On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Sara Simeone, CEO and Co-Founder of Niftyz (formerly Digital Oracles), and Co-Chair of Start-up Working Group, Crypto Valley. Sara is a strategist with a commercial mind, she was one of the first to publish a paper in 2018 on how machine learning and blockchain will have an impact on the future of digital marketing. Sara worked with a portfolio of leading global accelerators, incubators and VC professionals to tackle company maturity and co-develop programmes that both nurture potential and offer innovative capabilities to early stage ventures. During the course of their discussions, both ladies discussed 1) the Metaverse, NFTs and Web 3.0, 3) why Sara launched and developed NFTs and 3) where the market for NFTs is going, and 4) what are the investment challenges and opportunities to deliver for the immersive internet in the right way. KEY TAKEAWAYS I've been at the forefront of new technologies and new things happening on the web since the beginning of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. That's what brought me to where we are today. I researched how machine learning and blockchain will impact the future of data, and in 2017, I got in touch with the Crypto Valley Environment and began to build a network in Italy and the UK. Web 2.0, which is the world we live in now, is dominated by platforms that we use to share content and information online. Sometimes, unbeknownst to us, our information is sold online. It's a business model that Facebook (meta), Twitter, and many other publishers out there use to leverage to generate money. Web 3.0 in a container of new terminology. We're looking at it as a decentralized web where we decide how our information is used and who we share it with, though there are still a lot of limitations from a technical point of view as well as a significant knowledge gap. Metaverse and NFT are very much connected. Niftyz looks at NFTs as the keys that unlock specific content that is stored either on-chain or off-chain, unlocking a lot of information, data, tools, features, badges, and exciting new things on the metaverse. If we don't understand NFTs and how to use these new tools, it will be challenging to get access to the metaverse itself. We've been trained by the web, and society that we have to monetize the outputs that we create. With Web 3.0 I see another angle, what I call ‘the input economy' where I can start monetizing at every single step that goes into creating that output. From this perspective, we can see NFTs as empowering the monetization of this value-creation process. For instance, if my brand creates mock-ups of my fashion items, I could potentially create an NFT version of the mock-up and ask my community to vote by purchasing the one they like the most. This market research can be used in the future to create a physical item that people want. From here, AMAs with the designer, virtual fashion events only for users, etc. BEST MOMENTS ‘Niftyz is basically a platform that wants to enable businesses and brands of all sizes and industries that want to get into this new world of NFTs.'‘Everybody's trying to get into the Metaverse, and brands are building teams with competencies around this, but it's more of a PR/marketing play at the moment, whereas in the future, it will give some returns.'‘NFTs have a bad reputation. In every phase of the internet, cowboys are trying to get rich quickly. Now, NFTs have begun to be adopted by artists because they've found a way to get in touch with a different type of audience.'‘Web 3.0 is creating a new value for our know-how. That's the ethos behind Niftyz, empowering people, businesses, and brands to monetize their know-how in a brand new way.' ABOUT THE GUEST Sara Simeone is CEO and Co-Founder of Niftyz (formerly Digital Oracles) and Co-Chair of Start-up Working Group of the Crypto Valley. She is also a technology industry mentor, strategist, and growth management specialist with particular strengths in the optimization and commercial development of early-stage, rapid-development tech businesses.  Her ability to predict commercial and technical challenges far ahead of critical milestones is proven. As a respected strategist, she works with a portfolio of leading global Accelerators, Incubators, and VC professionals, tracking companies' progress and maturity and co-developing programs that both nurture potential and offer 360-degree support to innovative early-stage ventures.  With an ability to decipher complex business concepts and technologies, she creates data and KPI-based go-to-market strategies that really work. Practical experience includes managing and mentoring senior teams, negotiating multi-million-pound contracts, guiding companies to achieve maximum results without compromising team morale and P&L management.  In 2018, Sara Simeone published her master's thesis on how machine learning and blockchain will impact the future of digital marketing. She was one of the first marketers in the world to publish a piece on the topic. This piece of research gave her access to several professional opportunities: mentoring startups at CV Labs in Crypto Valley (Switzerland); consulting for emerging technology companies in the UK and abroad, and lecturing at Manchester Metropolitan University as an Associate Lecturer of Digital Marketing Strategy. Efi Pylarinou: Why sustainability investing?

