winner of an LA MUSIC CRITIC Award, Alice has performed at LA’s legendary country venue the Palomino Club,  as well as many others in her average 200-gigs year. The album marks her debut on the brand-new Rebelle Road label, an imprint founded by a trio of women dedicated to strengthening the California Country music community and expanding visibility for female artists in the Americana/roots genre. Screamin’ Rachael – Rachael Cain --  named the “Queen of House Music” by Billboard Magazine,  was the first house artist to sign a major label deal. She launched the Hip House sound when she recorded Fun with Bad Boys with Afrika Bambaataa and has collaborated with  artists including Bambaataa, Marshall Jefferson, Colonel Abrams, Grandmaster Melle Mel.  An early signer to and now President of Trax Records, Rachael returns to her strong Chicago alternative roots with Don’t Make Me Lonely  while working on the production with Van Christie of Die Warzau.  She released a new single I Am House,  and celebrated the release of the soundtrack to new film series, The Vamp Bikers Trilogy, which Cain coordinated and appears on and which includes the original “Boom Boom” from TRAX, source of friction with Kayne West for his sampling.

In Spring 2016, hip-hop culture pioneer, Afrika Bambaataa, was publicly accused by two men of having sexually molested them when they were minors. This cast a new light on the true nature one of the founding fathers of hip-hop culture, and the organisation he fronted, the Universal Zulu Nation. Despite the seriousness of the allegations - now backed up by many others from Bambaataa’s past - both mainstream and specialist media have largely ignored the story.Chicago-based journalist and researcher Leila Wills guests on this episode to discuss her new documentary, ‘Trapped In A Culture: Child Molestation In Hip-Hop,’ which examines the claims against Bambaataa in detail, including interviews with his accusers and former Zulu Nation members. We discuss the ambiguity surrounding Bambaataa’s early days in The Bronx, and many aspects of his life story which appear to have been falsified. We also scrutinise the true nature of the Universal Zulu Nation, which many former members have described as being run more as a quasi-religious cult than as a social movement. Bambaataa appears to have incorporated aspects of various secret societies and occult mystery schools into his symbolism and doctrines. In particular, we examine the disturbing parallels to Dr. Malachi Z York’s Nuwaubian movement/ cult. York, who appears to have been a mentor to Bambaataa, is serving a 135-year jail sentence on child sexual abuse charges. KRS One, who had initially spoken up in defence of Bambaataa, comes in for his own scrutiny too, as many previously-accepted myths and legends about some of hip-hop’s key figures come to be reassessed. Is there more to know about how this whole scene really got started?Leila expects to release her documentary shortly, but is still in need of funding to finalise things, having self-financed the whole project so far. DJ Red Alert is a member of the hip hop culture that is known for bringing the music to the people. He began his career as part of the Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation and earned the reputation as a top notch DJ. At one point in the early 80's, Red Alert's equipment was stolen. Once he was able to get at new setup Bambaataa and other members of the Nation were moving to clubs in Manhattan. Red Alert continued to draw a following in Harlem.Red Alert channeled his energies and musical talent into two daily shows on the nations #1 radio station, New York's WQHT HOT 97.1 FM.He has received numerous awards and accolades including a special award at the first annual Rap Hall of Fame Awards show. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from IMPACT music trade publication for 1998 and the 1997 Mix Show DJ of the year award from GAVIN. In addition DJ Red Alert was named one of the 50 most influential people in music by Rolling Stone magazine. Red Alert is also featured in an exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The only DJ of this era so honored! He has appeared in over 50 music videos.Red was reared by his maternal grandparents, who were from Antiqua. Red's love for those around-the-way basketball games led him to his high school team at DeWitt Clinton. No doubt this is where he was dubbed the nickname, “RED”; for his red hair and alert response on the court. Red later received a college basketball scholarship. During the last of his high school years, Red hung out at the Saturday night parties thrown by Kool Herc and Coke La Rock at clubs throughout the west Bronx. Red studied the style of music Kool Herc played and the way he blended the vinyl. On Fridays, Red found himself venturing downtown to check out star disco deejays, such