Episode SummaryIn an episode bubbling over with Disney history, Erin and Rachel dive into The Black Cauldron (1985), also known as, “the film that almost killed Disney animation.” Amid corporate restructuring, another animator's strike, and increasing competition at the box office, The Black Cauldron totally flopped. Erin and Rachel liked this film about as much as 1985 audiences did, and not just because of the misogyny and white-washed cast. Even innovative animation technology couldn't save the meandering script and annoying characters.Episode BibliographyBerman, T., & Rich, R. (Directors). (1985). The Black Cauldron [Film]. Michael is joined by Brendan O’Neill, editor of spiked and host of the Spiked Podcast, who writes that ‘the 70 million people who voted for Trump are revolting against the new elites and that we should listen.’ ‘Mr O’Neill writes, ‘So Joe Biden has won the highest popular vote in the history of the US. At the time of writing, more than 73 million people have voted for him. He has beaten the record set by Barack Obama who was swept to power on that famous wave of ‘HOPE’ and 69.5 million votes in 2008.’ ‘But here’s the thing: so has Donald Trump. Trump might trail Biden in the popular vote of 2020, but he, too, has beaten Obama’s 2008 record. Trump, at the time of writing, has 69.7 million votes. So he has won the second-highest popular vote in the history of the American republic. That is remarkable. Far more remarkable than Biden’s very impressive count.’ ‘Why? For one simple reason. Trump is the man we’re all meant to hate. He has been raged against ceaselessly by the cultural elites for the past four years. Hardly any of the American media backed him in 2020. Globalist institutions loathe him.’ ‘Academia, the media elites, the social-media oligarchies, the celebrity set and other hugely influential sectors have branded him a 21st-century Hitler and insisted that only a “white supremacist” could countenance voting for him. He’s the butt of every sniffy East Coast joke and the target of every fiery street protest. He’s the worst thing to happen to Western politics in decades, we’re told, by clever people, constantly.’ ‘And yet around 70 million Americans voted for him. The second-highest electoral bloc in the history of the US put their cross next to the name of a man who over the past four years has been turned by the political clerisy into the embodiment of evil.’ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A true disciple loves! Discipleship series #11 A true disciple LOVES! (It’s the energy room) By Pastor George Lehman   All I spoke about in this series from #1 to #10 will never be lived out successfully without LOVE. Luke 6:40 “A Disciple is not above his teacher but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”  One of the clear identification marks in a disciple’s life is the ability to love. Like seeds being sown, the result will be seen if it lands in good soil by the fruit it produces. If we took a poll of everyone’s life now and ask them, “Did you grow up with love?”, sadly the greater multitude would answer, “NO”. Growing up without love is its own form of suffering. Most of us are a product of a loveless society. “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” Mother Teresa We live in a world that longs for love – whether you’re - young or old, - single or married, - rich or poor, everyone wants to be loved and to know someone cares about us. Love cannot be held captive by our thoughts, emotions, fears or our outside limitations. Make no mistake about it:  LOVE is the number one need in everyone’s life. What happens when LOVE is in short supply?  People feel emptiness inside a space that must be filled with something. God designed this space to be filled with LOVE. “God is LOVE” In the absence of it, people will turn to a variety of habits, addictions and distractions to temporarily fill the empty space – whether it be money, sex, drugs, food, smoking, drinking, gambling – these things NEVER satisfy our need for love. The path to feeling whole again begins with knowing that you are loved by people but especially by your Creator. Just remember that you are - accepted, - approved of and - treasured by God. 1 John 4:10 (Amp) - In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loves us, and gave His Son as the payment for our sins. Sin separated us but LOVE drew us back. What is love?  The best definition I have ever found is in: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (Amp) - Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never *haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when other do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever truth wins out. If you love someone you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him. All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end, but love goes on forever. Haughty – Arrogant / Prideful No matter what your past was!! How unloved you may have been, since “The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” Romans 5:5 (NKJV) You are now able to love supernaturally! We cannot use our past as an excuse to live out our new saved lives by acting love-less. John 13:34-35 (Amp) - I give you a new commandment: That you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another. By this shall all (men) know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (if you keep on showing love among yourselves). Love brings unstoppable FREEDOM when we learn to love as God intended.  We cannot do it on our own – we need HIM. Unless we have His love in our hearts, there is no way we can love others – wholly, purely or adequately. 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 (Amp) - (THE KEY is) And may the Lord make you to increase and excel and overflow in love for one another and for all people, just as we also do for you, (You have to be a willing participant)13So that  He may strengthen and confirm and establish your hearts faultlessly pure and unblameable in holiness in the sight of our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) with all His saints (the holy and glorified people of God)! Amen, (so be it)!  #1  What does it mean to love God? Simply put, to love God is to obey Him.  Partial obedience is disobedience. John 14:15 (Amp) - If you (really) love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands. 1 John 5:3 (NKJV) – For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. The first four commandments are primarily directed at God, while the last six are directed at man. Proverbs 8:17 (Message) - I love those who love me; those who look for me find me. #2  What does it mean to “love yourself?” Loving God and accepting that He loves you are the foundation for loving yourself and for experiencing self-confidence and self-esteem in who you are and what you are. It’s not about being self-centered or having an ego. Proverbs 27:2 (Message) - Don’t call attention to yourself; let others do that for you. Having confidence in loving yourself will give you confidence to be inspired and not threatened by the success of others. You don’t become discouraged because you know who you are in Christ. When you love yourself, it includes self-discipline, taking responsibility and knowing it’s us who have a part to play in our success! #3  What does it mean to “love your neighbor?” Mark 12:30-31 (NIV) – 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31The second is this: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” The foundation to love your neighbor is comprised in two parts. A proper love of self. Hurting people hurt people. A desire to love others as Christ loved us. Loving your neighbor is treating them as you would like to be treated – stop majoring on the minors! - Focus on their strengths not their weaknesses - Focus on their positives not the Negatives - Focus on their success and not their failures. - Being an encouragement to them not a discouraging pain in the ....NECK Why does God command us to love other people?  I mean we have all been hurt, abused, ripped off, lied to, criticized, even insulted etc. etc... Agreeing not to retaliate is good but God is asking us to go even further and to LOVE them! WHY?  For our benefit.  It puts you into a positive attitude to receive “MORE”.  From God’s perspective. Loving others demonstrates our obedience to God and placing our desires second to His – not ‘when I feel like it’.  This is a sure sign of maturity and character development. We love the most when we love those that are the least loveable.  When others don’t love us we have a chance to show what’s really in our hearts. Love is an act of the will, not the exercise of emotions.  Haggai Love that is given might not be returned. “This is a fact of life.” Jesus commanded us to love anyway. He did not say we would be loved in return. I do believe however that we always someway, somewhere, somehow, someday will reap what we sow. Giving love and expecting love in return is conditional love. Loving is simply part of our discipleship service to others.

Do you see what I see? Do you hear what I hear? I know you're thinking of Christmas and the song of the same title but I have a different intent here. Can you see and recognize what is happening in your country? Do you understand what God is doing? Are you even aware that God is the One who is doing it? Not Always As It Appears Things are not always as they appear to be. Case in point, what is happening across our great country. It is not only political division between differing ideologies on how to govern. There is not just an uptick in violence. Racial discrepancies have always existed. This is not just the result of hate against a sitting President. There is something more going on and we need to be paying particular attention to it. This is clearly the case when you have a biblical worldview. When you read the accounts in Scripture of God's repeated warnings, man's failure, and God's response it becomes clear. Our nation is under the judgment of God. As a country, we have spurned God over the past five decades and pushed Him further and further out of our lives. Even in the Church, we are guilty of forgetting our first love and denying the truth. We have openly stopped preaching God's Word in exchange for more palatable "self-help" and "personal improvement" topics. We've neglected the truth for too long. Shaken To Awaken A recent catch phrase is to be "woke." Woke means to be enlightened to finally see the oppression of the system that "the man" has imposed. This is especially true with regard to minorities. The problem is that the "woke" are actually blind to what is really happening. Only the redeemed are truly "woke" and see life as it really is. Do you see? Or do you think you see? Reading through the pages of Scripture, it is difficult not to recognize that God is shaking thing up. Literally! Through the various upheavals, natural disasters, political tensions, and unrest, God is the one doing the shaking. The goal? To wake us up from our slumber. I am convinced that God is using - through permission and intention - these events to get our attention. Why? For the same reason He did so throughout the Old Testament and New. To call us to repentance and confession. To turn to Him and seek Him that He might relent and heal our land. This was not meant only for the people of Israel. The writer of Hebrews let's us know that God is still at work to call His people to repentance and subsequent faithfulness. We must follow the prayer of Daniel and pray for our country that God would demonstrate, again, His power and love for us. May God bless America. _________________________________ DTLCRadio.com

