Welcome to the twenty-first episode of Best Issue Ever! Today's guest is Karen Charm, who will be well-known to many X-fans for their great X-Men fan art, prints, and zines. They also do a good amount of pro work for publishers like Scholastic, so follow them pretty much across social media @charmgardens. Okay, you love them and I love them so we're back to the X-Men, baby! We're talking about Generation Next #4, right near the end of the Age of Apocalypse crossover THIRTY YEARS AGO. Time, what even is it. This issue is written by *mumbles* Scott Lobdell, drawn by Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham, colored by Steve Buccellato and Electric Crayon, and lettered by good ole Richard Starkings and Comicraft. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi or Patreon @ ko-fi.com/saracenturypodcasts. or patreon.com/saracenturypodcasts. Zeen and Lula reach a milestone decision in the pages of Dark Horse's The High Republic Adventures Phase III #5, as the first arc of the comic comes to an end, yet sets up what's likely to be a dynamic run through issues 6-10. In Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4), the Sith apprentice contends with an almost Lovecraftian-like horror and inner madness that evokes a Guillermo del Toro film. It's dark and trippy and what Star Wars would be like if it were in the Hellraiser universe. Finally, Jango Fett seemingly makes some headway in his latest job for the Republic, as the plot thickens around the theft of the Hope of Gleen Anselm. Jango Fett #2 (of 4) is the organic prequel to Bounty Hunters and, based on this issue alone, is worthy of being turned into a monthly series.Comics Discussed This Week:Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4) (10:45)Jango Fett #2 (of 4) (20:53)The High Republic Adventures Phase III #5 (44:20)Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Bounty Hunters #42Obi-Wan Kenobi #3The High Republic Phase III #3News: Dark Horse will publish a new, likely four issue, The HighRepublic Adventures mini-series in August. The adaptation of Timothy Zahn's 2018 novel, Thrawn: Aliances, begins its four-issue run with an amazingly robust first issue penned by Jody Houser and Zahn, with art by Pat Olliffe and Andrea Di Vito, colors by Rachelle Rosenberg and Letters by Travis Lanham. There's some whipsawing between the present and past and the action and cold logic flows freely. In The High Republic Adventures Phase III #2 -- written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, colored by Michael Atiyeh and lettered by Comicraft's Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt -- brings us the story of Lula Talisola and how she became the warlord Tartak Vil. Five years ago, we launched this podcast with Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Back then, our conversation concluded with a tumultuous debate surrounding Grant Morrison's New X-Men and the complicated three-way that seemingly shattered an iconic Marvel Comics romance. With so much life lived since those early podcasting days, we return to New X-Men issues 127 through 141, this time examining them through the lens of Scott Summers and Emma Frost. Are they the one true pairing? Is the question even fair? Once again, we use The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman as our relationship guide, exploring Scott and Emma's Love Tank levels and considering how each could benefit from recognizing the other's Love Language. By shifting our relationship focus and surviving five strange years on this planet, our response to Morrison's New X-Men is totally different from how we previously reacted. Our hearts are open in new ways, but are we ready to declare ourselves #TeamScemma? We celebrate and reflect on five years of Comic Book Couples Counseling. Thanks to all of you reading this post and listening to our episodes, we've managed to grow our show and ourselves tremendously. We owe you. We love you. Also, we're joined this week by several artists and listeners who steadied themselves and braved our CBCC Hotline. These creators offer their good wishes, delivering some much-needed Words of Affirmation and absolutely filling our Love Tank. Please reach out to them online, say "Thank You," and buy their art. New X-Men issues 127 - 132 and 134 - 141 were published by Marvel between June 2002 and May 2003. They were written by Grant Morrison, penciled by John Paul Leon, Igor Kordey, Phil Jimenez, Keron Grant, Frank Quitely, inked by Bill Sienkiewicz, Igor Kordey, Andy Lanning, Tim Townsend, and Avalon Studios, colored by Hi-Fi Design, Dave McCaig, and Chris Chuckry, and lettered by RS and Comicraft's Saida, Jimmy, Wes, and Albert!, and VC's Chris Eliopoulos. After months of hype, the Dark Droids crossover event kicks off with a remarkly well-paced and genuinely disturbing (it's a compliment) Dark