From where did J.R.R. Tolkien get his ideas for the world of Middle Earth? For millions of readers, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are more than just fantasy fiction. Their rich mix of sacred mythology and archetypal saga stories draw deeply into history and legend and profoundly resonate with universal human experience. As with most things, Matt Lewis is determined to claim Middle Earth was inspired by the medieval period, with the help of today's guest, Tolkien scholar Dr. Christopher Snyder.MORE:BeowulfListen on AppleListen on SpotifyCzech Braveheart: Jan ŽižkaListen on AppleListen on SpotifyGone Medieval is presented by Matt Lewis. The Vandals have gone down in history as the barbarians who helped bring down the Western Roman Empire. Their name became synonymous with violence and destruction, but who were they really? In this episode, Tristan Hughes is joined by Professor Andy Merrills to uncover the real story of the Vandals. From their migration across Europe to the conquest of Carthage, they explore how the Vandals emerged as a formidable power at the heart of Rome's final crisis; what archaeology reveals about their rule, and whether the Vandals were really as destructive as their reputation suggests.MOREThe Goths:Listen on AppleListen on Spotify The Franks:Listen on AppleListen on Spotify Presented by Tristan Hughes. The Magdalene Laundries existed throughout Ireland up until the late 20th century. Women and young girls were sent to these institutions that were run by orders of nuns. They were told they could not leave, and were forced to work - all because they were perceived to be ‘fallen' and in need of salvation, fixing. It is a truly dark and complex history we are only now beginning to really peel back the layers on.To guide us today we have Dr. Louise Brangan of the LSE on the show. Her newest work is titled “The Fallen: The Lost Girls of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries and a Legacy of Silence.”This episode was edited by Anna Brant. Produced by Tomos Delargy and McKenna Fernandez. This week, Julian and Trace imagine a world where gravity vanishes for ten seconds every day. There, they discover that humanity would have a lot more to worry about than a few floating tchotchkes. True weightlessness means the slightest movement could send you drifting across a room trapped in mid-air only to crash back down again when gravity returns. The guys think about how society and nature might adapt to this daily gravity outage and (of course) detour into the surprisingly persistent rumor that solar eclipses affect gravity, proving that even a completely absurd scenario can lead to some very real physics.QUESTIONSJulian: "If gravity turned off for 10 seconds once a day, how would society adapt?" from SarahDo you have an absurd question? For twenty-five years, exorcists have been sending a New York psychiatrist the cases they can't explain, and they chose him because they expected him to say no.==========HOUR ONE: Different peoples build their identity around different facets of their culture: the Italians around their food, the Greeks around their architecture, America around expanding waistlines. The Isle of Man, however, has pinned its identity today on low tax rates, motorcycle races and, oh yes… mermaids and fairies. (Catching Mermaids on Man) *** Would you be willing to eat your meals off the chest of a corpse, in the process, taking on their sins as your own? That's the gruesome job of a sin eater – and there were people willing to do it even into twentieth-century. (Would You Become a Sin Eater?) *** Dr Richard Gallagher is a New York psychiatrist and a psychiatric professor. He has spent twenty-five years viewing exorcisms – and he says 'fallen angels' target the devout AND those who've meddled with the occult. He says it outright – being possessed by a demon can and does happen, and he has seen it all too often. (Psychiatrist Says Demonic Possession Is Real) *** UK homeowners believe their homes are haunted and want to rid themselves of them, while Americans don't care if a house is haunted so long as it has a swimming pool! (Ghostly Homes And Ghost-Loving Buyers)==========HOUR TWO: Investigators noted the hair on the alleged victim's arms was singed, and the skin burned. The grass where he claimed to have had the encounter was also scorched. Did this scoutmaster and the boys with him truly experience a real UFO sighting in 1952, or was it all a hoax? (The Scouts and the UFO) *** An atheist tells his story about being possessed by demons... or maybe he wasn't. (I Thought I Was Possessed By The Devil) *** Is the Thunderbird real or myth? Most would say it is myth – or if it was real, it's now extinct. But then how do you explain sightings of the massive airborne creature as recently as 2018? (The Giant Thunderbird Lives) *** Sometimes, the darkness of night can hide frightening secrets. Especially if you are alone. (You'll Never Guess What Happened While You Were Asleep)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Robert Ressler came up against a lot of resistance, but his dedicated focus on the minds and motives of serial murderers created what we know today as criminal profiling. (The Man Who Created Criminal Profiling) *** An atheist tells his story about being possessed by demons... or maybe he wasn't. Today we're delving back into the After Dark vaults to revisit our classic episode on the death of the short-lived Tudor queen. In 1540 Henry VIII was getting old, and his eyes turned to teenager Catherine Howard. He fell hard and fast for Catherine - his "rose without a thorn" - but when he found out about her past, all hell broke loose.Amidst all the panic and confusion, who was this young woman who rose to be queen? Why did Henry VIII want her killed? A rubber ball. A stone court. And a sport where the stakes could be life and death. For more than 2,000 years, Mesoamerican peoples played a remarkable ballgame that became far more than entertainment; across the Maya world, it became a spectacle and a ceremony with religion, politics and power at it's heart.Today, Tristan Hughes is joined by archaeologist Ed Barnhart to uncover the oldest sporting tradition in the ancient Americas. Together they discover how the Maya ballgame was played, why it became so important, and whether the most chilling aspect of its reputation was actually true: did the losers really face sacrifice?MOREChichén ItzáListen on AppleListen on Spotify The Maya CollapseListen on AppleListen on Spotify The Ancients is now on YouTube!
