This episode with Dana R fisher is the unofficial part 2 of 3 looking at the sociological side of collective action, while we try to slow the sinking of the Titanic, to make homes on the lifeboats. The rub in all this is that Dana's message is not dissimilar from Roger Hallam's (unofficial part 1). She agrees that millions will likely die before the so-called Anthroshift kicks in and we get the cascade of structural policies we need to respond en masse to the crisis. The detail in all we discuss is in Dana's new book, ‘Saving Ourselves - From Climate Shocks To Climate Action'. If you want a close up lens on the structural failures to date, coupled with the determination of those in power to ignore the loud and clear science, then please do consider buying my book COPOUT. I've had great feedback from climate luminaries such as Sir David King, Bill McKibben, Alice Hill, Rupert Read, and others. Thank you to all subscribers for your support. On this episode, Nate is joined by climate scientist and policy ambassador Sir David King to unpack the current situation regarding Earth's climate system and human response (or lack thereof) to the accelerating heating of the atmosphere. While there are many uncertainties this field still grapples with, the fundamentals of the rising average global temperature as a response to increasing man-made greenhouse emissions are widely recognized by the global scientific community. Yet - especially in the United States - climate change remains a contentious issue, making it an even tougher political topic with no easy solutions. What is the basic science behind our understanding of the atmosphere?  Will we resort to geoengineering to avert the worst climate outcomes - and which plans look the most promising? What are the implications of global heating for the coming decades and beyond? About Sir. David King Sir David King is an Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. He is the Chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, Founder of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge, and an Affiliate Partner of SYSTEMIQ Limited. For World Ocean Day, Gaia Vince finds out how the planet's seas could help us to generate clean power, capture CO2 and feed the world. Gaia is joined in the studio by science journalist and marine biologist Olive Heffernan. She dives into the controversy regarding the potential of mining in deep oceans and discusses whether the seas could become the location for Industrial Revolution 2.0. We're used to seeing seaweed wrapped around our sushi rolls but it's so much more than that. As well as being a tasty addition to what we eat, seaweed plays a vital role in absorbing CO2. Gaia speaks to Vincent Doumeizel, a senior adviser on oceans to the UN Global Compact; he's also the food programme director at the UK-based charity Lloyd's Register Foundation. He's confident that seaweed could enable us to sustainably feed a growing global population in the coming decades. Phytoplankton – microscopic species of algae that exist on the surface of the sea – also absorb huge amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. Sir David King, founder and chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group and former chief scientific adviser to the UK Government has the radical idea that artificial whale poo could boost phytoplankton growth, leading to an increase in fish stocks and, consequently, improved biodiversity in the oceans. He tells Gaia about his project and the potential it has for carbon capture. When we think of energy generation from the oceans, we tend to think of offshore technology such as wind turbines. But what about generating electricity using the water itself? Gaia speaks to Eco Wave Power's Inna Braverman who reveals how her project harnesses the power of the waves by attaching to existing coastal structures such as piers and jetties, to provide a source of clean, renewable energy. In this episode, recorded in Glasgow, I speak to Dr Paul Behrens from Leiden University about how, regardless of what choices we make, humanity is now committed to passing through the eye of the metaphorical needle. What we can expect on the other side may well be in our gift to decide but with each strike of the clock, the forecasts for humanity get bleaker. In his new book, ‘The Best of Times, The Worst of Times', Paul presents realistic outcomes based on the best case and worst-case scenarios. As he says, the worst case does not necessarily mean a 4ºC world. Tragedy can come long before this and in many parts of the world, it already has. To illustrate this point further, I have put an excerpt of Sir David King speaking about why we must take climate repair seriously, at the end of this podcast. I am planning to catch up again with Paul in the near future to record a population special, based on his research that is also profiled in the book. These are important perspectives worth grasping in an ever more complex and treacherous world. Thanks for listening to this COP notes mini-series. Even with the best efforts, it will be decades before we see any change in global temperatures through our mitigation efforts. Given the pace of global heating and the time lag before our emissions reductions have any impact, scientists are exploring additional ways of reducing global temperature. Gaia Vince explores ways of actively removing carbon from the atmosphere. She discusses the idea