When the Atlas C.1 A400M entered service with the RAF ten years ago, many asked whether this tactical airlift aircraft would ever be as good as the much loved C-130 Hercules. Who better then to pass judgement than a pilot who has flown both aircraft for almost equal lengths of time. InsideAIR met with Flight Lieutenant Seb Davey to find the answer. InsideAIR is produced for the Royal Air Force by RAF Media Reserves. Theme music by RAF Music Services.

Liệu châu Âu có can đảm đánh đổi ?

With reports of an improvement in Russian battlefield tactics, that certainly could be the case. But, other intel suggests that the difficulties with enforcing discipline amongst junior ranks is actually worsening. On this week's Sitrep, Professor Michael Clarke will look at a new report which suggests Moscow has indeed, learned from its mistakes and is preparing a major Ukrainian offensive. Also, as Russia changes tactics we'll hear how high tech satellite imagery has become a vital tool for watching Russian forces in real time and discover who's using that information. As the RAF takes delivery of its latest...and last A400m transport plane, we'll look at how it compares with the Hercules C130-J which it's replacing. And....it's an exclusive club, but what's it actually like being ejected from a fighter jet travelling at hundreds of miles an hour?....we'll hear first hand from former RAF Navigator John Nichol.

Join Matt, Nev and Captain Nick for this week's programme. In this week's show we learn about the unique way a passenger attempted to board their closed flight, A London(!) Airport shrugs off a base closure and insects ground three flights for the UK's Flag Carrier.
Tommaso Ghidini, Ph.D., Head of the Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division at the European Space Agency (ESA), delivers a rousing overview of the medical advances that are improving options for astronauts on long-term missions. Ghidini holds a Ph.D. in experimental and numerical Fracture Mechanics from the Institute of Materials Research of the German Aerospace Centre. Ghidini has been involved with many important civil and military aircraft developments through the years, including the A380, the A350, and the A400M developed at AIRBUS Industries. In 2007, Ghidini joined the European Space Agency (ESA) and is the Head of the Materials Technology Section. Ghidini explains his work, detailing the 3D printing of human tissue for long-term missions in space, such as going to Mars. As he explains, on long-term missions you cannot stop and come back, you must continue, so if there is a medical emergency you need to be prepared to handle it in space. Even the healthiest astronauts can have accidents, burns, etc. that must be dealt with when they happen. As accidents on Mars, such as falls, could be more severe than on the moon, advanced surgery capabilities are going to be necessary. Ghidini talks about the various medical options for these missions. He outlines what will be necessary, such as appropriately trained staff on board, and suitable surgery rooms, etc. And while telemedicine would seem like a good option, it is not possible because of the delays in transmission. However, if there was a space station on Mars, there could be telemedicine from the space station, but that is not yet a consideration. Ghidini discusses their extensive testing of the 3D printers, in reduced gravity, etc. Ghidini explains the process and gives details about the 3D printed skin that comes from stem cells. With 3D printed skin there is no need to retrieve skin from another part of the body for a burn, etc., thus, a second wound is not created—better for recovery, and better for efficiency. Ghidini states that ‘rejection' is low because the skin comes from stem cells from the astronaut's own body. The ESA expert continues by discussing the many challenges of taking 3D printing into space. He explains that radiation is a factor to consider, as is sterility. Ghidini's work at ESA is on the cutting edge of technology and his contributions to space travel will be seen for many years to come.

Meinen PodCast abonnieren: | direkt | iTunes | Spotify | Google |

A NATO exercise is underway in the Baltic States which involves testing a unit that controls air assets. The Deployable Air Command and Control Centre, or DACCC, is usually based in Poggio Renatico, Italy. Over the last week some elements have been moved to Lielvarde Airbase in Latvia where they will stay until October. It’s made up of various containers, computers and satellite dishes and has a team of approximately 100 operators. The exercise, called Ramstein Dust II-17, is being run by NATO’s Allied Air Command. Various staff from the DACCC will be integrated within the NATO battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The exercise scenario demonstrates the defensive nature of Alliance activities and provides visible assurance to NATO members of the Alliance’s ability to meet its obligations. In this piece, a UK Royal Air Force A400M ‘ATLAS’ lands in Latvia, carrying equipment for the exercise. Footage includes shots of the A400M landing in Latvia, equipment being unloaded from the back of the plane and an interview with RAF pilot Flight Lieutenant Ian Brosch, 24 Squadron Royal Air Force. This version has music and graphics, and no subtitles.
