Steph Devery shares her experiences from a solo cycle tour through Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Steph set off from Gibralter in June 2021. When she left on that day she'd never ridden a bike long distance, but with an appetite for adventure and no fixed timelines, she began a trip that would ultimately take her to the very tip of Southern Africa at the Cape of Good Hope. A total distance of 21,500km and through 40 countries, to say this cycle tour was an adventure is a real understatement Steph's experiences on this journey lasting 2 years and 7 months were incredible and she navigated through setbacks which would give many an excuse not to continue. A serious knee injury in the French Alps put her tour on hold, but her resolve to continue this journey never wavered. She cycled through the Middle East, and is the first Australian woman to cycle through Saudi Arabia. As her adventures crossed over into Africa and Sudan she was swept up by the incredible hospitality of the Sudanese people. When war unexpectedly broke out while she was in Khartoum, she took shelter with a family for 10 days before evacuated by the French Military. Arriving in Paris without her bicycle or many of her possessions, many would put an end to the adventure. But not Steph. She was still determined to continue with her trip, and after 2 months, she arrived in Zanzibar to continue her journey through Africa. 7 months of pure adventure followed, and hearing her recount the incredible stories from her African experience was a pure joy. Be sure to follow Steph to keep up with her future adventures. Not the most exciting international break for England fans, as they failed to wow us in both games, but there was still all to play for in the Euro qualifiers for the other British teams. Unfortunately, the British territory of Gibralter did get battered 14-0 by France though. We also discuss the big topics of the past week including Everton's points deduction and the PL vote on loan players from associated clubs, which heavily favours Louis' Newcastle right now. Finally, we look ahead to the PL returning, with a thigh rubber of a curtain raiser in City v Liverpool and the first IFD Derby of the season as Newcastle face Chelsea. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 24th, 2021.The New York Times reports a researcher in Seattle uncovered deleted files that show 13 partial genetic sequences for some of the earliest cases of COVID-19 in Wuhan. They don't reveal the true origin of the virus but do firm up the idea it was circulating earlier than the outbreak at the Wuhan seafood market. About a year ago 241 genetic sequences from coronavirus patients went missing from an online database maintained by the National Institutes of Health. The researcher could find no scientific or procedural reason why the sequences were deleted. No need to worry about getting shot number three yet. The CDC said there's no evidence yet to suggest a booster shot is needed. They did caution that could change as the pandemic evolves. If cases go up in fully vaccinated people or if waning antibody or T cell levels are identified, that could signal a booster need.A new study estimates life expectancy in the U.S. went down nearly two years between 2018 and 2020, mostly due to COVID-19. It's a decrease not seen since World War II. The declines were most pronounced among minority groups. In 2018, average life expectancy was about 79 years. It's now around 77.If someone tells you they wouldn't take the vaccine for a million dollars, believe them. The Ohio vaccine lottery started off with promising results, but it ended yesterday with the state still unable to crack the 50% vaccination threshold. For some, and we're not judging, it's the surest sign yet the pandemic is over. A Harvard health policy professor said, “We knew this was going to be bad, but I don't think even those of us who work in this area thought it was going to be this bad.” Canada will start relaxing its quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated U.S. residents July 5. Those regulations have been in place for 15 months. But it's still only for authorized travel. Nonessential travel is still prohibited even though the northern US has a partial vaccination rate over 70% — similar to Canada's, and Canada's vaccination program is much slower than the United States'. Researchers in England are trying to find out if the flu shot and a Covid vaccine can be given at the same time. If so, that could save resources for healthcare providers and make things more convenient for consumers. Flu cases were basically non-existent last winter but it's assumed with restrictions being lifted, a resurgence of flu viruses can be expected. We've heard about various groups who are most reluctant to get vaccinated but one group leads the way in vaccine acceptance. Doctors. A survey by the American Medical Association shows 96% of practicing physicians have been fully vaccinated. And of the 4% who aren't yet, only 1.8% plan on never getting the vaccine. In the United States cases were down 21%, deaths are down 20%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days.
