What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2024 36:36

There are two distinct eras of music by The Doobie Brothers.  From their formation in 1970 until 1975, Tom Johnston was the lead vocalist, and the group had a mainstream rock sound, with some folk and “California Country” influences.  Starting in 1975, Michael McDonald joined the group as a keyboardist, as well as providing lead vocal work to help Johnston, who was having health problems at the time.  Over the following years, Johnston would have less influence as he neared retirement from the group in 1977.  Michael McDonald would influence the group into a more soulful sound, often called “blue eyed soul.”  Today we would call this “yacht rock.”Minute By Minute, the eighth studio album from the group, comes from the height of the McDonald era.  It is a high water mark for the Doobie Brothers both commercially and critically.  The album would spend 87 weeks on the Billboard 200 album charts in the U.S., topping the charts in five of those weeks.  It would also produce multiple nominations and wins at the Grammy awards in 1980 including Record and Song of the Year wins for “What a Fool Believes.”The Doobie Brothers would break up in 1982, then reform with Johnston back as front man in 1987.  Michael McDonald would rejoin the band full time in 2019 in time for their 50th anniversary tour. You can still find them on tour today.Rob brings us this soulful album for today's podcast. What A Fool BelievesThe lyrics of this hit narrate the story of a man who meets an old crush and tries to rekindle their relationship, only to find out that there never really was a relationship in the first place.  Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote this single, which became a number 1 hit in the US and Canada.Dependin' On YouMichael McDonald and Patrick Simmons wrote this song, and Simmons takes over lead singer duties.  It went to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Latin-infused call-and-response song celebrates a rock solid love that is always there.Don't Stop to Watch the WheelsThis shuffle beat deeper cut is sung by Patrick Simmons, and was the B-side from the single release of “What a Fool Believes.” “Look out, hold on, don't stop to watch the wheels go 'round.  Look out, hold on, I got to cover ground.”Minute By MinuteThe title track finds Michael McDonald handling lead vocals, and was written by McDonald and Lester Abrams.  The single was released in April of 1979, and it went to number 14 on the US charts.  The smooth keyboard-driven sound reflects the  Motown inspiration, and is a hallmark song of the “yacht rock” genre. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Every Which Way But Loose by Eddie Rabbitt (from the motion picture “Every Which Way But Loose”)Clint Eastwood would take a break from his action and western movies for this comedy with an orangutan co-star named Clyde. STAFF PICKS:Don't Stop Me Now by Queen Bruce leads off this week's staff picks with a single from Queen's "Jazz" album.  While this tribute to hedonism did well in the UK, it only hit number 86 on the US charts.  It would grow in popularity over time, and would be featured in multiple commercials including Toyota, L'Oréal, and American Idol.Double Vision by ForeignerLynch features a song from Foreigner's second album of the same name.  It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Surprisingly, the inspiration for the song title was an event at a hockey game when a goalie had to be removed after a collision on the ice because he was experiencing double vision.Homicide by 999 Wayne brings us a band from London that is named for the number used in the UK to reach emergency services.  This punk-infused song takes a tongue-in-cheek look at serial killers.  While a top 40 hit in the UK, it didn't chart in the States.  You might recognize this song from the soundtrack to the John Wick series, “The Continental.”Follow You Follow Me by Genesis Rob closes out the staff picks with a softer song from the progressive group Genesis, the closer from their album “...And Then There Were Three...”  The group had condensed to the three members of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, after former member Steve Hackett chose to leave.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Steamer Lane Breakdown by The Doobie BrothersWe get a little double dip of the Doobies as we exit today's podcast on this instrumental number.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

In this episode, we go down a Rabbitt hole and discuss one of the early songwriting efforts of the man who ruled the musical world of 1980 - Eddie Rabbitt! In 1966, his tune "Ball and Chain" (co-penned by Tricia Carr, who we also talk about) was released as a single by Scottish freakbeat merchants The Anteeeks (1:30). Yes, the spelling is correct, as is the band's use of fuzz. The song has a great riff and a great bridge, but is it enough to win this week's Bo Diddley Award? The Scottish diaspora is strong, so one month after the Anteeeks released their version, Canada's Great Scots gave the song a go (38:43). The laddies in kilts really kill it - the singer sounds like  cross between Mark Lindsay and Johnny Rivers, and the tune has a real Raiders-like vibe. It's Solid Gold!