Shazam! is the last of the DC Extended Universe movies that I'll be looking at in the current batch. If you've been following this podcast, you'll know I tend to prefer the serious movies. Man of Steel, Batman V Superman etc. So you might be suprised to learn that I really like this movie. Why? For similar reasons that I also like the MCU Spiderman movies. The humour is believable in-universe and comes naturally out of the characters, specifically, it's natural kid reactions to the world around them. The stakes are much lower than the average superhero movie, but given the child protagonist, they still feel like very high stakes. There's something that just works nicely about it all. So let's dig in and geek out over Shazam! ----more---- Transcript   Welcome to Nerd Heaven I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars And I am a Nerd.   This is Episode 36 of the podcast. Today, we’re talking about Shazam.   Before we go on, I just want to give a quick shout out to Scott from Florida who gave me my very first review on Apple Podcasts, my very first review anywhere so thank you very much, Mate. That made my day. And if you are enjoying the podcast, please consider giving a quick review wherever you do listen. I know  that both Apple Podcasts and Stitcher have a review system. Probably a number of other places as well. So, yeah, that would definitely be helpful.    The description on IMDB reads A newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected superpowers and soon gains a powerful enemy.   This movie was written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke It was directed by David F. Sandberg And it first released on the 2nd of April 2019.   The movie begins with a reasonable dark opening. It’s great because it gives us a lot of sympathy for Thad. And it was a brilliant move to bring in John Glover, AKA Lional Luthor from Smalville to play his father. He’s great at playing a lousy father. It was a joy to see him in that cameo.   So Thad is disrespected and misunderstood by both his father and his older brother. And then he’s pulled into this magical place where he meets a wizard. He’s seen something in Thad. But Thad needs to prove himself. But the seven deadly sins are manipulative, and they know just what buttons to press. And just like all of us, in the face of sin, he falls short.  He is not sufficiently pure of heart. The wizard is looking for absolute moral perfection. Well, he’s not gonna find that in the human race. I like this because we really see ourselves reflected in Thad. And it makes him yet more relatable to us. We’re really feeling for this little boy. If things hadn’t come to a head, do you think the wizard would ever have been successful in his search? Do you think he ever would have found someone worthy? Someone sufficiently pure of heart? Personally, I don’t think he would. I think it was an impossible quest. Obviously, I’m speaking from my own beliefs and theology.   So he’s back in the car. He’s distraught. He came so close to finally having some power in his life. And it’s been snatched away from him. And that distraction causes the death of his father.   And in his pain, and despair, the sins reach out to him. Oh, I feel so sorry for this kid.   So then we cut to present day. Our first introduction to Billy Batson demonstrates just how unworthy he is. But he’s not just a delinquent for the sake of being delinquent. He’s trying to find his mother. A quest we can all have sympathy for. I like how the kid is unable to convince the radio room that he’s an adult. He says “walkie talkie” .This movie allows kids to be kids. Some movies overly empower kids. Makes them stronger, smarter, or more world-aware than they should be. Now, this is a useful trope in kid’s entertainment, but for adults, Kid empowerment just doesn’t ring true. So I like how this movie allows the kids to be kids. In a way, the whole point of this movie is the opposite. Oh, the kids get the empowerment fantasy, and which of us didn’t have a fantasy like that when we were kids, but it actually de-powers the adult version of Billy, because inside that big strong body is the mind of a kid. It’s good stuff.   So as he stares at the house, hoping that maybe this is the one. Maybe this will be his mother, we get the flashback to the day he got lost.   And we feel the same heart-broken confusion that Billy felt. How was he never reunited with his Mum? I mean, any mother would move heaven and earth to find their child. Right? Finally, he’ll get some answers. But one look at the skin tone of the woman and it’s obvious she’s not the right Racheal Batson. It was cleverly done.   So he’s introduced to his new foster parents, Victor and Rosa. And I really like them. They really have created a loving family environment for these kids. Fostering is not something I’m personally connected with, and have no real experience with, so I have no idea what it feels like to be in Billy’s situation, sitting in a car with strangers who are trying to act like parents. It must be awkward for both parties. But I just find these characters really heart-warming.   All the kids in this house are nicely developed with fun personalities, or lack of personality in the case of Pedro. I find myself liking all of these characters.   Freddy turns out to be a big Superhero fanboy. Which I can understand. In the world they live in, where superheroes are real, people would be fascinated by them. They’d want to own a replica batarang, or a genuine bullet that had been fired at Superman. Plus, it ingratiates him with us, because we’re DC superhero fans just like him.   So that’s it. Billy has run out of addresses. So in despair, he throws the notebook away. He’s just gonna have to try to make it work with these people. I think he can actually see that this is a great family, and he could do well to be a part of it. But it’s still not his family. He still has this need to find his mother. To understand what happened. And of course he does.   We catch up with Thad, as an adult. He’s investigating people who have had the same childhood experience he did with the wizard. The scientist working for him thinks it’s all a case of mass hysteria she’s investigating. But this latest case has revealed to him the sequence of symbols that will lead him back to the wizard.   The moment when the scientist touches the symbols and burns to ash is dark, but isn’t played as horrific as it really is.   Thad has become super hardened. And so he releases the seven deadly sins, wanting to claim their power. But sin is always manipulative. He’s become their slave. A vessel for them to inhabit.   There seems to be a wide age range in this school. You’ve got young kids like darla all the way up to teenagers old enough to drive. Although, admittedly, Americans seem to be allowed to drive a lot younger than here in Australia.   It’s really telling of the character of these kids when they knock a kid over, and their greatest concern is the mark on their car. I know they’re antagonists, but even the biggest jerk would surely feel a little guilt or worry if they literally just hit someone with their car. To not do so would seem to suggest a very serious psychological condition. Billy doesn’t stand up for Feddy until they make a crack about him not having a mother. That hits too close to home. Helping others doesn’t come naturally to Billy. He’s a loner. By definition, his life has been all about looking after his own interests. Because he’s always felt alone.   So he hides in the train and is transported to the wizard. I really like his movie, but the wizard stuff is the one bit I have an issue with. As is usual, I tend to compare stuff to Man of Steel, because, to me, that’s the pinnacle of DC movies. Can I mentally accept that this wizard exists in the same universe as Man of Steel? It’s a hard mental stretch. It really is. It all feels so cheesy and kinda silly. Billy’s reactions are pretty natural. The wizard’s name is Shazam of all things. I mean, they might as well have called him Abra-cadabra. How can you take that seriously? And even in a comedic movie, you still need to be able to take the core concept seriously. Unless it’s an outright parody, like The Naked Gun. Then nothing matters. The movie only exists for the comedy. But this isn’t The Naked Gun. This is a proper story set in the DC universe.   Of course, this is all straight from the comic. They didn’t just make this stuff up. But what do you do when the source material in the comic is fundamentally cheesy? How do you make it work? Honestly, I don’t know. I’m not sure I can think of a way to make it work much better than they did here. If I were writing this, I’d probably have to make some changes from the source material. Like, maybe Billy Had to come up with his own word, so he said “Shazam” as a bit of a joke. I know. Blasphemous.   But there’s still interesting stuff going on here. Billy, like Thad, thinks that the Wizard’s quest for a perfect person, pure of heart, is an impossible quest. But the wizard no longer has a choice. The sins have escaped. He needs a champion. Any champion. So he lowers his standards and he takes the very next kid he tests. It’s gonna be Billy. Interesting development. So he transforms into …. Well, let’s just call him Shazam. Because what can you do? The powers he receives are: The wisdom of Solomon The strength of Hercules The stamina of atlas The power of zeus The courage of cilles And the speed of mercury.   Notice how so many of DC’s characters are connected to greek mythology? Apart from Solomon, of course, who was a Israelite King. And, that’s the one power I’m not sure he actually demonstrates in this movie. He makes a whole lot of unwise choices in his superhero adult form. Now, we’ll watch and see how his wisdom might grow through the course of the movie, but if the wisdom of solomon really is part of his power set, shouldn’t it begin to manifest as soon as he transforms, like his other powers? But then, it does take him a while to learn to fly.   When he wakes up, he runs out of the train and bumps his head on the top of the doorway. That was a really nice touch. Because, of course, he’s a lot taller than he was a few minutes ago.   So Billy goes to the only person he can think of. Freddy. He’s really into superheroes. And just a little note, I can’t quite believe that the term “caped crusader” exists in universe in the same world in which Batman V Superman took place.  I mean, do we really need to reference all the old cheesy sayings?   But the whole thing with these two kids geeking out and trying to figure out what powers he has feels pretty natural. Interesting thing, Freddy doesn’t actually ask “how did this happen?” That would be the first question out of my mouth.   Zachery Levi does a pretty good job of portraying a child in an adult’s body.   I love the interactions they have with the mugger and the pepper-spray woman. The humour works great because it all feels like natural dialog for a couple of kids trying to navigate this unusual situation.   And then that thought occurs to him. The thought that many a kid would have when suddenly transformed into an adult. “I’d like to buy some of your finest beer, please.”   So do they really sell alcohol in petrol stations in America? Sorry, gas stations. Or is it just a corner store? Either way, the only place you get alcohol in Australia in a licensed bottle shop. So this feels pretty weird to me. Anyway, I love how they try the beer and hate it. Then go back in and buy chips and soft drink.   So he goes home, Darla sees him, and he learns he can change back and forth by saying Shazam. I don’t have much to say about this, but it’s all good.   So Thad breaks into the board meeting of his father’s company, and surprise surprise, his father is actually alive. He survived the car crash. But he lost the use of his legs. His older brother is a board member. So just picks him up and hurls him out the window to his death. That was kind of intense. The shock of the actors in this scene really sells the emotional reality of the situation. You don’t always expect that in a comedic movie. Very well done. And then he releases the sins from his eye. One of them ites the head off a board member. It’s pretty intense stuff So Thad’s father definitely gets his comeuppance, for being such a bad father. But I think we can agree that it’s probably more than he deserves. And the board members, what did they do? For a minute, I thought Thad was going to let his father live, and suffer with all that he’d lost. But no, he let’s greed, the sin most associated with the man, eat him. WE notice that Thad had become significantly darker, more evil. Letting all that stuff into him and corrupting him even further. Brought out the worst parts of him, which were already pretty bad.   Meanwhile, Billy is also using his newfound powers to give some comeuppance to those who have wronged him.   So Billy and Feddy go off to do some more tests, after destroying their school books with lightning power. Billy does a dance move on camera called a floss. I know it’s called that because my son used to do it. Kids seem to always be doing dance moves these days.  Anyway, it’s just a little moment to visually show the kid inside the adult body. These guys feel like they’re acting believably in character though all of these comedic shenanigans. That’s what makes the humour in Shazam work. If you’ve listened to a few of my DC podcasts, you know I like the serious movies. So you might have been surprised to learn that I really like this movie. I like it for the same reasons I really like Spiderman homecoming and Spiderman Far from Home. The humour is natural and believable for a child protagonist. The kids act like kids. And the stakes are quite low. Especially in the first Spiderman. We’re not dealing with world-ending stakes like Superman or the Avengers would face. But given that these characters ARE kids, the lower stakes still feel like significant challenges for our heroes. It works really well.   I like how they test a bunch of different powers, some of which he has, and some of which he doesn’t.   I’ll admit, I’m kinda jealous of their youTube numbers. Anyway.   The montage that follows is entertaining. One thought about the toilet scene. This is an example of a superhero movie kinda making fun of the genre. Billy has no idea how to get his pants down when in Shazam form. So he changes. That actually makes sense in his case. The costume isn’t something you put on. It magically appears around you. But, by extension, this is kind of making fun of other Superheros. For example, how does Superman use the toilet in his suit? But in his case, we need to remember his suit is alien technology. I have no hesitation in believing that although there are no visible seams, his pants can separate from the top when needed. I know I’m analysing this way more than the film-makers intend. It’s a joke. But, I’ve mentioned before how some superhero movies draw attention to the silly aspects of their stories and make fun of it. Marvel does this a lot. But I tend to prefer the other approach, where the movie either makes the thing work, or just drops it altogether.   I like the real-estate scene, but I don’t have anything to say about it.   