This is not sustainable,' then it's time to put your investigative hat on and start doing something different.” ”If your child has bad breath, we need to figure out what's going on in the body that  is driving that because that too is not normal.” “The healing starts with us…with the parents.” ”Our kids deserve to feel better, and if they're eating that way, they probably have symptoms that are coming from that…Their body is telling you that you need to do something, so let's just start taking those baby steps.”   Dana Kay Resources:

This week, we are going to delve into some of the most burning questions surrounding reducing ADHD symptoms naturally.  Joining this episode is Andrea Daigle, board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner and one of our remarkable expert coaches at the ADHD Thrive Institute and a regular on this podcast.  In this episode, we explore some of the most commonly asked burning questions surrounding detox strategies, dietary changes, sleep patterns, technology's impact, and so much more.   Links mentioned in the episode:  Symptom Reduction Tool - www.adhdthriveinstitute.com/tool  Lab Testing Video - https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/lab-testing-for-adhd1  Portable Sauna - https://shop.adhdthriveinstitute.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=sauna    Key Takeaways: [2:49] The best detoxing modalities for kids: detox baths, jumping on a trampoline, rebounding, sweating, sauna, lemon water, and milk thistle [14:37] What to do if you've changed the diet and are not seeing progress  [19:48] Are the dietary changes we recommend (cutting out gluten, dairy, soy) permanent? [29:06] How much technology is too much? Why does my child's behavior become worse after watching technology? [35:20] Potential reasons your ADHD child might struggle with sleep   Memorable Moments:  ”A detox bath - #1 - that is something super easy and gentle to do that you can do 2-3 times a week.” ”You want to start low and slow, build your way up…I usually find starting with 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of magnesium flakes, and you can work your way up depending on how much they weigh.” ”Ideally the recommendation is 1 minute per age, and so if they are 5 years old, then 5 minutes in the sauna with that temperature nice and low.” ”If you're somebody who is really solid on diet and you've been gluten, dairy, and soy free for 6 months - 8 months - and you've given it the good amount of time that healing takes, and you're still not where you need to go, then that tells us we need to look deeper. We need to look deeper at what else is causing that inflammation.” ”We want to get a really good snapshot of what's happening in the body…because in order for you to see what's really going on and for you to move the needle, we need to have some answers as to what's happening in the body, so the testing will allow us to do that for you.” ”If you think about this bigger picture, when you go through a healing process and your children and your family are doing so much better and you're feeling good, we just don't ever want to see you go backward. Let's just keep moving forward, and keep that inflammation down as much as possible.” ”Technology… is created  to be addicting, and it is created to be over-stimulating, and that's a lot for a little brain to handle.“ ”Sleep is so important. That's when we're growing, that's when we're detoxing, that's when we're shifting and our minds and our brains are getting bigger, so it's super important that sleep is well-balanced.”   How to Connect to Andrea Daigle Free call: https://bit.ly/3X5ZVvT   Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/  Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/  Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute  International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/  Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl  ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

Excited to have Dana Kay on the show to talk about a really important topic that is effecting a lot of families these days, ADHD. Dana is a Board-Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner and the CEO and founder of the ADHD Thrive Institute, and the creator of the ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids program. She also just published the book THRIVING WITH ADHD: A Guide to Naturally Reducing ADHD Symptoms in Your Child. More than 6 million children in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD with more than 60% of those children solely relying on medication for treatment. Following her son's diagnosis, Dana did what many parents do: began her son on medication. Unfortunately, while helping her son focus, the medication also led to increased anxiety, weight loss, and sleepless nights. Eventually, the side effects became too big to ignore. Leaning on her training in holistic health and nutrition and all of the research she could find, she and her family changed course to an all-natural approach that has enabled her son to thrive. Dana's son is now in middle school, he is happy and thriving and has not been on medication for years. In this interview, we talk about:What are some of the worst foods for children with ADHD?  What do children with ADHD need to eat MORE of?Beyond changing the foods our children eat, what are other necessary steps to support ADHD naturally? What are some of the common underlying stressors you see in children with ADHD? What functional lab tests are your favorites in working with children with ADHD? What are some of the beneficial dietary supplements?

