Did you know that most of your fat burning hormones are activated during sleep? I see so many people doing crazy things to try to burn belly fat, and they totally miss out on the easiest way to burn fat…. A process called delta sleep! I'm going to be revealing 5 simple things to do before you sleep so you can burn belly fat, starting TONIGHT. The first step in your protocol is to have banana tea. The second step in your protocol is no food at least 3 hours before bed. The third step is to take a very important nutrient that achieves more deep sleep - Magnesium. The fourth step is to make the bedroom cold and dark. The fifth step is to wear a sleep mask and mouth tape. My favorite is magnesium breakthrough from Biooptimizers. That's why I only recommend Magnesium Breakthrough by BIOptimizers. It's the only organic full-spectrum magnesium supplement that includes 7 unique forms of magnesium for stress resilience and better sleep, all in one bottle. She was being prescribed Metformin, and Angela had insulin resistance. After doing research, Angela started to understand that there was a connection between PCOS and what she ate. When Angela had the surgery for PCOS, she found out about her endometriosis. After having three children, Angela realized there is a connection between the brain, the body, and the impact on your immune system. [06:30] Advice For Dealing With Depression The first thing you need is acceptance. In life, the only thing you can be certain of is change. Anything you can do to create peace in your life will be helpful to you. If you want to run away from yourself, how are you going to sit with yourself? Work on dealing with small moments first. [10:40] The Brain and Gut Connection: Depression Is Linked To Leaky Gut About 90% of serotonin is made in the gut. You can help your gut to create more serotonin. Aligning with your circadian rhythm will also improve your brain. Natural light from the sun will significantly improve your circadian rhythm and allow you to get more sleep at night. Women are depleted of vital nutrients, particularly things like DHA in the brain. It takes a woman two years to recover from pregnancy. [14:10] How You Can Reverse Your PCOS For Good PCOS is a syndrome and is related to insulin resistance. Carbs, stress, and not sleeping will raise your blood sugar. Some people are genetically more carb sensitive. Having protein and healthy fats are really key things that make you feel better. If you have too many carbs, you will feel quite foggy. Another thing that improves insulin sensitivity is strength training. [21:30] Sleep Is An Essential Pillar of Health Sleep is going to make everything else in your life easier. In Angela's corporate job, people would brag about only getting three hours of sleep at night. Most people need seven or eight hours of sleep. You are compromising your health and the way you look when you get less than six hours of sleep at night. [25:35] Tips For Getting Better Sleep At Night How well you sleep tonight is going to be changed by what you did this morning. Get outside early in the morning. That way, you're really regulating the cortisol and melatonin cycle. Red light therapy is also a beneficial tool. Another tip for getting better sleep at night is limiting your exposure to blue lights. [31:10] Hormones: Know When To Dial Back Your Stressors Make sure you have a nutrient-rich diet and you are not constantly stressing your body out. Everyone should fast for at least twelve hours every day. For women, there's a time when you can push and stress your body, and there are times when you should not. Before your period, you're naturally going to have higher levels of inflammation, so it's time to do less high-intensity exercises and start dialing things back. [35:00] The Importance of Insights On Your Health Journey You need to know how you feel when you wake up in the morning. If you don't have a way of tracking, then it will be challenging to know when things start to change. If you can't afford trackers, just start with pen and paper. A CGM is probably the best thing you can get to really fine-tune your eating behavior and lifestyle behaviors. [37:45] Fuel: There Isn't A Perfect Diet That Fits Everyone There isn't one diet that works for everyone; however, there is a perfect diet for you. You can test some of your genetics to understand your sensitivities around carbs and fats. Eating a more ancestral diet is really important; take out processed foods. How you treat your body is the greatest gift you can give yourself. [42:30] Train Your Body and Train Your Mind You need strength training to maintain and build muscle mass. Also, you want to do some cardiovascular training. The more muscle mass you have, the better insulin sensitivity you're going to have as well. Walking is underrated; you need to get up and get your steps. AND MUCH MORE! Chris was 90 lbs. and bedridden from debilitating digestive upset. He was diagnosed with Crohn's disease/ulcerative colitis. He struggled for years and his doctor told him to keep taking the medication (even though it was causing him liver damage), to plan on getting a liver transplant someday in the future, and to start eating coconut cookies. Chris laughed when his doctor said he should be eating coconut cookies (he actually thought his doctor was joking), but quickly realized that the room full of interns were not laughing and it was not a joke! At that moment, Chris realized he had to take his health into his own hands. Today Chris is off of all of his medications and is a successful engineer. He's able to go to work, work out at the gym, travel, and live a totally normal life because he radically changed his diet. Have you ever wanted to try the Keto diet? Or have you tried it before but it was hard to sustain the results? Then today's episode is for you as my guest is Nate Palmer from the Low Carb Hustle Podcast. Nate will detail his personal 30-Day Keto Challenge. We go into great detail about
