In 2024, a video game podcast was recorded about history. This single piece of recorded audio, while seemingly benign, would have untold ramifications across the media landscape for the next century. In this text, we will be exploring those ramifications and comparing what media looked like before and after Left Trigger Right Trigger's History episode (LTRTH). Before we dig in, let's look at the episode itself. Here are the pertinent details: David looks back. Giovanni sees the present. Greg can't see back far enough. Before we begin, if you'd like to support this and other studies, consider joining our Patreon for as little as $1 or leaving us a rating or review on your podcatcher of choice. The franchise heads to ancient Egypt! This assassin sure does have a lot of creeds! There are so many, in fact, that the publisher gave up on numbering them. This particular entry is considered an action RPG and was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, though (to be fair) several of her sister studios had their hands in development as well. With a massive open environment to explore and tons of side missions to complete, our hosts will only just scratch the surface of its many offerings in their allocated hour. Will the first hour of the game showcase enough to get Tom and Chris invested in experiencing the rest? Tune in and find out if they think this slayer's doctrine is one worth following! It's been long and arduous road to something resembling a worthy adaptation of Frank "dirty" Herbert's sand-based epic Dune, but with the recent release of Denis Villeneuve's Dune 2, we can safely call that one done. I just hope we get enough sequels for the films to start covering such nonsense as half-worm emperors and chair dogs. Aside from the various video game adaptations of Dune - from classic RTS games to modern upcoming survival games - there have been plenty of games that effectively use the desolation and devastation of desert sand. Who can forget the arresting third act of Uncharted 3, or the Tatooine section of KOTOR, or the grand majesty of Assassin's Creed Origins, with its ambitious recreation of sun-drenched North Africa? But which sandy game is the best one, according to our lovely panel? If Alex Donaldson was in this episode, he'd have picked Fifty Cent: Blood on the Sand, but he isn't. For the first time, Ubisoft have released a Prince of Persia game with an option to have all the characters fully voiced in Farsi. It says it wants Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to "depict and respect Persia and Iran". The game has great reviews and a lot of Iranian fans are very excited they'll be able to experience it in their own language. What does this say about culturally sensitivity in gaming? We hear from Alireza Vasefi, an Iranian games reporter for BBC Persian Click, who's played the series for years. He explains what the language option means to him. We're also joined by Kirsty Evers who wrote a study about gaming cultural stereotypes. She found that a majority of her participants wanted to see better representation. Plus, what's it like to help accurately map a historical place for a videogame? Renowned French archaeologist, Egyptologist and historical illustrator Jean-Claude Golvin helped do this for Assassin's Creed: Origins. He talks us through the process. Unfortunately, we spend more time discussing the other definitions and even pronunciations of desert. Is anyone surprised? In this episode: David starts seeing things. Tess's expectations are dashed. Michael and Adam are joined by Ubisoft host and producer Youssef Maguid to discuss a huge turning point in the Assassin's Creed franchise, and, dare we say, history? A lively conversation ensues about what makes this entry essential, the meticulous crafting of Ptolemaic Egypt, and whether the changes were good or bad for the series. Maddy Myers is grieving the loss of her real-life friend while running silly video game errands and stabbing dudes. Maddy Myers is the deputy editor at Polygon and the co-host of Triple Click and The Mutant Ages. Here's some stuff we talked about: Our Feelings Assassin's Creed Origins is a video game about grief. Maddy's not trying to call out The Last of Us, but let's be honest, video games writing is bad. Maddy Myers' on Depresh Mode Turns out the reason I don't play video games sometimes is called anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure. It's a common symptom of depression. The Rehearsal is a very video gamey show in a certain way Maddy thinks maybe Immortality might be offensive, but she doesn't know what it means. Some games that make you feel ashamed: Spec Ops: The Line (interview with Walt Williams coming soon!), Hotline Miami, Bioshock, Papers Please Video Game Feelings is an Area Code Audio production. Hosted and produced by Richard Clark. Associate produced by Nettie Smith. Additional help from Ashley Whitehurst and Matthew Linder.

The Computer Games Museum in Berlin knows that its visitors want to play games, so it lets them. The artifacts are fully-playable video games, from early arcade classics like PacMac to modern console and PC games, all with original hardware and controllers. By putting video games in a museum space, the Computer Games Museum invites visitors to become players. But, players can become visitors too. Video games have been inviting players into museum spaces for decades. In the mid 1990s, interaction designer Joe Kalicki remembers playing PacMan in another museum – only this one was inside a video game. In Namco Museum, players navigated a 3D museum space to access the games, elevating them to a high-culture setting. Since then, museums and their cultural shorthands have been a part of the video game landscape, implicitly inviting their players-turned-visitors to think critically about museums in the process. In this episode, Kalicki presents mainstream and indie examples of video games with museums inside them: from Animal Crossing's village museum to Museum of Memories, which provides a virtual place for objects of sentimental value, to Occupy White Walls where players construct a museum, fill it with art – then invite others to come inside.