If you have a child with ADHD, chances are, your child's behavior has changed the way you thought your family would be together. ADHD can cause a child to have severe tantrums, intense hyperactivity, uncontrollable impulsivity and can toggle between lack of focus and intense focus. It turns out there is a huge connection between certain foods and inflammation that can greatly increase and intensify ADHD behaviors. Many of us have heard about the brain-gut connection but this is the first time I'm learning about it as it relates to ADHD. I'm hanging off every word of my guest, Dana Kay, who since her son's diagnosis, has dedicated her life to helping her son and other families regain the calm and harmony in their homes by managing ADHD in a different way. This episode left me feeling frustrated and angry because the things I learned about ADHD from Dana have never been brought up to me by any medical professionals for the 15+ years we've been trying to find answers to help with my son's intense behaviors and big emotions brought on by ADHD. I know many of you feel the same way. In this episode, we talk about: How to build a solid nutritional foundation for the body How reducing inflammation is key to lessening symptoms Why certain foods are so detrimental What ADHD kids need to eat more of Hidden stressors in your child's body and how to find out what they are This is one of the most important conversations I've had on my podcast and I hope you'll listen and try some of Dana's recommendations. ADHD looks different in everyone, usually coexisting with other conditions, such as depression, anxiety, OCD, disruptive behavior disorders, learning disabilities, sleep disorders, and substance abuse. There's a wide spectrum of symptoms. Here are some current stats:It's estimated that from 2016-2019, kids ages 3-17, 6 million were diagnosed with ADHD.50% of those also had a behavioral disorder30% had anxiety17% had depression77% of these kids received some type of treatmentADHD treatments range from pharmacologic interventions to more holistic approaches, and some combine the two. Most people's experiences, such as mine when my kids were young, were meeting with your pediatrician or psychiatrist and being sent home with a script for a stimulant, told when to have your child take it, and to check back in 30 days. If that med didn't work, there were a host of others to try. If that approach didn't work, then you were sent home with multiple scripts to work together. Meanwhile, your child was zombie-like, not eating or sleeping, not hanging with their friends anymore, BUT they also weren't bouncing off the wall. What else can we do for our ADHD kids who will become teens, young adults, and older adults someday? I'm not against medication, for some, it's very helpful. On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the challenges to keeping your kids eating the right foods. Andrea Daigle is a regular on the show and is a board-certified holistic health practitioner and a member of the team at the ADHD Thrive Institute. She specializes in coaching families through making diet changes through food choices, meal planning, and getting buy-in from not just the kids, but also the extended family.   The most important step is clear communication on a daily basis. Have family discussions about what specific steps need to be taken and what the long-term goals are.   Have the kids get involved with meal planning, and take them grocery shopping. Get your whole family in the habit of reading labels to see which foods are healthy and which foods aren't.   Be sure to comment on the positive changes as they occur. When grandparents try to give your children sweets and sabotage all your efforts, offer them a healthy bag of treats for their house instead of the ice cream and candy. Encourage them to offer other “bonuses” like trips to the park or a shopping spree at the dollar store.   Eating healthy from a young age is a great way to raise awareness about nutrition. Your kids will develop a lifelong understanding of ingredients and nutritional value even as they become adults.   Key Takeaways: [5:04] Common obstacles to changing diet in kids [6:13] When your partner isn't on board with dietary changes [9:40] Getting the rest of the family to buy in to the changes [12:29] Stressing the positive changes through communication   [13:56] How to get the grandparents on board with dietary changes [18:19] How to handle birthday parties [21:26] How to handle trips to the neighbor's house [23:18] How to handle eating during the holidays   How To Connect With Andrea Daigle: For a free call with Andrea and the team at ADHD Thrive Institute: https://adhdthrivemethod.com/meet  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/   Memorable Quotes: “It is so important to set aside a time where you and your partner can just be together and start a discussion, really talk through what's going on and what needs to change. Really be mindful and talk through it together.”   “When we started this journey with my son, my goal was to be able to wake up in the morning without dreading what mood my son would be in for that day.”   “For my son, what I found really helpful was getting him to understand why we are doing what we're doing.”   “I started very, very slow. I would swap the old bread with the new bread and take these baby steps. More and more kids are being diagnosed with chronic illnesses these days–anything from allergies to severe depression. You may have experienced this with your own teen, whether it's constant trips to the psychiatrist for changes in anxiety meds, or endless food sensitivities that seem to come out of nowhere. In 2018, research revealed that 54% of kids are chronically ill, up from 15% a few years before. This means that chronic illness is growing among young people at a rapid rate…but why?The answer lies in our guts. We might view our digestive system as having one function–food in, waste out–but the truth is a lot more complicated. Our guts contain the mechanisms that monitor our immune system, regulate our bloodstream and even control our mind's function! The food we put into our gut doesn't just affect our digestion…it shapes our long term physical and mental health! This week, we're talking to Dana Kay, author of Thriving With ADHD: A Guide to Naturally Reducing ADHD Symptoms in Your Child and founder of the ADHD Thrive Institute. Dana is a holistic health expert who focuses on educating parents about gut health. She helps families understand that a better diet can relieve symptoms for a myriad of health issues among children–including ADHD and other mental disorders. She's worked with over one thousand families to create better overall health for chronically ill kids!In our interview, Dana breaks down the function of the gut within the body, and why so many kids suffer from conditions that result from poor gut health. We're also discussing what dietary changes can be made to heal our guts, and how we can convince our kids to change their diets for the better.

