What would you do if failure was impossible? What's something you've always wanted to do, but never find "the right time"? To answer these questions, I started one little list in January, and it has completely changed my life. We all know about bucket lists — but what if the real game-changer isn't chasing what excites you, but confronting what scares you? Enter: The Fear List.Fear has been in the driver's seat of my life for too long, and I realized during my January meltdown, that my avoidance of discomfort and rejection were directly impacting my happiness and growth. Most of the things I was depressed about in my life could be traced to fear-based avoidance and inaction. That's why I created the fear list — it helps you rewire your brain to stop self-rejecting before you even try. Think of it like exposure therapy... this list of things will create proof that you can do scary things, and the more small uncomfortable things you do, the less scary the big things will feel. This episode is all about breaking out of fear-based paralysis and taking action on the things that hold you back. If you've been feeling stuck, playing small, or letting fear dictate your choices—this is your sign to flip the script. In this episode, I cover:✅ How my fear has kept me stuck in life, love, and career✅ The connection between fear, anxiety, and perfectionism✅ Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) and why some of us with ADHD/neurodivergence fear rejection more✅ The power of exposure therapy and why courage is a muscle✅ How to create your own Fear List to build confidence, resilience, and momentum✅ Questions that will help you brainstorm your fear list✅ Getting honest with yourself about the stories you're telling yourself✅ Easy examples of things you can include on your fear list✅ What's on my list, and the wins I've already tackled (LITERALLY LIFE-CHANGING)✅ Why staying accountable and tracking your progress gamifies fear and makes it fun Remember: "The risk you're afraid to take, could be the one that changes your entire life."For advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. Emotional dysregulation is one of ADHD's most disruptive yet overlooked symptoms. It's not just a passing mood or a fleeting frustration. For those with ADHD, emotions can spiral into sudden waves of intensity—anger, hurt, joy, or anxiety—seemingly out of nowhere. This week, Nikki and Pete explore the science and strategies behind this turbulent experience, offering insights to help listeners navigate its challenges. At its core, emotional dysregulation is the brain's difficulty managing emotions effectively. The overactive amygdala—the emotional alarm center—reacts strongly, while the underactive prefrontal cortex struggles to rein it in. When dopamine levels are low, the prefrontal cortex can't regulate the amygdala, resulting in overwhelming emotional reactions. These aren't just limited to anger or sadness; moments of extreme joy, excitement, or frustration can also feel uncontainable. And then we have our dear friend, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), a particularly painful form of emotional dysregulation. RSD amplifies the sting of perceived rejection or criticism to an intense, often unbearable level. These emotional wounds, though short-lived, can ripple through relationships, self-esteem, and productivity. Many people find themselves stuck in cycles of avoidance, self-doubt, and shame, all of which undermine their ability to connect with others and move forward in their lives. But there is hope. It turns out there are actually actionable strategies to manage emotional dysregulation, from mindfulness practices and therapy to building awareness of emotional triggers. Simple steps, like labeling emotions, taking deep breaths, or stepping away to reset, can make a real difference. For some, professional help, whether through coaching, medication, or therapy, provides essential tools to regain emotional balance and build resilience. This episode sheds light on a hidden aspect of ADHD that affects everything from relationships to self-esteem. It's a reminder that while emotional dysregulation is challenging, it's also manageable with the right tools, support, and understanding.Links & NotesADDitude: Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria and Emotional DysregulationBeyond BookSmart: ADHD and Emotional DysregulationEmotion dysregulation and right pars orbitalis constitute a neuropsychological pathway to attention deficit hyperactivity disorderUncovering the Roots and Evolution of Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria - Neurodivergent InsightsRejection Sensitive Dysphoria and ADHD with Dr. William Dodson — Take Control ADHDSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (01:16) - Support the Show: Become a Patron at patreon.com/theadhdpodcast (03:07) - Emotional Dysregulation (14:06) - The RSD Connection (19:33) - So... what do you do? ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It is not uncommon for ADHDers to be labelled as ‘sensitive', ‘emotional', ‘too much' or as ‘going from 0 to 100', with some ADHDers even being given additional diagnoses in attempt to explain why they present this way, all because emotional regulation and the way it presents in ADHDers is often not considered or well understood. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) shows up to make you doubt your parenting decisions, increasing the guilt around what you should have done, and layering in the shame on how you're ruining your kids forever with your mess ups.Yikes! RSD also taints how we relate to our partners, which can stir up the same conflict over and over again. It influences how we react to the slightest eyebrow raise and every “what if” scenario. It makes you scared to bring up important conversations.  Knowing it's not just you is half the battle. The esteemed Hall of Fame ADHD Podcast Guest and dear friend Dr. Sharon Saline graces the show once again! This week: why is it hard for ADHDers to be authentic joiners? Sharon offers her wisdom on the value of community in managing ADHD, addressing the fears and hesitations that can often prevent individuals from seeking out communal ties. One of the main topics we discuss is avoidance behaviors towards community engagement. There are myriad reasons why a person might be reluctant to participate in group settings, such as social anxiety, previous negative experiences, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), fear of the unknown, and confusion about how to navigate new situations. Dr. Saline emphasizes the potential impacts of such isolating behaviors on a person's physical, mental, and social well-being. She also highlights the importance of fostering relationships, regardless of their novelty, and addresses the common misconception that having a few friends who may not fully understand an individual's experiences is sufficient. How do we approach overcoming the avoidance of community engagement? Dr. Saline provides practical advice for those who seek the connection a community offers but are held back by their fears. She discusses the potential benefits of therapy or professional healthcare consultations to better understand and manage these fears. She