Text us about this show.In the Wisconsin music scene, Ben Mulwana is as unique as they come. His roots are in Uganda and you hear those roots in much of his music, however the soulful and heartfelt delivery of his songs will have most listeners captivated. To call Ben a singer-songwriter is almost too little. He's an expressive artist who draws on both the commonalities and differences in culture to create songs that listeners will probably agree they can identify with. Love, loss, and healing are common themes in Ben's lyrics and the spaces between the three are where a lot of his songs come from. Text us about this show.Greg Koch is undeniably one of the best guitarists on the planet today. He's well versed in a plethora of styles that he doesn't just play technically well, but with feeling and touch that leaves the listener in awe. His knowledge of guitars and who knows how many influential guitarists from a breadth of genres is deep. Very deep. His videos on YouTube, especially the ones he does for Wildwood Guitars, aren't just jaw droppingly good for his playing (with some gristle, of course), but they come with a good dose of humor that pulls you in even further. Text us about this show. One can't overstate how important Marc Golde and Rock Garden Studio have been not just to the NE Wisconsin music scene, but to the state scene overall. Marc has garnered multiple WAMI Awards over the years as a producer, musician, and studio owner and all are well deserved. He has rightfully earned the praise of countless musicians who have had the good fortune to record at Rock Garden, share a stage with him, or simply because he is who he is: genuine. After three decades of recording excellence, Marc is pulling the faders down on Rock Garden Studio, moving on to new challenges, and returning to an old flame (i.e. writing music). From a young age growing up in a musical family on a farm in Iowa, Carmen had a love for making music. In 2023 she released her first solo album, Room To Grow, which is a rich tapestry of original songs along with a cover or two that show off Carmen's ability to deliver great interpretations of other's tunes. Text us about this show.Jason Reisdorf is a brilliant musician. One listen to his two bands, Natural Satellite and Son Reis Project, bears this out. Natural Satellite is a duo with his wife, Karli, who is a cellist and vocalist. They write and perform laid back, jazzy originals that are creative and introspective. Then there's Son Reis Project (SRP), a trio with Jason Goessl on guitar/bass and Ryan Thomas on drums. SRP has both jazz and heavy metal as its foundations and from there it's an experiment in sound that is indescribable. Add on top of that a good variety of programs (including Into The Music!) and personalities and you have one very interesting radio station. But why stop there? Text us about this show.Eric Madunic is simply an incredible musician and human being. He's the bassist behind Wisconsin music legend Willy Porter and in the fantastic blues informed band, Blind Fiction. Eric has some seriously great bass chops and has several WAMI Awards and nominations to back up that claim. His goal with his music isn't to be famous, but to be heard enhancing the arrangements of the songs written by his bandmates. He plays for the enjoyment music brings him and those who hear the bands he's a part of. Combine that with his humble spirit and outright kindness, you have a bandmate that you can count on not just to hold down the low end, but as a friend."Where Skies Are Blue" performed by Willy Porterwritten by Willy Porter℗ 2023 Weasel Records. Text us about this show.Imagine a point where Metallica, Queen, The Black Keys, Foxy Shazam, Meatloaf and others intersect. Now stop imagining because that point exists with TUK. Andrew, Allen, Michael, and Ty pull from all of these influences (and keep adding more!) to create a sound unique not just in the local music scene in NE Wisconsin, but in the state. Their latest album, Confrontations, was three years in the making and is powerful and downright cinematic in scope. These guys aren't a one trick pony either as their acoustic performances are every bit as powerful as when they're plugged in. Beth Riley chats with Deven Berryhill of The Surfaris and The Tourmaliners on this episode of Artist Spotlight Podcast Series. They talk about Deven growing up with his Dad, Bob Berryhill of the legendary surf band The Surfaris, playing music with his Dad, Mom and brother, as well as his own kids and how music has been passed down to them too! Also, there is talk of The Tourmaliners brand new album "Surfidia" released on December 20, 2022! Several cool guest artists on there including a Riley household favorite: Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets! More topics discussed include the influence of Bono from U2, desert island discs, influences, members of The Tourmaliners and how they met, how he feels to be a part of The Surfaris with his Dad and maybe he'll answer the difficult question that Beth asked him: The Surfaris or The Tourmaliners....which is the better band? Spoiler alert: he doesn't really say one is better than the other, but, he does talk about how they are different. All that and so much more in this fun episode. Grab your surfboard and don't "Wipe Out"....we're gonna get a little "Swanky"!

Join Smilin' Jay McDowell, guitar-player-turned-upright bassist from the small town of West Lafayette, Indiana, as he takes you on his journey from watching and playing in bands in the back room at Lucy's to traveling the world with BR5-49. If you lived in Nashville in the 90s and loved live music you may have known about the punk scene at Lucy's, but you definitely knew about the resurgence of hillbilly and western swing played in the seedy honky tonks on Lower Broad. Jay felt equally at home in both places. Some nights he'd hang out and watch bands at Lucy's or play a gig there with the band Hellbilly. Other nights he'd go downtown to drink cheap beer and watch Greg Garing, Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, or BR5-49 play at Tootsie's or Robert's Western Wear. When he was asked to join BR5-49 he jumped at the chance (it may have been the liquor talking), switching his primary instrument from guitar to stand-up bass and adding some additional style and substance to a band already bursting with it. Jay's tales include his favorite shows at Lucy's, what the scene was like on Lower Broad both pre- and post-BR5-49, chatting with Keith Richards and John Fogerty, touring with Bob Dylan, and what it was like when ALL the record companies came a-callin'. Smilin' Jay McDowell heads the video department at The Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, which opened to bring attention to studio and road musicians who play a vital role in the creation of music but rarely get the attention they deserve. He even has his own well-deserved exhibit in the museum celebrating his work as a session bass player with artists such as Marty Stuart, Dierks Bentley, The Black Crowes, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, The Crickets and BR5-49. Go see it. This episode is dedicated to John Van Etten (1966-1995), Timothy White (1952-2002), and Jim Bessman (1952-2021). Episode Music Hellbilly - Make a Mess Los Straitjackets - Fury Lambchop - Cowboy on the Moon BR5-49 - Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts) BR5-49 - Ole Slewfoot (Live from Robert's) Additional Mentions/Links: John Van Etten, The Shindigs, John Delworth, Laura Matter (The genius behind kickball), Hellbilly, The ‘Boro, Fun Girls From Mt. This week, Jamie Hilsden and I have a meeting of the minds about how punk's meaning and associations have changed over time, and his punk Christmas EPs--The Myrrhderers Slay Christmas and The Myrrhderers Slay Some More--give us the place to start that conversation. Hilsden brings a very interesting perspective to the conversation as a Canadian Christian who grew up in Israel just a few miles from Bethlehem and started working up the demos for these songs while on tour with a band in Poland. We chew on the challenges involved in converting Christmas songs to to punk, and which songs simply didn't interest him. We also talk about the record that served as proof of concept that Christmas punk could be good as punk and Christmas music. You can find both EPs on his Bandcamp page. In this episode, I also talk about a modern Christmas classic, Nick Lowe's Quality Street. I talked about the album and Lowe a bit with Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets back in 2019, and other artists have talked about finding it reassuring because it proved that they could be themselves and still make seasonal music.
