As the United Kingdom strives to maintain a credible strategic deterrent in the face of Russian aggression – including threats from President Vladimir Putin to ‘go nuclear' due to alleged Western interference in the Ukraine War - our guest on the podcast is Dr David Blagden. Together with podcast host Iain Ballantyne he considers the case for augmenting the UK's sea-based Trident missile force. Among other things, Iain wonders if a driver might be the sheer stress imposed on the Royal Navy's (RN's) ballistic missile submarines by very long patrols. Bearing in mind developments such as Moscow changing its nuclear doctrine yet again - in response to Ukraine using long-range missiles inside Russia itself - do the UK and France (as Europe's nuclear weapons powers) and also the USA - need to place more focus on ‘sub-strategic' potential? And what does that mean? Is it too dangerous to even contemplate due to the difficulty in knowing whether or not a Trident submarine is launching a full-scale strategic nuclear missile or a lower yield sub-strategic strike? Iain asks if the West's nuclear deterrent as a whole has been invalidated by the Ukraine War. Moscow was not deterred from invading Ukraine. But, there again, it has refrained from unleashing its entire military power and has not made a direct move against NATO, or used nukes…yet. And are European powers, with their comparatively weak conventional forces, in danger of relying on nuclear weapons as a first line of defence rather than a last resort? Finally, as we possibly head towards some kind of negotiated end to the Ukraine War under the new Trump presidency, where is UK and European defence going and will Britain's Strategic Defence Review (SDR) rise to the occasion? Shortly before the podcast episode was recorded the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) revealed more naval cuts – months before the results of the SDR are announced. Being axed are a frigate, two amphibious warfare command ships and a pair of Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) tankers. Iain and David discuss those development too and their implications. •The next (January 2025) edition of ‘Warships IFR' is published on 20.12.24 in the UK and also deployed globally. Back for a second discussion of hot topics are guests Dr Gary Blackburn and Dr David Blagden. With host Iain Ballantyne, they weigh up the prospect of European NATO nations being forced to cope with a bigger burden of defence, if a re-elected President Trump decides to to pull American land forces out of the Continent. It is a policy that is being called ‘Dormant NATO' by some commentators. They also consider whether or not the confrontation between missile-firing Houthi rebels and Western navies in the Red Sea is becoming a forgotten contest, with warships that were once committed to protecting sea trade now diverted elsewhere. With European taxpayers getting a subsidy on their own defence - due to the USA carrying the NATO burden - it is suggested that (even if America did not pull out or scale back forces in annoyance) its strategic and military rivalry with China - which is building a huge navy - may force Washington to concentrate even more on Asia-Pacific. In discussing the fact that certain sanctions on Russia, for invading Ukraine in 2022, may be less than waterproof, the subject of whether to directly confront Moscow or stick to a long, hard policy of containment - in ‘Cold War 2' - is also touched upon by the trio. •The next (July) edition of Warships IFR is published on June 21 in the UK and globally. Our guests for this episode are Dr Gary Blackburn and Dr David Blagden who, with host Iain Ballantyne, discuss a recent proposal by the UK Government to introduce a new National Service scheme for 18-year-olds. Iain asks if it is just a case of blatant electioneering by the incumbent Sunak administration, which looks set to lose a summer General Election to the Labour Party? Or does the proposal offer some merit amid a recruitment crisis for the Royal Navy? Likewise, was the other recent big defence announcement by the Conservative government - of taking Defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030 - another gambit to try and win votes? Also discussed is the state of the Royal Navy, with frigate and destroyer levels now cut to just 15 and yet with warnings of the UK being confronted by a pre-war state. Things may improve in the 2030s, with new warships entering service, but in the meantime it leaves Britain with a small, tired ‘jam tomorrow' Navy. The effect of sea blindness is also touch upon during the conversation. And can drones really replace people and warships? Or are they just a seductive illusion? This is just the first helping of discourse between the trio as in the next episode – out very soon – they tackle the topics of ‘Dormant NATO' (under a possible second Trump presidency), the wars in the Red and Black seas and whether to directly confront Russia or contain that nuclear state. •The next (July) edition of Warships IFR is published on June 21 in the UK and globally. News of artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. We seem to be on the cusp of a revolution in how the latest AI models will change our lives – and health and care could be at the centre of those changes. AI will transform medicine, AI will allow doctorless screening and personalised prevention, AI will boost productivity, AI will make thousands of jobs redundant – so go all the claims. But is this hype or real hope? How will AI transform health and care services and the experiences of staff and patients? What's been the progress so far? And how best to move forward safely? And with growing demand, staff shortages and a public spending squeeze, could AI be a key answer to sustaining the NHS itself? To discuss, our chief executive Dr Jennifer Dixon is joined by: Professor Sir John Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and an adviser to the government on life sciences strategy, and to Sir Patrick Vallance's current review of how to regulate emerging technologies. About our guests Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City