Droids #1 by Charle Soule, Luke Ross, Alex Sinclair and VC's Travis Lanham. It's a robust start to the five-month event.Hyperspace Stories #7 by Michael Moreci, Andrea Mutti, Gigi Baldassini, Vallerio Alloro and Comicraft's Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt features the series' totem and gives readers a look at a Boba Fett in the process of maturing. Yoda #10 concludes the maxi-series in an exhilarating conclusion that offers up a few cross-media surprises (TV and books!) in a coda by Cavan Scott, Ibraim Roberson, Neeraj Menon and VC's Joe Caramagna for the long-lived Jedi master who's borne a heavy burden since enabling the Galactic Republic's descent into dictatorship and the destruction of the order he was so dedicated to.Comics Discussed This Week:Hyperspace Stories #7 (08:23))Dark Droids #1 (18:08)Yoda #10 (41:17)Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Darth Vader: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4)News: New Printings for Star Wars Legends Epic Collections Rise of the Sith (Vol. 1), The Empire (Vol. 1), The New Republic (Vol. 1) and The Old Republic (Vol. 1) are due in 2024The third and final TPB of Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories from Dark Horse Comics will collect issues 9-12 and is due out, per the publisher, on April 17. All hail the King of Fonts! That's right, Richard Starkings is in the hot seat today, answering all of our questions about lettering, font design, Marvel UK, Comicraft, Doctor Who, and his Elephantmen universe. Richard got into comics in his native UK, where he started lettering for 2000 AD, Warrior, and various Marvel UK titles. After moving stateside, he founded Comicraft, a lettering and design company that works with all the major publishers. His original creation, Hip Flask, was born out of an advertisement for Comicraft and soon had its own series of one-shot specials. Then came the ongoing prequel series Elephantmen, which continues to this day. You can find the writer, editor, and letterer on Twitter and Instagram @RichStarkings._____________________Dollar Bin Bandits is the official podcast of TwoMorrows Publishing. This month's MMM book club is 1997's "Thunderbolts" by Kurt Busiek, Mark Bagley & Vince Russell, Joe Rosas, and Comicraft's Dave Lanphear & Oscar G. (along with a whole host of others for the one-shots, annuals, and Hulk issue.) Who are the Thunderbolts you ask? Well, (spoilers) as Elias found out while reading, they're a bunch of villains pretending to be heroes! Only in Giuliani's New York could that happen.Next episode: We're beginning the ANNIHILATION SAGA with "Drax the Destroyer: Earthfall" #1 – #4, "Annihilation: Prologue" #1, & "Annihilation: Nova" #1–4. Trade readers can find these in "Annihilation Book One" or in "Annihilation: The Complete Collection" Vol. 1.

Rogue and Remy finally shed their past sins, but is that enough to bring them closer together? We delve into the two Howard Mackie mini-series from the 1990s that defined the romance of the popular X-couple. It's a lot of comics to cover, but they are essential to the conversation if we're ever to join them in the next stage of their relationship. Gambit's past refuses to stay where it belongs, and Rogue refuses to let its murky shadow get in the way of the love she so desperately wants to partake in but is still struggling to accept herself. This is a hot and heavy melodrama, and we are here for it. Now, more than ever, we need the aid of Drs. Gottman and Abrams, and their relationship guide "Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love." What are the keys to listening? Putting judgment aside is essential. Being open and honest with who you were and who you are is crucial. The issues covered in this episode: "Gambit" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Lee Weeks, inked by Klaus Janson, colored by Steve Buccellato, and lettered by Richard Starkings. Also, "Rogue" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Mike Wieringo, inked by Terry Austin and Jason Gorder, colored by Dana Moreshead, Mike Thomas, and Digital Chameleon, and lettered by Richard Starkings and Comicraft. DCOCD is the DC Comics Events podcast where we discuss, score and rank every single DC event in order starting with 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths up to... we're not sure yet. Paul and Mike sell their souls to look at the 1999 event Day of Judgement from the creative team of Geoff Johns, Matt Smith (not that one), Steve Mitchell, Chris Jones, Comicraft, James Sinclair and Kevin Dooley. Also on the road to heaven, hell and everything in between is the eerily calm Mark Sweeney from the superb I’m the Gun blog and podcast. When you finally come back to today, head over to Comicosity.com to check out the DCOCD event ladder to see where this one sits on the list.
