In the Jewish world, perhaps the quintessential case of this is the challenge of being the scion of a prominent rabbinic family (what some might call a “dynasty”). In this episode we discuss:How did family, friends, and congregants react to Joshua leaving the family pulpit? How can children find agency amid family expectations? How do leaders of Jewish institutions manage the most foundational Jewish institution: the family? Tune in to hear a conversation about how we can grapple wisely with professional divergence across generations.Interview begins at 12:53.Rabbi Dr. Haskel Lookstein is the Rabbi Emeritus of Kehilath Jeshurun in Manhattan, where he served most of his entire rabbinic career. He was also the principal of the Ramaz School from 1966 through 2015. R. Lookstein has been highly involved in leadership in the Jewish community for decades. He serves as the Joseph H. Lookstein Professor of Homiletics at Yeshiva University, where he has taught since 1979. He also serves as a Vice President of the Bet Din of America. Rabbi Joshua Lookstein is the Associate Head of School at the Ramaz School. Rabbi Lookstein previously served as the Head of School at Westchester Day School and a Major Gifts Officer at UJA-Federation of New York, and as Executive Director of the S. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: About my job: GiveWell Philanthropy Advisor, published by maggie.lloydhauser on September 13, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Overview I've been a Philanthropy Advisor at GiveWell for two years. This role is a better job for me than I thought I could find, and GiveWell is a better workplace than I knew existed. I'm often asked what a typical day in my role is like. Because my day to day is (delightfully) varied, I'll instead share what a typical month looks like as a Philanthropy Advisor. I'll also share some thoughts on my pathway to this role and its impact on GiveWell's work. A GiveWell Philanthropy Advisor is best compared to a Major Gifts Officer at other institutions, though there are some key differences. Big-picture, my role is to fundraise for our top charities as well as for non-top charity grants (such as those funded from our All Grants Fund) that may align with a specific donor's priorities. I primarily do this by maintaining relationships with a portfolio of donors. Unlike my preconceived notion of what fundraising entailed, my job does not require cold outreach or making awkward asks of existing donors. Instead, I try to get to know my donors, learning about what motivates them in their giving, helping them stay up to date with our research, sharing organizational updates, and occasionally presenting them with giving opportunities that seem strongly aligned with their philanthropic goals and interests. When I accepted this role, I worried that it would require me to be interpersonally disingenuous or that I'd have to make funding opportunities seem like surer bets than they really are; I've been delighted to find that our donors are genuinely easy to connect with and that GiveWell's values of transparency and truth-seeking translate to extreme honesty with donors about the risks and uncertainties of different grants. The job In a typical month, my responsibilities break down as follows: Communication with donors: In a typical month, I'm likely to send an update to each of the donors I know. This is often part of a natural ongoing conversation, but if I'm not specifically in touch with a donor already, I might reach out with an interesting article, share an impact report for their most recent gift, or get their feedback on some of our work. I also answer inbound donor questions from people seeking GiveWell's expertise and have a lot of calls with donors (over 100 per year). The volume of donor calls I have in a typical month varies greatly, clustering at the end of the year when many donors have questions about our work as they make annual giving decisions. These calls range from in-depth research conversations to logistical conversations about estate planning or giving mechanics to intense conversations about long-term philanthropic and financial goals and challenges. As relationships grow, we might also have more personal calls to catch up. Following GiveWell's research: In order to keep donors informed about our work, I have to stay up to date with it myself! I spend a lot of time listening in on research meetings, reading research documents for various grants, and asking our researchers questions about the specifics of different programs. A donor call can go in any direction - it's not uncommon for a donor to ask about a research decision we made years before my tenure at GiveWell began or about our position on a research area we have yet to publish public materials on - so keeping abreast of our research is a core component of the job. Depending on my workload, I might also lead the process of drafting a grant proposal. This requires a deep dive into the supporting documents for a specific grant and then condensing a lot of technical materials into a donor-facing format that highlights the intervention, considers the benefits, risks, and unce...

If you follow me on instagram @devdebrief, you saw that I went out to Annapolis in March. There, I met the US Navy development team and learned about their approach to fundraising. Mike Hoffman is an amazing leader who is growing programs, posting new positions, and argues teams are best built in person. Mike joined the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation in March 2013 and currently serves on the Foundation's senior leadership team as the Vice President, Development. Mike began his tenure at Navy as a Major Gifts Officer and grew into a series of roles with increasing responsibility before taking the VP position last year. As the Naval Academy Foundation builds out a team in anticipation of their next campaign, Mike will lead a staff of 15 on the Development team, which includes the Regional Development program, which is comprised of the organization's major gifts and high-end leadership annual giving initiatives, and the Planned Giving program. In his role, he also works closely with the Foundation's EVP, Board of Directors and other organizational leaders to play a central role in campaign planning and execution. Additionally, Mike manages a portfolio of top donors across the country with a focus on principal gifts. Since 2004, Mike has worked in education at both the independent school and higher education levels, with most of that experience in development positions. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mike was at Johns Hopkins University in their Regional and International Programs development office. Mike graduated from Loyola University Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He lives in Annapolis with his wife and three children. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/devdebrief/support