Scouting for Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2022 40:25

On this episode of Scouting for Growth, Sabine VdL interviews FinTech and Blockchain Advisor Efi Pylarinou about why sustainable investing is so important, her view on the state of FinTech (and what the insurance industry can learn from it), sustainability in the context of Digital Transformation, what the emerging risks are and more.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Switzerland is one of the biggest hubs in Blockchain for Finance, which comes out of Crypto Valley. It's an example of how an ecosystem works: You need the regulator, the private sector, the capital and an international outreach for the recipe to work, and that's what has happened in the crypto sector but it hasn't happened in FinTech. Having said that, the crypto sector in Switzerland is more in the RegTech sub-vertical, which is related to data analytics and so on. That's the high level at which Switzerland stands. There's something that worries me that's an indicator that we're early with the insurance industry being interested in climate, the carbon footprint and how companies and individuals can reduce their carbon footprint. But we're seeing a lot of businesses and startups offering services to trade credits. We need to get over that. A company can get a high ESG ranking on the climate front, but that might be completely negated because they're doing something on another front in terms of labour practices for example. The ball has started rolling in the public markets, Black Rock is leading and making big announcements. But in the public markets this has to start from the seed, when the company is born: Is the company thinking sustainably and what does it mean? How do you treat your team? Is your mission completely segregated from society and nature? No, it isn't, but we don't think like that yet. Going forward we're going to see more incumbent banks partnering with sustainable FinTechs so they can integrate it in their lending practices, corporate finances and commercial business banking processes, for example.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Innovation gets adopted, but before that happens, there needs to be a shift in the narrative. This is what is currently happening with sustainability. Still, we're early in the journey.' ‘In December 2020 ESG net inflows surpassed £ 1 billion, a record number.' ‘Corporates still operate and make decisions in silos. Think about your borrowing needs, they are still separate from your investing needs. We haven't put the whole picture together. Yet, centralized financing has to be part of the new culture, which is why it needs to start from the startups.' ‘We're seeing a trend where digital banking and finance apps take advantage of the lifestyle appeals, whether they're giving rewards to people or gamifying their offerings due to the fact people care more about the environment.'   ABOUT THE GUEST No.1 independent Global Woman Influencer in Finance & Data, a seasoned Wall Street professional with a Ph.D. in Finance with over 200,000 followers across channels.  Work at the intersections of Business Development, Marketing, and PR for Brands involved in Digital transformation in various industries. Doch was genau steckt hinter Crypto Valley? Ethereum (157.2 Mrd. USD) 2. Cardano (40.6 Mrd. USD) 3. Polkadot (29.3 Mrd. USD) 4. Aave (3.9 Mrd. USD) 5. Cosmos (3.8 Mrd. USD) 6. Solana (3.3 Mrd. USD) 7. Tezos (2.6 Mrd. USD) 8. Dfinity (2 Mrd. USD) 9. Near (1.1 Mrd. USD) 10. Nexo (1.1 Mrd. USD) 11. Diem (1 Mrd.