While dana's book is geared more towards children with ADHD, the same advice for which foods to choose also helps adults with ADHD. Dana feels that choosing the right foods and discussing nutrition for people with ADHD do not get enough attention. It is a powerful way to manage your ADHD, and she feels more and more people should be aware of the benefits of choosing the right foods. Dana also says that the worst foods for people with ADHD to consume are those that contain gluten, dairy, and soy. She says that if you had to choose one to start with, it would be removing gluten from your diet because it has many benefits. Dave and Dana also talk about how there is a connection between the brain and the gut. I think there is no better evidence of this than when you get butterflies in your stomach when you are nervous. Dana discusses how to get on the right track, including starting with whole foods, that consist of fruit vegetables grass-fed proteins, and healthy fats. She also advises you to drink spring water. Andrea is part of my amazing team at ADHD Thrive Institute, a board-certified holistic health practitioner, and also a FDN-P. She is truly an expert when it comes to working with kids with ADHD and other similar disorders.   On this episode, we dive into the topic of meal prepping and how one can save an abundant amount of time in the kitchen by preparing bags of stew and freezing them, making a large amount of dinner to have leftovers for the next day, preparing a list of meals along with the list of ingredients at hand, and much more. We also talk about sneaking healthy fats and nutrient-dense foods into fruit smoothie bags to have a hearty and quick breakfast, lunch, or afternoon snack.    Key Takeaways: [4:29] Ways to save time in the kitchen [5:42] How to effectively meal plan [10:49] Fast, easy, and delicious meal prep options [19:09] How to prepare for school lunches [22:34] How to deal with days when you don't feel like cooking   Connect with Andrea: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/our-approach/   Memorable Quotes: “My number one tip for saving time in the kitchen is definitely meal planning… you're getting a really good all-around healthy variety… you're going to be saving money on the grocery bill and you're just going to have more free time.”  “There are lots of different ways you can meal plan, but I really think fine-tuning it based on what works best for your family is going to be helpful.” “The next step that I always suggest is to check your calendar. Look ahead. What does your calendar look like for the next week? If you know you have a busy day coming, you really want to plan for that day to be something quick, easy, or even leftover.” “After you have all that ready, you have your plan, get a grocery list going. You create that list with everything you need. And block out some time to head to the store so that you can get all of those ingredients that you need for the week.”  “I find the best and fastest things to meal plan would be things for breakfast, overnight oats. Overnight oats are so nutritious. You can make a big batch on the weekends, and they don't have to be the same everyday.” “We have this wonderful plan and we think it's great and then we get home and say, ‘I don't feel like it'. I don't feel like it, my husband doesn't feel like it, so what do we do? I think it's very important to have some go-to options in your freezer.” “Every Friday, my family goes to our local pizza parlor and they have gluten/dairy-free pizza which is phenomenal. And I'm sure in your area, you can find a place that offers those options, and if they don't, you can omit the cheese… or bring your own cheese.”   Dana Kay Resources:    Website - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/adhdthriveinstitute  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/74302454/  Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute     International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/    Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://adhdthrivemethod.com/masterclass-rego-page     ADHD Parenting Course - https://adhdthrivemethod.com/adhd-thrive-jump-start-parenting-4-adhd    ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