also provides strategies to combat the paralysis often brought on by the fear of RSD and the "what if" scenarios that can hinder one from entering new group situations. Her advice to those who've had negative group interactions in the past is particularly powerful, urging them not to let past experiences define their future opportunities.Links & NotesLearn more about Dr. Saline on her site, https://drsharonsaline.com, and make sure to pick up a copy of her fantastic book, "What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life”— it's fantastic! Archie joins Aniesa to discuss RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria), the extreme emotional sensitivity or pain which is triggered by the perception that they are being rejected or criticised by important people in their life. It can also come into play when they feel like they have failed to meet their own, or others, expectations. They talk about how RSD presents, what the experience feels like and whether RSD is specific to ADHD including what other conditions or issues can present in a similar way. KEY TAKEAWAYS RSD is often linked to ADHD but trauma can present in the same way. Individuals with RSD can feel a lot of shame when they are given feedback or criticism. RSD isn't recognised as a mental disorder or illness, which can make people feel like it isn't actually happening to them and feed into imposter syndrome. Difficulty with emotional regulation is a major indicator of ADHD and RSD only impacts this further with intense and overwhelming emotions. Individuals can become consumed, almost hyperfocused, on behaviour that they perceive to be rejection. Justice sensitivity is a feature of RSD, individuals are more attuned to justice for victims. It can be very distressing to experience but can also make very good advocates. RSD comes with very high standards that are usually impossible to achieve, impacting self-esteem. The fear of rejection can sometimes actually mean an individual with RSD will put up with a lot of bad behaviour before reprimanding someone, it can take a lot for them to see the ‘bad' in people. Genetics and the brain's structure are thought to be the biggest cause and indicator of RSD. BEST MOMENTS "For people with RSD, these universal life experiences are much more severe than for neurotypical individuals” “For me when I'm in conversation with someone my main objective is how do I agree with this person which is so annoying because I'm never going to agree with everybody” “The RSD is so strong, sometimes at its strongest just because you are alone” “Then you have a whole family of people who are always seriously second-guessing themselves”CONTACT METHODwww.instagram.com/aniesabblore/           www.instagram.com/sensationalkidstherapyuk/    www.facebook.com/sensationalkidslondon ABOUT THE HOST Aniesa completed her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. I get bold and honest in this episode as I challenge “expert” opinion on Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). And honestly, I'm scared you're going to reject me for it. Most of us adults living with ADHD have many experiences from childhood onwards of being rejected due to our neurodivergence. We've grown up in families and systems that have indeed rejected us. OF COURSE this means that we're more sensitive to rejection. But I reject the idea that our ADHD itself is the genetic and neurological CAUSE of our rejection issues. No. Growing up in a world that constantly rejects us is the cause of our rejection issues. Yet there is one published ADHD expert who claims that RSD is genetic to those with ADHD and that the ONLY treatment is medication. He says that "psychotherapy does little to help" those with rejection issues.Well, I reject these statements as they lack the following:Any evidence at allAny mention of other supportive researchAny anecdotal confirmation from real life adults living with ADHDRejection is real. Those of us with ADHD have experienced and do experience a lot of it. That doesn't mean we have genetic disorder giving us rejection sensitivity and that doesn't mean that only medication can help us improve our sensitivity.Thankfully I'm not the only one who feels this way. Take a look in the references below and make your own best judgment based on the existing research, your personal rejection experiences, and what you know about the ADHD community.Rejection sensitivity IS REAL, and most of us ADHDers experience it. But I reject the term RSD, and I wonder if you'd like to reject it, too? Be in community with kind, like-minded individuals living with ADHD and join my group coaching program, FOCUSED.Referenced Articles:RSD: The Feelings are Real but the Cause is All Wrong Dodson's Additude Mag Article on RSD Medical News Today: RSD is ControversialCome hang out with me on Instagram

As an adult with ADHD, Aniesa struggles with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). In this week's episode, she explains the symptoms and causes of RSD and how identifying it in young children will help them cope later. KEY TAKEAWAYS  In a nutshell, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is the fear of being rejected. The fear of rejection activates the same parts of the brain as physical pain. ADHD complicates the fear of rejection as it alters brain chemistry. Because of this, those with ADHD find it harder to process rejection. Teasing or being picked last for a team can trigger RSD in children with ADHD. Children will often act in one of two ways to deal with RSD. They will work extra hard to please people or avoid them altogether. RSD is hard to identify, especially in younger children who struggle to explain their feelings. Remember, "connection is everything". BEST MOMENTS  “As humans, we are social beings, we live in little groups, little packs, little tribes, and we generally are hard-wired to fit in, to belong. And we stick together in groups because that's what makes us stronger. And, because of that, the thought of being rejected, of being outcast, is very scary.” “They can either cope with the trauma of the RSD one of two ways: they can try extra hard to please people and not get rejected, or completely start avoiding those anxiety-provoking situations.” CONTACT METHODwww.instagram.com/aniesabblore/           www.instagram.com/sensationalkidstherapyuk/    www.facebook.com/sensationalkidslondon ABOUT THE HOST Aniesa completed her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. ADHD rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) can feel like the world is coming to an end when we feel rejected, criticized (or self-criticism), or teased by family, co-workers, or friends. Most of the time it's our own negative self talk and self loathing that is activated when we are given feedback (constructive or otherwise) from our boss, coworkers, and loved ones. It can (innocently) take us down and get us stuck in emotional quick sand (albeit temporarily) as most people don't understand how much effort it takes for an ADHD'r to get to school, work, and most importantly get the day started. Once we understand what our overwhelmed thinking is really telling the less it will sabotage our piece of mind, and most importantly, our productivity during the day.

