Today’s episode focuses on making music at home and income streams you can establish from them. Making music at home can be a profitable business in a variety of ways, from teaching lessons to busking online. The Profitable Musician Summit is all about making money in a variety of ways, not just touring or performing live. Surprisingly, things many artists already do, like live streaming performances, can bring in some supplemental income. Make Money By Making Music At Home Guests on the Profitable Musician Summit like Emma McGann, have made a lot of money from Live Streaming and performing on YouTube. Rick Barker tells us how people set up donation sites and get money, without begging for it or coming off as a starving artist. Corey DiMario and Jennifer Knapp talk about how to make money organically and consistently using Concert Window. Thanks to platforms like StreetJelly, busking online is a great way to perform for an audience and make money while doing so. Frank Podlaha and Annie Arenson tell us how StreetJelly works. If performing isn’t your thing or you just can’t do it, licensing music is a excellent way to get paid for making music at home. Joyce Kettering and Michelle Lockey share the ins and outs of writing and submitting music for licensing. If teaching is close to your heart, teaching lessons at home is possible either online or in person. Judy Rodman and Allie Tyler both make a good living from teaching lessons online and at home. Creating music courses and membership sites are yet another way to teach and make music at home. I’ll share how creating the Female Musician Academy has changed my life and allowed me to work from home full time. T0 hear the full interviews, reserve your FREE ticket to the Profitable Musician Summit. From May 1st to May 10th, you’ll hear from industry experts and indie musicians about making money from music. Welcome to the all new Geek Pub Songs. I say "new" but in all honesty, it's the same as the old Pub Songs Podcast but with a shiny new title and a new format. I changed to the title to fit a new niche. Yes, this show features a lot of Celtic music. As I am the host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I get a lot of awesome Celtic music. So you can expect that. But I wanted a title that better fits my music as well. Most of my original music is Geek Pub Songs. So I decided to make that the new focus. In this show, you will hear Celtic music and Geek music mixed together. You'll also get a sneak peek at my new album of music inspired by Firefly. Yes, my album of Browncoat drinking songs called As Long As I'm Flyin' comes out on March 6, 2018. So I want to share that music with you. Now the first section of each show will be the theme of the show. No telling what will pop in during the second set. But for now, I have some hopeful love songs that share. If you enjoy this show, LIKE it, SHARE it, post in the comments, or tell a friend. Then subscribe to the podcast and my mailing list at http://pubsong.net/ This week in the pub, you'll enjoy music from Melanie Gruben, Serious Kitchen, The Elders, Jiggy, The Blibbering Humdingers, The Jackdaws,The Gatehouse Well,  Dan the Bard, The Founding, and of course, Marc Gunn. These awesome people kindly support my music and allow me to keep this show running for nearly 13 years. The music business has changed. Streaming music is king. Musicians can no longer rely on CD sales to make a living. For that reason, I turned to Patreon to support my music. Here's how it works. You pledge a buck a or more every month. And Your generosity allows me to keep creating. You get monthly music in this Geek Pub Songs Podcast, fun adventures in Celfather Music & Travel, Behinds the Scenes look at the life of a musician, and Stories from the Road. Plus, every month, I'll send you a free song, video, or concert recording. This is one helluva deal for as little as a buck a month Please support what you love. Join the Gunn Runners Club today! I first heard the song "Bean Phaidin" when I first took Gaelic lessons years ago. I love the melody, but I never really learned the lyrics. Now I feel like I've been missing out! Here's the lyrics. Last week, I posted an interview with my fellow hobbit musician, Samantha Gillogly, on the Celtfather Music & Travel podcast. You can find a link to that interview in the shownotes. Incidentally, Samantha has a new band called Revival that is now crowdfunding a new album on indiegogo. If you haven't heard yet, I am performing every Thursday in February at 11 am on my Facebook Live page. It's free show. I'll play about five songs on different themes. You can watch past ones there, or find individual song videos on my YouTube channel. I'm also playing this Friday, Feb 16 at Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co. in Alabaster, AL at 8 pm. I'm sharing Sci Fi Drinking Songs. If you can't make that, join me on Sunday, Feb 18th on Concert Window. I hope you will join me. March 6 is the official release of my Firefly CD. But in the meantime, you can get the Firefly Drinking Songs songbook as well as the Sci Fi Drinking Songs songbook in my merch store on Bandcamp. And since Valentine's Day just happened and you might be in the mood for love, I posted a beautiful Celtic Love sticker in the store as well. It is two cats beautifully bound together in a Celtic heart knotwork. It was designed by Ingrid Houwers. And best of all, you'll also be able to download my Celtic Love compilation, including two unique songs. The sticker is only $5. Bean Phaidin Lyrics It's a pity that I am not, that I am not It's a pity that I am not Páidín's wife It's a pity that I am not, that I am not And the woman he has is dead I would go to Galway, to Galway I would go to Galway with Páidín I would go to Galway, to Galway And I would return home with him in the boat I would go to the Clifden market And into Béal Áth in the Bay I would look in through the windows Hoping to see Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs, Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs and your bones I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out my shoes chasing Páidín I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out the soles and the heels