LTnT - Lifestyle, Travel & Technology

Introduction to "Tech usage in the Philippines "In this episode of the Lifestyle, Travel & Technology podcast, the hosts Alexander and Garry look into the usage of tech related products and services in the Philippines among Filipino's and Filipina's. Alexander being half Filipino, he knows that social media is a big thing among the people in the Philippines. Sure, social media is a big thing for a lot of us, but the Filipino's on average spend around  50 hours a week on their preferred social media platform overtaking most of Europe. Unlike many countries in Europe that are considered to be very conservative when it comes to anything tech related, the Philippines is trying to become a key player within the tech industry. They want to achieve this by implementing a Blockchain-based network for legal documents as well as salary's, which is being tested by the central bank of the Philippines. It is also the very first country, where their central bank are open to this emerging trend and are testing it out and even offering incentives for any company to set up their headquarters in the dedicated economic area called CEZA. Jonathan Keim, communications director of CryptoCurrencyWire (“CCW”), called in with his usual weekly update, which began with a revelation that may startle the IRS. Residents of Switzerland's canton of Zug, aptly named Crypto Valley, now have the option of paying their taxes in Bitcoin (“BTC”) and ether (“ETH”) (https://ccw.fm/1USWE). Zug acquired the crypto label because of its crypto-friendly policies. Despite its size — population of 30,000 — the small town is home to cryptocurrency exchange Shapeshift, as well as the Ethereum Foundation. Opening its arms to the latter has proven to be a game changer. The presence of the Ethereum Foundation has precipitated an entire ecosystem of service providers and developers within the community. With this latest pronouncement, which allows companies and private individuals to pay taxes up to an amount of 100,000 Swiss francs ($109,670), the canton maintains its place as a leader in crypto regulation. In other news, social content publishing platform The Capital claims that Bitcoin is now the sixth-largest world currency (https://ccw.fm/YpEMB). The Capital report states that “at its current market cap, Bitcoin has a money supply worth more than 170 different fiat currencies,” which is a good indication that contrasting the money supply of various world currencies to Bitcoin valuation may be a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Despite being dubbed a currency, Bitcoin seems to lack three essential characteristics — medium of exchange, store of value and unit of account — that money must have. Many businesses and individuals will transact in Bitcoin, but the currency is still not widely enough accepted to be a medium of exchange. Moreover, its price fluctuations make it ill-suited to qualify as a store of value or a unit of exchange. Keim's final headline, CFTC Greenlights LedgerX Request to Move Beyond Digital Currency Products, shows regulators are warming to the idea of digital assets (https://ccw.fm/QgqEK). The CFTC has announced its approval of the LedgerX application to offer fully collateralized futures and options products in addition to the digital asset swaps it already provides. The CFTC order effectively removes the distinction between derivatives on digital assets and those with more established bases, such as commodities, stocks, bonds, interest rates and currencies. Now investors should find it a tad easier to cut risk as they search for returns in the current pandemic-plagued environment. Ahmed jetted off to China for the Shanghai Blockchain Week and in this episode, he is joined by an old friend of his, David Johnston. David is literally an OG in this space getting involved as early as 2012 and has contributed in more ways than one since joining. He is currently the Chairman of Factom and the Managing Director of Yeomans Global Capital. Ahmed reminisces the first time he and David first met, remembering a quote he would never forget; ‘Everything that can be decentralized will be decentralized’. This was jokingly described as Johnston’s law when David first introduced this at the Coin Summit in 2014. Great, things will be decentralised but when and to what extent? David does a good job showcasing how and when certain processes and use cases should be decentralised. The two dig deeper to explore what use cases we are seeing today that is both decentralised and has some credible adoption behind it. Other than Bitcoin, of course, David goes onto explain how Factom, a decentralised blockchain that anchors into bitcoin and ethereum, has secured hundreds of millions of business records and cites a couple of uses by real companies using Factom as a way to record business documents. This is where the amazing TikTok Baidu case was revealed by David. You definitely don’t want to miss this interesting court case story, oh and the supreme court of China was involved too. David goes into what Factom is and why it exists claiming that it solves as many problems as bitcoin does as its core focus is on record keeping which allows for strong transparency and accountability. Ahmed shifts the conversation to see David’s opinion on which jurisdiction is the best for blockchain and crypto. In his words - ‘Switzerland. Hands down’. Ahmed, a bit shell shocked dove in to understand why David thinks Switzerland is the hotspot for blockchain and David urges blockchain projects should consider moving to Zug, which is dubbed as Crypto Valley. David further shocks Ahmed when Ahmed asks him Bitcoin or Ethereum. David chooses Ethereum for a number of reasons - Do make sure to listen to hear why! Before the end of the show, the pair go off on a completely random topic - Homeschooling. As David mentioned he was homeschooled, Ahmed was intrigued to find out what is homeschooling about, hows it different from public schooling and why parents make the decision to homeschool their children. All of the above and more will be on this week’s episode of Encrypted! If you liked what you heard, please do leave us a review on iTunes and the other platforms. The year-long crypto winter has continued to take a toll on crypto investors’ sentiments and confidence. Take Switzerland for example, in Q4 2018 alone, the market valuation of 50 largest blockchain companies in the country’s “Crypto Valley” plunged more than 50% to US$20 billion. Over the same period, however, the number of Blockchain companies surged by 20%, according to a survey conducted by CC VC. Despite the bear market, the demand for the distributed ledger technology continues to flourish. Amongst the 20% increase in blockchain companies, four of them are classified as ‘unicorns’ — signifying they are already worth billions of dollars. Liechtenstein, an early supporter of the technology implemented legislation to regulate blockchain business models, showing a direction towards adoption. With that said, how are other blockchain firms fairing on a global scale? I invited David Wachsman, CEO of Wachsman on to my daily tech podcast.  Wachsman is a high-tech communications agency with specialization in blockchain, AI, IoT, gaming, cybersecurity, and fintech. They counsel and support the most fascinating companies and boldest ideas around the world. David Wachsman is a world-renowned blockchain expert and thought leader. He is a regular speaker at the most highly recognized technology conferences around the world. Recently, David was featured on CNN International, CNN Money, and in New York Magazine. In late-2015, David founded Wachsman to provide professional public relations services to the rapidly growing financial technology industry with cryptocurrency and blockchain at its foundation. Wachsman has since become a global organization with more than 100 employees based in offices in New York City and Dublin. David and his team have represented and acted as communications advisors to many of the most indispensible organizations in blockchain, including Dash, Crypto Valley Association, Bitcoin Suisse AG, CoinDesk, IOHK, Lisk, Steemit, tZERO, Jaxx, and Coinsource. Before founding Wachsman, David led the day-to-day operations for a boutique public relations agency in Manhattan and held roles in advertising, political affairs, and biotechnology. David also elaborates on the relationship between crypto market cap and the growth of blockchain technology and what he thinks the blockchain industry should be focusing on in 2019 to encourage mass adoption.

