On this episode of Dancing with the Bards, Brooke, Larry and a begrudging Ian are joined by Stephen as we delve into this Zoo Management Boardgame published by Feuerland Spiele and designed by Mathias Wigge.

Walker has yet to inform us what agenda the aliens are pursuing in Argentina during their relentless campaign of cow abduction. Do the alien overlords practise colonialism in the same way as their human counterparts? Do the inscrutable extraterrestrials differentiate between different humans, perhaps much as they differentiate between cows? Are their secret machinations behind the British East India Company as well? Walker, what are you hiding!01:54 AYURIS: Faiyum (Friedemann Friese, 2F-Spiele, 2020)Games Played Last Week:05:22 -Spire's End: Hildegard (Greg Favro, Favro Ventures, LLC., 2022)07:36 -Innovation (Carl Chudyk, Asmadi Games, 2010)07:44 -A Feast for Odin (Uwe Rosenberg, Feuerland Spiele, 2016)07:50 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)08:12 -Ankh: Gods of Egypt (Eric M. There was a time you could just stroll in a big box store in the United States and just buy a miniatures skirmish game that was actually pretty good. Sure, it didn't have analog movement or anything, but it used true line of sight and had amazing plastic terrain. So much plastic. Like, a whole lot. One the one hand, Hasbro says they're bringing HeroScape back, but on the other, ain't no way it's coming back the same as it was. They're going to bleed us dry for those little pre-painted dolls--even assuming they're still pre-painted, that is.Games Played Last Week:02:22 -My Father's Work (T.C. Walker yearns for a universal grammar, a sort of iconograhic Esperanto. That is a bridge too far for Mark, but they nonetheless find common ground on certain time terms and certain graphical conventions. They may be alone, of course, but they would rather that everyone deferred to their intuitions.01:17 AYURIS: The Castles of Tuscany (Stefan Feld, alea, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:17 -Unsettled (Marc Neidlinger & Tom Mattson, Orange Nebula, 2021)08:45 -Sniper Elite: The Board Game (Roger Tankersly & David Thompson, Rebellion Unplugged, 2022)12:48 -Hidden Leaders (Andreas Müller, Markus Müller, & Raphael Stocker, BFF Games, 2022)15:18 -For Science! After a purgatorial thirteen months, Mark will be released from his Cain-like wanderings and allowed to repatriate to Kingston where he will get to be home. He figures that if Immanuel Kant got to be world famous before the age of global communications without leaving a 50 kilometer radius of his hometown, he has more than paid his dues. If anyone wants him to attend a function in the future, they had best plan on getting married and/or dying in close proximity to Mark's home.01:43 AYURIS: Lost Ruins of Arnak (Elwen & Mín, CGE, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:51 -Foundations of Rome (Emerson Matsuuichi, Arcane Wonders, 2022)07:05 -Golem (Flaminia Brasini, Virginio Gigli, & Simone Luciani, Cranio Creations, 2021)10:56 -Token Terrors: Battlegrounds (John de Campos & Phillip Doccolo, Terrible Games, 2020)16:50 -Switch & Signal (David Thompson, KOSMOS, 2020)19:13 -Unsettled (Marc Neidlinger & Tom Mattson, Orange Nebula, 2021)27:09 -Ark Nova (Mathias Wigge, Feuerland Spiele, 2021)28:21 -The Bridges of Shangri-La (Leo Colovini, Uberplay, 2003)32:09 -Merchants of the Dark Road (Brian Suhre, Elf Creek Games, 2022)36:09 -Paper Tales (Masato Uesugi, Stronghold, 2017)38:31 -Memoir '44 (Richard Borg, Days of Wonder, 2004)41:52 -Iwari (Michael Schacht, ThunderGlyph Games, 2020)News (and why it doesn't matter):44:51 Ghost Adventure: spinning, grabbing, tilting! 45:57 Uwe Rosenberg's Atiwa (Ghana)47:42 Idavoll for Nidavellir: giants, Aesir, and more49:33 Terra Mystica minus tracks becomes Terra Nova?50:24 Terraforming Mars: Dice Game

