When Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers first released in 1993, it was not a crack commercial hit. It did however instantly earn itself widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its dark and disturbing story, foreboding atmosphere, and incredible voice acting. The game brought the setting of 90's Louisiana to life, with all the colonial baggage and real life voodoo history integrated into every little crevice of its world. But can Gabriel Knight truly get over the ultimate sin of being a point and click adventure game? Can voodoo be taken seriously after Monkey Island spent so much time satirising the concept? Is this game as scary or intense all these years later? Or has the passage of time left the narrative of Gabriel Knight without any bite?On this episode, we discuss:Aesthetics. We played two different versions of Gabriel Knight - the original, and the 2014 remake. Is one of these clearly better than the other, or do they each have their strengths and weaknesses?Story. How does the narrative unravel in Gabriel Knight? Is having a slow burn story a good way to keep the player invested? How does structuring the game into days affect how the story is told?Gameplay. How logical are Gabriel Knight's puzzles? Does having the game split into days affect the clarity of what you're meant to accomplish each day? Does the game avoid the fundamental issues that Pat and James have with the genre? We answer these questions and many more on the 105th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherGK 1993 OST: Robert HolmesGK 2014 OST: Robert Holmes Are our critiques of the point and click adventure game puzzles valid? What do the sequels change or improve from the original? Is there a different adventure game out there that we should try? This is CERTAINLY a BOOK. Written by Jane Jensen and based on the video game of the same name, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers tells the story about a terrible writer who decides to investigate the Voodoo Murders in New Orleans. It goes places. As a Content Warning the depictions of Voodoo and the black residents of New Orleans leaves a lot to be desired. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, feel free to skip this series! Additionally: if the mix sounds weird it's because I'm migrating to some different software and I don't quiiite have all my ducks in a row yet. Forcing myself to learn new things to free myself from Adobe's grasp.
Jesse joins Kevin and Phil once again to talk movies. This episode we are getting into the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, a weird flick featuring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the titular brothers. Content Warning: There's a 9/11 joke toward the end of the episode, so, if that isn't your cup o' tea feel free to skip! Next week kicks off our next series, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers.

This episode is less about just one game, but about game design itself. In this mammoth episode the boys go in depth on what it's like to play a game from 1993 in 2021 and how that translates for a busy gamer. Point and Click adventure titles seem to have dwindled in recent years, but how does a compelling tale about ancient African religions and German monster hunters hold up? The boys discuss the standardized verb systems used with games in that time, and the methodology of game direction. With a stellar cast of Tim Curry, Mark Hamill, Leah Remini, Virginia Capers and more, this point & click adventure title features Gabriel Knight, a budding novelist in New Orleans, investigating serial killings which is staged as acts of voodoo, but as he researches deeper, the possibility that voodoo is real starts to unfurl. We also dive into a small touch of PlayStation 5 and Monster Hunter: Rise. Time for the boys to get wrapped up in a spooky mystery in the bayou with the Sierra classic Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Gabriel Knight is a full-time author part-time sleaze bag living in New Orleans. While researching Voodoo for his next book, Gabe gains in interest in a series of brutal murders playing out in the city. After a little snooping, he finds that the murders are being carried out by a supernatural cult and, worse yet, the cult has a bloody connection to his own ancestors. Now, Gabriel has to scramble to get to the bottom of this mystery before a ritual dagger gets to the bottom of his rib cage! Support the show at https://www.patreon.com/HyperbolicGameChamber
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and special guests Jane Jensen (Writer/Designer of the Gabriel Knight Trilogy) + Tyler Smith (Host of Battleship Pretension) discuss the Gabriel Knight trilogy of computer games. A thriller writer becomes embroiled in a supernatural world that is not unlike the very novels he writes. One of Sierra's darker franchises, the Gabriel Knight games combined the sexiness and love of historical detail of an Anne Rice novel with the gothic romance of the Hammer Horror films of the 1960s and 1970s. Characters had actual arcs. Yes, there was violence, but what's more notable is how sex is treated in an adult way in these games. Jane Jensen released a remake of the first game entitled Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition with new voice-acting without the all-star Hollywood talent of the original. Jensen now writes gay romance novels under the pen name Eli Easton with over 30 titles to her name. Huge thanks to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode. Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross investigate Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. It’s no secret: We love adventure games. And we’ve done a lot of them recently. However, we’ve never done a Sierra adventure game, of which Gabriel Knight is probably the best. Funky accents aside, it’s got great dialogue, clever puzzles, and explores a subject that’s been mostly ignored by games: Voodoo. A little late, but here I am with episode 14! This time around we chat about the great paranormal mystery adventure game series, Gabriel Knight. As usual though, the news: Project Eternity is a kickstarter RPG made in the vein of late 90's PC RPG's like Icewind Dale and Planetscape: Torment. If you like that style of game, check it out! Sword of Fargoal 2 is an attempt (again on kickstarter) to bring back the Sword of Fargoal roguelike dungeon crawler from the Commodore 64. Again, if this type of game is your bag, give it a look! Finally, in Steam news, the demo for the new X-COM: Enemy Unknown game is available for download. The full game is due to release on October 9th, 2012. We then have two great listener emails where we go back and chat a bit about Command & Conquer. Now, on to our main topic for the week, Sierra's Gabriel Knight series. I go into great detail about the first game, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. We talk story, gameplay, tech focus and the rest. In dev story I go into the rest of the games in the series as well. I end off with a live performance of some soundtrack music from the first game. You can get all three GK games on GoG.com: Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned Next time, we check out an interesting 1993 tactical strategy series, Syndicate. Hope to see you then!
Talking about intros in games, reviews of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and Tiny Bang Story, Deliver-rants, and even more new segments!