So the conflict begins between Billy and Freddy. I get why Freddy broke his own rule and bragged that the new Superhero would come to lunch the next day, without asking Billy first. He’s a kid who’s tired of being bullied. It’s a very kid thing to do. I also get why he feels he’s as much a part of all this as Billy. Billy did come to him for help, and they have been in this together from the start. I also get that Billy would be feeling a bit used and unappreciated It’s all believable teenage behaviour   There’s an ongoing joke throughout the movie where everyone keeps coming up with different names for Billy’s superhero form. Remember, Shazam is technically the name of the wizard. This, of course, is poking fun at the fact that the character used to be called Captain Marvel, before DC lost to Marvel in the legal dispute over that name.   So Billy decides to wag school, leaving Freddy in the lurch regarding lunch time. And there’s a nice scene where he saves Mary and then they have a conversation about her reaction to being accepted into college. It’s touching because it’s the first time we see Billy really reaching out to one of his new siblings and caring about them, wanting to help them. But it’s also amusing because unlike the usual wise advice you’d expect to get from a Superhero in a situation like this, he gives her terrible advice that comes out of Billy’s own selfishness. Again, it’s coming from a teenage boy. Great stuff. But he tells her that that family is for people who can’t take care of themselves, which really sums up who Billy is at the moment.   You can’t not feel sorry for Freddy when he’s humiliated in the lunchroom.   And then Billy finally realises how his actions affect other people when his lightning show nearly causes the death of everyone on that bus.   So at 1.25 hours in, over half way through, Billy finally meets his villain. Thad. In all the excitement of saving people and getting paid for selfies, fighting a villain is one thing that never occurred to Billy until now.   Billy is immediately out of his league. Which again makes sense, because he’s just a kid. But he immediately realises he needs Freddy.   Transforming back into his teenage self to escape was a smart move.   So the other kids figure out who Billy is, and Eugene has identified his real parents. It seems unlikely that the police couldn’t find his mum, just because she reverted to her maiden name. But I happily forgive that because the scene that follows has so much emotional weight to it.   Wow. So he reveals himself to his mum, and leans in to hug her. And she kind of pushes him away, looking visibly shaken. Already the scene is hitting me deep.   When Billy first let go of her hand and went missing, she panicked, but when she saw him with the police officers, she let herself believe that they could do a better job of looking after him than she could. She believed he’d be better off without her. So she left. And she actively hid herself so she wouldn’t be found.   I understand the feeling of parental inadequacy. I feel it a lot. And she has reason to feel it too. She’s 17 years old with a child she’s raising on her own. She has no support. Probably no money. She feels she’s never going to be able to give him a good life. But the one thing he really needs, she can give him. A mother’s love. That’s what he needs most. That’s what she doesn’t understand. But to give up your child like that. Man, I could never do that. I couldn’t even comprehend that.   And now, she immediately tries to justify herself by saying “But you’re okay right. You landed on your feet. You look good.”   And Billy, with all the heartbreak he’s feeling, as he realises he’s been completely rejected by the mother he’s searched for all his life, so crushed in spirit, actually spares her feelings by saying he just wanted to let her know he was good, and he’s going back to his real family now.”   He’s the mature one here. He’s the adult in this situation. He’s the one putting the needs of others before himself, while she’s just looking out for herself.   But I think there’s actually a little truth to what Billy says. I think he realises in this moment that his new foster family cares for him a heck of a lot more than his biological mother ever did. They can be the family he always craved. But I think he also realises just how messed up his mother is. She’s not in any better situation now than she was when she was 17. In fact, she’s probably worse. Evidence suggests she may be in a relationship with an abusive partner.   If they were to re-enter each other’s lives, he’d be the one taking care of her. And given the chance, he’d probably do that. But she doesn’t want him in her life. That is clear. And she doesn’t even remember the compass, which was such a symbol to him all his life. But he’s right, she needs it more than he does. She’s still lost, whereas Billy is starting to realise what he’s found.   Of course, none of this is really going to dampen the pain he is going through right now.   It’s a powerful scene. Fantastic stuff.   And that’s when he gets the phone call, letting him know that Thad has his family. But now he’s ready. He’s just gone through some powerful character growth. Now he’s ready to be the hero. And now he knows just how much that family means to him. This is how it’s done. Character growth, overcoming the internal demons equips a protagonist to defeat the external demon. In this case, Thad and his, well, literal demons.   Don’t you just love story structure?   The batarang moment was important because it allows Billy to realise that Thad is vulnerable when the sins are not inside him.   And then we end up in Monsters Inc. I’m not sure what’s supposed to be behind all these doors.  Other planets? Other realities? The crocodiles playing cards are kinda weird.   Thad says Billy doesn’t deserve the name Champion. Billy is no more worthy than Thad was as a child. Billy knows that. But he’s about to show us that you don’t need to be perfect to be a hero. You just need to learn from your mistakes and do better.   The kids have figured out that Thad is powerless when the sins leave his eye, so, in a true act of bravery, given they have no powers at all, they bait him into letting them chase her. But he’s gotta keep one in his eye.   At that last moment when hope seems lost, Billy realises his greatest power is enlisted the help of those he loves most. The thrones wait for his brothers and sisters. So he transforms all of his siblings, giving them the same powers he has. It’s a little corny, but it’s all very thematic. And it works, because the movie has kind of earned it.   They do a little bit of the others struggling to figure out their powers, but they learn to use them way quicker than Billy did. But I guess you could argue that they at least have Billy’s example to know what is and isn’t possible.   The actor that plays adult Darla does a pretty nice job of portraying a little girl in an adult body.   Nice little payoff as Freddy gives the two bullies suitcase wedgies, like they did to him. I didn’t pick up on that detail before.   So now we have the final confrontation. Billy has to convince the sin to come out. He figures out which one is left and appeals directly to what it is. And then we have a Disney death, where thad falls on his own, rather than being actively killed by the hero. Except that Billy saves him. And then traps the sins back in the rock.   So Billy is with his family now. He’s home.   And then we get a payoff to the lunch scene. Freddy is still a pariah, but he doesn't care. Because he’s a superhero. But Billy shows up and brings Superman, minus his head, since Henry Cavill was unavailable to film the scene.   I mean, it was a fun little reveal. But it’s a real shame we didn’t get to actually see Billy meet Superman, and have Superman give him some advice. I think there’s a lot of potential for a Tony Stark / Peter Parker style relationship there. I mean, we’ve all seen the screenshot of the comic with Clark Kent sitting next to Billy, even if we haven’t read the comics. But films bring in their own logistical challenges. Maybe we’ll get to see some of that in the sequel.   Not having anywhere near enough comic book cred, I didn’t know what the talking caterpillar was all about, in the mid credit scene, other than …. It seemed kinda silly. So I asked Google. Turns out it’s Mister Mind. A worm from the planet venus. Hmm. That’s gonna be a hard villain for me to swallow. Not that I’d want to swallow a worm.   Anyway. We’ll see what, if anything, comes of that. So that was Shazam. A pretty entertaining movie with more heart than you might expect from the comedic tone. That brings my coverage of the DC Extended Universe to a close. As I said in a previous episode, I haven’t Birds of Prey yet so I’m not going to be talking about it. I’ll cover more DC movies as they come out. We’ve got Wonder woman 1984 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming. Theatrical movies are gonna be harder for me to cover in this format, as I can’t watch them over and over, pausing to take notes, so I’m not sure how that’ll work with Wonder Woman. I might wait until it is released on Blur Ray. I dunno.   Next fortnight, I’m gonna give an overview of my thoughts on the first two seasons of Star Trek Discovery. Then, the next episode after that we’ll be starting on season 3.   Don’t forget you can look me up at AdamDavidCollings.com where you can learn all about my book series, Jewel of The Stars.   Until then, have a great two weeks. On December 17, 2010, I saw the Provo Tabernacle engulfed in flames. That beautiful, historic building held within its walls such beautiful memories and such a rich pioneer heritage! I could not bear to watch. At the same time, I could not look away. A few moments later, the roof caved in, and everyone watching knew that the tabernacle was gone. Why? For what purpose would the Lord allow such a huge part of our heritage to burn to the ground? So it is with us. Something devastating happens and we wonder why the Lord would allow us to experience so much loss and sorrow. I share insights from two of my daughters-in-law who had struggled with doubting their faith. Each share how she came to trust the Lord during her trials.Key PointsThe adversary wants you to stop trusting the Lord. Feelings of fear, doubt, and frustration do not come from the Holy Ghost. Eliminate the things in your life that are not serving you. Replace them with thoughts and actions that will strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ.Visualize yourself with the Savior in Gethsemane--in the far outer borders.Lean-in. So then it must be just to show solidarity with the rest of the workforce who are being laid off, furloughed or terminated. But does the rest of the workforce really care? None of us is guaranteed a pain-free life. But when we can’t see the right way to move forward, that’s where God steps in to take us by the hand and leads us out of the dark. On today’s episode, Army veteran and Bachelorette contestant Luke Pell and author/speaker Jack Deere share some of their painful moments—an unexplainable, near-death experience; watching a spouse slip into an alcohol addiction; losing a child—events that almost caused them to give up. But each man reminds us: when it feels like we have nothing left to cling to, God is there. And He’s ready to guide us through those experiences so that later, we can support others who may not be able to find their way out, either. Christmas 2019 19. Wise Men on a Journey 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” Matthew 2:1-18 We are now going to think about the Magi, or wise men as they are popularly known. Travelling is what these men were doing, and probably for quite a long time. Why? For it seems they originated in what we now call Iran but used to be called Persia. The Magi were sort of priestly group - not kings, as is usually supposed in traditional Christmas presentations. They were men who studied the night skies for signs of what was going to happen. We would label them astrologers today, but they were more than that. They were aware of ancient writings and promises that had been made long before they were born, and looked to see where and when they would be fulfilled. Those who visited Jesus had seen a clear sign that an ancient promise was shortly coming to pass. There is a verse in the Old Testament, Numbers 24:17 which reads, ‘A star will come out of Jacob; a sceptre will rise out of Israel.’ No wonder, then, that they burst into Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, with the question, ‘Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We’ve seen his star. . we’ve come to worship him.’ With a bit of help from the Jewish scholars, the star took them to Bethlehem, where they found the young child with his mother. They brought gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. These three gifts may have suggested that there were just three of them in the party, but Matthew gives us no data on that. Gold; frankincense and myrrh. Gold, a gift fit for a king. Incense, a gift appropriate for a priest; still used today in some churches. Myrrh, a gift suggesting sacrifice and death, for it was an embalming spice. What other insights did they have, we wonder, as they travelled and talked among themselves. Matthew understood that they were significant to the story of Jesus birth, not just because they came, but because they were part of God’s strategy for Jesus. Those gifts were valuable, extremely so, and their value would have provided the means for the Holy Family to escape into Egypt and remain there for as long as it was necessary. This thought is strengthened by the fact that it was the Magi’s visit that provoked Herod’s wrath and his vicious massacre of the young boys of Bethlehem. There is something unexplained and mysterious about this visit of the Magi but, whatever else may be true, it makes the point for us that Jesus coming into the world was not only to save his people – that is the Jewish people – from their sins. Far from it; he was coming to be the Saviour of the world. His life, death and resurrection would establish salvation for all who would believe and receive it, regardless of race, colour, creed, culture, or social status. In emphasising the nature of the gifts they brought, we may overlook that, first of all, ‘they bowed down and worshipped him.’ They realised to some extent, that he was more than just another earthly king; that, somehow, he was destined to be of wider and greater significance than that. The apostle John was later to write of him as ‘The Word of God’ and penned the words, ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.’ Perhaps these Magi were Wise Men after all, in that they partly understood what we’ve come to call incarnation – God on earth as a real human being! A question for you to think about. ‘What gift could you bring to the Lord Jesus this Christmas that would express your love for him?’ Let’s finish by thinking about the stable scene in Bethlehem. Mary looking at Jesus with a mother’s love for her firstborn child, and with deep thoughts about how different their lives would be from here on. Joseph, still with Gabriel’s words ringing in his ears, already slipping into the role of being father to God’s Son. The shepherds, alive with excitement and looking with wonder at the little baby whose future was to be so big. The Magi, kneeling before the one they know is destined to be more than a king, worshipping him in a manner that befitted their religion and understanding. It’s good for us to join them all around the manger, giving thanks and praise to God for the gift of his only Son. The Lord bless you today, and then as you move into the new year. Whatever it holds for you, if you’ve stood in the stable today, you will know that God will be with you and nothing is impossible with him. We began our journey with that promise. We’ve seen how it happened for these characters. The question we now have to face and work through is, ‘Will it be true for me?’ There’s only one way to find out - trust him; he’s as good as his word. That is all for today! Come back tomorrow to see more in our Christmas series 2019, looking at Jesus Christ, the promised one of God. Evil exists in this world because we fell into sin. It threatens our bodies and also our souls. God often protects us from evil to our bodies. But sometimes He allows it. Why? For our good! When evil does come, God gives us what we need to bear it. Everything God does protects us from evil to our souls. And He will deliver us from all evil on the last day. So acknowledging that the kingdom, the power, and the glory of all things are his… we ask Him to deliver us from evil to our bodies and to our souls.Sermon Text: Matthew 6:13

Even though Assange has served his time for "jumping bail," the British court ruled that he must remain in prison. Cavalettis for Show Dogs with Vicki Ronchette Vicki Ronchette with her Lowchen. Show Dog Prep School founder Vicki Ronchette shares her tips and tools for using cavalettis to train body awareness, conditioning and more. Cavalettis, Ronchette said, are useful for a variety of issues. Dogs who pace, forge on the leash, need to know where to put their feet amongst other topics are well served by practicing with caveletti training. One of the most common uses is to build muscle memory to increase reach and extension, Ronchette said. “Most dogs love doing the cavalettis,” she added. Using simple, inexpensive materials, Ronchette provides direction for building and utilizing these obstacles in an exhibitor’s “tool kit” of preparing the dogs for the show ring. How To’s and Why For’s One of Ronchette’s most frequently asked questions is how far apart to set the poles for proper gaiting. She said she measures from the front toe to the back toe when the dog is in a comfortable stack. That is the “elementary” distance the poles are placed apart. As the dog gains skill and confidence, the poles are moved further apart to make them the dog increase its stride. “We’re asking these dogs to be athletes in the show ring,” Ronchette said. “It’s more than just walking around. It’s walking around and looking fabulous.” One specific training opportunity Ronchette uses the obstacles for is to teach not to chase other dogs. “I make them concentrate on foot work instead of chasing,” she observed. “I strongly believe that if there is any physical limitation the dog is aware of it and it increases anxiety,” Ronchette said. “When you do these type of exercises, the dog ‘owns’ that behavior and it creates confidence. Confidence changes a dog’s carriage.” Ronchette’s course at https://www.showdogprepschool.com/courses/cavaletti-work-for-perfect-gaiting/ (Show Dog Prep School). https://puredogtalk.com/45-canine-conditioning-8-simple-exercises-from-dixie-rae-sick-2/ (Canine Conditioning )with Dixie Rae Sick. Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast, where we talk about the business of being a wedding creative and also a peek into my world as a wedding videographer! I am your host, Paul Santiago.Today, we are going to focus on an industry practice which is POSTING PRICES ON YOUR WEBSITE. Some vendors do it and some don’t and they have their own reasons for doing so. Today, I am going to share with you WHY WE POSTED OUR PRICES, and WHY WE STOPPED DOING IT. All that, in this segment that I should’ve called, to post or not to post...Those are the three reasons why we used to post our prices. Again to FILTER OUT LOWBALLERS, TO ATTRACT POTENTIAL CLIENTS, and TO BE TRANSPARENT.We stopped posting our prices because of those three reasons: THEY AFFECTED OUR REPUTATION, WE SHIFTED TO CUSTOMIZED PRICING, and that OUR PRICES WERE CHANGING.Now, I’ve seen a lot of people do this, and most of them say this anyway: that YOU SHOULD POST YOUR STARTING PRICE. To be honest, I don’t want to do this. I don’t think it works. Why? For me, YOU’RE FILTERING OUT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BUY YOUR PRODUCT. That’s why I don’t think you should post the “Staring At” Price because it’s not practical. YOU ARE LIMITING YOUR CLIENT’S SPENDING POWER.We chose to post and not post our prices based on our own experiences and what we believed were the right moves that helped scale our business. Whether you choose to post your prices or not, it’s totally your call! As long as you know your worth and are confident you can deliver. Your website is your primary selling platform. It is a tool and an extension of yourself as a professional. Actor Ansel Elgort said, “You are your main news platform, so no publication has as much power as you do about posting about yourself.”I think a great way to know which works is to test them out. If one option fits your marketing efforts, and provides the most benefits to you and your potential clients, then you’ll know you made the right decision. To post or not to post prices on one’s website deserves more discussion, so I would love to get your thoughts! Let’s continue the conversation! Why do you choose to post or not post your prices? I’ve found giving free advice/ treatment/ rehab to friends and family is a waste of everyone’s time. They tend to not accept and implement the advice given, especially if it’s free. Why do they continue to hurt? Inertia and friction are strong. You give them a shove, but they roll to a stop. Removal of the friction requires “inception.” They need to care about themselves more than you do, which removes the friction. They need to goal-set and they need to take responsibility. I don't’ believe the epidemic of back pain is because of poor treatment, funds or patient management… I believe it’s because people suffering from back pain don’t overcome inertia, friction or both. I believe people with back pain, including myself, need to have a WINNING ATTITUDE about recovery… leading to more success stories as friction is decreased. Too often are we (back pain sufferers) are self defeated and play a victim. Regardless of WHY back pain happens… the recovery starts with a “mental about face.  In this podcast, I give a sneak peak of the audio version of my book called I Will Beat Back Pain: Setting A WINNING Mindset For Recovery.  Buy the book for your loved one with back pain, overcome inertia and the book will get them to decrease the friction… recovery is eminent. Get the book on Amazon in print, audio and Kindle HERE… don’t forget to review it so more people will find it for their loved ones on Amazon.   Enjoy! Here is a sneak peak of the print version:    FOREWORD Are you stagnant in your back pain or sciatica recovery?   Have you never full heartedly attempted to recover and regain your past life prior to back pain or sciatica?   Are you tired of feeling run down by your back and/or leg pain?   You’re not alone. In fact, millions of active and non-active people suffer from back pain yearly, yet 28% ever go seek medical attention of any type, and only 3% ever engage in a formal spinal rehabilitation program. So what’s the deal? Why do people in pain not seek advice? A better question is why do even less engage in a plan of attack that yields a high rate of successful recovery? What’s the barrier? This book will help you explore your personal blockade that may be shielding you from a solution that could be a simple arm’s reach away. Have you set goals? Do you feel lost and unsure in your recovery process? Are you hesitant or fearful that you won’t succeed or even worse, suffer another failed attempt at recovery?   If your back or leg pain was corrected with rest, stretching, foam rolling and/or massage, then it likely "fixed" itself within a few weeks. By the way, back pain and sciatica often go hand in hand. (But more to come on that later in this book). If these methods helped you regain your life prior to injury...great! If not, you may need a new approach. If you've failed at getting your life back following a bout of back or leg pain in the past, it's not your fault. There's lots of information out there, and it can be confusing. Many times that information overload keeps you from success. It's okay. If you've been concerned in the past that you can't succeed at improving your back pain or sciatica, I want you to put those fears to rest. You can do this. You just need the right person to walk you through the process. Gurus on Instagram, Facebook and other social media want you to think you need to use the newest type of technology and treatments to get better, like stem cell, vibrating guns and copper products. I'm here to tell you they're wrong. People have successfully recovered from back pain for years without these. How do you think animals in the wild recover from back pain and sciatica? Did they gather all the nuts they’ve squirreled away to finance stem cell injections 3 times a year? No, they just moved and got better! If you've ever thought there's a faster, more efficient way of recovering from back pain or sciatica than months of unfruitful stretching or rest, you're right. I know you have aspirations of running your dream destination race, hiking on the weekend, surfing (aka slappin’ the lip), weightlifting or just plain old moving everyday as you go about your life without wondering if you’ll trigger your “bad back” in the process. I'm here to assist you in that process, but guess what… it all starts with a mental “about face.” What would you do tomorrow if your back or leg pain was gone? Totally gone! Gone in the way as if you never ever had it and you have no fear of reinjuring it. Gone as in never again having a thought in your mind about your “bad back?” Write it down. With that goal in mind, keep your eye on the prize and devour this book. Enjoy!     INTRODUCTION I’m Dr. Sebastian Gonzales and I’m a back pain survivor! I have to admit; it feels good to say that. Sadly, not a lot of people can say the same. Here are some rough stats you’ll encounter as you perouse through the Internet: 80% of people have experienced back pain at some point in their lives. 50% of people say that they had back pain some time in the last year. ~ 33% of people have had back pain in the previous three months.   