University London's Centre for Food Policy Tim Lang has been Professor of Food Policy at City University London's Centre for Food Policy since 2002. He founded the Centre in 1994. After a PhD in social psychology at Leeds University, he became a hill farmer in the 1970s in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire which shifted his attention to food policy, where it has been ever since. For years, he's engaged in academic and public research and debate about its direction, locally to globally. His abiding interest is how policy addresses the mixed challenge of being food for the environment, health, social justice, and citizens. What is a good food system? How is ours measured and measuring up? His current research interests are (a) sustainable diets, (b) the meaning of modern food security and (c) the implications of Brexit for the food system. Jo Churchill MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Prevention, Public Health and Primary Care Jo Churchill was brought up in East Anglia and, before moving to Suffolk two years ago, lived and worked in the rural county of Lincolnshire, with her husband and four daughters. Her early career started in retail for both regional and global brands and led her into site development and the building industry. Since 1994, she has run two successful contracting companies. In July 2016, she was elected, with joint highest nominations to join the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). In July 2016, she was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Rt Hon Mike Penning MP, Minister of State for Armed Forces. In 2017, she was appointed PPS to Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for the Department of Health. In 2018, she was appointed to Assistant Government Whip in HM Government. In 2019, she was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Prevention, Public Health and Primary Care in HM Government. Chris Venables, Head of Politics, Green Alliance Chris runs Green Alliance's Political Leadership theme. He works to build the political momentum for bold and ambitious political action on the climate and nature crises. He manages the Climate leadership programme for MPs and joint UK-focused advocacy work with business and civil society. He previously worked in the Houses of Parliament as the campaigns and political lead for Green Party MP Caroline Lucas on environmental issues. Before that, he led the work for the global health charity Medact on social and economic justice and worked in Brussels for a foreign policy think tank. He has been involved in grassroots organising and campaigning for over a decade. He has a BA in politics from the University of York. Dr Michael Clark, Researcher, Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford Mike's research interests include the environmental, economic, and health impacts of food systems. He uses models to provide quantitative estimates on the current and projected impacts of the food system, as well as the potential benefits of changing the food system (e.g. by changing diets, or the rate at which yields increases). Mike joined the Centre on Population Approaches for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention in August 2018, and is working on expanding the Centre's food system model to incorporate biodiversity and economic outcomes in collaboration with the Wellcome funded projected "Livestock, Environment and People", as well as with researchers from other departments across Oxford and international collaborators. Mike holds a PhD in Natural Resources Science and Management from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and studied biology and ecology at undergraduate level.
In today's episode Adrian Lawrence one of our CFO's discusses the new Department for International Trade grant to boost SME's exports, its a match funded grant of between £1,000 and £9,000 being 40% or 50% of eligible spend depending on the location of your business. What it supports are things such as attending international trade shows, Geo-targeted SEO, professional fees and related areas such as Intellectual property and translation services. The process is to first speak with an advisor who acts as a filter, typically they let you know after the first meeting if your application or project is eligible. If it is then over a couple of subsequent meetings they work with you to build up your application, sometimes drawing in specialists from within the Department of International trade to assist, such as SEO experts, or translators. Then once your application is ready for submission they generate a link which your then use to submit the application with. Because each application is pre-screened in this way, the actual approval process is really fast, typically just one or two days to get approved. Funding is paid only at the end, when all tasks are completed, which can be a couple of years ahead. The benefit of this approach is that only companies with realistic export plans, and companies that are robust in the first place, so not small scale companies or start-ups, get approved. This makes sense for all parties concerned, companies can be reasonably sure of success if they spend the time to work with the advisor, and HM Government only funds viable projects. It is a win win for all concerned. Its a great scheme and the team at FD Capital have already gotten our first client application approved. In today's episode Adrian Lawrence one of the CFO's from FD Capital's team talks about a grant which is available to support SME businesses that are facing challenges with the new Brexit rules and regime. The grant covers training and or professional fees, which if you are an FD or CFO with a personal services company and registered with your institute as a firm means you can offer the service directly to your client and potentially be eligible for the grant. The maximum grant is £2,000 which whilst modest is easy to apply for and is administered by PWC. To learn more about the SME Brexit Support fund read our blog post on the topic here https://www.fdcapital.co.uk/sme-brexit-support-fund Whilst