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria or RSD is an overwhelming emotional sensation that a person may experience in response to an actual or perceived rejection or criticism. It is a serious condition that can result in low mood and self-esteem and is not a person being overly sensitive. Kids and teens with AHDH are much more likely to experience RSD than kids with typical brain types. ADHD kids are very emotional, sensitive, and aware of the feelings of others and their own feelings. Being aware of the signs of RSD and understanding it's cause will empower you to help your kid through it by giving you knowledge and tools you need to assist them through managing it. Be your child's advocate. They need you!

It is painful, extremely stressful and produces anxiety nearly all the time. It is a neurological condition that can be helped with medication but the time it takes to be diagnosed and learn how to help ourselves deal with rejection is still very difficult. Part 2 of our Valentine's Day special - we talk about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) and how it specifically shows up in relationships! Highlights of Episode Eight: Recap of RSD: common in people with ADHD, and experts suggest that shame/RSD should be considered as part of ADHD diagnostic criteria. LeAnn shares her experience of how RSD shows up in relationships as fear of being rejected and feelings of shame and incompetence. Suz shares that her RSD shows up as jealousy and untrusting/fear of being duped. Hyper-vigilance often leads us to go down a rabbit hole of mistrust as a result of forming trauma bond attachments with our romantic partners; we unconsciously seek out people who reinforce traumatic experiences we have had previously. Finding ways to distance our thoughts and emotions from situations to separate fact from fiction can help when we are feeling upset; this helps to uncover the meaning we attach to situations. When do we go to others to communicate feelings/issues, and when do we do the work within ourselves first? Emotional flooding and releasing the dam of emotions; how to balance our emotions with others. Fear of rejection and determining safety in relationships, how our trauma response can miss red flags and erode trust within ourselves. How does the trademark ADHD symptom of impulsivity show up in relationships? We discuss our terrible reckless dating decisions and other impulsive choices. Healing the abandonment wound and finding safety and security within ourselves, versus seeking validation externally. We can always improve ourselves and change unhealthy patterns to form healthier relationships; the more self-aware we are, the easier it is to change our habits. Forming healthy relationships with others: doing the work ourselves and breaking codependency; not putting our “shit” on others with the expectation that they need to fix us. Episode 11: Amanda Pye. “With RSD, you get the sense that people are rejecting you even when they're not. And even when there's not really a realistic reason for you to think that, it gets put into your head. I thought everybody else was rejecting me or didn't like me and I wasn't important to those people. And then when I learned what RSD was, I went: Oh, no, that's not them. They haven't done this. I've done it.” Amanda lives with her family in Ault, CO, and she is the owner of Saint Paulia bath and skin care products. Amanda is one of those moms whose son was diagnosed years ago as a child with ADHD but it took her much longer to put the pieces together to get herself diagnosed. In fact, Amanda's mother was diagnosed with ADHD after she was being tested to a form of narcolepsy and fatigue — pretty much the opposite of the stereotypical hyperactive little boy — that Amanda finally started to think this was something she might have, as well. I love Amanda's insights into Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). It's something I've spoken about with other guests, but she gets into it a bit more in terms of how misleading our internal monologue can be when it comes to relationships. And, I pepper her with questions about her line of soaps and dry shampoos and how she got into the business of skin care for the clamping and RV set. I will also add that after this interview, I went to Amanda's website and ordered myself some soap and dry shampoo and her lotion sticks and I'm in love with them. I have very dry, very sensitive skin and the soap is one of the best I've ever tried. As someone who hates having cream on my hands and in between my fingers and hates how it makes my hands all clammy and slimy for the rest of the day, I'm in love with the body sticks. They look like basically giant lip balm tubes — and I can use them as moisturizer on my face and body and it's the best thing ever! I haven't seen anything else like this on the market, so I wanted to make sure to put in a plug for this awesome product! OK, I hope enjoy this episode!