Why is back pain so prevalent? That is the billion-dollar question. We have many clues, yet very few solid answers. Why is there so much mystery surrounding back pain? Simple, because humans are complex beings. Nobody is the exact same. You and I have so many differences: Body type Gender Upbringing Past and current jobs Hobbies Life experiences What beliefs we create from those life experiences Support systems Financial status Educational background   The list can go on and on, but in my opinion, the #1 most forgotten step of successful recovery from back pain is getting your head right first. You need to be mentally ready for recovery before you go through a formal back rehab program. As the saying goes, “The solution to your problem will present itself when you’re ready to hear it.” How many times have you heard people say, “I wish I would have known that years ago?” To be honest, they probably did hear that piece of advice or suggestion years ago, but they weren’t in the right frame of mind to use that information appropriately. Evidence based rehabilitation plans surrounding back pain are the same. As a rehab expert, I now know what will work in most cases, yet back pain is a nationwide, maybe worldwide, epidemic. Why? For all of the reasons I covered above. My insurance won’t pay for it. I have 3 kids and I don’t have time. I tried everything and nothing worked. I can’t stop doing the things that creates my back pain. Everyone has different reasons why they still have the back pain they do, just like everyone has their own reasons for not eating healthy. We all kind of have an idea of what we need to do, but something is blocking us from getting it done. I too had a mental block in recovery from my back pain. Mine was pride. I knew what I probably should have been doing, but my emotions and fears got in the way of following my own instructions. I eventually swallowed my pride, appeared to not know anything about back pain to a colleague, and decided to succumb to his direction over my own. Mine clearly wasn’t producing the results I wanted. I was too close to the problem to logically guide myself. I’ve been depressed, confused, overwhelmed and frustrated with my back condition as well, as you’ll learn in this book. Getting my head in the right mental state to recover was the missing link in my recovery. Just to be clear, the pain is not “in your head,” it’s a real sensation that can successfully be reduced without surgery in a majority of people. We often jump to the fear of having a surgery at the first hint of back pain, but it rarely needs to go that far. I was just like you, I was frozen by fear of making it worse and I also needed some assistance, some guidance. My personal goals while rehabbing were to survive a plane flight to Europe and playing recreational league baseball again. I’m confident this book will assist you finding your correct mindset for recovery. I look at my experiences defeating back pain as a real life education in what it’s like from a patient’s point of view. I’ve heard many people say they disagree with their doctors’ recommendations and say he or she never listened to their concerns. I feel this book will provide insight to you as I blend my clinical knowledge about back pain with concerns I had as the patient. Allow me to begin by sharing my clinical perspective. Over the course of my clinical career, I’ve been working with hardworking weekend warriors for over nine years to decrease symptoms of back pain and nerve pain to the glutes & legs. I’ve seen some really hard cases that ended up requiring surgery or injections and others that felt over 50% improvement in a matter of weeks. In my early years I was what I would consider a “soft tissue doc” and had the belief that soft tissue care was literally the only thing people needed to get better. I had some failed cases and I just chalked them up to being “tough cases.” I was great with hips, knees, ankles and shoulders, but I was subpar at low back cases. I thought many of acute low back cases were just “hard cases” that needed a little more time before I could do what I was good at. The problem was that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. In reality, these acute cases weren’t that hard and I was just missing some critical pieces of the puzzle. My treatment plan was incomplete, yet my practice was thriving. My patients were happy, but there were some people I just couldn’t help. These were the cases that ate me up inside, in fact I’ve had many nights of restless sleep thinking about what I could have done better. How could I have helped these patients who were clearly suffering? During this point in my life, I was fortunate enough to have a local fellow chiropractor as a friend to drink beer and eat pizza with. We bounced cases off each other and discussed what we could have done better. We shared stories of successes and failures. As you could guess most of my failure cases were spines, so one day I asked after way too many beers… “So how much do you think I know that you know about back cases?” “15%” Now he was a bullshitter at times and I still don’t know if he was bullshitting me or not, but it sparked my interest to learn more. Long story short, he was right! Nobody likes to admit when they don’t know what they were doing; I’m no exception. I did well with some types of cases, but I would continually “strike out” with low back pain people. Some doctors are satisfied with people coming in weekly for pain management; I’m not. I expected better results. I expected people to have a huge reduction of pain within a few weeks and then we would continue to reverse the adaptive process of how they got in pain in the first place. I never seemed to have this type of success with low back patients. I expected more than having patients lean on my hands as their weekly “adjustment.” In other types of cases, I had amazing success in getting people out of pain fast and then coaching them in reintroduction of what their long-term goals were. Playing baseball Surfing Running marathons   Getting out of pain was never my goal of my patients, and it wasn’t their long-term goal either. Within this book, you’ll learn part of the other 85% I’ve learned specifically in regards to low back pain. You’ll learn of the myths and guidelines of how to return to life and your favorite activity after experiencing a “bad back.” I can say with confidence now that I can assist people with low back pain, yet I continue to get better weekly. The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know.   Fact: Recovery from back pain starts with a mental “about face.” I’ve been there. I’ve had back pain that has taken me out of weightlifting, running, throwing and hitting a baseball. I know what it’s like to be depressed. I know what it’s like to shy away from hikes, not want to go on long plane flights because of fear of sitting and to be mentally preoccupied by thoughts of my back. Knowing other people have been through it all before me was one the most important aspects of my recovery, which is what I’ll be sharing in this book. An advanced version of this book is available with the program I start people on when they have flexion intolerant back pain (can’t bend forward, but backwards is relatively comfortable). The advanced version will include detailed videos to walk you through the process, step-by-step. You can find the advanced course at: www.P2SportsCare.com/Courses-List/ As for this book, consider it as step one in your journey to recovery.   Who will benefit from this book? Weekend warriors with a passion to work hard and play harder The busy moms, who have to keep up with their kids The dads who relive their own "glory days" watching their sons play high school football The 30 year old marathoner who’s pushing for Boston   The great part about getting your head ready for recovery is that everyone has the same building blocks: asking yourself what you believe to be true about your back pain and comparing it to what current research says. I’ll provide all of the common myths and facts about back pain in this book. Before you start, I want to commend you for taking a deeper look into how to keep moving and pushing through your passion in a healthy way. Most people don’t know what it takes to keep them from an “overuse” injury and “old age aches and chronic boo-boos.” Most of the people who present with back discomfort and sciatica into sports medicine facilities are weekend warriors… I would consider myself one. We are the majority who don’t get paid to play and often sacrifice proper planning for other aspects of life (work, kids, spouse, etc.). Don’t be turned off by the technical aspects of this book. The reason why people continue to have back discomfort and sciatica is because they decide to not take an interest in how their own body works. Some people I’ve had enter my clinic have been very open about not wanting to learn anything about why they are hurt… they just want to be told what to do, how often, how long and so on. To be clear, this book is not written for that type of person. You’ll get a ton of information out of this book… more than you would ever get from 24 appointments of rehab that would cost you your copay x 24! Read it a few times over and the next time you have an injury to the back, hip or leg you will know exactly what’s going on!   Let’s Be Clear Real quick, before we go into my history of back pain, I want to make sure that I frame something really well for you. I want you to fully understand what this book is REALLY about.   I want you to understand where this book came from, and from what mindset it was born of. This book was originally a full course on how to assist yourself though low back pain, if there was no help within the next 100 miles.   The course was packed full of nearly everything you would need to get yourself better (if applied well). It was 260 pages, full of pictures, videos and simple analogies.   I developed this large scale course after I was asked by about 10 friends who lived far away, about how to improve their situation with their back.   They all had not found success with their first efforts, which included things like yoga, stretching, spinal adjustments, massage, rest, avoidance and exercise. To be clear, some of these work really well for people but they were not working for my friends.   Naturally, I wanted to help, so I frame worked a video based course with a correlated text that happened to be 260 pages long.   I gave this guide out to all of them for free under one condition, I needed them to grammar and spell check it for me.   A month passed before I followed up with each of them. I was hoping that they were feeling way better! 50% better or at least hopeful, after realizing how simply many forms of back pain can be resolved.   I was really surprised by the outcome. Absolutely NOBODY had even started to open the guide in any way, shape, or form. Not one page was flipped nor a video started. They never even heard my killer analogies!   Frustrated and wondering how to get anyone to read this book, that took me about 4 months to create, I asked them all what happened? Why didn’t they start? They received a possible solution for FREE for heaven’s sake.   Funny because I hear all the time how they can’t afford treatments, personal coaching or other very helpful things when it comes to recovery from low back pain.   After digging down into the root of these issues, one reason seemed to rise to the surface.   “It seemed too long and it was daunting to even start.”   After hearing this over and over again, I couldn’t help but recall the first time I heard someone tell be about the abbreviation TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read). Snotty teenager.   Working in an industry where I basically sell an idea of change to people who are not always receptive to the change needed to solve their problem, I thought about what needs to be done to get these 10 people to read this guide.   The natural thing seemed like I should cut it down, but it was already pretty damn trim. Back pain is a 600 billion dollar problem in the U.S. and I feel misinformation is one driver of this ongoing epidemic. Trimming even more would not help!   The compromise I settled on was to cut the course into two parts. The book before you is part one, yet within this section there is not one single physical suggestion about what to do and how to feel better.   I concluded that there needs to be a MENTAL MINDSET change that occurs before PHYSICAL RECOVERY can ever happen.   Listening to the feedback I got, I concluded that some people are not ready to commit to 260 pages or even a morning walk. Some people are sold on the idea that they can get better by paying for professional assistance or even opening a Youtube video that may be a very critical part of their recovery (and yes, there is great free information on Youtube, most people with ongoing low back issues are just using them the wrong way, at the wrong time, and the wrong dosage.)   Pla0in and simple. Some people just aren’t ready to change. Perhaps they have not set their goals high enough yet, perhaps they are deep in depression and hid it, or maybe they have been told that their diagnosis will not get better no matter what they try.   Regardless, lack of proper and adequate self motivation will yield poor recovery. Period.   So, now you know, this is part one of a larger course. I took the liberty of improving the storytelling and emotional impact it could have on you. Hollywood movies are great at this. Some people walk out of that movie and feel inspired to improve their situation, change their life some how or hatch an island of dinosaurs. The first part of this book is where I share my story of recovery that hopefully inspires you.   The second part, we go more into myth busting, analogies and actionable steps you can take.   Let me be clear… during the course of reading this book I want you to feel motivated to do something helpful.   That could be reaching out to your trusted medical doctors, chiropractor, physical therapist, health coach or even a friend who you’ve seen recover from a back issue personally.   I want you to take action. You don’t have to come see me. There are plenty of honest professionals out there to help you.   Yet, some of you are not as fortunate to live in an area where you have many choices of great rehab people. For this crowd, I placed mentions of my online video course (the part 2) within this book.   This book is not a scammy sale nor is this book an advertisement for me to sell you my online course. If the few references to  my course offends you in some way, my apologies, as that was not my intent. Please read this book in the light of WHY it was created-to inform people how simply many forms of back pain can be resolved.   Now you know why this book was created. I want you to get motivated and do something different.   See someone in person. No online course or directive you find will ever be better than in-person assistance. Never.   If your goal was to build a house, would you do it faster if I sent you a video or if I just came over to show you how in person?   You know the answer.