Bitcoin, Blockchain, and the Technologies of Our Future

There might be something special about Switzerland that attracts so many blockchain startups to the country. During 2017, Swiss-based ICOs raised about $550 million in funding, which was about 14 percent of the global ICO market. Zug Switzerland is known as "Crypto Valley" and home to over 50 blockchain startups despite its small population of less than 30000 people. Davos Switzerland is renowned for hosting the World Economic Forum each year, and this year for the first time there was a really strong crypto presence there thanks to the team from DecentraNet. I visited Davos and Poschiavo, and chatted to some of the people working in blockchain about why Switzerland might be good for the blockchain industry. Luka Müller and Dianne Schepers of MME — the Swiss law firm famous for running the Ethereum crowdsale — discuss jurisdictional constraints, Crypto Valley, novel crypto-asset classes and the “second wave” of tokenization. With 25 previous “token generating events” and 60 pending projects, MME is a clear leader in the crypto law realm. The firm is now welcoming a “second wave” of clients; companies from the legacy economy which are seeking ways to enter the blockchain world through tokenizing their pre-existing equity. In this discussion Luka outlines some of the major distinctions between US and Swiss law in relation to token issuance, looking at securities law, donations, and the commonly used foundation model. These and other regulatory differences, compounded by the stable and already-decentralized nature of Swiss government, make Switzerland the ideal jurisdiction for Crypto Valley, the rapidly growing successor to Silicon Valley based in Zug, a financial center. Alongside its long list of clients, MME is now focussed on creating Blockchain Crypto Property (BCP) standards. The final BCP paper, to be published in August, will classify tokens under a range of asset classes and outline a quality checklist for various token models. These standards will simplify risk assessment and ensure that tokens issued in Switzerland will be globally listable and tradeable. mme.ch twitter.com/MME_Switzerland consensys.net consensysmedia.net etherreview.info https://itunes.apple.com//podcast/the-ether-review/id899090462?mt=2

Zug, Switzerland July 24, 2015 I'm sitting here on a park bench with my friend and colleague Johann Gevers overlooking an absolutely serene lake in Zug, Switzerland. With the elegant and imposing mountains behind, it's as quintessentially Swiss as you can get. Johann is the founder of Monetas, an advanced digital transaction platform that could dramatically change the way people do business around the world Monetas is a ‘cryptofinance' company-- part of the new generation of technology firms that has set its sights on revolutionizing finance. This goes way beyond Bitcoin. The world of finance as we know it is highly centralized. Anytime you buy a Starbucks coffee or pay your electric bill, the funds pass through a heavily congested financial highway that is exclusively controlled by the banks. All the money is funneled through their system. It's expensive. Inefficient. And incredibly outdated. Think about an international wire transfer—the funds flow from one bank, to a larger bank, to an even larger bank (typically in New York), and back down to smaller banks on the receiving end. And everyone takes a fee along the way. This is ridiculous in 2015. The technology already exists to eliminate all of the middle men and allow transactions to pass directly between a buyer and seller. These companies are game changers. And in Johann's case, he deliberately selected this picturesque valley in Switzerland as the place to base his company. In Johann's assessment, Switzerland still presents the most stable, credible, freest place in the world to run a business, especially something that could really disrupt finance. And he's working hard to bring even more cryptofinance companies here to Zug—a vision he calls “Crypto Valley”. If you listen to his story, it really makes sense. Economic freedom. Low taxes. Friendly, cooperative government. And the lifestyle really is incredibly idyllic. I invite you to join Johann and I today as we discuss some of the unique and inviting features of Switzerland... and the future of finance.

It called out Telegram for doing “a two-step around the registration provisions” and performing “sleight of hand” by fabricating the difference between a purchaser’s investment in Grams and their delivery of the Grams, which would allow them to withhold info normally in regulatory statements. Pavel Durov’s creation, the document contends, gave a “strawman” argument about “existence” since “Grams will never be tangible.” The SEC put the frosting on when it wrote:“Telegram’s attempt to avoid this economic truth by labelling Grams ‘commodities’ also fails. Grams are not commodities. Unlike gold, comic books, and Krispy Kreme donuts — commodities Telegram compares to Grams — Grams have no intrinsic value.”Art project uses Ethereum to validate their art piecesAs Thomas Crown Art’s tech expert and business analyst Ian Mcleod, explained, each piece of artwork is embedded with blockchain technology. “All our works of art are logged on the Ethereum’s blockchain with a unique ‘smART’ contract,” he said. “This means that all the artwork is authenticated, and all providence issues are solved. This is a major step forward in the art world where forgery is a growing and expensive problem.”Justin FREAKING Sun.