Eddie and I discuss the weather in Austria and England, with new snow in Austria it prompted Eddie to tell me he had called his good friend Arleen in Colorado who is amongst other things, a member of the Voluntary Firebrigade and due to the heavy snowfall that Colorado had, helped put out a huge forest fire at Cameron Peak near Walden. Eddie recalled Arleen taking him to a Rodeo in nearby Walden, small dwelling with 550 inhabitants, 2 bars one on either side of the street and a subsequent fight between drinkers in middle of the street from each bar! Aged 16 years plus,Eddie had left his Grammer School and taken up a trainee's position at Hoover Limited in Bradford Yorkshire, the year was 1956. This meant a bus journey from Harrogate on a daily basis where he and his friend would sing throughout the whole journey on the back seat of the upper deck. In May/June of this same year, Eddie signed up for the armed forces requesting to be in the Navy as he liked the idea of being on ship's, something he would rue after discovering that he was very often seasick when on boats later in life. The recruiting Officer made it clear that there were no vacancies for the Navy, but there were for the Royal Marines, Eddie agreed after he was assured there would be an element of boat travel in the Marines. Whilst awaiting further contact from the Marines, Eddie was able to continue in his trainee job at Hoover Limited until the day arrived when a train ticket arrived in the Post, a journey from Harrogate to Lympstone near Exeter to the Commando training centre. Eddie's recalls the train arriving from North East England pulling into Harrogate train station where both his parents came to see him off, his father running a business in the town. There appeared to be a rowdy bunch of youths on this train, unbeknown to Eddie were a group of young men heading to their base at an RAF camp in the south. Eddie remembers giving his mum a hug,and giving his Dad a peck on the cheek in full view of the young and lively RAF group! The RAF group soon gave up giving Eddie stick when they discovered he was going to be a Commando! Eddie's train took a very long time to get to the south of England arriving at Bristol Parkway at 4 am whereupon Eddie had to wait a further 3-4 hours before the onward train arrived. From Lympstone train station Trucks brought the new recruits to the Commando training camp. The next day Eddie and others were shown the army assault course whereupon Eddie made it known that he was supposed to being placed on a ship, not so said the CO,not if youve been seconded to the Marines! To Eddie's surprise he eventually got fitter and mastered the tough expectation of the Commando traing course lasting 6 weeks in Lympstone, then a further 6 weeks in Bickley, several of his colleagues never made it through the Lympstone course, the Bickly course was tougher still but Eddie came through. Eddie was to see military action sooner than he had imagined, seconded to Cypress where the Commando's were to deal with terrorists causing problems in the otherwise British rule on the island. Arrival in Cyprus came via Malta and Gibralter, the fun during the 3 months of Commando training was all about to come to an end, in Cyprus Eddie's life was also on the line once arriving on New Years day in 1957. The area of Paphos, Nicosia and the Taurus Mountains was where the Commandos were to operate. Whilst there Eddie bought his first ever guitar for a bar of military soap and a tin of Beans! One evening Eddie was on guard duty and came into the barracks for a cup of tea and heard an engaging musical sound coming out of the radio, it was Lonny Donegan and band, Eddie realised that this is what his heart was telling him to do, the lure of music making and showbusiness had begun to have an effect. Eddie and pals were to play and entertain the soldiers during their stay. Eddie and skiffle band drove 16 miles to Nicosia in their 3 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message

Scott recounts a bizarre set of events when he and his girlfriend/mate are asked to relieve a perfidious captain of his command. What seemed like a simple thing turns into a nightmare. A scoundrel, like a rich owner trying to save a dime, a captain with an angle to steal a yacht, a mate with amazing language and fighting skills, and an American friend who likes to swing for the fences. A bizarre story of sabotage, lying, suitcase of cash, and a dysfunctional family. Oh! Earlier this week we sat down with Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, president of Wells College in Aurora, New York. Last week, he made headlines with a letter plainly stating that if the College cannot welcome back students in the fall that they will be forced to close. The economic fallout and realities brought on by the Coronavirus Pandemic have put every organization on alert. Today, part of our conversation with Dr. Gibralter about Wells College, and what's next.