the headline story of Brexit is that of a free trade agreement with the EU, the reality is more complex, if the goods you import have a country of Origin outside of the Europe then you not only pay duty on bringing them into the UK, but again on exporting them from the UK to EU, this means double duties which if the % involved is high, can wipe out your profit margin. This Brexit support grant allows you to get advice on how to adapt your business and trade arrangements to adjust to this new reality It's a great example of how HM Government is attempting to ease some of the challenges that Brexit has brought with it. Hm Government vs Acid House 1988 - 1990The third in a series of podcasts deep diving the printed media's reporting on Acid House and the people attending events. The sensationalised headlines were mostly written by anonymous journalists, although the named journo's were just as ferocious. The style of reporting we've since witnessed when the state moves to shutdown a national threat. Hundreds of articles were constructed to misinform the general public so laws and governmental powers to curb the assembly of people could be fast-tracked into play.Host: Wayne Anthony (Genesis'88 / Class of 88 Author)In This Episode* Where are The Eleven Year Olds?* My Last Pill NYE 1995 Holborn Pavillon Australia* Acid House Promoters Wont Get Licenses* Biology Jarvis is Acid's Mr Big* Protecting Your Money* Yardie's Attempt Armed Robbery at Genesis'88* Why Lie About Charity Connections to Events* Biology Jarvis Threatens Police with Riots* Bros Enlist in War on Acid House* Does Drug Use Diminish The Acid House Experience?* Technology Unleashes a New Batch of Music Producers* Cops in Battles with Ravers* Cop Taken Hostage at Rave!* Arresting Promoters Then Releasing Them* Cops Battle with Acid House Yobbo's* Closing Down Britain's Most Famous Clubs* Goldfish Pills Sold as Ecstasy* M25 Acid Parties* Genesis'88 | Biology Free New Years Eve 1989* Sunrise Gets Stopped | Joins Genesis'88 & Biology* Wayne Arrives at Warehouse with Thousands of PeopleWATCH ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/SRbkBSYnFxYSupporting the PodcastWe have only recently launched the video and audio podcast, which means we really need the support of our viewers and listeners. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the dangers that obesity presents to overall health and wellbeing. With obese people more likely to develop serious illness, and require hospitalisation, it's clear that the UK needs a new strategy to help tackle the growing obesity crisis across the country. In response, the government has put together a strategy that they think will help to encourage healthy change, and address the obesity problem. The new measures include advertising regulations, ending buy one get one free deals on unhealthy food, and new labelling guidelines. Does it go far enough? Joining us to discuss these new proposals is Jo Churchill MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Prevention, Public Health and Primary Care. Jo explains what the government is hoping to achieve, what success will look like, and how the industry can help in a fascinating look at this new government policy. About Jo Churchill About Jo Churchill Jo Churchill was brought up in East Anglia and, before moving to Suffolk two years ago, lived and worked in the rural county of Lincolnshire, with her husband and four daughters. Her early career started in retail for both regional and global brands and led her into site development and the building industry. Since 1994, she has run two successful contracting companies. As a mature student, studying part time as she worked, she achieved first class degrees at both BSc and MSc levels. She began to study for a PhD in Small and Medium Sized Enterprise and Social Responsibility at the University of Nottingham. Unfortunately, a second bout of cancer forced her to put her research on hold. Her lifelong interest in politics became more focused five years ago, when she started campaigning for improved cancer outcomes. As a thirty one mother of two, she was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer and she was treated again in her mid 40's for breast cancer. Her personal experience of the services and support available to patients, led to her involvement with Breakthrough, the Breast Cancer charity. In her time as a healthcare campaigner, she spoke in Parliament on cancer outcomes and undertook national awareness campaigns. Her drive to improve everyday lives, led her to being elected as a Lincolnshire County Councillor. In this role she immediately took on an executive function covering and working with a broad range of external bodies, but still with a particular focus for health and business such as the Local Enterprise Partnership and Health and Well-Being Board. As her daughters have grown up, she has been a Vice chair of Governors at one of the East Midlands top Grammar schools and has chaired their finance committee. She has also been a governor at a BESD school rated as outstanding and sat on a Sure Start Board. Throughout her life, she has always juggled working, studying, raising her four daughters and a two time cancer diagnosis. She now brings her broad base of experience to the constituency and her home of Bury St Edmunds. First elected as a Member of Parliament and the first female representative for Bury St Edmunds in 2015, re-elected again in 2017.

Robotics is another of HM Government's 'eight great technologies'. Is it possible that in a few years we might have machines with artificial intelligence? In this lecture I will describe the mathematics of machine learning and explain its applications to robotics. In particular I will show how the modern ideas of deep learning allow a robot to make sense of the world it exists in, including the ideas behind speech and face recognition. I will also address the important (at least to mathematicians!) question of whether a robot will ever replace a mathematician. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/is-a-mathematician-a-robotGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