Today, I am blessed to have here with me again, Founder of Upgraded Formulas and a Chemical Engineer, Barton Scott. Barton always had sharp cognitive function, but he began to suffer memory loss and mental fatigue. How could this be, at such an early age? To make matters worse, tragedy struck at the same time, when he unfortunately lost his mother. Free 7 Day Keto Challenge: http://www.ketokampchallenge.com After taking many supplements during this time frame, nothing was working. Faced with adversity and looming health issues, this is when he decided that he must pursue solutions. He grew frustrated with how mineral supplements lacked effectiveness and absorption into the body rendering most products in the market useless. He set out to fix the problem, using his background in Chemical Engineering and experience as a nutritionist, he was able to identify the issues with the current offerings and applied a solution based on sound science. Through research, and many trials and errors, he realized if you could get mineral particles small enough to absorb into our cells, that was going to be the winning formula for effectiveness. That's where he applied nanotechnology to minerals, and developed a solution that makes the minerals we sell today completely bioavailable - the impact of which we can see during our testing protocols. It was then that he set out to create what today is Upgraded Formulas, founded with maximum bioavailability and measurable absorption to ensure you are getting results. In this episode, Barton Scott opens the show explaining the inspiration behind his company, Upgraded Formulas. Unfortunately, typical supplements and our food isn't enough to get all of our minerals. Barton came up with a better way: highly-effective dietary supplements that are absorbed better by the body than any other products. Plus, Barton created a hair test that is ideal for determining your heavy metal toxicity and mineral deficiencies. Tune in as we talk about the importance of testing, which minerals will be helpful with keto, and Barton speaks about his 11-day water fast. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Martha Carlin. She is a Citizen Scientist that takes a systems approach to looking at Parkinson's disease and finds the answers to PD and many chronic diseases may be in our poop. Free 7 Day Keto Challenge: http://www.ketokampchallenge.com When doctors said her husband's Parkinson's would eventually kill him, Martha Carlin said, “no it won't.” She stepped out of a successful career as a systems expert and into the new role of Citizen Scientist. After years of re-learning the sciences, pouring over research (and commissioning work at the University of Chicago), Martha is now a leading source of deep data on the human biome to unlock preventions and cures for many of our most complex health conditions. Her company, The BioCollective, links personal health history, metagenomics and microbiome analysis to uncover previously unknown links between chronic disease and diet, stress, and environment. She lives with her (thriving) husband John in Lone Tree, Colorado. In this episode, Martha speaks about her obsession with the gut microbiome and how her research helped her husband's Parkinson's diagnosis. We talk about the differences between a healthy gut and an unhealthy gut. Martha reveals the top three things you need to avoid to improve your gut health. Later, we chat all about the products that Martha has developed as a result of her research. If you're interested in improving your gut health, you can find those formulas here: https://biotiquest.com/ (Use Code: KETOK15). [00:30] Why Martha Is So Obsessed With The Gut Microbiome and The Research She's Doing In Her Company Martha's 44-year-old otherwise healthy husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. So, Martha started to teach herself about science and the human body. Food and water are the main inputs in the human body. Martha threw out all the food that wasn't organic. After ditching highly refined carbohydrates, Martha's husband started to do much better than most people with Parkinson's. Martha recommends reading Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues: https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Microbes-Overuse-Antibiotics-Fueling/dp/1250069270/benazadi-20 [12:05] Comparing A Healthy Gut To An Unhealthy Gut People who have a relative abundance of streptococcus are in some disease category. Streptococcus loves glucose. Elevated proteobacteria is another sign of an unhealthy gut. There's a study suggesting that people who drink skim milk have a statistically significant increase in Parkinson's risk. [18:30] Glyphosate: The Main Problem That