In this week's episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a delightful and insightful conversation with Andrea Daigle. Andrea has been on her journey with treating her ADHD-diagnosed son for about four years, and she shares the key tools and approaches she took in order to implement healthier eating and social habits for her son.   The main topic we discussed in this episode is how much diet can affect behavior. We all know that establishing a dietary system that consists of whole and organic foods is the best approach, but it can be costly. So, Andrea shares her secret to keeping the price of “eating healthy” at a low rate. The key is to try to find a system that works for your child and your family.    Andrea puts a strong emphasis on implementing the right system for one's child. Every child is different and one specific system is not going to get results for every single child. Parents have to try things out and fixate on what works for their child and what does not. But the important thing is to try. Get started making the right changes for your child and your family.   Takeaways:  [2:59] The start of Andrea's journey in treating their son with ADHD [4:37] Andrea's son's adverse reaction to the medication [7:19] The reason why Andrea connected with The Soaring Child [10:48] How families should start to make dietary changes [17:15] Getting kids to transition from dairy milk to non-dairy milk [19:50] Keeping the cost of “eating healthy” low [22:31] How to deal with a picky eater [26:17] How to deal with friends' birthday parties when they're implementing changes in diet [29:35] Key final takeaways   Where to Find Andrea Daigle: For a free call with Andrea and the team at ADHD Thrive Institute https://adhdthrivemethod.com/meet    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/    Memorable quotes:  “But in the process of me exploring these different avenues… you know… working with doctors… medication and that sort of thing, he started having outbursts, tantrums, and just… a lot of emotional dysregulation.”   “It got to the point where the school was calling me every day so I did it… I put him on medication, and it was awful. He had the most violent rages on that medication, and it just exacerbated the problem.”   “The number one thing that was the most eye-opening was that my son, at 7 years old, said, ‘Mommy, I feel happy, I feel good.' And that was when we knew we were making a difference.”   “ A very good place to begin is taking a look at those snacks. It's a very good place to start for everybody. Look at those snacks and what's coming in and out of those packages.”  “The thing you want to do with birthday parties is be prepared. We always want to be prepared and plan ahead. The very first thing to do is call and find out what's being served at the birthday party.”   “We started this journey when my son was 7. He is almost 11 years old now, and he chooses to eat this way. If we go to a party, he's the one that takes charge of what we bring, what that sweet treat is, because he doesn't want to go backwards. He doesn't want to feel what he used to feel.”   “The last thing I want to say is if you're feeling overwhelmed, or you're feeling like you have nothing left to try, or your children are really struggling, you haven't tried implementing diet and nutrition changes, now is the time. Don't sit on it. Don't wait. Don't even take a second guess about it. Now is this time, because it is going to be the best decision you will ever make for you and your family.”

When Dana's son was young, she knew he seemed more active and energetic than other kids. But it was more than that. He was impulsive, defiant and had frequent meltdowns that left the entire family feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. They took their son to a developmental psychologist who did several sessions and testing. Within a few weeks, he was diagnosed with ADHD. Soon they began the conventional treatment for ADHD – medication. And while medication did calm their son, it actually caused new symptoms. In response, doctors prescribed more medications to take care of the symptoms from the original medications. When doctors recommended a fourth medication, to treat anxiety that seem to be caused by the other medications, Dana had had enough. She decided to look for more natural approaches to ADHD.   Research pointed to diet as a significant intervention for ADHD. They began by removing a few food types that tend to be inflammatory for most people. Then, food sensitivity testing uncovered specific foods her son should avoid, including seemingly healthy foods like raspberries. They also did extensive lab testing, giving them insights on his gut infections, dysbiosis and parasites, and uncovering nutritional deficiencies. In particular, testing found high levels of pyrroles, a molecule excreted in urine. High levels of pyrroles can deplete nutrients and lead to a poor tolerance for stress plus mood swings. About four months of making all of these changes, Dana's son was a different kid. His tantrums reduced, and they found he was more flexible and calmer. Gradually, he weaned off medication. And over time, they began to see his true personality. Today he's a thriving middle school student with top grades. And just as importantly, the family's home is peaceful. All this inspired Dana to completely switch careers from being an accountant to a holistic health and nutrition practitioner. Dana is now the CEO and founder of the ADHD Thrive Institute and the creator of the ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids program. Her mission is to help families reduce ADHD symptoms naturally so that children with ADHD can thrive at home, at school, and in life.
