Tune in to this quarterly episode to hear from Chirag Shah of the American Hotel & Lodging Association to get the state of the hospitality industry. As EVP, Federal and Political Affairs & Counsel, Chirag, gives immense insight into challenges, patterns, and trends impacting the hotel industry and how the AHLA is helping hoteliers overcome the economic environment. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of the Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree. As you can see, we are here with another industry check-in with AHLA. And we have a first time guest with us Chirag Shah, Executive Vice President, Federal and Political Affairs & Council at the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Chirag, thank you so much for joining me on the Suite Spot today. Chirag Shah: Absolutely. Thanks Ryan. Appreciate you having me. Ryan Embree: Well, welcome to the Suite Spot. This is your first time. Before we get rolling, talk about some of the topics that AHLA and issues that AHLA is obviously advocating so ferociously for hotels all around the country. Maybe give us a little bit of background, your journey to AHLA and give our Suite Spot audience, just a brief glimpse of the role that you do there. Chirag Shah: I appreciate it. So I've been in the lodging industry, lobbying on behalf of hotels and hoteliers for about a decade and some change, 12-13 years. And previously my background is actually as a campaign and elections attorney. It's what my training is, and not perhaps a skill that folks are, a ton of folks are always looking for especially when you get relatives that want help getting outta a speeding ticket or something. But I spent time on Capitol Hill, worked on a number of political campaigns, and 2012, 2013 after finishing up my last campaign, got a call from a group. They were looking to open a DC office. And when I was on Capitol Hill, I used to meet with them quite frequently, and it was a group called AAHOA And, uh, they were looking to, to open their DC office. And it was great because I, uh, literally spoke the language that many hoteliers speak and, and figuratively spoke the language, of Washington DC. And so, uh, it, it was a, it was a great fit. And I came in and opened their DC shop and worked there for, for eight years. And, uh, then came over to AHLA and has been fantastic to represent a lot of the same people physically, actually the same people, but also the industry. It's such a wonderful industry where hotels, everybody loves going to hotels. Most public officials don't fully understand what the hotel industry is all about, but they love talking about their travel experiences. And so now at AHLA, I get to oversee the federal affairs shop, the political shop where we meet with members of Congress, have got one of the greatest jobs where we tell the story of the lodging industry to members of Congress, their staff, the presidential administration, every single day. And so getting time to understand what the challenges are that hotel leaders are facing, where the industry is going, what the economic footprint is, that's what we do. And so it's been a lot of fun. Ryan Embree: You know it's funny, Chirag, we have so many industry leaders on this podcast, and we talk to them about their kind of beginnings and they talk about maybe jumping from brand to brand and still having that tight-knit family. Because it all comes back to hospitality. It seems like a very similar path with you and the associations, right, starting with the AAHOA and then transitioning to AHLA. But at the very end of the day, it's all about hospitality and the hotels that you're advocating for from those small, independent hotels all the way up to the major brands. And here we are at the Q1, beginning of, 2025. Great time to reflect on,

As the new technology proliferates, the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for A.I. discusses how — or even whether — it should be controlled. Artificial intelligence is everywhere. Companies are already exploring the many uses of AI and a number of tools are widely available for public use. We're seeing the benefits in the business world, from simple to revolutionary, but at the same time a host of critiques. For this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, we dive into the technological phenomenon with Oren Etzioni, founding CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, who spoke at the Crosscut Ideas Festival in May 2023. Etzioni tells interviewer Chirag Shah, from the University of Washington's School of Information and Computer Science, that he doesn't want to rush sweeping new regulations, but says companies should adhere to current laws and regulators should focus on the enforcement of potential violations. The bigger concern here, according to Etzioni, is what still needs to be done to prevent this kind of technology from getting into the hands of bad actors. To some degree, he says, it already is. This conversation was recorded on May 6, 2023. --- Credits Host: Paris Jackson Producer: Seth Halleran Event producers: Jake Newman, Anne O'Dowd Engineers: Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph --- If you would like to support Crosscut, go to crosscut.com/membership. Welcome to another exciting episode! In this edition, Dale engages in a captivating conversation with Michael Lepage & Chirag Shah, discussing the fascinating realm of planning, both in its current state and its future trajectory. While Val sadly couldn't be present, the discussion with Michael provides a wealth of insights on the disruptive nature of technology in the industry and the essential competencies required to thrive in this space. The conversation is further enriched by Chirag Shah, although some technical difficulties impacted the clarity of his microphone. Nevertheless, valuable snippets of Chirag's thoughts on recruitment, necessary skills for the present and future, and more can still be gleaned. As always, Michael shares his unique perspective on the current state of planning, particularly from his perspectives from North America to the UK. The profound impact of technology, particularly AI, on the planning profession is thoroughly explored. The privilege of meeting Michael face-to-face in person is gratefully acknowledged, and