Last week Wells College President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter published a stunning letter, which left the college- and regional community in shock. It simply said: If students cannot return on-campus this fall – Wells College will not survive. He assumed the presidency in 2015; and it’s safe to say that this letter was the most-significant of … Continue reading Wells College President Jonathan Gibralter talks future, possible closure .::. Lots of crap this week, we talk about chocolate eggs being the most important part of the bible and going to war to defend the monkeys of Gibralter. I have a rant about Simon Heffer and it seems like there has been a coup. https://youtu.be/NHA96jS9Prw for the letters from the Gibraltan front https://twitter.com/WDTATW_Podcast
In our fifth episode we deal with the Lectionary texts for Christmas Eve, Year A: Isaiah 9:2-7, Titus 2:11-14, Luke 2:1-20. Show Notes: The first thing to learn in this prophecy of Isaiah is that a child is born to you and is your child…. We must accentuate the word “us” and write it large. That is, when you hear, “A child has been born to us, make the two letters US as large as heaven and earth and say, “The child is born, it is true; but for whom is he born: Unto US, for US he is born, says the prophet.” Luther continues, “God allowed this child to be born for the sake of condemned and lost sinners. Therefore, hold out your hand, lay hold of it, and say, “True, I am godless and wicked, there is nothing good in me, nothing but sin, vice, depravity, death, devil, and hellfire; against all this, however, I set this child whom the Virgin Mary has in her lap and at her breast. For since he is born for me, that he might be my treasure, I accept this child and set him over against everything I do not have.” Luther concludes, “For what can the devil with all his evil tricks do to the Christian who lays hold on these words in all seriousness and firm faith? For though such a Christian be tempted by the devil, he can easily oppose him and say, 'Devil, are you listening? Do you know that a child has been born? Yes, indeed, do you know that he was born for us, that is, for me?' That’s when the devil has to back off. -Martin Luther Only Christ can make our inward heart fit to see God. -St. John of Chrysostom But the most obvious fact about praise—whether of God or anything—strangely escaped me. […] I had never noticed that all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise unless (sometimes even if) shyness or the fear of boring others is deliberately brought in to check it.” In other words, whenever you enjoy something, you have to praise it. See? The world rings with praise—lovers praising their mistresses, readers their favorite poet, walkers praising the countryside … praise of weather, wines, dishes, actors, motors, horses, colleges … children, flowers, mountains … I had not noticed how the humblest, and at the same time most balanced and capacious, minds, praised most, while the cranks, misfits and malcontents praised least. The good critics found something to praise in many imperfect works; the bad ones continually narrowed the list of books we might be allowed to read. The healthy and unaffected man … could praise a very modest meal: the dyspeptic and the snob found fault with all.… praise almost seems to be inner health made audible. -C.S. Lewis, Reflections On The Psalms ‘In those days,’ says Luke, ‘there went out a decree from the Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered.’ These words have become so well known, through constant repetition in carol services, that we may perhaps be forgiven for not stopping to reflect on what Luke is trying to tell us, here and throughout his work. In one short paragraph (2:1–14) he moves from the great Emperor in Rome to the new King who was to rule the world. There is no question, for Luke, as to which one makes the angels sing. As we look at this story, which we know so well and yet so little, we may catch a glimpse of what we might mean when we say: Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory. By the time Jesus was born, Augustus had already been monarch of all he surveyed for a quarter of a century. He was the King of kings, ruling a territory that stretched from Gibralter to Jerusalem, from Britain to the Black Sea. He had done what no-one had done for two hundred years before him had achieved: he had brought peace to the whole wider Roman world. Peace, I grant you, at a price: a price paid, in cash, by subjects in far-off lands, and, in less obvious ways, by those who mourned the old Republic. Power was now concentrated in the hands of one man, whose kingdom stretched from shore to shore. And, as Arnaldo Momigliano, one of the greatest of ancient historians, once put it, ‘[Augustus] gave peace, as long as it was consistent with the interests of the Empire and the myth of his own glory’. There you have it in a nutshell: the whole ambiguous structure of human empire, a kingdom of absolute power, bringing glory to the man at the top, and peace to those on whom his favour rested. Yes, says Luke, and watch what happens now. This man, this king, this absolute monarch, lifts his little finger in Rome, and fifteen hundred miles away in an obscure province a young couple undertake a hazardous journey, resulting in the birth of a child in a little town that just happens to be the one mentioned in the ancient Hebrew prophecy about the coming of the Messiah. And it is at this birth that the angels sing of glory and peace. Which is the reality, and which the parody? -N.T. Wright, The Lord and His Prayer ...prayerful reflection, reading Old and New Testaments in the light of one another, filled this lacuna at a very early stage by pointing to Is 1: 3: “The ox knows its owner, and the ass its master’s crib; but Israel does not know, my people does not understand.” Peter Stuhlmacher points out that the Greek version of Hab 3: 2 may well have contributed here: “In the midst of two living creatures you will be recognized … when the time has come, you will appear” (cf. Die Geburt des Immanuel, p. 52). The two living creatures would appear to refer to the two cherubs on the mercy-seat of the Ark of the Covenant (cf. Ex 25: 18– 20), who both reveal and conceal the mysterious presence of God. So the manger has in some sense become the Ark of the Covenant, in which God is mysteriously hidden among men, and before which the time has come for “ox and ass”— humanity made up of Jews and Gentiles— to acknowledge God. Through this remarkable combination of Is 1: 3, Hab 3: 2, Ex 25: 18– 20 and the manger, the two animals now appear as an image of a hitherto blind humanity which now, before the child, before God’s humble self-manifestation in the stable, has learned to recognize him, and in the lowliness of his birth receives the revelation that now teaches all people to see. Christian iconography adopted this motif at an early stage. No representation of the crib is complete without the ox and the ass. After this brief digression, let us return to the text of the Gospel. “Mary gave birth to her first-born son,” we read in Lk 2: 7. What does this mean? -Pope Benedict XVI, Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives
