Tara Garrison is a health and life coach.  She is the founder of HIGHER, a Health & Life Coaching company dedicated to helping individuals optimise their well-being through training, nutrition, mindset, and biohacking.  She has worked with celebrities, professional athletes, and top executives, guiding them toward peak health and performance. She is also the author of Short-Term Keto, the host of the Inside Out Health Podcast, the creator of Higher Retreats, and the producer of the Coach Tara App. Beyond her professional achievements, Tara is a mom of four, an avid weightlifter, a Boston Marathoner, and a passionate nature lover. She has a great social media presence on Instagram and TikTok at @coachtaragarrison, where she shares valuable health tips and insights into her daily life. Here are some of the things we talked about in today's show:  ·       How you feel from the inside of your body is what matters. ·       Your body loves you and is doing everything to help you thrive. ·       Love is wanting what's best for your body. ·       Self-love should elicit supportive action. ·       Fat adaptation allows the body to use fat as fuel, while keto adaptation requires prolonged carb restriction to produce ketones. ·       Keto can significantly benefit those with metabolic dysfunction, such as obesity and high blood sugar. ·       Long-term keto may lead to issues like muscle loss, hormonal imbalances, and reduced gut health. ·       Carbohydrates can play a crucial role in a balanced diet and should not be completely eliminated. ·       Mental and emotional relationships with food can be affected by restrictive diets like keto. ·       Keto is a therapeutic tool but may not be suitable for everyone, especially those without metabolic issues. ·       The duration of a keto diet matters; short-term use can be beneficial, but long-term adherence may have drawbacks. ·       Keto can raise dopamine levels but may lower serotonin, affecting mood and mental health. ·       A balanced approach to nutrition, including fiber and carbohydrates, is essential for overall health.  Today's podcast is sponsored by my Keane Edge Group Coaching Program: https://briankeanefitness.com/the-keane-edge-program   (Website) www.taragarrison.com (Facebook) www.facebook.com/coachtaragarrison (Instagram) www.instagram.com/coachtaragarrison/ (Youtube) www.youtube.com/coachtaragarrison (Pinterest) www.pinterest.com/coachtaragarrison/ (Tiktok) www.tiktok.com/@coachtaragarrison

A bill moving through the state legislature would mandate private health insurance to cover orthotic and prosthetic devices, supplies and accessories. Right now insurance covers the minimum for an amputee to be able to function. But it doesn't cover prosthetics such as running blades for athletic activities, which can cost thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. A Minnesotan has made it her life's work to promote equitable access to equipment and care that make physical activity possible for her and others. Nicole Ver Kuilen testified at the Capitol in support of the bill. On Monday, she will be running the Boston Marathon thanks to her own running blade. She felt sad and depressed as a stay-at-home mom.  Tara started weightlifting because the gym by her house only had weights and treadmills.  After lifting weights for eight months, Tara looked exactly the same. So, she decided to switch her nutrition – she went from 40% body fat to 11% body fat.  Then, Tara found keto. She felt healthy in both her mind and her body.  [11:20] The Discomfort That You Have To Go Through Is Temporary The life of your dreams is a life of alignment with yourself and your authentic self. Exercising and diet is a temporary stressor.  You aren't going to be stressed forever.  The actions required for you to gain muscle is going to suck. However, your body is excellent at retaining muscle. So, the discomfort is temporary.  How you see yourself matters way more than how everyone else sees you.  [17:30] Why You Need To Align With Your Truth Most people know that they need to stop exercising and sleep more. If you have hypothyroidism, you're super inflamed, your CRP is off the charts, and you're exhausted, then yes, you need to sleep more! Training is inflammatory, and if you're already inflamed, there will be problems.  You already know what you need to do; listen to your body. Trust your feelings.  [21:15] Why You Don't Want To Be In Ketosis For Your Entire Life If you love being in ketosis, you can stay in it for as long as you want.  If keto doesn't feel as good as it used to, then you may want to switch things up.  Keto impacts our neurotransmitters and our mental health. When you eat a diet that is mostly fat and protein, your body will favor dopamine production.  When you eat a diet that's mostly carbs and protein, you will favor serotonin production.  If you're not eating carbs, you're not going to favor serotonin production as much.  One of the reasons you should carb cycle is to improve your emotions and mood.  [31:20] Guess What? Insulin Isn't The Enemy!  If you don't have high blood sugar, then insulin isn't the enemy. Insulin is an energy shuttling hormone. It takes glucose and places it in our bodies.  We can store anywhere from 350 up to 800 grams of carbohydrates in our liver and muscles.  Athletes can eat a lot of carbohydrates and not be obese because of the energy they are using.  If you aren't exercising, your body will store carbohydrates as fat storage.  [36:00] Tara Always Trains When She Is Fasted – Here's Why Tara always trains fasted; it's great for your metabolism. If you are healthy, you should be able to train fasted in the morning. If you can't train fasted, then you have some work to do with your blood sugar regulation.  Tara will thrive off of adrenaline during a fasted workout. Eating will bring your adrenaline down.  [39:20] Adrenals and Salt: The Importance of Sodium On Keto If you don't have enough salt on keto, your kidneys will excrete aldosterone, and then you'll start to have high adrenaline and high cortisol long-term. Rushing women syndrome is a hallmark of adrenal stress.  If you're not okay with sitting still and being calm, then you have adrenal stress.  Also, if you feel overwhelmed, then you have adrenal fatigue.  So, make sure to monitor your salt intake.  [43:55] Are You Scared of Carbs? How To Address Carbophobia  We have to foster a healthy mindset around the fact that you're not eating carbs when you're doing keto. Carbs are not going to kill you.  China has an obesity rate of 5 to 6%, they eat more rice than any other country in the world.  In America, we have a 42.4% obesity rate. It's not just carbs that are making you fat.  Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for us. It's what happened to our metabolism from sitting all day, overconsumption, and processed foods.  [50:20] When You Should Start Implementing Carbohydrates   During keto, if you don't feel that great anymore, it's time to start eating carbs again.  If you're working out more, you can start using carbohydrates to fuel your body and workouts.  If you're not sleeping well and have diarrhea, you should introduce carbohydrates again. Being moody is also a sign that you need to add carbohydrates.  AND MUCH MORE! After learning about 3 x Boston Marathoner, Justine Galloway's journey on the Today Show, we had to reach out to se if she would share her story on the podcast. We are so grateful that Justine agreed to do so! Justine, a former runner for Rutgers University and a 3:16 marathoner, was diagnosed with Runner's Dystonia at age 31 after suddenly not being able to run without extreme difficulty. Rather than quit the sport, she figured out a way to keep moving forward…by running backwards. Since her diagnosis, Justine has run 7 half marathons and the New York City Marathon backwards. In doing so, she set two World Records. What is most inspiring about Justine is her ability to take a seemingly insurmountable obstacle and turn it into an opportunity. Justine can be found on Instagram at Rennur316. Give her a follow and help her inspire others to overcome seemingly impossible challenges. Speaking of obstacles, don't miss our bonus interview with the amazing Noah S., Lisa's nephew, at the end of the episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/runfartherandfaster/message

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with endurance athlete and suicide prevention advocate, Lynn Keane. She loved running in school and was competitive on the track before taking a long hiatus from the sport, coming back at age 39. Running and triathlon remain a huge part of her life. It helped her to grieve over the tragic loss of her child, and allowed Lynn to find a path forward showing tremendous perseverance and resilience. The popular mantra, 'I am enough,' is actually an insult; it is disempowering. I get that it is a bridge in the self-development process because of the programming that people have received and they believe this lie but the analogy that I like to use is: If you went to a beautiful mountain lake and saw the most epic sunset of your entire life and you said, 'You are enough; yeah, that's enough'; what are you talking about? We are so much more than 'enough;' that is the understatement of the century. That belief has to change. - Tara Garrison Are You Stressed Out Lately? Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. Power Quotes From The Show How to Tap Into Your Creation Energy "You already are worthy. 100% you are worthy of success, of love, of better health. You don't even have to question that and the more you know that the more you will just be. A tree isn't sitting there wondering if it's worthy, it just is. Remember this when you catch yourself with a negative mindset about your body, work, or personal growth. When we see our worth; we feel it and when we resonate in it full of gratitude and truly see ourselves, that is actually creation energy. When you tap into that, you're no longer coming from a place of scarcity and trying to prove yourself to the world." -  Tara Garrison Why Are We Attracted to Food Camps? "We are so attracted to specific food camps because of our lack of self-development and people wanting to be led, taught, and get the Cliff notes of what is best. Then maybe they try that diet and they truly do feel better and it helps them. For example, If someone heals their SIBO with the carnivore diet, they are going to be feeling a lot better. But then if you have all of these respectable health professionals telling you all the reasons why this is THE best diet in the world for all humans, which a lot of it is for their monetary gain, you're not going to be really listening to yourself and what your own body needs. If all of that happens, you are setting yourself up to be in this very safe way of thinking." -  Tara Garrison Getting Back Into Powerful Alignment "When you are out of alignment, ask yourself, 'What is my fear?' She felt sad and depressed as a stay-at-home mom. Resources from this episode:  Check out Tara's Website: https://www.taragarrison.com/ Inside Out Health Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inside-out-health-with-coach-tara-garrison/id1468368093 Follow Tara Garrison  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachtaragarrison/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/taragarrisonpersonal Twitter: https://twitter.com/coachtarag TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coachtaragarrison Get Short-Term Keto: A 4-Week Plan to Find Your Unique Carb Threshold: https://www.amazon.com/Short-Term-Keto-28-Day-Unique-Threshold/dp/1628604409/benazadi-20 Upgraded Formulas (code ketokamp): https://www.upgradedformulas.com/products/hair-kit-test Join the Keto Kamp Academy: https://ketokampacademy.com/7-day-trial-a Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUh_MOM621MvpW_HLtfkLyQ Free 7 Day Keto Challenge: http://www.ketokampchallenge.com Order Keto Flex: http://www.ketoflexbook.com -------------------------------------------------------- / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. Keijo Taivassalo is 82 years old, and at the 2021 Boston Marathon he demolished the competition, winning his age group by more than 30 minutes. We think Keijo is the embodiment of the Eat Move Think approach to living a long and healthy life. So what's his secret? We had Medcan's chief medical officer, Dr. Peter Nord, sit down with Keijo to explore the life of the master marathoner, and the lessons the rest of us can draw from it. Episode 93 webpage features video of the entire podcast! LINKS Keijo embodies the Five Secrets of Longevity that we covered in a previous episode featuring Dr. Peter Nord. Check it out.  Read this CBC article by Gregory Strong about Keijo.  See Keijo Taivassalo on Twitter and Instagram. Check out the University of Toronto track club where Taivassalo trains.  Read this article by Noel Paine on Taivassalo in Canadian Running Magazine. Watch this CBC video on Taivassalo.  INSIGHTS When Taivassalo was growing up in Finland, it was the norm to use cross-country skiing not only as exercise, but as transportation. He cross-country skied to school in the winter, as did many others. Dr. Nord says that finding ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, without it feeling like exercise, is a great way to promote longevity and keep active into your later years. [21:58] Taivassalo attributes his good health to getting a good night's sleep and a stable diet. He makes sure to get eight or nine hours of sleep every night, and follows a Mediterranean diet (something we mention often lately!), which consists of lots of fish, fruits and vegetables and helps to reduce inflammation. “I eat meat too, but not too often,” he says. Establishing routines for good sleep and diet habits have helped both his mind and body stay sharp. [18:28] You might imagine that a marathon runner requires rigorous training, but Taivassalo paces himself. Following a program by University of Toronto Masters coach Walter Faion, he starts his first training days running three miles a day, and works his way up to a long run of 23 miles. In the last weeks before a marathon, he scales back his mileage to ensure that he stays rested. With overuse injuries, he reduces his mileage but doesn't stop moving. It's important to listen to your body and to be aware when it's telling you to slow down, or to stop. [14:51] Researchers have linked time outdoors to lower mortality rates. As a runner, cross-country skier and a Finn, Taivassalo is outdoors a lot, and he thoroughly enjoys it. Finland has very short summers, but Finns take advantage of the outdoors all year round and are known for their relaxed culture and appreciation of nature. Running is a solo activity, but Taivassalo really enjoys being part of his running club in Thornhill, and getting together with other runners at the University of Toronto track club. “It's easier… You can talk and have a more relaxed run.” Finding a community you enjoy, whether it is related to fitness or not, can boost your wellness and help you live happier, longer. [16:17]

WOW Dr. Bill Johncock is just incredible! Bill is a podiatrist in Hickory, North Carolina, and a father of three, including Logan, who is 23 and was born with Angelman Syndrome. Bill, who is 57 and a six-time Boston Marathoner, shares how he ran his first Boston Marathon at age 19 with his then 55 year-old father and then went on to run over 100 marathons. When Bill learned that his son, Logan, would not be able to reach the same milestones as his other kids, Bill decided to create new milestones for Logan and began racing with Logan by pushing him in a customized racing wheelchair. After meeting Dick and Rick Hoyt at the race expo at the 2005 Boston Marathon, Bill was inspired to qualify for Boston with Logan as a duo team. Bill shares his 16-year journey toward qualifying for Boston with Logan (yes even duo teams like Bill and Logan need to meet the Boston qualifying standards) and then experiencing the long awaited joy of finally reaching the start line as one of only thirteen duo team participants at the 2021 Boston Marathon. Listen with some tissues nearby. Notes: Bill shares how Ainsley's Angels (Ainsleysangels.org), which ensures inclusion in endurance events, helped him and Logan get to the start line. Scott is a 7-time Boston Marathoner who has carried my very own childhood cancer warrior Izzy's name with him while completing his 26.2 through Boston. Inspired to fundraise in his dad's memory, Scott's impetus to run Boston came in 2013 when as a spectator he witnessed the Boston Marathon bombing. Scott ran his very first marathon on Patriot's Day the following year and has run Boston every year since. I had a really fun time catching up with Scott, talking all things running, and having that understanding of how transformative running can really become when you're training to push yourself beyond limits you thought you once had. Scott fundraises for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and draws inspiration for putting in the miles from stories like Izzy's of people, adult and children, fighting unimaginable battles with cancer. Dana Farber Cancer Institute is continuously on the cutting edge of cancer treatment and with fund-raisers like Scott, offers hope for a world without cancer. https://www.dana-farber.org/

"It was important for me to pursue this dream and make it happen. I have this belief of, you can’t be what you can’t see. So if other young girls are not seeing women as leaders and women as physicians and women in high positions and important jobs, they may not think they can be there. That made it extra important for me to continue to pursue this dream."   Every day, we are bombarded with news about the Covid-19 pandemic. But an important part of that conversation that is often missing is, "What happens after I get Covid?" Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez is here to answer that critical question. Dr. Verduzco-Gutierrez is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, and she has developed a post-Covid recovery clinic to aid in the rehabilitative recovery of patients who have functional, mobility, and cognitive deficits after getting infected with the coronavirus. On this episode, Dr. Verduzco-Gutierrez — who is a two-time Boston Marathoner and mom of two — talks about her lifelong passion for medicine and for taking care of people. She discusses the very small number of Hispanic women in medicine, and explains what it means to her to be a role model in the field.   Thank you to Tracksmith for sponsoring the On the Job series on the Ali on the Run Show! Throughout this pandemic, we've been sharing articles on our social media from multiple publications in which Dr. Erich Anderer is frequently quoted. Rather than just post the articles, we thought we would reach out to the source.  When we did, we learned that he is a founding member of the North Brooklyn Runners and a Boston Marathoner.  Dr. Anderer couldn't have been more gracious with his time.  He's a busy guy.  In addition to serving as the Chief of Neurosurgery at NYU Langone – Hospital  Brooklyn, and an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery  at the NYU School of Medicine, he's a runner, yogi, musician, and a dad.  Dr. Anderer was born in Japan and grew up in NYC,  where his family utilized a Reiki and shiatsu practitioner in  conjunction with the family physician for preventative health care and  maintenance. Dr.  Anderer performs about 200 spine and brain surgeries a year, but his goal is to keep patients out of his office.  As a result, he has a special nterest in self care as a  means to prevent and treat most causes of neck and back pain. He is also  helping to investigate ways to reduce the use of opiates in  post-surgical patients, and eliminate their use in chronic pain. When COVID-19 spread to the NYC area, all elective surgeries were canceled, and as a result, Dr. Anderer became a key physician in treating coronavirus patients.  We learned SO much from Dr. Anderer, and we hope our listeners do as well.  Please share this information with your friends and family,He provided  a lot of sound advice. I have learned that the faster I listen to my intuition, the better my life gets faster." - Tara Garrison   Organizing Your Life Through Meditation "When I meditate, I am able to separate myself from the stress and sit back to look at it. It's like I'm an eagle on top of a mountain, I'm soaring around, and I'm looking down at my life to see what I can shift, let go of, or add something new. So, instead of being stuck in all of my stress, meditation has helped me see how I can change my life." - Tara Garrison     Creating A Sacred Space & Time "What has helped me set healthy boundaries is having an established morning routine and maybe some people just think it's too whoo-whoo but it has been crazy powerful for me. It's the only way I'm able to create the life I want to live because if I don't schedule in time for a gratitude practice or meditation session, it does not happen. I can't just put on all the brakes in the middle of the day for them; it's just not going to happen. So, I have to create sacred space for me and nobody is bugging me at 4:30 in the morning." - Tara Garrison       Links From Today's Show    Organifi Gary Vaynerchuk 291 Drew Manning Kathryn Dixon Byron Katie Malcolm Gladwell Ralph Waldo Emerson Will Smith - I Believe Self Discipline Is The Definition Of Self Love Scott Duffy Breakthrough Mastermind Tony Robbins Scott Duffy Matthew Hussey 110 Bedros Keuilian Man Up by Bedros Keuilian Steve Jobs 302 Mark Groves Inside Out Health with Coach Tara Garrison - Josh Trent: Breathwork, Ayahuasca & Following Your Heart Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community KELEO Program Inside Health Podcast with Tara Garrison Tara Garrison Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube LinkedIn   About Tara Garrison Tara Garrison is the founder of HIGHER: Women Who Rise, a health optimization coaching experience for high performing women on a deep dive journey inside themselves, physically and emotionally. Our guest this week is Jennifer Conroyd of Fluid Running is joining us to confirm that "aqua jogging" as we called it in the Tim O'Donnell interview is in fact the next big thing. Jennifer is an Ironman finisher and also a 15 time Boston Marathon qualifier.  She is an expert on fluid running and is here to tell us all about how to do it right, the science behind it, and why more and more professional athletes are turning to it. Thanks to last weekend's guest, Leadville 100 Trail Run finisher Jason Cohen and his journey to transform himself from a body weight of nearly 300lbs to the fighting weight of an ultramarathoner. You can listen to the interview on episode #215.   Jason mentioned his weight loss competition that he has with his peers who were also obese at the time. I did that a couple of times early in my career with co-workers. First was my 30's and we called it "battle of the fatties". The second time was in my early 40's, different job when I was traveling to Virginia every week. Again, we called the competition "battle of the fatties" and we did it as a percent of weight loss over two months. I mentioned during the interview with Jason that was 179, which is about 10 pounds heavier than I want to be at this time of the year. One of my athletes that I coach, Matt, is about the same weight and we both want to lose 10 pounds. Our goal is to get to 170 by St. Patrick's Day on March 17th. She is an avid athlete, Boston Marathoner and Ironman. Jennifer discovered the benefits of deep water running when she sustained an injury while training for the Chicago Marathon. Due to her injury, she could no longer train by running on the road, so she took to the pool and ran solely in deep water for the six weeks leading up to the marathon. She not only finished the marathon but qualified for the Boston Marathon. Amazed by her successful finish, she created Fluid Running in 2011 with the goal of helping other injured runners. Fluid Running was voted as one of the Top 20 Best Workouts in America by Men’s Journal. Let's get into the interview now with Jennifer Conroyd. Sponsor - Riplaces: Riplaces are my favorite lace system. Riplaces are the most comfortable, durable and clean-looking system you can lace into your shoes. If you want faster transitions, go to MHE Sponsor Discounts page by going to www.milehighendurance.com, or directly to https://www.riplaces.com/collections/mile-high-endurance Fluid Running Discussion: I just heard another interview on another podcast I listen to with pro triathlete, Lisa Roberts, who talked about how she used deep water pool running to train during running injuries. I've now done three sessions, one using the app and a Jennifer Conroyd led training session. The other two were at the end of my swims, where I spent 10-15 minutes with the Fluid Running belt only and just run. I keep forgetting to bring my heart rate monitor, but I'm eager to see how high I can get it in water. I know so many people who are sidelined from running right now due to running injuries and talked with them about pool running as an option. The first reaction I get is, "you mean that thing that the old people do with the floaty belt?" There's a stigma that is the discussion here. We are evolutionarily hard wired to not show weakness. If that's what the old and feeble are doing, I can't be associated with that. Older athletes (yes, they are athletes…just older), have been in their bodies longer and know what's good for it. And yes, many of them can't take the pounding of running so they are staying fit.   I've listed about a half dozen great links to more information from Fluid Running here in the show notes. There will also be a section in the Resources page before the end of the weekend. Here's an excerpt: "central blood volume is increased through the redistribution of venous blood and extracellular fluid from the lower to the upper part of the body in the same way as during face immersion reflex (Campbell, Gooden, & Horowitz, 1969). As a result of the increase in plasmatic volume in the central part of the body, the heart and central circulation are distended, leading to stimulation of volume and pressure receptors of these tissues, which in turn leads to a re-adaptation of the cardiovascular system, The authors are with Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Laboratory of Research on Exercise, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Hydrostatic Weight and Heart Rate in Immersion 179 increasing central venous pressure, cardiac output, and stroke volume, and finally lowering HR (Watenpaugh, Pump, Bie, & Norsk, 2000). Last week we discussed the TrainingPeaks University course, 'The Science of Endurance Hydration'. I'm still taking it and want to complete it before I give my report. Mayor Michael Hancock on Thursday announced the new three-pronged approach, alongside Denver Transportation and Infrastructure Director Eulois Cleckley. The accelerated plan will coordinate striping bike lanes when streets are paved; install “high comfort” lanes that include physical barriers to separate cyclists from cars; and “significantly” expand the bike network in the city’s most densely populated areas, like northwest and central Denver, to increase the number of households within a quarter-mile of a high comfort bikeway. Hancock on Thursday said that the “reality is we’re ushering in the bicycle revolution in Denver, Colorado,” Denverite reported. “I grew up in the city. We didn’t have bike lanes. We rode our little Huffys without bike lanes, protected or striped. And today we get a chance to see a city committing to creating comfort lanes for people to ride their bikes.”   