of BECCS, biological energy with carbon capture storage, and DAC, direct air capture with Simon Evans of Climate Brief. Sir David King, Chair of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge University, explains how he is planning an experiment in the Arabian Sea that will allow the oceans to take up more carbon. Professor Rachael James of the University of Southampton talks about her experiments in enhanced rock weathering, where she finds ways of speeding up the slow continual process in which carbon dioxide in the atmosphere dissolves in rainwater, forming a weak acid that reacts with the surface of rocks. She hopes this will lock up more carbon and bring benefits to farmers and mining companies. And psychologist Ben Converse of the University of Virginia considers whether we might find geoengineering a socially acceptable approach to tackling climate change. In this episode of Shaping The Future, I am speaking with former UK Government Chief Science Advisor, Sir David King. Sir David has recently set up the Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG) to respond with agility to the real-time climate crisis. The first report is linked in the notes and focuses on the Arctic as a key regulator of global climate stability and more recently, chaotic disruption. Please consider supporting this work at: https://patreon.com/genncc and subscribing at https://genn.cc Key points: Jet Stream Omega Event Johanne Rockstrum: Arctic tipping point has passed. Are accelerating impacts at risk of outpacing action? Scientists have mismanaged the modelling of climate change events. Greenland ice sheet is sitting in warm air and losing ice rapidly. We are not prepared for what we are currently seeing! We need a UN Security Council For Climate Change. Our future as a civilisation depends on a rapid response to the situation. UK Policy on China: Timing-wise it could not be worse! The EU, China and US are all talking together. Greenhouse Gas Removal: Build up oceans to what they used to be and we could absorb 30-40 billion tonnes per annum. Refreezing the Arctic: If we don't manage this we are cooked! The CCAG Report is for Governments, Businesses and Financial operations. The time for action is now! Sir David discusses the mantra they are trying to get into the mainstream consciousness of climate action: Reduce, Remove and Repair. The message is clear that climate is now the main issue threatening our civilisation across the globe. We are now crossing tipping points and the time rapid scaled up action is now. Sir David also suggests the creation of a UN Security Council for Climate Change to deal specifically with the international efforts of nations and regions to tackle arising issues. This connects to my interview next week with NATO and US Government Security Advisor on Climate Change, Chad Briggs. Next week I will also be talking to Dr Shaun Fitzgerald OBE, Director of the Centre for Climate Repair in Cambridge about how we need to flip our building infrastructure from a massive carbon source to carbon sink. This includes existing buildings and the colossal amount that needs to be built with resilience around the world to weather the tide of climate adversity. As the discussion progresses and we deep dive into the complexities and facts around this important subject, Sir David explains more about the Conference of the Parties meeting, explaining that the 26th session is due to take place in November of this year and world leaders will come together with one focus – to discuss climate change. As he highlights scary statistics, it's clear just how important these meetings and subsequent actions are, and the speed at which they're executed. This episode will open your eyes more than ever before, to the crisis that confronts us regarding climate change, and the importance of the part we play. Speaking candidly, openly and informatively, Sir David shares incredibly thought-provoking findings and experiences with us, in a message we all need to hear.

Carbon capture technology is a keystone investment in restoring the climate to pre-industrial CO2 levels. Earth911 talks with Rick Parnell, CEO of the Foundation for Climate Restoration about his recent Newsweek and Washington Post op-eds calling for investments in the technology and setting a price for carbon. He and his co-authors, Kathleen Rogers of EarthDay.org and Sir David King of the Center for Climate Repair at Cambridge University, point out that climate change-related health issues will lead to more than 250,000 additional deaths per year between 2030 and 2050 and an that additional climate-caused food shortages will contribute to 529,000 deaths a year by 2050. While he does not see carbon capture as a silver bullet -- it must be combined with reforestation, changes in farming and human diets, and radical reductions in CO2 emissions -- he and his organization believe the technology can help remove more than 150 years' worth of excess carbon from the atmosphere.Parnell and Earth911's Mitch Ratcliffe discuss where carbon can be stored using marine permaculture and in industrial applications such as concrete made from calcium carbonate mined from the sky, as well as his advice for the Biden Administration as it pursues an aggressive climate policy agenda. Learn about getting involved yourself, the Foundation for Climate Restoration has local chapters and youth education programs growing across the country.