It was released in 1982 as the first single from Rabbit's eighth studio album. “ You.and I became a major country pop crossover hit for both artists. What a beautiful duet. We need more love songs like that today. EddIe Rabbit and Crystal Gayle sound beautiful together. They made a classic song. A song for lovers. The Killjoys - Naïve (1977) Featuring Kevin Rowland, later to be the lead singer of Dexys Midnight Runners who had a huge worldwide hit with "Come On Eileen".  Normally I'd frown on such trend-hopping (this was just the first of many image reinventions to come) but when lightning strikes, it strikes. But it almost never strikes twice in pop music. And it didn't for him.  The Monkees - Head Radio Promo (1968) This is hilarious! Hearing Annette Funicello and a few members of the cast waxing about these "crazy" Monkees. Not The Monkees themselves, mind you. By the way, one of the shortest soundtrack albums I've ever seen. Each side clocks in at about 14 minutes with some incidental dialog.  The Dave Clark Five - Last Train To Clarksville (1971?)  Dave Clark had been approached (according to an interview I read from 1967) for the group to do the TV show which became The Monkees. But he turned it down because he did not see his band acting on screen the way the four actors who formed the 'made for TV band' called The Monkees would be asked to do. This particular recording appears on an out-of-print collection called "Unreleased Tracks", as were the other DC5 tracks on this show.  กุง กาดิน (Gunga Din) - ฉันจะร้องเพลง I Shall Sing) (196?)  Alice Swoboda - Potter's Field (1972) B-side of her second single. We thank Frank for his time spent with us. Frank's Bio: Frank J Myers is from Dayton, Ohio. He moved to Nashville in 1981. Frank got his start in Nashville as band leader, road manager and lead guitarist for Eddy Raven in 1981 and worked with Eddy for nine years. It was with Eddy that Frank started writing, playing and co-producing sessions. They had two number ones, five number twos and three top tens. Songs such as “I Got Mexico,” “Bayou Boys,” “You Should've Been Gone By Now,” “Sometimes A Lady” and many others. It was in 1982 though, that Frank had his first single (a song he wrote by himself) with “You and I” for Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle which stayed number one: four weeks country, number two for six weeks AC and number six for four weeks Pop. It was during his time with Eddy Raven that Frank met Gary Baker. They had their first number one together in 1993 with “Once Upon A Lifetime” by Alabama. Gary and Frank recorded one album for MCG/Curb Records as Baker & Myers and were three time nominees for Duo Of The Year at the ACM's and CMA's. Their greatest accomplishment as writers together came when John Michael Montgomery recorded “I Swear” which was number one for four weeks on the Country charts. The song was then recorded by All 4 One and went to number one on the pop charts and stayed there for 11 weeks. Since then, “I Swear” has won many awards, including: American Songwriter Magazine Pop, AC, R&B, Country and Overall Song of the year. #532 - Jenny Yates Jenny Yates is a special guest on The Paul Leslie Hour. Jenny Yates is an undeniable artist. An incomparable singer who is a pleasure to listen to and a magnificent songwriter. She's sung, performed and recorded her own music. Her album "Out of the Blue" has been well received. Yates is an award-winning hit songwriter. Many are aware of the hit song Garth Brooks recorded, "Standing Outside the Fire," which he wrote with her. Yates has co-written more than a dozen songs with Brooks, but has also written with such luminaries as the late Andrew Gold as well as blues artist Keb 'Mo,' and the legendary Janis Ian. Many in the country music world recorded songs written or co-written by Jenny Yates: Kathy Mattea, Sammy Kershaw, Dan Seals, Gary Morris, Pam Tillis, Wynnona, Moe Bandy, Eddie Rabbitt and others. This interview is in-depth and will hopefully not be the only exchange with this super talent. We're also treated to some solo acoustic / vocal performances with Jenny Yates. She's right here on The Paul Leslie Hour and you're invited to listen. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Episode 3 is one of our favorites so far. We sit down with the President and CEO of Clearwing Productions, Gregg Brunclik and the President of Apollo Productions and former Clearwing employee Jamieson Filip for an “All Crew” special. We discuss the humble beginnings of Gregg’s company and how Eddie Rabbitt played a big part in it. We also talk about the transition in concert production from the 70’s and 80’s when everyone was building their own cabinets to the present day systems and some of the in between. Jamieson discusses the things it takes to produce large events including drilling through 10 feet of concrete at the Superbowl and a huge electrical debacle at the 2010 Winter Olympics. We talk about some classic road pranks from back in the day, and how the “touring brotherhood” has evolved. Gregg tells us about the time he provided production for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Violent Femmes at the north pole. It’s capped off by Gregg’s first hand account (from behind the monitor desk) of the infamous Plasmatics show in Milwaukee where Wendy O’Williams was arrested spurring a years long legal battle between her and Milwaukee Police Chief Harold Brier. Take a ride on the Crew Bus this month and hear the real deal stories from the people who always tell it like it is.

From his beginnings with Sonny and Cher to his Grammy-winning Toto work, to Randy Travis, David has never been removed from the A-list of bassists because of his ability to provide the right groove for the right music. He left the LA scene for all the right reasons, and along the way built a network of premier accounts in Nashville that just won’t stop calling such as Toby Keith, April Barrows, Brooks & Dunn, Neil Diamond, Manhattan Transfer, Reba, Eddie Rabbitt, Linda Ronstadt, Boz Scaggs and Kenny Rogers. We welcome David Hungate to Inside MusiCast.