Closing: Please support our affiliate brands that support the show and help you get faster! "I really hope that people seeing amputees in line at the grocery store don’t think, 'Oh, you poor thing,' they wonder, 'Oh, are you a marathoner?'" In April 2013, Adrianne Haslet was living her dream as a professional ballroom dancer. On Marathon Monday, she found herself near the Boston Marathon finish line, watching the runners finish the iconic race. But then, so many lives were forever changed that day. When the two bombs went off near the finish, the second blast took Adrianne's foot. On this episode, she recounts that day in Boston, and talks about rebuilding and moving forward. She talks about learning to wear, walk, and run with a prosthetic leg, and beautifully talks about the importance of being defined not as a victim, but as a survivor. Despite being at the center of tragedy that day, Adrianne has become an inspiration — and a Boston Marathoner herself. In this episode, Gretchen DeVault and Tera Wozniak Qualls talk with Charlene Trinh about how she turned a two decade career in Wealth Management into a leadership practice developing conscious leaders through mindfulness, intention, and wellness. Conscious Leadership Episode Highlights: Conscious Leadership: Bringing one’s whole self to a leadership role. Not about being seen, but you seeing yourself. Stepping outside your comfort zone, over and over again. Understanding your own patterns of self sabotage and developing a plan to manage times when you are sabotaging progress in order to stay outside of your comfort zone. Creates a culture of trust, support, growth, and collaboration. Becoming a conscious leader comes from “tuning in” – getting connected to your heart, gut, intuition. Do the inner work and get clear on who you are not and own You! If you’re going to hold place for someone else, you have to be solid on who you are. Network with those that do similar work and find those that support you. Make sure you are clear on who you are as a coach and who you want to work with; you can’t be everyone’s coach. Find your gift and share it with the world. If you have a hard time finding it, get a mentor or coach. Authenticity is your superpower. Charlene Trinh I am passionate about supporting others in their journey of wellness and Wellbeing. I cultivate a holistic approach to wellness that balances not only the body, but also the mind and spirit. My clients benefit from my wide-ranging knowledge of Integrative Health (combining wellness disciplines from Ayurveda, Western and Eastern healing modalities), and my extensive experience with nutrition, detox and exercise. I also believe that in order to achieve true happiness and wellbeing, we must live a life consciously aligned with our passions and visions. I therefore work with my clients to identify their unique definitions of success, and to process and breakthrough the limiting beliefs that are holding them back from their full expression. Endless possibilities exist when we make heart-centered shifts to find our own voice, and take actions to maintain balance and authenticity in our life and career. I spent 18 years as a corporate executive in Wealth Management, and even though it looked like I had it all on the outside, inside I felt there had to be more to life. I started to invest my free time exploring my passions and began to train for marathons, practiced yoga and meditation, and completed wellness and personal development programs. Through my own personal inner journey, it became clear that I had been playing it small and was settling instead of taking risks and going after what I truly wanted. It was then that I found the courage to lean in and fight for an uncommon life, an existence that would light me up from within. We each only have one precious life, and there is no dress rehearsal. We are all meant to forge the life of our dreams. Having found my own freedom, I feel called upon to pass it on, to inspire others to do the same and to create a positive ripple effect in the world. I am committed to being a guide for others so that they too may rediscover their own inner wisdom, step into their full power and find balance physically, emotionally and spiritually. As Pablo Picasso once said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”   Charlene is a 4-time Boston Marathoner, a yogi, and an avid traveler. and foodie. When she is not coaching, teaching or speaking at events, she enjoys spending time with her husband Brandon. Charlene has a B.A. from UCLA and a J.D. from UC Hastings of the Law. River has Spina Bifada. Jodi didn't know much about the congenital defect of the spine at the time, but she learned about it as she fell in love with little River and became passionate about supporting him.  When we talked she had already qualified for the 2018 Boston Marathon. She was training for it. She was looking forward to running this dream marathon for River.  And then she showed up in Boston last week. The race turned out to be anything but what she had pictured. Heavy rain, cold temperatures and 50 mph winds made the conditions historically challenging.