Is Disrupting Your Microbiome The number one thing disrupting the gut microbiome is glyphosate. Most people do not understand how much the use of glyphosate has increased in the last thirty years. Glyphosate changes the biochemistry of the plant. Also, it changes the biochemistry of the soil, which changes the nutritional uptake of a plant. So, you need to eat as organic as possible. Also, make your legislators aware of the glyphosate problems. [23:55] Other Things You Should Avoid To Improve Your Gut Health Avoid high fructose corn syrup. Highly processed sugars will have a significant impact on your microbiome and overall health. The highest consumption of high fructose corn syrup is usually in poor populations. Also, avoid antibiotics to improve your gut health. [28:00] All About The BioCollective and How Martha Wants To Help People Improve Their Health Martha uses the concept of collect, connect, and correct. She collects poop samples, connects the dots, and corrects the problem. Martha has worked with researchers all over the globe using their samples. Now, they formulate different products to help people. Sugar Shift is something that will help you address cravings. BiotiQuest's Sugar Shift helps your gut microbiome transform the unneeded accumulation of sugars (glucose and fructose) into mannitol. Mannitol is a sugar that isn't stored in the body, so it is naturally eliminated. Get Sugar Shift here: https://biotiquest.com/pages/sugar-shift (Use Code: “KETOK15”) [36:05] Help Your Gut By Using Ideal Immunity and Heart Centered Ideal Immunity is similar to Sugar Shift. If you're traveling, Ideal Immunity is great for your gut. When you're scared of traditional fats, then that opens you up to being hungry for whatever the processed food companies want to feed you. Processed foods always have a lot of seed oils in them. Seed oils are truly toxic. [06:50] The Differences Between Monounsaturated, Saturated, and Polyunsaturated Fats Monounsaturated is the main fatty acid in olive oil. The most common fats in seed oils are polyunsaturated. Saturated fats are the most common fat in coconut oil. It's also the most prevalent fat in butter. The difference between these fats chemically is the stability to heat. Saturated fats are the most stable and have an antioxidant effect. Polyunsaturated fatty acids oxidize and create oxidative stress. [12:40] The Metabolic Pathway For How Dietary Linoleic Acid Omega-6 Ends Up In The Membranes and Inner Fat Cells You swallow a potato chip, and it gets broken up in your stomach a few hours later. Then it shows up in your intestinal tract where enzymes from your pancreas break apart the fats in there. Most of the fats are in the form of triglycerides. We have to use lipases in our pancreas to break it up. From there, it goes into the intestinal cells. Later, it gets picked up from your liver. The liver takes it all apart and repackages it in this thing called low-density lipoprotein. [21:50] How Seed Oils Can Stay In Your Body For Extended Periods of Time Linoleic acid in our fat cells has a long half-life. Body fat is stuck with us until we use it. If you've been eating seed oils your whole life, it will take a couple of years for it to be gone. If you aren't metabolically healthy or fit, you shouldn't do extended fasts because they're releasing so many pro-inflammatory oils all at once. [27:35] Should I Avoid Peanut Oil or Eat More Peanut Oil? Peanut oil is okay if it's unrefined. In fact, peanut oil is actually good because it's a traditional fat. Some peanuts have oil profiles that are more like olives. There's a lot of variables with plants, so it's hard to be absolute about anything. The best quality peanuts are the larger ones, and they do have a better fatty acid profile. [33:15] Why Do Some People Think That Seed Oils Are Good For You? The American Heart Association pumps out 13 journals either weekly or monthly. They're putting out hundreds of articles every year, funded by Procter & Gamble and other companies selling junk food and seed oils. The American Heart Association is giving out the wrong information. Dietitians are doing their homework; their job is to read the wrong pile of articles. The American Heart Association is the biggest fake news organization out there. [36:30] Effects of Fatty Acids on Mitochondria: Implications For Cell Death Read the article Effects of Fatty Acids on Mitochondria: Implications For Cell Death: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12206909/ This study explains why people who have PUFA in their body fat will feel tired when they go on a diet. PUFA is a terrible fuel for your body cells. The mitochondria will stop producing energy when their fuel is PUFA. When people go on a diet, they feel like they can't do it anymore because they are so tired. Energy loss is a huge part of obesity. [44:55] Why Ketones Are A Great Energy Source For The Mitochondria Ketones are designed out of your body fat. When you're burning your body fat, and your liver is healthy, it makes ketones for you. Ketones are like predigested fuel. Ketones are a better fuel, and our cells actually work better when they have access to that better fuel. Hearts that have access to ketones can actually pump 30% harder than hearts that don't. [47:45] The Brain Needs Omega-3 and Omega-6: Here's What You Need To Know Your brain needs omega-3 and omega-6. However, your brain needs longer omega-3 and omega-6. Only fish and animal products can have long versions of omega-3 and omega-6. You have to have these enzymes that elongate them. If you've been eating too much seed oil, your enzymes are not functional, and they don't work very well. Fatty liver is such a devastating disease because it cannot elongate these fatty acids. Plus, we chat about the reasons why you don't want to be in ketosis your entire life. Tune in as we dive into the importance of salt, ditching your carbophobia, and how to start implementing carbs back into your lifestyle. [01:10] How Tara Started Unapologetically Honoring What Was Best For Her Weight has been an issue for Tara since the third grade. Being a stay-at-home mom was definitely not aligned with Tara's personality. She felt sad and depressed as a stay-at-home mom. Tara started weightlifting because the gym by her house only had weights and treadmills. After lifting weights for eight months, Tara looked exactly the same. So, she decided to switch her nutrition – she went from 40% body fat to 11% body fat. Then, Tara found keto. She felt healthy in both her mind and her body. [11:20] The Discomfort That You Have To Go Through Is Temporary The life of your dreams is a life of alignment with yourself and your authentic self. Exercising and diet is a temporary stressor. You aren't going to be stressed forever. The actions required for you to gain muscle is going to suck. However, your body is excellent at retaining muscle. So, the discomfort is temporary. How you see yourself matters way more than how everyone else sees you. [17:30] Why You Need To Align With Your Truth Most people know that they need to stop exercising and sleep more. If you have hypothyroidism, you're super inflamed, your CRP is off the charts, and you're exhausted, then yes, you need to sleep more! Training is inflammatory, and if you're already inflamed, there will be problems. You already know what you need to do; listen to your body. Trust your feelings. [21:15] Why You Don't Want To Be In Ketosis For Your Entire Life If you love being in ketosis, you can stay in it for as long as you want. If keto doesn't feel as good as it used to, then you may want to switch things up. Keto impacts our neurotransmitters and our mental health. When you eat a diet that is mostly fat and protein, your body will favor dopamine production. When you eat a diet that's mostly carbs and protein, you will favor serotonin production. If you're not eating carbs, you're not going to favor serotonin production as much. One of the reasons you should carb cycle is to improve your emotions and mood. [31:20] Guess What? Insulin Isn't The Enemy! If you don't have high blood sugar, then insulin isn't the enemy. Insulin is an energy shuttling hormone. It takes glucose and places it in our bodies. We can store anywhere from 350 up to 800 grams of carbohydrates in our liver and muscles. Athletes can eat a lot of carbohydrates and not be obese because of the energy they are using. If you aren't exercising, your body will store carbohydrates as fat storage. [36:00] Tara Always Trains When She Is Fasted – Here's Why Tara always trains fasted; it's great for your metabolism. If you are healthy, you should be able to train fasted in the morning. If you can't train fasted, then you have some work to do with your blood sugar regulation. Tara will thrive off of adrenaline during a fasted workout. Eating will bring your adrenaline down. [39:20] Adrenals and Salt: The Importance of Sodium On Keto If you don't have enough salt on keto, your kidneys will excrete aldosterone, and then you'll start to have high adrenaline and high cortisol long-term. Rushing women syndrome is a hallmark of adrenal stress. If you're not okay with sitting still and being calm, then you have adrenal stress. Also, if you feel overwhelmed, then you have adrenal fatigue. So, make sure to monitor your salt intake. [43:55] Are You Scared of Carbs? How To Address Carbophobia We have to foster a healthy mindset around the fact that you're not eating carbs when you're doing keto. Carbs are not going to kill you. China has an obesity rate of 5 to 6%, they eat more rice than any other country in the world. In America, we have a 42.4% obesity rate. It's not just carbs that are making you fat. Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for us. It's what happened to our metabolism from sitting all day, overconsumption, and processed foods. [50:20] When You Should Start Implementing Carbohydrates During keto, if you don't feel that great anymore, it's time to start eating carbs again. If you're working out more, you can start using carbohydrates to fuel your body and workouts. If you're not sleeping well and have diarrhea, you should introduce carbohydrates again. Being moody is also a sign that you need to add carbohydrates. AND MUCH MORE! Then, Dr. Tom dives into the five pillars that contribute to disease in the gut. He reminds us that all disease begins in the leaky gut. We talk about how the human body has ten times more bacteria in the gut than all the cells in the human body. By the time he was 42, Dr. Tom started to have vision problems. Tom had a cataract. An asymmetrical cataract in a 42-year-old guy is unusual. After doing some research, Dr. Tom saw that lead