Destination On The Left
413. Thinking Differently, with Andy Clinton

Destination On The Left

On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Andy Clinton, CEO of Visit York County. He discusses why youth sports tourism is so important to his community and how reaching out to other successful destinations for inspiration has helped them build their visitor numbers. Andy also shares the details of the innovative strategies that Visit York County uses to grow traffic to their website, increasing it from 500,000 to over 2 million page views annually. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why youth sports tourism is crucial for York County and how the community leverages its local assets to attract major events How Visit York County collaborates with local partners like the Chamber of Commerce and economic development organizations to enhance overall community marketing Why short-form videos and digestible blogs are vital for engagement and how they have transformed their digital presence Andy's approach to benchmarking and reaching out to other successful destinations for inspiration and best practices How Visit York County uses geolocation data to provide unique insights to local businesses Youth Sports Tourism One of the central themes Andy discussed was the burgeoning field of youth sports tourism. York County's various state-of-the-art sports facilities, including a nine-court basketball facility and softball complexes, position it as a prime location for national and international sports events. With events like the Adidas 3SSB basketball circuit and the NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regionals, the county has been able to attract substantial hotel bookings. Andy stressed the impact of accessibility on their success, particularly the convenience offered by the nearby Charlotte Douglas International Airport. This airport's proximity allows for easy travel, attracting teams and visitors nationwide. Focusing on Collaborations Andy shares how Visit York County collaborates with the York County Chamber of Commerce and the county's economic development department to build united marketing efforts. Their partnership ensures that they present a cohesive message that promotes the county as a tourist destination and a vibrant community with ample business opportunities. We also discuss how Visit York County uses geolocation data to provide unique insights to local businesses. By analyzing mobile location data, they can report detailed information about their customer base to restaurant and brewery owners, such as the percentage of visitors from outside the county and the number of different states that customers are coming from. This approach allows stakeholders to see the tangible benefits of tourism and understand its significant impact on their businesses. Getting Visible Online A huge part of York County's strategy has been continuously boosting its digital presence. Visit York County's website has had an impressive transformation over the past few years, resulting in an impressive increase in traffic from 500,000 to over 2 million page views annually. The key to this impressive growth is in creating engaging short-form video content, great imagery, and digestible blogs. Topics like “Top Five Places to Pick Strawberries” and “Where to Find Santa in York County” have driven traffic and engaged tourists and local residents. A preliminary report has been released detailing what caused a plane to land without front landing gear at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport last month. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary findings Tuesday.  The report states a fractured upper lock link, a mechanism of the landing gear system, prevented the nose landing gear from functioning properly. Delta Air Lines flight 1092, a Boeing 7171-200 aircraft, was en route to Charlotte from Atlanta on June 28 when the plane was forced to land without the nose gear. None of the 104 passengers or flight crew were hurt during the landing, which was captured on video by multiple passengers. Medic confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The outer loop opened around 2:45 p.m., significantly earlier than some estimates expected. At one point, DriveNC.gov estimated the road would be closed until 5:30 p.m.  It was one of multiple separate crashes on I-485 in that area Tuesday. In total, the project would have more than 40 total tennis courts and an amphitheater for outdoor concerts and a pickleball venue. Beemok Capital, the firm behind the proposal, also considered several sites from the complex, including Eastland Yards, but ultimately landed on the River District due to its proximity to Charlotte Douglas International Airport and a larger plot of land.READ MORE: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/charlotte-north-carolina-tennis-complex-professional-stadium-river-district-mecklenburg-county/275-adce2d66-70b5-47aa-8303-3a1b2a9802c0