Solving the climate crisis is challenging because it requires both dramatic behavioral change and a great deal of capital. And yet, when faced with a global health crisis, governments were willing to enact multitrillion-dollar aid packages and people radically shifted their behavior in a matter of weeks. So, what if we mobilized against climate change similarly to the way we responded to the coronavirus? Sir David King is the former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of the United Kingdom and Rick Parnell is the CEO of the Foundation for Climate Restoration. Together, they coauthored The Washington Post piece, ‘Stopping Climate Change Could Cost Less Than Fighting COVID-19.’ On this episode of the podcast, Sir David and Rick join Ross to discuss the opportunity governments have to invest in climate repair as we rebuild our economies in the aftermath of the global pandemic. Sir David and Rick compare the economic impact of reversing climate change with that of COVID, describing the catastrophic consequences of rising sea levels and explaining what Europe, China, and the US are doing to both reduce emissions and scale direct air capture technologies. The poll, which was conducted in early March, shows that unemployment continues to rank among Spain’s top three problems for a significant majority of respondents, 72.3%. Of these, 46.7% said it was the country’s biggest problem, while 19.8% said it was the second worst problem and 5.7% said it was the third. Carme Chacón, a leading figure in the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and Spain’s first-ever female defense minister, was found dead on Sunday evening in her apartment in Madrid. She was 46. Spanish social services have taken the twins born to a 64-year-old woman in February into care, citing “indications of vulnerability” and concluding that the pair are “in a deprived situation.” Mauricia Ibáñez, from the northern region of Burgos, has already seen her first child, which she had at the age of 58, taken from her by the regional government of Castilla y León in 2014. Not everybody knows Manolo Prieto but few are unfamiliar with his most famous design: the Osborne bull, whose silhouette can be seen standing proudly against the skyline of many of Spain’s major highways. The main political stories in the UK probably follow Teresa May's support for President Trumps attack on the Syrian airbase An illegal immigrant, who was jailed for attempted rape, has been given £27,000 in compensation for being in prison too long. Bashdar Abdulla Qarani, 36, arrived in Britain illegally in 2005, and became a repeat offender, including battery, theft and carrying a knife. He was allowed to stay in the country and was jailed for four years in 2012 for attempted rape in South Wales. What a parable for our times the great diesel scandal has been, as councils vie to see which can devise the heaviest taxes on nearly half the cars in Britain because they are powered by nasty, polluting diesel. This week, it was announced many diesel drivers will soon have to pay fully £24 a day to drive into Central London, while 35 towns across the country are thinking of following suit. Already some councils charge up to £90 more for a permit to park a diesel car. The roots of this debacle go back to the heyday of Tony Blair’s government, when his chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, became obsessed with the need to fight global warming. Although he was an expert in ‘surface chemistry’ — roughly speaking, the study of what happens when, for example, a liquid meets a gas — King had no qualifications in climate science. Parents, heads and politicians called on ministers to ‘cap’ the price of summer getaways, which can rise by more than £1,000 at the end of term. Firms were accused of ‘holding law-abiding parents to ransom’ after a father yesterday lost his fight against a £60 fine for an unauthorised term-time trip. The ruling means families will face a fine or prosecution if pupils take even half a day off without permission. Parents now have little choice but to book within school holidays, leaving them at the mercy of travel firms charging sky-high prices. Lib Dem education spokesman John Pugh said ‘greedy’ firms must ‘stop exploiting hardworking parents’.

This podcast with Sir David King marks the Journal’s first foray into climate change and global governance issues, actors and arrangements. Sir David has been centrally involved in the creation of two potentially very important entities in the efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and move to low carbon emission strategies for states. Sir David, appointed by the Foreign Secretary as the new permanent Special Representative for Climate Change, along with a number of other notables including Sir David Attenborough, Lord Stern, Lord O’Donnell and Lord Layard launched the Global Apollo Programme in June 2015 designed to advance research on renewables and in particular new storage technologies. Through a series contacts, and some good fortune, two entities were launched just prior to the formal COP21 – Mission Innovation (MI) an alliance of states (currently 21) to advance the pace of innovation in clean energy and the Breakthrough Energy Coalition (BEC), a coalition of some 20 venture capitalists brought together by Bill Gates to accelerate commercialization and investment in cost-effective clean energy innovations. It is a compelling story from one of the principals involved in climate change governance. Please enjoy.

Cricket, (no the game, not the insect), could be at threat from climate change according to the MCC and the Climate Coalition. The government's White Paper on Brexit is published and Martin Baxter comments on the implications for the environment. News from Scotland about a lamp post which generates its own electricity and statistics from the SMMT about diesel cars. I also ask why marine anthropogenic litter is an issue for us all, whether Greenpeace has overstepped itself this time, I introduce another candidate for the Department of Missed Opportunities, and Sir David King warns that time is no longer on our side.
