554. Part 2 of our interview of Derby Gisclair about his newest book, New Orleans Steamboat Stories – The Brief Lives of Mississippi Riverboats. "Steamboats shaped America's future, its economy, and its culture while expanding trade and expanding the country's footprint into new territories. This economic expansion was not limited to New Orleans, but also to Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Memphis, Louisville, Nashville, St. Paul, Kansas City, and Chattanooga. A round trip voyage from Pittsburgh to New Orleans that once took six months could now be accomplished in forty-five days. At the same time steamboats made it possible to circulate and disseminate the news and the mail, to spread the various immigrant cultures, food, and music. New Orleans Steamboat Stories contains stories of a handful of the different steamboats and the people who lived and worked on the Western rivers. They are brief in nature as the average life of a steamboat was generally short. But their impact culturally and commercially, esthetically and economically, made a lasting impact on the development of America" (Jefferson Parish). This week in Louisiana history. To kick it off right, we wanted to say "top of the mornin' to ye ''' but seeing as how that's just a silly Hollywood invention, we are instead going to say "A hundred thousand welcomes."    Before we get into the meat and potatoes of this episode, I reached out to a friend of ours, Katie, who's father is directly from Ireland. I asked her to see if he had any sort of creepy interactions over there. She also reached out to a cousin who lives over there and I received this message, this morning:   Oh boy I hit the jackpot reaching out to my cousins in Ireland I had no idea about this but here's her message.    Ohhh some that I've heard, well as it happens

To keep this podcast going, I need your help.Today, I am speaking with John Joyce, now John Heads up the Queensland Pedal Prix Super Series. Today, we will be chatting about the 2022 series and all of the great things that are ahead for the competition. It is nearly two years since the kids at my school have had a chance to race and I just can't wait for next year. I hope you enjoy this chat, I sure did. Thanks to John, for all he does for the competition!   About the Bridge Building Podcast “This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.” So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. I would like to invite you along to listen and learn, to be inspired by some of the sensational teachers I speak to on the “Bridge Building Podcast – from technology to the trades”   About the Podcast Host Stephen Anderson is a Design Technology, Trade Training and accidental Science teacher at a small high school 2 hours North West of Brisbane.   Over To You If you know someone who is doing something spectacular or just great fun in design and tech or in trade training, I would love to know about them. Sam interviews Jennifer Berkshire & Jack Schneider of the Have You Heard podcast about their book,  A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door: The Dismantling of Public Education and the Future of School.” Jack begins by giving a brief history on the origins of the anti-public education movement in Bary Goldwater’s 1964 presidential campaign, as a response, in part, to the civil rights movement. Jennifer explains how the right has already begun laying the groundwork for the total privatization of education through advocating for “funding students, not systems,” in which parents are given vouchers to decide how they want to educate their children. Then, they discuss how the Democratic Party has also contributed to the disintegration of public schools through commodifying education by placing more importance on standardized testing and introducing charter schools. Jennifer and Jack make the point that as important as the public education system is, it is not the solution to poverty that billionaires such as Bill Gates claim it is. This leaves the question, what is the goal of our public education system and how can we protect it from those trying to dismantle it?   And in the Fun Half: Mike Lindell promises Trump will be back in August, Bernie joins Amazon workers from the picket line in Alabama, John Joyce’s “Grinch Act,” the LAPD detains reporters during the Echo Park protests, what turned Emma and Matt into a lefties, Matt’s thoughts on the JFK assasination, who would win?

The Warnock and Ossoff victories in Georgia on the 5th were AMAZING. The mamas were sure this was a great sign for the future of America. They had no leadership because trump can barely lead himself to the bathroom much less lead an insurrection. So now we are at the 5 corners of: Inauguration, Sedition, Insurrection, The 25th Amendment, Impeachment, and imprisonment, Add in the alley of "pardon" which the spineless orange bastard is counting on. Growing up we all had a hero, to me that's John Joyce, he's my dad. He introduced me to football when I was younger, he took me to games & played football with me in garden when no one else would. Along with my mum he bought me my first football boots, my first strip and gave me a never ending love & passion for the game. Now that was something you couldn't buy! He helped me perfect my craft on & off the field, he also set the wheels in motion for 6, 8 or 10. So you will be wondering why it took so bloody long to record this episode & if your truly know him you will know the answer. He is a man of few words, I mean he will talk but doesn't tend to like doing so for long periods of time. So in a way I'm lucky that I get to share this episode with you. We cover his career to date - both playing & coaching. How it all began, again playing & coaching. Who he grew up supporting, following them across Europe. We touch on his heroes - which range from the likes of Davie Cooper, Willie Henderson, Jimmy Johnstone & of course his idol John Greig. He has a real passion & knowledge for the game it would have been a shame if I didn't get him on the podcast. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for listening! Dad, Coach, Hero.