While staying at Minute Suites, Brian gives his review of the place while on the road to give a speech in Alabama. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly1NhfIZ_As Transcription Minute Suites review. Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. Coming to you today from the Charlotte International Airport in North Carolina. I'm sitting here in a rocking chair the airport's covered with these things where you could just sit down on a rocking chair, which is nice. I want to talk about the MinutesSuites, and I'll just take a quick minute to talk about it. Especially long layover here, so I had to stop over and I just could not find a place on the ground where I can get any shut-eye. So these places called minute suites are these little rooms that you can rent. That of course, they're airport pricing, so it's gonna be quite a bit higher than anywhere else you'd rent for something even close to similar if you could find anything out there in the real world. But I found this and it was worth it just to test it out because I've never done them before. So it was an interesting experience. Relatively you know, I mean, it's very clean and everything else that there's a whole lot that is unexplained. I wasn't there was like a Bluetooth speaker and there I wasn't quite sure how to get it working or what have you. There was a just the TV wasn't all that self-explanatory. I'm pretty good with those types of things. So it didn't take me much but and it's just not all that well explained, I wish they would have done a better job at trying to upsell me to a shower because that's an option there that they didn't say much about. So it's unique, it's something I'd like to see more in America is the ability to just have a quick place where you can snooze open Airport, you know, Asia and so forth are filled with these pods where you can, you can just buy a bed, and then I don't know how they charge those. This is charged in like 15-minute increments after a certain amount and they kind of limited their daily amount is eight hours. So if you get close to that you might as well just get the full eight hours. So interesting experience. Would I recommend it? I don't know I probably recommend a regular hotel if you're going to be in for a really long stay. But if you just need just a few winks, it might be worth it for you. So go check out many mended suites. It's only in certain airports. This Airport has two of them. I stayed at the one at the atrium. So that's all I got for today, you have a great night. We'll be back tomorrow. Go check out my book. Excuse me, a little tired here. 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. You can grab yourself a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com. We'll be back tomorrow. Is the matter of renaming streets worth considering during the pandemic?  In 2017, Charlotte and North Carolina became the epicenter of American politics with the controversial House Bill 2. When the bill was repealed, a section in the law barred local governments from enacting or amending non-discrimination ordinances regulating private businesses until Dec. 1, 2020. Now that the ban has expired, will Charlotte look to pass another non-discrimination ordinance? If so, how can they keep the city's desires from becoming another disaster that leads to state intervention?  The Silver Line light rail extension has been the talk of Charlotte transportation plans for years. The proposal would create a new rail line from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Matthews on the southeast end of Independence Boulevard. But how would it be paid for? Larken and Tariq discuss the city's options and where they could go to find the money for the huge project.

Earnhardt’s role with NBCUniversal will allow him a wide range of opportunities in the company’s media businesses, including movies, television, podcasts, and other areas.Through the end of his full-time career, Earnhardt amassed 26 career victories, including the 2004 and 2014 Daytona 500s. His 26 victories tie him for 29th on NASCAR’s all-time race winners list. He also has 13 pole positions and eight non-points wins (five in the Daytona 500 qualifying Duel, two in the Clash and one All-Star Race victory). Even though he was sidelined for the second half of the 2016 season with a concussion, Earnhardt still managed to find success, scoring a victory in his preseason Daytona 500 qualifying Duel and earning four runner-up finishes through the first 18 races. Overall, Earnhardt has qualified for the NASCAR playoffs eight times (2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).Earnhardt is the only third-generation NASCAR champion, achieved when he won the 1998 and 1999 NASCAR Xfinity Series titles. He follows his legendary father Dale Earnhardt Sr., a seven-time Cup champion and winner of 76 races, and his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, the 1956 NASCAR Sportsman champion. In October 2009, Earnhardt Sr. was selected as a posthumous inductee in the inaugural 2010 class for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. In 2007, Ralph Earnhardt was inducted posthumously into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. Both his father and grandfather were selected among NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers of all time in 1999. The three Earnhardts combine for 10 NASCAR championships. Until 2008, Earnhardt Jr.’s career as a full-time driver was solely within the confines of the family-owned business, Dale Earnhardt Inc., where he accumulated 39 victories in the Xfinity and Cup Series from 1998-2007. But the 2008 season marked one of significant change, as Earnhardt made the boldest decision of his young career by signing with NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Rick Hendrick to drive the No. 88 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.Earnhardt’s role as a team owner and businessman continues to enjoy its own ascent separate from his driving career. JR Motorsports employs more than 140 people and fields four full-time entries in the Xfinity Series, in addition to two late model stock cars competing regionally in the Southeast. From its inception in 2006, JR Motorsports has scored 40 Xfinity Series wins. Chase Elliott earned the company’s first Xfinity Series championship in 2014 with teammate Regan Smith completing a one-two sweep of the top spots in the driver standings. Josh Berry secured track championship honors for the JRM late model program racing at Motor Mile Speedway (2012) and Hickory Motor Speedway (2014). William Byron added a second Xfinity Series title to the team's stable in 2017.Earnhardt’s first turn at ownership began with Chance 2, a team started in 2002 and jointly operated with Dale Earnhardt Inc. With that team, Earnhardt was co-owner of the 2004 and 2005 Xfinity Series championship teams with driver Martin Truex Jr.Fans and media selected Earnhardt as one of the top-three Xfinity Series drivers of all-time in a 2006 NASCAR poll. Earnhardt’s 24 victories rank him tied for 10th on the all-time series wins list. His two championships, in 1998 and 1999, introduced him to the NASCAR history books, and his accomplishments throughout the ensuing decade reinforced his place. On July 2, 2010, Earnhardt scored a popular victory at Daytona International Speedway in a throwback blue-and-yellow No. 3 Chevrolet made famous by his father in the mid-1980s. It was Earnhardt’s sixth Xfinity Series victory at Daytona, which ranks second all-time behind Tony Stewart and Earnhardt Sr. with seven each. On April 23, 2016, Earnhardt Jr. scored his most recent Xfinity Series victory, and his first in a JRM entry, at Richmond International Raceway. With crossover appeal that stretches beyond his accomplishments as an athlete in NASCAR, Earnhardt continues to garner media attention worldwide. He has appeared on more than 150 magazine covers and has been featured in high-profile publications such as Maxim, Rolling Stone, GQ, Men’s Journal, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Men’s Fitness and TV Guide. In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked Earnhardt seventh overall on its list of “Most Influential Athletes.” In January 2013, BusinessWeek magazine named Earnhardt to its top 100 most influential people in sports. The Charlotte Observer listed him sixth among the top-25 most influential in NASCAR in 2014. In July 2014, Harris Poll rated Earnhardt tied for fifth in its “America’s Favorite Sports Star” rankings, and rated him tied for eighth in the category in September 2015, marking his 11th appearance in the top 10. In May 2016, ESPN ranked Earnhardt as the most famous auto racing driver in the world. Earnhardt tops all NASCAR and IndyCar drivers on MVPindex’s 2016 social media power rankings. He has a following of more than 5.2 million across his three main social media platforms – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.Earnhardt’s business sense extends beyond the track. In 2006, he started Hammerhead Entertainment, a one-stop-shop production company that produces shows for multiple national television networks. In April 2008, Earnhardt extended his entrepreneurship into the Charlotte, North Carolina, entertainment scene, as he opened Whisky River, an uptown bar and nightclub located in the EpiCentre. In May 2015, Whisky River expanded to include a location at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Earnhardt launched “Dirty Mo Radio,” a podcast network, in February 2013, which features race recaps as well as behind-the-scenes insight from Earnhardt, team members, family members and others. The free podcasts can be found on dalejr.com and other outlets such as iTunes, SoundCloud and Stitcher.