as: Grandmaster Flash, Together Brothers, and Pete DJ Jones. It wasn't long before he was jammin' at parties on his own equipment. It was important to be up on what was happening on the New York scene, so Red was now attending legendary parties throughout the Bronx.Red caught Grandmaster Flash at the Back Door and the Dixie Club, Kool DJ A.J. at the Morehouse Center and Afrika Bambaataa at JHS 123. By this time, Red had gathered enough record selection and record spinning insight to teach his cousin DJ Jazzy Jay the basics of the art. Jazzy Jay in turn introduced Red to Bambaataa. Bambaataa taught Red about rock, reggae and new wave music. Learning about the various styles of dance oriented music, Red soon became the deejay for Bambaaata and his Zulu Nation, joining the likes of Afrika Islam, the Soul Sonic Force, Grandmixer DST and the Rock Steady Crew. Through this association, Red began to spin records downtown at such clubs as Negril and Danceteria. While deejaying at the Roxy, he met Barry Mayo, then program director of NY's WRKS 98.7 KISS FM. A man of considerable taste, Mayo hired Red to inaugurate the “Dance Mix Party.” Red remained at 98.7 KISS FM for 11 years, becoming the top DJ at the station. During his tenure at KISS, Red became the first individual to popularize dancehall music at a major radio station! Before you knew it, Red met up with producer Vincent Davis, of the Vintertainment Record label, through DJ Chuck Chillout, to produce Red's First record, “Hip Hop On Wax, Volume 2.” (Part 1 was made by DJ Chuck Chillout of the B-Boys and Part 3 was by DJ Born Supreme Allah).Another record was “He's My DJ (DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk)” which featured Sparky D on vocals and was released on NIA records produced by Spyder D.He also became a member of the Boogie Down Productions, touring the country with KRS One.Since then, Red has done super mixes for compilation albums on Next Plateau Records and Epic Records. Now a seasoned veteran as radio jock, club jock and studio man, Kool DJ Red Alert has established his place as one of the world's premier DJ's. To top it off Red Alert owns a production and management company, Red Alert Productions (RAP). The company garnered a reputation for developing and promoting new talent. RED is responsible for launching the career of such widely acclaimed acts as the Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep and Queen Latifah to name a few.In addition DJ Red Alert was the first to introduce numerous hit records including “Soul II Soul” by Jazzy B and “Hold On” by the group En Vogue!Red says, “You have to learn how to break a new artist on record by working it in and out with familiar records. People are scared to fall. It's OK to fall. You must learn how to fall and be strong so you can come back. A DJ is like the pied piper.”Since his break on the radio, Red Alert has had the opportunity to expand hip hop's audience as well as break the careers of Boogie Down Productions, Black Sheep, the Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest. He has had cameos on countless albums, and has also released various compilation albums.Lately he has undergone some professional changes after leaving his radio show. Well all wait to see what he has in store for us next. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Texterna ger blodsmak i munnen. Working on Ghost Ship is one of the most concurrently challenging and rewarding jobs I have the privilege to take on every year. The work lasts 9 months from initial planning to final thank you cards. In the midst of the focus put in to being a producer of the event, I have also to be aware of the responsibility of actually playing at this event. With upwards of FIFTY DJ's on the bill, representing the city's finest crews, one certainly wants to give their best effort. The fact that thousands attend an annual event that has no real "headliners" also allows the San Francisco underground to truly shine at Ghost Ship. Thus, all of my friends and colleagues from our local scene plan their sets for months and everyone brings their "A" Game. And to me, the pressure to impress these peers is far more palpable than any audience expectations one could imagine. "How you did" at Ghost Ship carries on in people's minds for a long time around here. This year, we added some additional firepower in the persons of our longtime heroes James Lavelle (Unkle) and Afrika Bambaataa. And since I was scheduled to follow Bambaataa, one might think that the pressure was turned up a notch or two even higher.  But contrary to that expectation (and my own), I hit the stage feeling nothing but relaxed and positive. I had closed for some stars before, including Metallica, P-Funk, and even Bambaataa on several occasions previously, which helped. But what really helped was the incredible energy in the room from people who were completely blissed-out by the wonder of the event. That I had some part to do with its successful execution filled me with a lot of pride and joy.  