We received a number of questions of a more personal nature which we have decided not to address. This is only partially out of a sense of privacy. Rather, we are firmly of the editorial position that the show is best when we focus on games, rather than the personal details of the hosts. We pride ourselves in only wasting a certain amount of your valuable time, and were we to indulge in more personal digressions that could easily balloon the show well beyond the limits of absurdity. 01:08 AYURIS: Flotilla (J.B. Yes, we are but slaves to the new releases, which is why we are reviewing a fifteen-year-old game. "But that's impossible!" you reply, "No one was alive back then!" Records are scant, but there is a rich oral tradition that people have been playing games at least since the release of Nirvana's Nevermind. Much art is discussed this week, from French Romantics, to pirate stuff, to conspiracist vision boards, to whatever Walker is doing when he uses clothespins on felt. Mark wonders whether he can justify leaving in dead air and calling it "bold use of negative space," but the deeper worry is that too many people would prefer the silence. One of the great tragic modern misapprehensions of history is the blanching of fascism. It seems that people can watch Attack on Titan and play with their space marines, and simply because there are no swastikas to be found they assume that there are no connections to fascistic ideology contained therein. This is one of the reasons why we so appreciate the humble cucumber sandwich--we would assert that its very fragility and delicacy evoke anti-fascism. Whether one ought to use butter or cream cheese is of great doctrinal import, of course, but we're not gonna get all dogmatic about it.01:47 AYURIS: Undaunted: Normandy (Trevor Benjamin & David Thompson, Osprey Games, 2019)Games Played Last Week:05:07 -Riftforce (Carlo Bortolini, 1 More Time Games, 2021)07:55 -Ark Nova (Mathias Wigge, Feuerland Spiele, 2021)10:21 -1846: The Race for the Midwest (Thomas Lehmann, GMT Games, 2005)20:33 -Railroad Tycoon/Railways of the World (Glenn Drover & Martin Wallace, Eagle-Gryphon Games, 2005)22:20 -Llamaland (Phil Walker-Harding, Lookout Games, 2021)24:53 -Res Arcana: Perlae Imperii (Thomas Lehmann, Sand Castle Games, 2021)27:49 -Faiyum (Friedemann Friese, 2F-Spiele, 2020)30:08 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)31:03 -Dinosaur World (Brian Lewis, David McGregor, & Marissa Misura, Pandasaurus Games, 2021)36:28 -Too Many Bones (Adam & Josh Carlson, Chip Theory Games, 2017)40:11 -Sentinels of the Multiverse (Christopher Badell, Paul Bender, & Adam Rebottaro, Greater Than Games, 2011)42:26 -Ankh: Gods of Egypt (Eric M. We are dangerously approaching peak culture here on SVWAG. In addition to Masterpiece Theatre, we have the return of the pie ranking system, plus now music tie-ins for Arkhipov Day. If Walker doesn't want Mark to speak to excess, he really shouldn't be teeing him up by asking about Macross. Or Robotech either, because the difference thereto is a whole discussion unto itself. Of course, Walker is an accomplished troll, willing to return to any subject once raised. Mark has repeatedly been exhorted to not feed trolls, but really, that's just blaming the victim. At this point it's mostly just mutual trolling, like an ouroboros of nonsense. I think SVWAG might have a new tagline.01:39 AYRUIS: Rurik: Dawn of Kiev (Stan Kordonskiy, PieceKeeper Games, 2019)Games Played Last Week:03:46 -51st State: Master Set--Moloch (Joanna Kijanka, Portal Games, 2021)08:13 -Gaia Project (Jens Drögemüller & Helge Ostertag, Feuerland Spiele, 2017)10:38 -Beyond the Sun (Dennis K. It is the nature of the Walker who cries wolf that if he repeats the claim often and consistently enough, it might come true eventually. Despite the unrelenting constancy of Chinese New Year, some games do actually get produced--just only after they have emerged from their purgatorial delay in the never-ending holiday. So it is with Tidal Blades; after claims of "any day now" for years, it finally arrived, like some unwieldy piece of oversized deluxe... well... is it flotsam or jetsam? We must review it to find out. We sometimes don't understand the appeal of food-based games, friends and neighbours. To be sure, we adore Food Chain Magnate, but that is not parasitic upon our sincere appreciation of (say) lemonade and pizza. We're using "culture" pretty broadly, here--the SVWAG staff anthropologist is