I was listening to a song called "Lullaby" by one of my favorite artists, Lukas Graham, about how he wishes he was a stay at home dad. Dude is worth 10 million dollars and wants to be a stay at home dad. Why? For the same reason that I've been saying, "Having a successful online business is the new F.U. Money." In today's episode I'm going to lay all this out for you and drop some gems that will keep you sane and down to Earth as you work to build and grow your online business. Episode #104 – Podcast Relaunch - The Return Show Notes From Defeat the Drama at Work to Live and Lead for Impact Click To Download Your Free Sliding Into Self Care: Super Simple Strategies for Crazy Busy Lives What I’ve been Up to in the last 3 years My recent Reflect - Refuel and Re-Evaluate Shift in Focus for the Podcast and Why – For now let me tell you – it’s all about serving you better and was sparked by my Re-evaluation work What I’ve been Up to in the last 3 years For the last 3 plus years I have placed a focus on my two boy who had been struggling with major health challenges. They both began suffering from different autoimmune disorders at the same time! At some point I will explore what shared variables could have caused that to happen! Let me just say, it was a crazy, busy, overwhelming, scary, frustrated, heartbreaking, sometimes celebratory time. My oldest son was diagnosed with HSP immediately after symptoms started while my youngest was already suffering the symptoms of PANS, but was undiagnosed. It took a full year to learn what was impacting his health and the road back to health has been long! I’ve been doing advocacy and awareness work since so let me give you a brief description so you can learn a little bit and also get a very small sense about what we were dealing with. With HSP the body’s immune system attacks all the small blood vessels. It is VERY painful! Small blood vessels line the entire digestive tract and are in all of the major organs. For my son this meant that he had terrible pain in his stomach as it contracted and squeezed. He ultimately went into kidney failure, causing his hands and feet to swell to the point that his skin was splitting, his blood pressure skyrocketed and he had blood in his urine. His liver was also enlarged. The first signs were red dots on his ankles and feet, which began to move up his legs. They call it a rash, but it’s actually broken blood vessels. Thankfully, he was diagnosed right away and began treatment that started with a hospital stay in Orlando where we were on vacation, and lasted for months. PANS is short for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. Sounds like a terrible disorder…AND….it is! The body’s immune system attacks the brain, causing inflammation. This creates what looks and feels like OCD, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep disorders, tics, ADD, brain fog and more. Children regress with handwriting and often are not able to function in school. They struggle tremendously or are unable to participate in school at all. And, accurate diagnosis often takes a long time or doesn’t happen at all. It took a year for us to get a diagnosis and made recovery more challenging. Symptoms show up out of nowhere overnight or in a moment and continue. In our case it was overnight. He woke me before school to share that he hadn’t slept all night and had anxiety through the roof. He was suddenly completely confused at school and unable to understand anything the teachers were saying. He would not leave his bedroom and had weird eating habits. He began losing weight. Traditional treatments that can positively impact psychiatric issues generally do little or nothing as they are not caused by chemical imbalance but by inflammation. That was our experience. And, as my son begged me to find help so he could feel better and be back to himself again, we struggled to find anything that could help. I re-prioritized my life immediately during this period and so, pressed pause on my podcast. I continued work with coaching clients and did some speaking, but my kids and their health definitely took center stage. To give you a small feel, in one year I drove approximately 3,000 miles taking my kids to appointments. Stop and think for a minute about the fear, worry, time, logistical challenges and money involved in that many appointments. And, as I’ve said, I also began spending time speaking and advocating for my kids personally with the school and health professionals and also for others. The CDC estimates that 1 in 200 kids will be impacted by PANS or PANDAS each year and yet many health practitioners and education professionals are not knowledgeable or even aware. My Reflect - Re-Fuel and Re-Evaulation I dubbed the summer of 2018 My Summer of Self Care. I focused on me and took time to Reflect, Re-Fuel and Re-Evaluate. Reflect: We moved fast and furious through 3 years and there was rarely time to think or process what we were going through. It was always just Do – Do – Do. It seemed like we moved from one challenge to the next. So, I took time to just think and remember and feel the feelings that I passed over during the many experiences we’d had. There wasn’t time to sit and let feelings flow. I was too busy and focused on research and trying the next thing. I needed to revisit what we’d been through and cry and take time to feel what was tucked away. I needed to let a lot of it out. And, I always try to focus on the positive so had definitely celebrated small victories and looked for silver linings. But, now I needed time to grieve. I took time for that this summer too. I grieved high school years that weren’t what we’d planned. Time lost. Memories not made. There were no school dances or basketball games. He barely left his room for a few years. I grieved or the college life that isn’t what we’d expected. Refuel: I was completely depleted! There was nothing left for me or anyone else. I could NOT be my best self without a focus on me. I secured down time and used it to just BE, spend time in nature, be quiet, paddle board, water walk. I took actual time off. Normally I celebrate my ability to work from anywhere while blending vacation and some scaled back work. The only true down time I’ve had in YEARS prior to this was my week-long honeymoon in Mexico. We left our electronics back home!! I also used some of the self-care suggestions from this .pdf I created. Click on the link to get your own download! It has a lot of ideas!! My Summer of Self Care – Sliding into Self Care – Super Simple Strategies for Crazy Busy Lives Re-Evaluate: During that quiet time came some contemplation and I began to re-evaluate: My Team – All of my relationships from friendships, professional, those I serve and more. discovered many of my relationships were very one-sided or based on what I could do vs. who I was. I needed to build my Team Kirsten – those who could help fuel me so that I get back to supporting others. My Time – How should I spend my time - My Targets – expand – include all of me – to support and encourage all of you. Out of that re-evaluation came a shift in focus for my podcast. not really a shift, actually, an expansion. New Podcast Introduction - Summarizes it all... You were born with individual strengths and a unique purpose. Don’t let fears, false beliefs, or life’s happenings diminish your influence!  It’s time to Live and Lead for Impact! Host, Kirsten Ross, expert of transformation, will help you Defeat the Drama and Overcome the Trauma that can stop you in your tracks. You’ll gain focus, find confidence, and take bold action…. Unleash passionate, purposeful you! Let’s Go!! I realized that to brand my podcast as Defeat the Drama at Work had me feeling fragmented………I kept bumping up against this wall at the edge of business topics with more that I really wanted to share but didn’t feel like I could and still remain consistent to the brand. Over the past few years I began to feel more and more fragmented as some of my advocacy work took me in different directions with my speaking as well. It was then difficult to feel fully authentic when I spoke on leadership topics. I just wanted to be all of me! It started to feel like an identity crisis……. I’ve always had this call to action or wiring to share what I learn to help others. It goes all the way back to high school. As a result, I live my life on 2 tracks all at once. I live and learn as life happens. However, at the same time, I am also constantly looking objectively at my life and organizing what I’m learning with a plan to share what I’m learning to help others. The wiring has me planning that way and then my innate ability to simplify challenging topics helps me turn it into shareable information. My podcast’s focus on work alone was what had me feeling fractured. I’ll say that I’ve been blessed to have had many experiences throughout life that provide me the opportunity to share from a rich collection of life experiences. I actually recently joked with a friend as she marveled at the wealth of life experiences I’ve had, “Well, I’m really hoping God is satisfied with the material I’m now armed with”….I was kind of joking but kind of not! So…….The strategies I share with others have been used by many of my clients but also by me. Ironically, whenever I start with a new coaching client, one of the first things I share is this, “You are who you are in your life and in your work so we can work on either and we’ll impact both.”  I immediately give license to my clients to be a whole human being SOOOOOO……Why on earth have I been limiting my ability to be whole too and share from my plethora of both work and life experiences? Ultimately, my goal is to help others make a positive impact and I don’t care where it happens! I believe to the depths of my core that we are each put on this earth with a unique purpose and wonderful gifts to share with others. Too often fears, false beliefs and the happenings of life stop us from fulfilling that purpose and we rob the world of us. With this new title and focus I get to be all of me and can also help all of you! Don’t rob the world of you!! I want to help you defeat the drama and overcome the trauma that can block you! Live and Lead for Impact is about making your difference in this world as all of you from the many different roles that you play. How to Guarantee Results for Your Clients