poisoning could trigger his health issues. When Dr. Tom tested himself for lead poisoning, he had the highest levels of lead that he had ever seen. Tom grew up one block from the Ford assembly line with no government regulations for heavy metal filtration. He was sucking in a lot of lead as a kid. [16:30] Five Pillars That Contribute To Chronic Disease Intestinal permeability is a Zonulin modulated mechanism. When you have too much Zonulin being secreted, your cells are open too much, too frequently, and too large. All disease begins in the leaky gut. There are five mechanisms that create the perfect storm in developing chronic inflammatory diseases: Genetics Environmental Triggers The impact of the environmental triggers on the microbiome in your gut Leaky gut Systemic inflammation in the body [37:25] You Have 10 Times More Bacteria In The Gut Than All The Cells In The Human Body A teaspoon of poop has more bacteria than all the stars in the known universe. Every forkful of what you put in your mouth will feed good bacteria or bad bacteria. It will take months and months and months to change the environment of your microbiome. Taking a capsule of probiotics each day will not fix your gut. [40:20] Most Bacteria In Your Gut Have 100 To 150 More Genes Than The Entire Human Genome Are we really humans with a whole lot of bacteria? Or are we bacteria having a human experience? Genes determine function; every scientist knows that. The genes that get activated stimulate the production of the proteins that determine action. Is bacteria running the ship, or are genes running the ship? [42:10] 36% of All The Molecules In Your Bloodstream Are The Metabolites From The Gut Bacteria produce exhaust; that exhaust is called the metabolites. Those metabolites get into your bloodstream. 36% of all the small molecules in your bloodstream are the metabolites of the microbiome. The more bacteria you have, the stronger the message. Whenever you have brain dysfunction, you need to fix the gut. Remember, all disease begins in the gut. [51:40] The Autoimmune Disease Solution They're Not Telling You Tom interviewed 85 different people who are the world leaders in autoimmune diseases. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. John Demartini. He is a polymath and a world-renowned human behavior expert. He has over 4 decades of research across multiple disciplines. His work has been described by students as the "most comprehensive body of work", "an extensive library of wisdom" and "wisdom of the highest and most valuable order" Dr. Demartini's mission and vision is to share knowledge and wisdom that empowers you to become a master of your own life and destiny. He's an internationally published author, a global educator and the founder of the Demartini Method, a revolutionary tool in modern psychology. His education curriculum ranges from personal growth seminars to corporate empowerment programs. He shares life, business, financial, relationship and leadership empowerment strategies and empowerment tools that have stood the test of time. In this episode, Dr. Demartini talks about the impact psychology can have on our physical health. Then, he dives straight into affirmations, values, and motivation. It's critical to find the values that fill your voids; Dr. Demartini explains precisely how to do this. Later, we talk about how you can choose to see the downside or the upside when it comes to your daily life, especially during Covid. Tune in as we chat about the importance of gratitude and how keeping a gratitude journal can change your life. [04:10] The Impact Psychology Can Have on Your Physical Health Dr. Demartini has seen hundreds of cases where psychology impacts the progression and regression of chronic conditions. His inspiration is to share the wisdom synthesized from 1000s of years of knowledge from theologians, philosophers, Nobel prize laureates, and other great minds in science, business, finance, and health. Many people do not appreciate the work Dr. Demartini does. However, other people's opinions don't matter to him. What matters is the data that is in front of him. [15:45] Affirmations That Are Deeply Meaningful Will Work For You The word affirmation means a condition of firmness in one's mind. Putting great quotes in front of your mind is valuable. You should say something deeply meaningful and really aligned with what you value most. Things that are just positive thinking can be delusional. [17:45] The Differences Between Motivation and Inspiration Every human being lives moment by moment by a set of priorities. Whenever they're doing something that's extremely high on their values, they are spontaneously inspired from within intrinsically to act. Anything that's low in your values you need motivation for extrinsically. So, you need to find what truly is valuable for you to do. [22:05] How You Can Find Values In Your Voids Every time we judge, we create an emptiness. There's love and judgment. With love, we have fulfillment. With judgment, we have emptiness. You can't judge someone and feel whole. Voids come from judgments; they leave us empty, and they want us to be fulfilled. When we live by our highest priority, we have the most fulfillment in life. Human beings and biological organisms grow most at the border of support and challenge. [26:45] During Covid, You Can Choose