How can we elevate women by connecting and engaging with each other and holding ourselves accountable to our intentions? How can companies who want to attract and retain top talent do the same? I had a great time talking with my guest today, Tiffany Dufu, about her mission to support and elevate women. Tiffany shares her personal story and the mantra her mother used to tell her every day that she hopes to whisper into other women's ears. We discuss The Cru's mission and business model - and how they help women and companies achieve success through support, connection, and accountability. We also talk about why connection is so important to achieving goals (what The Cru calls intentions) and why empathy ensures successful engagement.Tiffany shares how the pandemic has affected women's career goals and why employers and leaders need to understand this new reality and respond accordingly. And she shares 3 tips for connecting across diverse backgrounds that could transform the way your teams get work done. Key Takeaways:If you want something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before. Women in the middle (whatever middle means for you in your life) tend to be looking for meaning, advancement, and integration. Limiting choices for women also limits choices for men, which then also trickles down and affects the children in the home. The intention of “finding a new job” doesn't mean leaving an organization. Leaders and employers need to bet on their teams, especially their women, and make clear the opportunities that they have in the organization, within and without their teams. I wish more fundraising professionals were having these types of conversions; perhaps the current climate is encouraging more of us to do so. Today, Edward and I wrestled with the questions regarding the motives behind why we would meet with one donor over another and whether our intent can be about more than just money. For example, what does the overall process look like to ensure that we are engaging with donors outside the status quo? Should our metrics evolve to encourage fundraising professionals to explore beyond the opportunities that are highly efficient, predictable and ensure our sense of control? I appreciated that Edward is asking hard questions without insisting on having all the answers. I was very encouraged to hear that Edward desires more thoughtful, intentional practices and more exploratory work that affords meaningful engagement for those on both sides of the charitable gift. Edward is a 2006 graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. Now working in the business school at Auburn, He previously served as the Major Gifts Officer for the Auburn University Office of Inclusion and Diversity. As always, we are grateful to OneCause for being our podcast sponsor. #responsivefundraising #unpredictable
www.greenheffafarms.comifundwomen.com/projects/leveling-the-planting-field.Clarenda "Farmer Cee" Stanley is a fifth-generation farmer, originally from Annie Manie, Alabama. She did not set out in life to follow on her family's agrarian path. But in 2017, she found herself returning to her roots as the CEO of Green Heffa Farms (GHF), a medicinal plant and hemp farm in Liberty, NC. As one of the first black women to be licensed in North Carolina, she was selected as the 2019 Featured Farmer for Hemp History Week, the nation's largest grassroots campaign for the federal legalization of industrial hemp. She has been featured in more than 200 national and international publications, including April’s Oprah O Magazine, and is a well-sought after speaker at national conferences. An award-winning fundraising and marketing professional, Cee is currently a senior principal gifts officer at The Nature Conservancy's World Office. She is the first black American to hold this title at the world's largest environmental organization. In this role, Cee manages a global portfolio of high net worth donors. She also recently assumed leadership for developing the organization's first philanthropic inclusion program, strategically helping the organization broaden its donor constituency to achieve its conservation goals. Previously Cee worked as VP for Advancement at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, Director of Development and Communications for the Lucy Daniels Foundation and was a Major Gifts Officer at NC Central University. Green Heffa Farms is one of very few black-owned farms in Chatham County and perhaps the only one growing hemp that is led by a black woman. Transitioning to organic, it will also be another rarity - a minority woman owned USDA certified organic farm. The farm is committed to best practices in regenerative agriculture. It seeks to create a learning lab where aspiring and current farmers can gain critical skills in boutique hemp and medicinal plant cultivation, production, and needed business skills. GHF hopes to increase the number of socially and ecologically conscious farmers, with a focus on underrepresented populations. Cee has earned a bachelors in marketing from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a masters degree in education from Troy University. In 2016, she selected by her peers as the 2016 Association for Fundraising Professionals, Triangle Chapter Fundraiser of the Year and in 2017, received the C-Suite Award for Nonprofit Leadership. Cee has also earned the coveted Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation.

This week's episode is a slightly different format than some of our others. Brighde Reed and I were talking prior to the coming on the podcast about her vegan travel company. I had asked her if they ever did yoga on their vacations. While it wasn't in the original itinerary a spontaneous yoga class did occur. One of their longtime clients, Paula Tharp is a yoga teacher and vegan activist. This conversation is about community, Rwanda, yoga and vegan activism.Brighde Reed is one of the co-founders of World Vegan Travel. She's a passionate vegan and activist with extensive travel, education, cooking and tour leading experience. Brighde (alongside her partner Seb) have mixed all these skills and experience together to create a travel company that takes vegans (and the vegan-curious) on incredible tours in specially selected locations around the world. World Vegan Travel is a little different than other vegan tour companies. Our tours are about doing it in style! We want our travelers to have an unforgettable luxury experience and not to be short-changed in terms of food and the activities they participate in. We work tirelessly with local operators, hotels, and restaurants to make sure that the food and experiences we have are not only vegan but unforgettable... In a good way. When not traveling, Brighde likes to learn languages, work out, hike and do activism!Connect with Brighde:Website: worldvegantravel.comFacebook: @worldvegantravelYouTube: @worldvegantravelInstagram: @worldvegantravelPaula Tharp is a Seattle-based vegan, yoga practitioner & teacher, who finds purpose in connecting people with resources to create social change for a more compassionate world.
