554. Part 2 of our interview of Derby Gisclair about his newest book, New Orleans Steamboat Stories – The Brief Lives of Mississippi Riverboats. "Steamboats shaped America's future, its economy, and its culture while expanding trade and expanding the country's footprint into new territories. This economic expansion was not limited to New Orleans, but also to Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Memphis, Louisville, Nashville, St. Paul, Kansas City, and Chattanooga. A round trip voyage from Pittsburgh to New Orleans that once took six months could now be accomplished in forty-five days. At the same time steamboats made it possible to circulate and disseminate the news and the mail, to spread the various immigrant cultures, food, and music. New Orleans Steamboat Stories contains stories of a handful of the different steamboats and the people who lived and worked on the Western rivers. They are brief in nature as the average life of a steamboat was generally short. But their impact culturally and commercially, esthetically and economically, made a lasting impact on the development of America" (Jefferson Parish). This week in Louisiana history. A Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck is for patients who have an extreme amount of loose abdominal skin after weight loss. It removes more skin than a regular Tummy Tuck. Fleur-de-lis is French for water lily. It refers to the pattern of skin excision used in a Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck, which leaves a vertical and horizontal scar. The horizontal cut removes the excess skin from the upper and lower abdomen. The vertical cut removes the excess skin from the middle. When I bring the skin together and suture it closed, it creates a narrower waistline. The operation takes four to six hours. If you're thinking about a Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck, you may wonder what recovery is like. I review this in detail in this podcast episode. Unlocked for all listeners after one year for patrons only: -about 10 ft. long -made in France, ca. 1540s -lost in shipwreck, ca. 1562-5 -located on bottom of the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Canaveral We examine the mysteries surrounding a French bronze cannon recently discovered on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean near Florida, amidst the wreckage of an unidentified sixteenth-century fleet. The cannon and other artifacts are rare, priceless remnants of French Protestants’ ill-fated attempts to colonize North America before the Spanish, and their discovery sparked a heated international legal dispute. The mysterious shipwreck gives us a window into a rare moment when Europe’s vicious religious wars spilled over into the Americas. Wasn't the organization founded in England? Don't laugh; that's a question we've gotten before, and probably will again. At some point, a curious Scout — or their parent — will want to know just why Scouting the world over uses the symbol that it does. Ken and Colin take a look at the history of the fleur-de-lis symbol, from ancient history to its adoption, by Baden-Powell, as the symbol of the Scouting movement.  Though she humbly downplays it in the episode, Lizzie Wann was an integral part in bringing the slam poetry scene to San Diego it in the late 90s /early 2000s. She also was one of the first people to start a series of house concerts with local acoustic acts-- an event that paved the way for many similar series (some of which are still active today). Without Lizzie Wann, it’s hard to say what these scenes in San Diego would look like today. Ask around, you’ll find the same answer: she was a key member in making it all happen. She was in SD during the peek of its coffee house music scene, which gave her the perfect opportunity to start the Live Out Loud Series.  Aside from reading some heart-wrenching poems, Lizzie talks about the spark that initially drove her to launch the literary and music projects that she did as well as where her relationships with poetry and music stand today. Though she’s not necessary rockin’ poetry slams (Lizzie was on the Laguna Beach team in 1999), she makes an effort to support what she essentially helped to create. Years later, she takes comfort in seeing some familiar faces still out there, and enjoys hearing fresh new talent carry on a continuingly thriving scene. MUSIC: The music featured in this episode is “Fleur De Lis” by Berkley Hart, the folk duo staple of the house concerts Lizzie used to put on. Subscribe, download, and rate!