the absence of Val, as usual, is lamented. On the latest Stories in AI episode, I sit down with Chirag Shah, a professor at the University of Washington and Co-Director of RAISE (Responsible AI Systems and Experiences). As someone who has tremendous experience in both the research and industry side of AI advancement, Chirag provides us with an extremely unique perspective on the current market. We talked about the negative consequences that come with increasingly powerful AI tools and how to solve them. Chirag's Bio: "I am a Professor at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. My research interests include search and recommender systems specifically focused on task-based applications, conversation AI, user experience, multi-objective optimization, and cold start problems. While I apply various Data Science and Machine Learning techniques to make systems "smart", I also care about reducing biases and increasing fairness in search/recommendation and in general in ML/AI systems. I primarily teach in Information Science and Data Science programs - at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I also work closely with industrial research labs on cutting-edge problems, typically as a visiting researcher. The most recent engagements included Spotify (2018), Amazon (2019), Microsoft Research AI (2020), and Getty Images (2021). Some of the problems I have worked on recently include zero-intent and zero-query recommendations (cold start problems), marketplace fairness, and task/journey/mission-based ranking and recommendation. A few of these have led to solutions, features, and products that now affect hundreds of millions of customers in dozens of markets." Entrepreneurs have a unique way of looking at the world. They identify gaps that need to be solved, and develop solutions so strong they create a brand new competitive advantage. This is even more true of ‘serial entrepreneurs,' because they have perfected the ability to spot the opportunities to revolutionize how we live and work. In 2021, Art of Procurement collaborated with BT Sourced, the procurement services group of BT, to produce a hybrid in-person and virtual event called Dare to Discover: Reaching New Heights for Procurement. This episode of the podcast is one of two panel sessions recorded at that event - the other recorded session will be published soon. The panel was brought together to discuss (and debate!) some of the ‘big bets' that have been made to spur procurement innovation. Charlie Clark founded Rosslyn Data Technologies and Darkbeam, Ulf Zetterberg founded Seal Software and Time is Ltd.; and Chirag Shah founded MarketMaker4 and is now Executive Chairman at Simfoni. Towards the end of the discussion, they pulled Adam Brown, Head of the Procurement Digital Garage at BT Sourced, up out of the audience to add in his perspective. During this one-hour session, Moderator Philip Ideson asks the guests: About at least one big bet they are willing to make about the future of procurement innovation and the personal perspective or philosophy underpinning that bet The difference between enabling technology and infrastructure technology in terms of ROI and in what level of engagement is asked of users and beneficiaries The responsibility that employees and employers now have to protect corporate assets against the risks of the digital economy

Chirag Shah, CEO, Nucleus Commercial FinanceWhile the most visible impact of open banking has been in the retail banking space, it is also transforming the way small businesses access finance as well. Using the power of open banking and a clutch of APIs, SME lenders can speed up their processes and be more effective and more consistent in the deployment of their funds. As an agent that works for Compass since April of 2018, I was always very impressed by SO MANY things that he does. Replying to all emails the same day and usually in less than an hour, regardless of your production as an agent, was just one of the things. Another thing, pre-COVID, was at every COMPASS REtreat (our company conferences), Robert would take the time to welcome and speak to every single one of the attendees. Many times the attendance was close to two thousand people! Another time I visited the COMPASS headquarters in New York from Miami where I live and work. Being a decent agent, but far from the best agent at COMPASS, I would rate myself as an average or slightly better than average COMPASS agent. Our team does about seventy-five transactions per year and our average price is roughly $1.2 Million. With that said, we do rentals for $1,500 per month and everything between that and multi-million dollar homes and condos. The reason I am mentioning this isn't to try and say we are doing a good job, but more that we are just average and don't stand out from the thousands of other real estate agents at COMPASS. Anyways back to the story. While I was visiting the COMPASS headquarters, I could see Robert across the room and that he was very busy. With that said, he took the time to walk over to me, hug me, welcome me to the office, and tell me how much he liked my post on social media about my wife and our anniversary. Talk about how a CEO that is very well known in the industry really pays attention to EVERYONE at the company! Something that still wows me to this day. Back to my mom. My mom listens to a lot of books on audible and she asked me for a recommendation for her next listen. Robert Reffkin recently wrote a book with ALL of his proceeds going to charity. My mom loved the book and finished it within a few days. She is a HUGE fan of Robert know. I was fortunate to interview Robert Reffkin recently with my friend, Chirag Shah. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did when we interviewed him. ============================================== My name is Amit Bhuta and I'm a real estate agent for Compass in Miami and a coach for Chirag Shah Coaching (CSC). If you've never heard of Jason Cassity, well I'm surprised. He's one of the kindest, inspirational, and hardest workers that I know. Besides that, he is super smart and absolutely INCREDIBLE at marketing. One hundred percent of the time he makes it about the consumer, NEVER about himself or his team. A pure entertainer that really gives a shit about the audience. Chirag Shah and I were fortunate to have him on as a guest recently, and I took a ton of mental and physical notes from what he said. Some people just have it. In two seconds, you will quickly realize that HE HAS IT! Hope you enjoy the session. By the way, he lives and works in San Diego, California but knows people all over the world. So he can help you regardless of where you are. To connect with Jason Cassity online, just Google him. There's a TON of his stuff out there - from his vlogs, to his home tours, to his team, to his personal life, to his...., etc, etc, etc. Below is his contact information and Instagram. Last week, Ken Steele looked back at some major PR headaches sparked by students and faculty, from white student unions to a blogging board member. https://youtu.be/qn0ylCsR9Jw But some of the biggest media relations migraines of all start at the top, with board chairs and presidents. At Western University, president Amit Chakma’s double pay made headlines in 2015, but he had done nothing wrong in accepting a contract with administrative leave. The bigger issue was that the board committee normally responsible for negotiating such contracts was bypassed, and the board chair, Chirag Shah, seemed responsible. A task force made 22 recommendations for governance reform at Western, and Shah stepped off the board at the end of his term last November. The year’s biggest PR headache, though, was the abrupt resignation of UBC president Arvind Gupta, only a year into his term. The board hired a passionate reformer with a bold agenda. Gupta didn’t have the usual university administration experience, but instead had founded Mitacs, a fairly small nonprofit. From the beginning, Gupta made it clear he wanted to make UBC more relevant to the needs of society, and he knew that driving change would make some people uneasy. The abrupt departure of a president, after significant executive changes and barely concealed friction with the board chair, would have been bad enough for the media relations people tasked with managing the situation. But then, business professor Jennifer Berdahl wrote a blog suggesting that Gupta lost a “masculinity contest.” The blog itself might have gone unnoticed amid a storm of speculation, if not that board chair Montalbano took exception. He felt “hurt” that accusations of racism and sexism were being hurled by a professor he knew personally. And so, one fateful day, he called her to discuss the blog directly. Montalbano claimed he was extraordinarily careful, throughout the call, to confirm that Berdahl felt comfortable discussing the blog, and that she did not feel her academic freedom was being threatened or compromised. But a few days later, Berdahl either changed her mind or found her voice, and a new blog railed against Montalbano’s attempt to intimidate her and suppress her right to academic free speech. She went to the media, and claimed he threatened to discuss the “trouble she was causing” with her dean. Ultimately a fact-finding investigation agreed with Berdahl, and Montalbano stepped down from the UBC board in August. Global News interview with Arvind Gupta: http://globalnews.ca/news/2484938/watch-one-on-one-with-former-ubc-president-arvind-gupta/ Global News interview with John Montalbano: http://globalnews.ca/video/2173090/extended-ubc-board-chair-john-montalbano CBC interview with Jennifer Berdahl: http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2673915157 Some of the biggest dysfunctions on college and university campuses occur when outsiders attempt to push an agenda without truly appreciating the subtleties of academic politics. It’s vitally important to recognize that universities aren’t so much hierarchies, as loose democracies. Even after someone is fired, the media migraine can continue. Last year, former president Ralph Weeks sued Medicine Hat College for wrongful dismissal in 2013, and Ilene Busch-Vishniac sued the University of Saskatchewan too. Scandals and controversies can explode in the media like a reputational bomb. There’s no point attempting to bury an inconvenient truth on campus, because it will always surface, and when it comes to light the damage will be even worse. It’s always preferable to identify potentially explosive issues early, be proactive in treating them, and transparent in reporting them to the campus community. Best to find the bomb and defuse it, than have it go off unexpectedly and take everyone by surprise. BTW, Ken Steele is available to facilitate workshops or present at conferences and on campuses about PR headaches and how to manage media relations in a crisis. More information at http://eduvation.ca/pr-headaches-how-to-treat-them/ #ICYMI, this week we feature an excerpt from UNB Fredericton’s “dog’s eye view of campus” featuring Lucy. https://youtu.be/aaxJwxOKrQk For exclusive preview access, a week early, to future episodes of "Ten with Ken", be sure to subscribe to Eduvation's "in the loop" email newsletter, at http://www.eduvation.ca/subscribe/
Last week, Ken Steele looked back at some major PR headaches sparked by students and faculty, from white student unions to a blogging board member. https://youtu.be/qn0ylCsR9Jw But some of the biggest media relations migraines of all start at the top, with board chairs and presidents. It’s a considerable risk for a multi-million-dollar organization to rest its reputation squarely on the shoulders of a single individual. Last year Subway’s spokesperson, Jared, went to prison on child sex charges. And the president of a small Christian college in South Carolina resigned in disgrace over his sexual indiscretions. The board itself started growing uneasy, with the departure of senior executives like provost David Farrar, and rumblings of poor morale across the institution. There were controversial, perhaps political, appointments made to the president’s office. Board chair John Montalbano wrote strongly-worded emails to Gupta, urging him to “refrain from thinking controversial thoughts out loud,” and expressing concern about his “willful disregard for the board’s authority.” With the leaking of these emails, in January 2016, Gupta went public with his side of the story, expressing regret that he didn’t push back harder against the board, and instead chose to resign.