Welcome back to another episode of Enduring Health with your host Dr Shan Hussain. In this episode, Shan talks with Ice Cold Chef John Joyce about his personal journey where he lost 3 stone in 6 months. Their conversation takes them from the origins of the Ice Cold Chef, to how his change in diet has dramatically helped Johns wife’s with her MS. John goes on to share some wonderful recipes which could help you too eat healthy over the Christmas period. Tune in now, to hear more.   Key Takeaways Where did Ice Cold Chef come from? Ten years ago my wife was diagnosed the MS, which meant that she no longer could cook. Because of this, my wife taught me to cook. I failed to make lasagne and we had a little argument so my wife then told me to get a cold beer out of the fridge. I then launched the twitter account and chose Ice Cold Chef as my handle. From those humble beginnings, that’s where the project came from. What Did You Learn From Your Wife? My wife's food was amazing so the standard of cooking I was used to was very high. I could only cook cheese on toast beforehand. I started with the slow cooker and then moving onto lasagne and soups. Over a few months in the Spring, my wife said that you were ok and could be left on my own. I felt like I had cracked it. What Are The Health Benefits of the Diet That You Are Cooking? Six months ago we were eating lots of bread, pasta, and other carbs. At that time I was diagnosed with prediabetes. Because of that, I needed to sort my diet out, to beat the diagnosis. That night I put a tweet out for recipes from some of my mentor chefs. From then I started on a low carb diet which has almost cured diabetes. It’s also really helped my wife's MS. For years we have had disturbed sleep every night, but with the low carb diet, we have had a good night’s sleep for over 200 continuous nights for the first time. Losing Three Stone In Weight In Six Months. Both my wife and I have lost 3 stone in six months by eating the low carb diet. We start each day with a smoothie and that keeps us going until lunch. At lunch we have leftovers. We have found that our plate sizes have shrunk dramatically and we don’t eat like we used to. The good fats we are eating mean we are fuller quicker. Which Symptoms Of Your Wifes MS Have Improved? The MS fatigue has reduced drastically, the night tremors have ended, the strength of her body core has now been improved. She can sit up now without the MS band which she has worn around her waist for years. Small things like she has movement in her right foot and the dry flaking skin has stopped. She is now the picture of health. What Is Your Advice In Approaching Christmas, Which Can Be An Unhealthy Time Of Year? It’s all about preparation, you have to prep ahead. You won’t be able to get to Christmas eve and get it all done then. I make my own chocolates using dark chocolate with almonds. I’m going to use celeriac instead of potato. Decide what you are going to eat beforehand and use a slow cooker to free up space in your oven. How Do You Make Green Cabbage Interesting? These simple steps can make your cabbage both healthy and really tasty. Remove the stalks. Pan over medium heat with extra virgin olive oil. Season this up with Basil, Oregano, and Coriander Add garlic and butter five minutes before the end. Maybe add some bacon a the end. What Would You Say To A Cynic? I do sometimes get some brutal opinions on social media. My answer is always that nothing has helped as much ten years as changing our diet. It’s taken 27 years to get the medicine to make the MS relapsing and remit and it’s going to take another 27 years to cure it. We had nothing to lose at this point, the cards had been dealt. There is nothing that we have done in the ten years previous that has changed things so drastically than the diet change in the last 6 months Can You Share A Simple Recipe? As a replacement for bread which is something that a lot of people crave when they give it up. Wraps can be a really great healthy replacement. Whisk together almond flour and one egg with grated parmesan Add Parsley, Basil and any other herb that you want to use. Add a teaspoon of flat-seed. Have your pan on medium heat and treat this like a pancake. Add some extra virgin oil. Add to the pan with some grated parmesan on top When there is air bubbles place the pan underneath the grill Then slide onto the plate when brown. You can make a batch together and place them in the freezer for a quick meal later. What Does the future hold? We have big plans for the website, bringing different experts on board such as a Mindfulness Coach, and other chefs. There will be lots more video content on the site to try and help others. Everything we do is trying to help others. Best Moments ‘I can cook anything now.’ ‘I lost 3 stones in 6 months.’ ‘My energy levels went through the roof.’ ‘My wife’s MS fatigue has drastically reduced.’ ‘Small changes in your diet can have huge improvements.’ ‘Simple as eating real foods.’ ‘Get your veg first on your plate, and make room for the other stuff.’ ‘I don’t boil any vegetables, only use the pan.’ ‘We use a positive mindset to have the ability to get off the hamsters wheel.’ ‘Give people a little tip to change their lives for the better.’ About the Host: Dr Shan Hussain is an author, general practitioner, health coach, wellness advisor and ambassador to the World Health Innovation Summit. It soon became apparent I would have to learn to cook as the progressive MS condition was taking hold. I had never cooked before, Bev had always done it and was exceptional at it, as we enjoyed foods from all around the world. That's when my lessons started in the home, Bev teaching me at weekends as I prepared meals for the coming week.   One Saturday afternoon I was trying to make a lasagne, it just wasn't happening for me, looking back now I know I wanted to achieve it quicker but couldn't I didn't have the knowledge. Bev and I had a disagreement over how it should be cooked. A lager and glass of wine later, we finished the lasagne that night and enjoyed the meal. At this time, Twitter had just started and I had the idea of updating the food I was cooking, and keeping in touch with the outside world to share my new found passion for cooking. Within a couple of weeks, professional chefs had picked up my tweets along with other restaurant/supplier contacts and then the real mentoring started. Chefs sending me knowledge and pictures of food to try, always pushing me out from my comfort zone and into a new area of cooking. The end result, being a greater control of our lives and food choices. It wasn't long after that many carers started to contact me about my meals and asking for advice. That's when Ice Cold Chef was born, a passion for the Ketogenic diet and my desire to share my meals which are simple and achievable by all of us. This November voters from the 10 counties in Pennsylvania's new 13th Congressional District have a choice between two political newcomers. A large portion of the district (old PA-9) has been in the grips of the Shuster name for many years, but recent primary election margins have become narrow and Representative Bill Shuster has decided his current term will be his last. John Joyce of Hollidaysburg, PA, flush with campaign funds and the backing of Shuster, emerged as the winner in a crowded Republican primary earlier this year. Our guest, Democrat, Brent Ottaway, also of Hollidaysburg is set to challenge him. Ottaway has been traveling all over the large district meeting voters. Recently, while in Chambersburg, he took the time to visit with us at the Progress Pod to share his views on the important issues facing our country.