Strange ‘rotating disc' caught on video by driver stuck in NC traffic. Is it a UFO? Link: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article237082509.html Eleven UFO sightings were logged by experts last month in North Carolina, but it's an even dozen if you include a lesser known report made near Shelby, about 50 miles west of Charlotte. That potential sighting came to light after a video appeared on YouTube, showing a disc-like object that remained stationary over Cleveland County for several minutes before vanishing, according to a witness. The video was recorded in morning rush hour on Oct. 25 and posted with a request that viewers give ideas on what it might have been, including the possibility it was just a reflection or strange play of light. Aaron Bostic, 33, told McClatchy news group that he was stuck in traffic on U.S. 74 in Shelby when he spotted the “diamond shaped object glowing really brightly” against a cloudy sky. It appeared to be rotating, he said. “It really stuck out like a sore thumb and I kept thinking that maybe it was a plane landing at Charlotte Douglas (International) Airport or maybe it was a really big stunt drone, but it stayed in the same spot for two minutes,” he told McClatchy. “Honestly, I don't know what it was and nobody at work who has seen the video knows what it was,” he added. “I'm not a believer in that kind of stuff, but we've had all this come out about UFOs and the military. You sort of have to question what you believe.” Possible explanations posted by viewers on YouTube have included a weather balloon or ball lightning, which National Geographic describes as “glowing, electric orbs” that appear as floating spheres during thunderstorms. “Can't really tell if its a Goodyear type blimp or one of those silvery cigar-shaped UFOs,” Molly Lenore posted on YouTube. Bostic says he considered that it was a helicopter but saw no flashing lights, and says it didn't have the right contours to be a blimp. In September, a video of strange lights seen off North Carolina's Outer Banks got international attention — and denials from the military that the lights were linked to training or other operations. William Guy posted a 31-second video Sept. 28 on YouTube, showing what appears to be 14 glowing orbs over the water.