How much could you grow if you could guarantee results for your clients? Because many custom service providers only market their clients’ successes and aren’t honest about the rest, there are a lot of burned clients. And ethical providers tend to be less forward because they’re nervous about over-promising and under-delivering. You can stand out in the crowd by embracing integrity. Then you don’t have to SAY you’re better; you ARE better. Your website Websites in this industry all look the same. Why? For some people, it’s a fear of being different and standing out. For others, it’s a fear of not being taken seriously. In any case, it’s like everybody is designing the same website. Mandi’s advice to help you stand out? Concentrate on copy, not design. Good copy will beat good design any day of the week. All of these websites are talking about their expertise and the solutions they provide. What you should do instead is shift away from yourself and start talking about your clients’ specific problems. Get inside their heads, communicate that you understand what kind of challenges keep them up at night. Only after you’ve talked about their problems do they care about your solution. Be different, be bold, and don’t be afraid to make a big claim. Making big claims A lot of people are afraid to make big claims out of a place of integrity. And while that’s appreciated, the business truth is you are competing against other people who suck, but are willing to make these claims. These people who suck can win business over you. What if you were making claims that you could actually back up? If the fear is that you can’t guarantee results for every client, maybe you shouldn’t be working with the kinds of clients you can’t create results for. What if you only worked with the top 20% of clients who get the very best results? Get enough leads coming in and you can say no to everyone except the best. This shifts the conversation into a sales one, and makes marketing a lot easier. Approach it as, “This is not for everybody, but maybe it’s for you. Maybe we should have a conversation about it, would you be interested in that?” And then it’s a matter of qualifying whether or not you can help them. At that point, sales becomes very easy. Your hook What you want to be doing is solving one problem for one potential type of client, with one customized solution. That’s your hook. How do you find this out? If you have a good body of work to draw from, take a look at your data. What kind of work do you do that produces the best results? Another way is to take a look at your top 20% clients and try to understand what made them successful. What did they have in place? What made it work so well? For some families on the road long-term, putting kids in local schools while traveling becomes an important component of the journey. No, I'm not talking about fancy (and often expensive) international schools, although those can be a good option for some. What I'm talking about are just the regular local schools of a city or country. With local kids speaking and playing in the local language. There are a number of benefits, and it may not be as difficult to do as you think. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. Thank you! ::: Putting Kids in Local Schools While Traveling As many traveling families know, travel and education go hand in hand. There are hundreds of ways to approach education when traveling, but one you may have not thought about before is putting your kids into the local schools of the country you're traveling in. This isn't for everyone, and it doesn't work everywhere. That said you may be surprised at how easy and useful it can be to put your kids into a local school outside of your home country. Related Episodes: Putting Kids in Local Schools This isn't the first episode where I've talked to parents who've enrolled their kids in locals schools. They've put the girls into local schools in both Spain and Mexico so far. When we met in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Stephen and I went out for drinks and soon the topic turned to our experiences putting kids in local schools while traveling. We've done it, and so had Stephen. In fact, there are many episodes of this podcast with guests who have put their kids in local schools. I've had a few requests for more info and Stephen was keen to talk about it, and that' show this episode came to be. TLDR: Main Points of Putting Kids in Local Schools While Traveling Enrolling in local schools can be quite cheap and easy in many countries There are opportunities for local schools in Spain, Mexico, France, Malaysia, New Zealand, India, the Dominican Republic, and more In general, the younger the child, the more opportunities for enrollment Short-term enrollment is easy for primary school-aged kids and younger. Some schools require some paperwork, such as a birth certificate (or a copy of one), while others require almost none. Don't over plan or stress over the preplanning. Some schools work out, some don't. Book accommodation based on convenience to town or whatever you're interested in, rather than accommodation close to the school. List of other episodes with parents putting kids in local schools at the end of the post. Benefits of Putting Kids in Local Schools While Traveling When I suggest putting your kids in a local school, your first question may be "Why?" For many families, the routines of school and work are part of the reason for traveling in the first place. I get that. And I'm not suggesting this route for everyone. That said, both Stephen and I have learned that it added to our travels and relationships in positive ways. Below I break down a few of the reasons why putting kids in local schools can be rewarding: Make Local Friends Kids sometimes need other kids. Putting your kids into a local school gives them an opportunity to interact with children their age. When kids are young (say, 9 or younger), it's much easier to play and have fun without the need for verbal communication. And yet, as they play, your child will be picking up the local language much faster than any textbook could give them. Language Learning Attending locals schools can be a great way to learn a new language. I won't say it's easy at first, but being around local kids is a huge boost to language learning. Sure, kids are sponges and they'll soak up so much from being in a class where only the foreign language is spoken, but it's the playtimes where real progress happens. Time Apart If your family is traveling long-term, then you see a lot of each other. Whether it's for a summer or a year, long-term travel families are with each other 24-7, and that can be draining. This goes double for guys like Stephen and me, who are still working full-time as we move around. Sometimes you need a few hours to knock out a deadline. Sometimes you want to have a leisurely lunch with your wife. By the same token, sometimes the kids need to play games with other kids. Stephen's Experience Putting Kids in Local Schools While Traveling Stephen and Gloria have two adorable daughters, and the oldest, Penelope, was starting school and going to be the youngest in her class. So what Stephen and Gloria decided to do was take a year to travel, studying Spanish along the way. Their first main stop was Seville, Spain, where they put the kids in local Spanish schools. Here they attended a local Montessori school. There were a lot of tears the first week, he says. But by week two, both girls were happy to head to school. As for schools in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, they discovered lots of options once they arrived. In fact, they wouldn't have known just how many options if the school they planned on fell through (details in the podcast). This helped them realize that when putting kids in local schools, don't stress out too hard with the preplanning. For example, their entire plan for the Mexican school fell through, but they were able to find another great option once they arrived. My Experience Putting Kids in Local Schools While Traveling   If you're new to this blog, then you should know that my kids have attended local schools in Japan, Malaysia, and Spain. And they may soon attend local schools in Mexico, as well. That said, each is a different situation. In Japan, they were local kids, as well. Both kids were born there and speak Japanese. In Malaysia, they utilized the Distance Learning Program of an international school on the island of Penang. They weren't actual students at the school, but could use the library and join extracurricular activities. In Spain, they were really thrown into the deep end. We lived in Valencia, Spain for almost two years, and they attended local Spanish schools the entire time. They didn't speak any Spanish when we arrived. None of us did! Yet when we left, both kids had loads of Spanish friends and spoke Spanish quite well. It was tough in the beginning, but it worked out in the end! Korea with kids — this South Korea travel blog post & podcast will get you ready to buy flights! There are many things to do in Korea with kids...or without them. Surprisingly, travel in South Korea hasn't caught on like it has in Japan and China. But we're here to tell you that Korea is a great place to explore. Read on (and listen in!) for Korea travel tips, as well as advice on things to do in Seoul and exploring Korea's beautiful Jeju island. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Thank you! :::   South Korea Travel Blog: Korea Travel Tips Today I talk with Sejal Parekh to hear about travel in South Korea. Sejal and her husband have just spent time in Japan, Korea and now Bali, where we spoke from. In this Epic Education Radio episode, I ask Sejal all about exploring South Korea with kids. We talk about things to do in Seoul with kids, exploring Jeju Island with kids, and more.   IN THIS EPISODE 02:18 Intro convo - Bali plastic 06:47 Intro to Sejal's Family 08:49 Why Korea? Not just kids or families. We discuss why they chose travel in Korea. We also talk about food, accommodation, getting around and more South Korea travel tips. If you're interested in exploring East Asia, then this South Korea travel blog post & podcast should whet your appetite! Why Korea? Why Korea with Kids? When I asked Sejal why they chose to travel in Korea, she explained that it had been on her list for a while. Some of her old coworkers had been and sent back pictures. In addition, we both agreed that Korea is in many ways the "it" place in East Asia right now. In fact, lots of cultural and commercial cues point to Korea. Whether it's in design, in music, in fashion or in the beauty industry, South Korea is at or near the center of many present trends. Another reason why travel in South Korea with kids is worth your time is that it is a very safe and well-run country. The crime rates are extremely low, and the infrastructure is strong. Transportation is fast and effective, and you'll have no problem getting online. Korea and Japan: Travel South Korea with Kids You may already know this, but Korea and Japan are extremely close to each other. Sejal and I talk about how fast and easy it is to get back and forth between the two counties. Flights from Tokyo to Seoul are around 2.5 hours, where flights from Osaka to Seoul are much less. If you're planning to visit Japan (and we certainly recommend that you do), then consider visiting Korea as well. Sejal and her family had just spent over a month in Japan before they visited Korea. Their Korean trip was for three weeks. Yet Sejal says that if they hadn't already booked flights out, they would have extended their stay. Where to Stay in Seoul: South Korea Travel Tips   Their first stop was Seoul. This is the capital of South Korea and (arguably) the most vibrant and dynamic city in the country. Sejal chose the Dongdaemun neighborhood because it had lots of the elements they like in city travel. There were cafes, restaurants, and bars on hand. It also holds the futuristic convention center designed by Zaha Hadid. Things to Do Seoul: South Korea Travel Blog One of their favorite things to do in Seoul was simply to pick a different neighborhood each day to walk through. In addition here are your (fairly touristy) things to do in Seoul with kids and how they felt about them. The Hop-on, Hop-off Bus — Things to Do in Seoul With Kids We have frequently recommended taking the open-top tourist buses in famous locations. This can be a great way to get your bearings in a new city and help you navigate your way later. However, Sejal says that they wouldn't do the hop-on, hop-off bus in Seoul again. Why? For one, it's hard to actually get your bearings because Google Maps don't work in Korea. Therefore, they couldn't orientate themselves as they would have liked to. The DMZ - South Korea Travel Blog Visiting the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) may be considered a "touristy" activity by many. Yet Sejal and her husband found it very interesting and meaningful. In fact, they were there just days before the US President's famous 2018 visit. Sejal describes taking a small tour group. They had excellent guides who told stories of the relationship between North and South Korea. We then talked about how one day Korea's DMZ would be like Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. Hopefully. How nice it would be in the Korean DMZ was nothing more than a tourist attraction. Hongdae One of my favorite things to do in Korea is exploring Seoul's Hongdae District. Occupying the area of several colleges and universities, the Hongdae District is action-packed. Expect lots of cool restaurants, cafes, trendy clothing and design boutiques and more. It is a nightlife area, as well, but extremely lively 24-7. Food & Communication: Things to Do in Korea with Kids Sejal explains that English levels appeared to be lower than in Japan during their experiences in the country. They often ran into language barriers but found people to be very helpful. Eating in