To See The Downside or The Upside “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” – John Milton There is nothing in the universe that's inherently good or evil, or positive or negative. Everyone has had something negative happen in their lives. When you look back on it six months later, usually you're grateful that it happened. Illusions of one-sidedness are incomplete awareness. During Covid, you can choose to see the downside, and you can choose to see the upside. If you are comparing your current reality to the past or future and you're not being present, you're missing out on the moment of the magnificence of what it can be doing. [31:50] Bringing Things In The Balance Heals Physical Ailments You really can't have balanced physiology with an imbalanced perception. When you perceive things that support your values, the parasympathetic comes online. When you perceive things that challenge your values, the sympathetic comes online. If you bring those into perfect balance, your heart rate variability is increased, your resilience and adaptability increases, your cardiovascular quotient is improved, your immune system is stabilized and improved. You need both support and challenge to maximize growth and development. Remember, maximum growth and development occur at the border of order and chaos. [37:20] The Greatest Intelligence Discovered In The Universe Where does life originate? There are all kinds of theories. Dr. Demartini is a cytonaut; he studied the origin of cellular and precellular life. He went on a journey through the creation and evolution of the minuscule cytoworld. In his book, Dr. Demartini retraces the four-billion-year history of life on Earth, from the first biomolecules to the human mind and beyond. Check out The Mysteries of the Living Cell: https://drdemartini.com/program/empyreance-vii/ [47:40] The Importance of Developing A Practice For Gratitude Gratitude is a perfectly equilibrated mind. Gratitude and love are homeostatic. When we're living authentically, our heart opens, and we feel grace. When we're authentic, we are spontaneously grateful for our very presence in this universe. If you don't fill your day with challenges that inspire you, your day fills up with a challenge that doesn't. [52:05] How Dr. Demartini Practices Gratitude on a Daily Basis Dr. Martini takes time to write about his gratitude every single day. Your life is filled with so many things you can be grateful for if you take the time to do it. AND MUCH MORE! "I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency" - Plato There is a commercial out now that asks, what if you only had one car for the rest of your life. How would you treat it? We go through vehicles every few years. If a lease is up, one trades it in. If one finds a newer model, one trades in their vehicle for it. With this mindset, one may not take care of their vehicle as well as they should but it is amazing how most will put in the right fuel, change the oil regularly, ensure the fluids are filled and clean, wash their cars, etc. In reality, we only have one vehicle for the rest of our lives. It's our body. We have but one body for an entire lifetime but we often abuse it. Due to the abuse, we end up spending too much time and money to patch it up in order to enjoy our activities of daily living to the fullest as opposed to living activities of daily living to the fullest without the aspect of self damage. Fasting has been an idea around as long as time can remember. Plutarch was quoted as saying, "Instead of using medicine, rather, fast a day." Today it appears all the rage has become an idea of intermittent fasting. Individuals believe they will be healthier as a result of intermittent fasting. Unfortunately, most cannot define health for themselves and what it truly means. However, understanding what they are doing or not may prove beneficial to some while having no effect on others, which depends on the purpose and methods utilized. Beginning with intermittent fasting in humans; the general health benefits have not been fully explored in literature. While most human results in research are found to be inconclusive, they do show a tendency to improve metabolic conditions (glycemia and blood lipids), which could possibly reflect in the reduction of cardiovascular events, the reversal of diabetes mellitus type 2, and a plethora of other neurological and inflammatory conditions. What most utilize intermittent fasting for is not what it is designed to do. Many believe when they fast for short periods of time, they detoxify their bodies and lose body fat. In reality, short fasts such as a 16/8 or a 5/2 for example really help some individuals lose weight. Instead of reducing portion sizes, they reduce a time frame for feeding, thus reducing caloric intake of their diets, which most likely may be lacking in proper nutrients in the first place. If one consumes an abundance of sugar and other processed foods, they will continuously spike their insulin levels and as a result, continue to store fat as opposed to releasing it into the system to be processed as energy and eliminated. Intermittent fasting only reduces the amount of unhealthy calories consumed. However, it does appear intermittent fasting has been made popular by Hollywood celebrities such as Hugh Jackman praising their success on intermittent