Valentine's Day Love Song #208

"Name On My Soul" is the most-romantic love song I have written. It's a great Valentine's Day love song. And I come from the Elvis Presley School of Love Songs. So I know. (Though some may think it's from the Neil Diamond School...) The song was inspired by my lovely wife, Gwen. We met at a house concert in Virginia. The next day, we met up in Maryland and went for drive. We stopped along the side of the road to walk in the countryside. It was our first adventure. We've had many more since. We will have many more in the future. There's nothing like being in love to make you write a song, as well as to share it. I wrote "Name On My Soul" two years ago. It is still one of my favorite songs to play. It also gets a bigger reaction than just about any other song I sing.  That's why I recorded it on Kilted Kings debut album Name On My Soul. The album is filled with Heroic, Celtic world music. These are the type of songs that make you want to sing and dance. You'll have fun and feel proud to own this album. So please... Buy Name On My Soul now! I sincerely believe it will make your life a little better. Sing. Dance. Smile With Kilted Kings Because we wear kilts and you are royalty! --- I am back on Concert Window this Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 8 PM Central. The show is once again free to attend. There's no reason to remake a song unless you can give it your own slant...that's just a cover and I think there is a real difference. I know you said your voice is better, but would it just sound more like Leonard Cohen? If you think it could sound more like Marc Gunn doing homage, then do it! I think this version sounds like a nice version of Marc Gunn doing the song. I wouldn't want to speak for Leonard Cohen, but he seemed very enthusiastic about sharing his music and verse.. if you want to do it again... do it, see how it goes!" Which phrase is more appealing to you? At Dragon Con, Mikey Mason and I were talking about this branding topic. He calls his music Geek Comedy Rock. I call mine Celtic Geek. We obviously prefer the term Geek music over Nerd music. But the NerdCore genre has Nerd Music taking off around the country. Would it be better to use "Nerd music"?  Whether it's called Nerd or Geek, it's all great fun. Music from Marc Gunn, Tom Smith, Rambling Sailors, Bill & Brenda Sutton, Brobdingnagian Bards, The Blibbering Humdingers, Aurelio Voltaire, Mikey Mason, Devo Spice.   Pub Talk Now September 22nd is Hobbit Day, and I'm planning a Hobbit Drinking Songs on Concert Window. It's a free concert you can watch anywhere in the world. What struck me about Hobbit Day is that September seems to be Celtic Geek month. Septmber 17th is Halfway to St. Patrick's Day. September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. September 22nd is Hobbit Day. Actually September 17-24th is Tolkien Week. So there's a lot of geekiness to celebrate this month. That said, I am hoping to get 100 people to say they are interested in attending my Hobbit Drinking Songs show on Facebook Event page. So if you're interested, please let me know. Then share the event page and the video so others might know about the big day. My former bandmate, Andrew McKee, finally has a mailing list. Some weeks I want to podcast some new and exciting episodes. Other weeks, I just want to share some news. That's the case for this week's podcast as I talk about a new compilation CD, my first Concert Window performance of the year, Celtic Love Songs and of course the third annual St. Patrick's Day Internet Music Festival. My first Concert Window show is tomorrow night. That's Wednesday, February 9th at 7:30 PM Central Standard Time. Next one is Thursday, March 10th. "Name On My Soul" video is posted for NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert Contest. The Celtic Invasion of Cornwall deadline is next Monday, February 15th. Contact me as soon as possible if you wanna join me on this year's Invasion. I  made updates to the St. Patrick's Day Internet Music Festival and I'm still accepting submission for new bands to perform in the festival. Celtic Love Songs are on this week's Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. You can hear me hosting the latest Renaissance Festival Podcast: Celts at Renaissance Festivals.  I'm finishing up my latest compilation CD which is officially called Celtic Geek... for better or worse.  You can find complete shownotes here. --- If you enjoy this episode, then please post a review on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher. Podcast 087: Tony Gerber

It's cool when I get to talk to one of the artists that I consider my personal influences. Tony Gerber's style of contemplative but present instrumental work speaks to the way that I hear music, and it's clear that I'm not alone - he's a widely followed performer with a worldwide following. What's interesting is that a lot of his performance is done in virtual space. His solo work is perhaps best known in Second Life, where he (as Cypress Rosewood) has performed over 1600 shows. He also experiments with video concerts (most recently on Concert Window) and has a lot of music available through various online outlets. But one of the most interesting things about this chat is our discussion on how, after all these shows, he continues to be creative. Therein lies the heart of a true, in-the-moment artist. I was inspired by this talk, and hope you are as well. Enjoy! And check out more of Tony's work at the Gerbtone site.

Starting in 2000, I published a weekly email called The Bards Crier Music Marketing newsletter. It was one of the most-respected indie music marketing sites online. My goal was to guide musicians on the journey on how to make a living as a musician by documenting my own journey. The newsletter mostly stopped by the time I went full-time in 2005. In show #5, I want to share some of the amazing music marketing tips I learned on the way. Plus, I have one sneaky tip that I didn't know back then that will make the journey a wee bit easier. It was our final concert of 2014 as the mansion waited to get a holiday makeover for various seasonal events in December. The evening was electric with energy which is evident in the three recordings you’ll hear. After giving his thoughts, both good and bad, about the “Concert Window” trend, Dave got the music flowing with native Long Islander, Anthony James Morace. Give a listen and feel the electricity!