All of the worries, private fears, and pressure of the build faded away into a sea of smiles.  For the set, you may notice that I consciously tried to bridge the gap between Bambaataa's legacy in hip hop and electro, that of the event's heavy breakbeat traditions, and the Halloween spirit. I also worked hard to make sure that UNKLE was represented in the set with their legendary DJ Shadow/Roots Manuva "GDMFSOB". This was also, strangely, the first set I had played in many months that was not a "theme set"… like the "All Radiohead", "All Talking Heads", "All Motown" sets I had found myself doing so often. This creative freedom just meant that I could have as much fun as I wanted to, play what I thought best fit the moment, and watch the room bug out. And bug out it did. Batshit crazy they were. Rarely have I received such positive feedback from a DJ set. Believe me, even after 20 years behind the decks, true gratitude does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. So thank you to the Bay Area community, all the people who worked on Ghost Ship Halloween, and also to my favorite podcast the RIPECAST for recording and putting out these sets. - MoPo For more information on Motion Potion visit: www.motionpotion.com Artwork by www.jempanufnik.com

A teenager grew up in the Bronx in the 70's when violence, drugs, and poverty were rampant. He was swept up in the gang lifestyle until he went on life-changing trip to Africa for winning an essay contest. He adopted a new name, Afrika Bambaataa, and devoted himself to encouraging peace and positivity through hip hop music and culture. Nearly forty years later, his enormous record collection was briefly on public display in an "Open Archive" before landing in the Cornell University Hip Hop collection. Learn more about Bambaataa's influence on hip hop culture and the open archiving process in this week's show.

Zulu nation celebrates its 26th anniversary this week, me and zulu nation... weíre both scorpios, nearly the same age. Bronx in 1981... what the f**k was goin on here..?!?!?A subculture that redefined world culture .. imploded in the poorest parts of New York city.. heres a lil peek into the wierd world of this scene..WHBI, NEWARK, 105.?.....Afrika Islam is known as the son of Bambaataa, not for real but he followed the legacy and he held it down on the air in Newark radio at 1 am wednesday nights.. (where this mix is from).. its rough cut from cassette tape -  eclectic unknown breaks, funk, electronic, rock music chopped together .. like a random symphony for kids of hi energy.. its almost spooky to hear just the bare essentials of what we mastered as producers today.. breakbeats, sparse vocals, or horns or guitars chopped in and out.. this is what we deal with today but back then kids just made it all live with a lot of random records they studied.Islam was a staple party dj in early 80ís in nyc.. one of the dudes to really cross over with the down town scene and still stay street and shout out all the gangs in harlem and brooklyn.. he then went on to produce most of Ice Tís first record in LA. then like most zulu dudes had to like move to germany when hip hop went crazy with puffy and stuff.. The first time I heard ìits just begunì by jimmy castor was at a warehouse in Tennessee when i was like 15. These kids would bring boomboxes and breakdance on the marble floor. It was the second wave of hip hop culture that went through the midwest mostly on  freight trains covered in spray paint, and raves... but we had as much passion as the first b boys.. just mad late- actually I think by then early nineties like Germans and Lithuanians were winning all the breakdance contests anyway.. but that whole s**t changed my life. When i heard the Jimmy castor song and saw kids dancing to it i thought it really did mean something... like the revolution was about to begin.maybe it did. I started painting on the trailors parked on the 2 lane highway by house when the were building mattress barns and new Shoneyís diners..  I know now how wack mini malls are, But white trailors, trains, mud and fences at night was like all i day dreamed about in the day besides this girl that worked at the donut shop..  so maybe I was part of a revolution? If you want to read up on ZULUDavey D pretty much broke it down herehttp://www.daveyd.com/zulunationhistory.html...its pretty mindblowing how big this s**t is and what it really means..i mean damn,to say ì if people  focused energy on creativity instead of crimeî sounds like something Nancy Reagan would say... but thats exactly what happened and it turned out to redefine the world.. I always say that i do what i do cause of bambaataa and ZULU.. but its really true.
