"If man is to survive, he will have learned to take delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life's exciting variety, not something to fear." "A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head-on and licks it, or turns his back on it and starts to wither away." "Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate but take a special delight in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our kind here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity almost certainly out there." ― Gene Roddenberry My guest this week on Frankly Speaking with Tyra G' is Christopher Derrick, one of the writers on Picard, The Eighth Main series set in the Star Trek universe, and a current writer on The Equalizer television series. BENNETT YELLIN Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bennett received his B.A. in fiction from U.C.L.A.  Still not ready to enter the real world, he enrolled at UMass in Amherst for an M.F.A. in fiction. It was there — on the first day of school — that he met and befriended Peter Farrelly. On a lark, they tried writing a comedy together and this spec script ultimately got into the hands of Eddie Murphy and the Zucker Brothers, creators of Airplane and The Naked Gun. Both Murphy and the Zuckers asked the duo to write movies for them, and their career was off and running. Yellin wrote exclusively with Peter for years until they asked his brother Bobby to join them. The three went on to write a number of unproduced features together until they created Dumb and Dumber in 1994 and reunited in 2014 to co-write the official sequel chronicling the further idiotic adventures of Harry and Lloyd, Dumb and Dumber To. In 2007, the Farrelly Brothers branched out on their own and Yellin partnered with James Robert Johnson to create a professional writing duo that has endured for sixteen years. Among the plethora of projects they've tackled during their career — some produced, others not — the two have co-written Let's Scare Jessica to Death for Paramount Pictures, the Fox situation comedy Unhitched, the direct-to-DVD thriller Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, Paramount Pictures' Hotel For Dogs 2, the Anchor Bay action-thriller In the Blood with Gina Carano, the 20th Century Fox family film, Santa's Little Helper, and the Warner Brothers re-boot of the Police Academy series, Police Academy: Takin' it to the Streets. More recently, Yellin and Johnston have co-written a live action family stage show adaptation of the hugely popular Angry Birds IP, and the two are currently at work creating an original pilot for a new animated show.Bennett's Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/bennett.yellinPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Daniel John Carey is a writer in Los Angeles who runs a popular screenwriting workshop. He is also is the author of the new book "Dream Another Dream: Recover and Reimagine Your Life," which deals with creating the life right for you, no matter what your previous life experiences. "Dream Another Dream" contains philosophical and life advice quotations from hundreds of people throughout history. Daniel has mixed the quotations with his own writing about life in general. It contains parts of his own story growing up in a tremendously dysfunctional household of many misfortunes. It has been called "a philosophical autobiography filled with reflection and inspiration." Finding himself completely unprepared for life, as a young adult he experienced homelessness and was on what seemed to be a path of ruin. Realizing it was up to him to create a life he wanted, he got busy. Putting himself through years of college, he eventually started a free monthly parenting magazine in Los Angeles. After selling it, he returned to college, interned at a public radio station writing the morning news, and eventually worked for alternative newsweeklies. He also became involved with ghost writing books by a variety of authors, which were largely focused on health, plant-based nutrition, psychology, medicine, the insurance industry, and environmentalism. Eventually turning to the film and TV industry, with an interest in screenwriting, he worked as an actor and as a photo double for various movie stars while starting a writers' workshop called Screenwriting Tribe, which has over 1,000 members. He also wrote a screenwriting book used in film schools. His "Dream Another Dream" book was published in 2022, and the followup book will be published this winter. Both books focus on recovering from unfortunate life choices and experiences, and using your intellect, skills, talents, yearning, energy, and focus to work yourself into a life that is right for you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/new-mind-creator/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/new-mind-creator/support