out with the flu, so there's only so much we can do. We're ready to accept some degree of cultural variance, but we don't endorse cultural relativism as a moral theory; our staff ethicist is still very much at his post. "Money makes the world go 'round" is a common saying decried by most astronomers and physicists, who instead stubbornly maintain that it is due to some invisible thing that can't even qualify for a credit card. "More money than God" is also a strange phrasing, insofar as I believe the theological consensus (ranging from the Abrahamic faiths all the way to Pastafarianism) is that God does not hold assets in the standard sense. Then again, I've never seen His portfolio. You do you, Walker always says, except he almost never does. Mark always says smoke 'em if you got 'em, despite his never uttering those words and frankly not knowing what they mean. He tried smoking once and didn't enjoy it. Why care about such petty things as truth or data when it feels consistent with a narrative you're peddling? Shelley and I take on 2 titles that start with F, but vary markedly in their play and fun value! Fuji by Wolfgang Warsch from Feuerland Spiele had us running (unsuccessfully) from Fuji's volcanic eruption...and not enjoying the experience. and Futuropia by Friedemann Friese from Stronghold Games has us working to create a utopian condominium experience where food and energy are provided by robots doing the work so we no longer have to! Fun planning from the guy who loves green.
Sometimes categories are useful taxonomical tools, and sometimes they are so blunt as to be confusing and unhelpful. What gets parsed as "worker placement" can get downright murky at times. To Walker, though, the world is clear and simple. Tolstoy tells us that "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Walker has a modified view--all fun games are fun and thus good and interchangeable, and all unfun games are bad and thus the same. What's in a name? Well, if the game is KeyForge, the name is pretty much the entire game. As we have learned from bots in the past, set an algorithm loose on the internet and it'll probably come back as a racist misogynist troll. Intro & Outro We are one von Vexento - https://soundcloud.com/vexento/tracks

Mark and Walker switch roles this week in a stunning reversal. Walker avoids telling Mark to "get good," but it's a close thing only narrowly avoided. In Walker's defense, Mark really should git gud--as has been noted by many a scholar and physician. They discuss the redevelopment of Terra Mystica called Gaia Project, and then they generalize to how publishers sometimes mess up new editions of their games. Mark's sanity is questioned throughout; probably a sound policy.Games Played Last Week:-Stone Age 1m17s (Bernd Brunnhofer, Hans im Gluck, 2008)-Corporate America 3m44s (Teale Fristoe, Nothing Sacred Games, 2013)-Scythe: The Wind Gambit 8m12s (Kai Starck & Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2017)-Mythic Battles: Pantheon 9m55s (Eric Bourlett & Benoit Vogt, Monolith, 2017) -Galaxy Trucker 14m26s (Vlaada Chvatil, Czech Games Edition, 2007)News (and why it doesn't matter):-Asmodee Buys Something 18m01s-ShipNaked and Dan Yarrington's Run-in with Phil Eklund 18m20sFeature Game: Gaia Project 22m06s (Jens Drögemüller & Helge Ostertag, Feuerland Spiele, 2017) Topic: Reskins & Second Editions 45m40s

And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Huey that if Walker moves my games one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Dewey too, because Walker's moved my games four times already this year, and they used to be over by the window, and they could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, Walker switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if Walker takes my stapler then I'll set the studio on fire...01:38 AYURIS: Witchstone (Martino Chiacchiera & Reiner Knizia, R&R Games, 2021)Games Played Last Week:04:00 -Skytear Horde (Giacomo Neri and Riccardo Neri, Skytear Games, 2023)05:54 -Wizards of the Grimoire (Cole Banning and Joe Banning, Grimoire Games, 2022)09:15 -Codenames (Vlaada Chvátil, CGE, 2015)14:05 -Pala (Jeffrey D.