fasting (not the hypothetical anabolic steroids, SARMS and clenbuterol). It does however appear that longer term fasting may have positive benefits other than reduction of weekly caloric intake. None of the benefits however have any research that point to detoxification. Heavy metals are stored in bone, which is not released with lack of food. It does appear a shorter fast (just water) such as 48 hours may result in higher parasympathetic activity and decreased resting frontal brain activity, increased anger (yes, it makes one cranky) and improved prefrontal cortex related cognitive functions, such as mental flexibility and set shifting. However, no functions of the hippocampus are affected. Fasting for 48 hours (prior to contrary belief) has not shown to improve working memory, visuospacial discrimination or spatial orientation ability. With a lack of food intake, one increases HGH output, increased cortisol release and increased catechlomines. This is a part of gluconeogenesis. Larger meals increase parasympathetic activity as one does not need to release epinephrine/ norepinephrine in order to release glucose into the system. This may put one in a more relaxed state and allowing blood to flow to organs and heal and repair any possible damage that has occurred from abuse over the years. In the brain, intermittent fasting may reduce the effects of aging as reducing food intake (especially incidence of unknown inflammatory foods) has anti-inflammatory effects. Here is how it works: At six hours of non- food intake, the body becomes catabolic, tearing down damaged cells in a process known as apoptosis. The cells recycle waste material, regulate waste products and regenerate. These mechanisms are enacted through the release of human growth hormone (HGH). With the release of HGH, the body may repair tissue collagen, therefore improving the strength of joints (tendons, ligaments), bones, muscles and skin. Burns heal faster and wrinkles may diminish. Research has shown that men who have fasted for only 24 hours have a 2000% increase in circulating HGH. Women have an increase of 1300%. Individuals who fast for a prolonged period of time have reduced levels of triglycerides and boosted HDL cholesterol with more stabilized blood sugar levels (inhibited insulin release.) While a high fat (ketogenic) diet will inhibit insulin release, it does inhibit the release of HGH (as do carbohydrates and proteins). When it comes to the disruption of neuronal autophagy, disruption of this increases neurodegenerative states throughout the brain. Elevated circulating levels of insulin reduce the amount of neuronal autophagy and cause metabolic dysfunction and accelerated degenerative states. It may be essential for bouts of fasting for the brain to "clean itself up" in order to improve cognitive function and less "clutter" that blocks healthy cognitive function. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels govern the creation of neural and synaptic formation. High levels of BDNF lead to healthier neurons and increased synaptic transmission processes between neurons. Low levels of BDNF have been shown to be linked to dementia (Alzheimers), Parkinsons and oher cognitive disruption. Fasting for 36 hours has been shown to boos BDNF levels by up to 400%. Having just completed 5 days of fasting (water only), 36 hours is extremely difficult. One is choosing to cause pain upon themselves to improve themselves on many levels. As with exercise; one push up will not build muscle or prevent any diseases. It is the culmination of multiple movements such as push ups done each day for long periods of time to see benefits. In the same regard, one long and painful fast will not cause lifelong health. It is the culmination of prolonged fasts that may possibly accomplish this. However, research has yet to prove this so it is purely theoretical at this point. There are ideas of how best to fast such as drinking herbal teas, taking cleanses, etc. No research has yet to fully back this up. What is known about fasting thus far is that it may have improved cardiovascular health, reduces cancer risk, repairs genes and may increase longevity (due to a retarding of the shortening of telomeres). The primary mechanism of intermittent fasting is due to the impact on insulin sensitivity. Reduced insulin levels does allow your body to burn fat for fuel (ketosis). Mounting evidence shows that as a result of ketosis, you have a reduced risk of chronic disease. Before fasting, one should understand what the purpose of it is. What are you trying to achieve? Some believe not eating will help them lose weight. In reality, your body does go into a self preservation state (during longer fasts) and when it does, your resting metabolic rate slows (reduced metabolism). Doing any type of fast then should be done with not only a deep understanding of human physiology but also with the oversight of a seasoned healthcare professional. Warning: Those that should avoid fasting are those who have chronic stress, cortisol dysregulation, pregnant and nursing mothers, and those who do not understand the science and efficacy of long term fasting and intermittent fasting. biohackhumans.com Find us: Instagram (@biohackhumans) Facebook (@biohackhumans) Twitter (@biohackhumans) Tumblr (@biohackhumans) Contact Us: support@biohackhumans.com