Seoul: South Korean Food & Restaurants Sejal recalls several times when they had to skip trying a restaurant because they couldn't read the menu. Unless there were pictures, they didn't risk it. Solo travelers may take the risk more often. However, when traveling with young kids like Sejal is, sometimes it's best to go with what you know. Lots of Korean food is fried and/or meat-based. That said, it's still possible to eat vegetarian in Korea. Many places have veggie-friendly dishes, but you should be prepared to ask for them. Prepare a card with the word "vegetarian" written in Korean. Getting Around Seoul: South Korea Travel Blog Seoul is a very walkable city with a clean, modern and efficient transportation system. Whether you're traveling in Korea with kids or on your own, you'll find many transportation options. Taxis are clean and safe, as well. But here's the thing: English is not widely spoken in South Korea. This can make it tricky talking to taxi drivers and subway attendants. And because of Hangul, Korea's writing system, it can be hard to read a map. Speaking of maps, Sejal explains how Google Maps don't work well in Korea. Instead, most people use Kakao Maps, a local provider. But that means that the maps are often in Korean, which can be tricky to read. Korea's Jeju Island: South Korea Travel Blog   Straight from the megalopolis of Seoul, Sejal and family flew to Jeju Island. Sejal and family found plenty of fun things to do at Jeju Island, which she describes in the podcast. Often called "Honeymoon Island" by South Koreans, Jeju has peaceful beaches, green, pastoral hills, and a thriving art scene. No wonder many South Koreans still choose to take their honeymoon here! In fact, anyone who wants to get away from the gritty urban scene will find Jeju Island to be one of the best places to visit in Korea. How to Get to Jeju Island: Things to Do at Jeju Island Korea This beautiful dot of green is around 70 kilometers south of South Korea's southern border, but it's around a 90-minute flight from Seoul in the north of the country. If you're planning more Korea travel south of the capital, then consider a variety of ferries that leave from ports along the southern border. Most people, however, may find the flying from Seoul to Jeju Island works best for their Korea travel itinerary. Things to Do at Jeju Island: South Korea Travel Tips   There are loads of things to do in Seoul, Busan, and other major Korean cities. However, Jeju Island attractions are also varied and appealing. When looking for things to do at Jeju Island, Sejal and family discovered great beaches, nature trails and much more. "I thought it would just be a pretty island with beaches," she says, "but it was all that and much more." There are other great things to do at Jeju Island besides exploring the shoreline. Jeju Island has loads of natural beauty past the beaches. For example, there are lots of hillside trails and waterfalls in the interior. On the cultural side, Sejal recommends visiting the Jeju Art Village. Here, she was surprised and impressed by the variety and quality of art on display. Sejal is also interested in the beauty industry. She discovered that many of the leading Korean beauty products originate in Jeju Island's volcanic soil. Haenyeo Divers: Things to Do at Jeju Island One of the most interesting things to do at Jeju Island for Sejal was to visit the Haenyeo divers. These all-women diving groups are part of a matriarchal society on Jeju Island. In fact, they listed by UNESCO as "intangible cultural heritage." Unfortunately, most divers are now in the 50's or all the way up to their 80's. With this in mind, it's entirely possible that this cultural tradition may not exist in the next generation. Getting Around Jeju Island: Korea with Kids Originally, Sejal and family planned to hire a rental car on Jeju Island. Thanks to high fees and complications with their driver's licenses, they went with bicycles and local buses. And they're glad they did. They took local buses all over. They also easily rented a bicycle with a child's seat, which made for some fun exploring Jeju Island. Exploring things to do at Jeju Island was “very manageable without a car," she says, "despite what other people will tell you." Where to Stay on Jeju Island: South Korea Travel Tips When looking for where to stay on Jeju Island, Sejal and family decided to avoid resorts. Instead, they chose a "modern" hotel...with mixed results. According to Sejal, she felt that South Korean tourism is on the tipping point of something good. However, it's not there just yet. While their room wasn't bad, there were a few things she wished were different. If they return again, she explains, then they would look for a guesthouse, Airbnb or another arrangement. Know Any Fun Things to Do in Korea? If you combine both Sejal's and my time in Korea, we've only spent a little over a month in the country in our individual trips. Sejal saw lots of Seoul and Jeju Island. In contrast, I've only visited one district in Seoul a few times. That's why we need your help. We want this South Korea travel blog post to be more comprehensive. What are some great things to do in South Korea? Tell us things to do in Seoul. Tell us things to do in Busan. Give us details on things to do at Jeju Island and beyond. Where else should we explore?     Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. This is constructed road-trip style, since driving in the Yucatan is safe and easy. Even so, this same trip could happen via buses, taxis, or personal drivers. We visit the Coba Ruins. We explore Yucatan cenotes, and we swim with turtles in Akumal. And of course, we do what everyone should do on a Yucatan vacation: swim, eat well and relax. What else would you expect from one of the best road trips in Mexico? Why Yucatan Vacation? Why is it the Best Road Trip in Mexico? Rob and I both think that a Yucatan Vacation is home to some of the best road trips in Mexico. Why? For one, the Yucatan's roads are flat with good signage and infrastructure. Secondly, it's easy to pick up a car rental at Cancun's International airport. In addition, Rob explains the benefits of traveling in the Yucatan with kids. He describes it as an ideal marriage between history, culture, and nature. The Yucatan Peninsula is part of Mexico, but it has its own unique culture, that is infused with its Mayan past. Sure, there are great restaurants, beautiful beaches, and abundant wildlife. But you also have the Mayan culture, seen both in the dozens of archaeological sites but also living within the locals. The Yucatan also has unique flora and fauna. Especially fauna. There are dolphins off the coast and flamingos in Rio Logartos and Celestun. There are the turtles in Akumal, as well as tropical fish when snorkeling. Then there are monkeys, crocodiles, deer and more. And did we mention the turtles in Akumal? Yucatan Road Trip: Start in Cancun For our Yucatan road trip itinerary, we start in Cancun. This is a major tourist hub, with massive hotels and entertainment complexes. Cancun is also where the Peninsula's largest international airport is. For most people, this is the best place to fly into. For Rob and his family, the Yucatan vacation starts soon after landing. They leave the airport and, after picking up a rental car, go straight to the beach. Before they leave Cancun, they visit a few of the Mayan ruins in or near the city. That's right: there are Mayan ruins in Cancun! Visiting Mayan ruins are certainly one of the best things to do in the Yucatan peninsula, and even Cancun has them. The most famous Mayan ruins in Cancun are places like San Miguel and El Rey. They are probably not far from your Cancun hotel. Things to Do in Akumal - Turtles in Akumal After some beach time and the Mayan ruins in Cancun, Rob suggests heading south. One of his favorite destinations is Akumal. One of the most famous things to do here is swim with the turtle in Akumal, and that's what Rob recommends here. He has been several times and has always seen turtles in Akumal. In fact, he talked about the last time he was there he "only" saw eight turtles in Akumal. At other times, he saw nearly twice that many. Akumal is his favorite place for snorkeling in Mexico. Swimming with turtles in Akumal is awesome, but another of the best things to do in Akumal is to visit Cenote Yal Ku. Only a short drive from Akumal, Cenote Yal Ku is both freshwater and saltwater, as the cenote opens up into a lagoon. That means you get sea life like parrot fish and angelfish in what is usually a freshwater swimming spot. Yucatan Cenotes Rob said that Cenote Yal Ku was one of his favorite cenotes in the Yucatan, but what are Yucatan cenotes? I certainly didn't know about Yucatan cenotes before we visited Mexico. A cenote is a freshwater sinkhole, part of a vast underground water system that is unique to the Yucatan Peninsula. The water is fresh, clean and mostly underground. Some Yucatan cenotes are open to the sun, while others are in caves with little light from above. Rob talks about some of his favorite Yucatan cenotes — a crucial part of our road trip in Mexico That said, keep in mind that these Yucatan cenotes aren't free. Some of the most famous large Yucatan cenotes on the east coast of the peninsula cost USD $10 or more, per person. On the other hand, many Yucatan cenotes in the interior or west coast cost as little as a dollar. It's also worth remembering that no sunscreen or mosquito repellant is allowed in Yucatan cenotes. The chemicals can damage the fragile ecosystems there, so if you're prone to burns or bites, cover up. Mayan Ruins in Mexico If you want to see Mayan Ruins in Mexico, then you're headed to the Yucatan. It's a huge part of what makes the peninsula one of the best road trips in Mexico. In fact, one of the best things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula — with or without kids — is visiting the Mayan ruins. Rob started with the Mayan ruins in Cancun, surrounded by hotels and high-rises. But he didn't stop there. We talked about many others, including the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum. Rob's favorite, however, is the Coba Ruins, which are inland. Deep in the Yucatan jungle, the Coba Ruins in Mexico are massive and largely intact. And as Rob explains, travelers can still climb the pyramids here. Places like Chichen Itza no longer allow climbers, but places like Uxmal and the Coba Ruins in Mexico still allow you to reach the top. Rob talks about his experience in the podcast. More of the Best Things to Do in the Yucatan Peninsula These are only a few things we discuss in our hour-long conversation about things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula. Listen in and hear Rob talk about flamingos in Rio Logartos, Cathedrals in Valladolid, restaurants in Holbox and much, much more. Listen in and you'll understand why we think that one of the best road trips in Mexico starts at the Mayan ruins in Cancun and covers the Yucatan Peninsula. Have You Had a Yucatan Vacation? A world class comedian who is not out to get laughs. He is out to “give people the opportunity to laugh” and help set the stage for meaningful, purposeful content of the heart and soul. His personal mission is to “comedically inspire people to walk in purpose”. He is accomplishing this in massive numbers while on stage with The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel, BET, Comedy Central, Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday and Tedx Talks. He will shortly be in a movie theater near you in a starring role for the feature film, “Selfie Dad”. Here is a novelty, he is a top ranked comedian who has no need or use for crude and vulgar jokes, imagine that. You will hear in the show how he views all of us, in living our lives, we are preparing and setting the stage. Why? For the punchline of our lives. The deliverable. Without that, it is simply a life of always preparing but never coming to the table with an offering. Nobody in The Ziglar audience desires this. So listen in to this interview and we believe you will be significantly inspired and empowered to do just that - Deliver. Connect with Michael at www.MichaelJR.com.
