How does your mindset change when life throws you a massive curveball? Two weeks ago, I introduced Gregg Garfield on this podcast. He is known as patient zero, the gentleman who almost passed away from COVID-19. It was an incredible story of just inspiration, believing, and truly understanding that we can survive anything in this world. So today, I have on his fiancée, Anneliese "AJ" Johnson; she is a brilliant, beautiful woman, the partner of Gregg Garfield, and the woman who stood by his side throughout all of his recovery. I decided to bring her on because it's just as important to hear a partner's story as the actual person going through the experience. I would love you to grab your journal and listen to her words; it is so inspiring. It's time to really curl up and ground yourself outside during this conversation. So, tune in as AJ dives deep into the story behind Gregg's recovery and what she learned about herself while facing adversity. Plus, AJ chats about the importance of mindset on a life-changing and challenging journey. In This Episode: All about Anneliese “AJ” Johnson [ 5:10 ] How AJ heard the news of Gregg’s diagnosis [ 9:45 ] Why animals are the most incredible source of love [ 22:30 ] The importance of living to learn more about yourself [ 26:20 ] What AJ had to understand when Gregg was in the hospital [ 29:30 ] Through adversity, it’s up to you how it will change your life [ 43:40 ] The importance of a strong foundation for a healthy relationship [ 50:40 ] AJ gives her advice for handling these challenging times [ 55:10 ] Quotes: “Animals are the most incredible source of love outside of our own children and our parents.” “I thrive, and I live to grow.” “I thrive, and I live to learn more about myself.” “Look at the universe and say: show me what you can do.” “We're not perfect; this is not an easy road that we're on.” “We definitely find the time to be totally annoying to each other.” Links Mentioned: Download 5 Free Meditations Walk Through This Join My Retreats Sara’s Facebook Live Boldly Follow AJ on Instagram
Today's guest on the show is relationship expert AJ Harbinger and co-host of the highly popular podcast, The Art of Charm which has over 200 million downloads and has featured guests such as myself, Tim Ferriss, Jay Shetty, and Kobe Bryant, and many others. AJ has helped thousands of men and women from all around the world to overcome social anxiety, master conversation, develop social capital and build genuine relationships of the highest quality, as well as breakthrough large personal and professional mental blocks. Like many, success did not come easy for AJ. Identifying as an introvert and Growing up without a Mother, this all quickly ignited some insecurities, pain, and anxiety, and struggled socially in school. As you can imagine, he felt a bit lost as a young adult and took a sabbatical after his undergrad for some self-discovery. Encouraged by his father to get a job to stay motivated, he decided to take a job at a research lab and after having a research project go sideways unexpectedly, he was forced to make a decision. He could either continue down this path of consistent disappointment or take a chance on himself to do something that would help him and others find fulfillment long term. On a mission to develop and cultivate true social skills and confidence, he co-founded the Art of Charm almost 15 years ago. This of course didn't come without challenges as his Father passed away shortly after, whom he was incredibly close to and his Father also doubted his ability to make it in the podcast world. He shares his incredible story of overcoming all of these hardships that came along before and after starting the podcast and of course chat about social skills. Let's face it...developing confidence, emotional intelligence, and relationships are tough and take hard work. But, it can be done and there is an art in doing this. Today, you are going to learn tactical skills that you can apply right now to ensure that you are doing everything you can to improve your self-worth, build deep connections, and of course charm. Topics discussed: AJ's upbringing growing up with a single parent How AJ's childhood affected his mental health How AJ pivoted that adversity into something positive to help so many people AJ's insight about being authentic, being real, and being yourself AJ's advice for somebody who's thinking about doing something for the wrong reason Struggles AJ faced without having his mom around The types of things AJ started doing to cultivate confidence within himself when he started the show, The Art of Charm What are the things that AJ does every single day that are non-negotiable for him to get himself feeling good What AJ and his co-host do when the ratings of their program is not as high as they expected What are a couple of non-negotiable things that people can do to be able to cultivate a deep, meaningful, in-person relationship with someone in 2000, as we're entering 2021? AJ's advice for people when approaching someone at an event, at a seminar, or asking a guy or a girl out What are some things people should say or not say, to get the other person to be more engaged with them The top lessons AJ learned from someone: Who was it and what was the lesson? Takeaways: “Look at any venture that you start and ask yourself, “How am I going to feel about this 10 days from now? How am I gonna feel about this 10 months from now? How am I gonna feel about this 10 years from now?” And if the answer is yes, excited, pumped. 10 months or 10 years later, then you've hit a goldmine. You've hit something that you're gonna have the passion, the motivation, and the drive to fulfill.” - AJ Harbinger “We really made it a focal point to celebrate all the small victories along the way.” - AJ Harbinger Your confidence is like a skyscraper. Start out with a positive view of the day, and end your day with gratitude. The difference between success and lack of success is between your ears. You are constantly training your mind to focus on things whether you like them or not. “If you're feeling like, ‘Wow. You know, I've had so many setbacks.' I would challenge you to pick up the phone and reach out to the people in your life that you care about.” - AJ Harbinger Appreciation is actually telling people what you love about them, why you love having them in your life, why you really enjoy that relationship that person has brought to your life. And acceptance is actually inviting them to participate in your life. The key ingredient in this formula is curiosity -- genuine curiosity. The simplest way is to approach with gratitude and appreciation, and share with them. “Who you surround yourself with, and the intentionality of your habits, your lifestyle, is what unlocks these extraordinary levels of success that we look up to.” - AJ Harbinger Connect with AJ Harbinger: Website: https://theartofcharm.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theartofcharm/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/theartofcharm YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS2wqxYdqjnHkkfc90g169g Connect with Doug Instagram: www.instagram.com/dougbopst Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dougbopst Website: www.dougbopst.com/ Private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/690686891674188

Hey Everyone! Welcome to the last installment of our "Outtakes" episodes! This one with a plethora of pet outtakes and assorted leftovers. There are a LOT of pet outtakes, so we thought we would introduce you to our pets: You will learn more than you ever wanted to know about our pets in this episode, like how Jen's mom likes to buy Finn ice cream cones at McDonalds. Also, what you should order for your pet if you are ever in California and at an In-N-Out Drive Thru. Also, In-N-Out has good iced tea. You also hear a lot from AJ's daughter in this episode. We also talk about: How AJ and Tara cannot really pick out the nuances in wine. Except AJ did go wine tasting one time and had a wine that tasted like pulled pork. Tara's cat is named Baxter, but he wasn't named after Baxter. None of us have ever or will ever name a pet after Eve or Roarke. Although, AJ just got a new car and is ordering an "In Death" themed license plate. The story of best custom license plate that AJ has ever seen. Our first discussion of Fan Profile Questions, and a debate of whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich. A discussion of Monopoly pieces, and float the idea of "Roarkeopoly." You heard it here first. We talk about parenting and porn, and how kids with older siblings sometimes get exposed to more adult themed things than kids without older siblings? AJ tells the story of working at a music/video store and renting porn trilogies. How Covid and Lockdowns were hard for everyone including "creatives," and the creative ways that creative people coped with that. Then AJ makes her daughter come in and sing a song from Frozen. Lastly, we all say good night to Tara's roommate, Steve. Also: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JEN!!

Exercise Science 101 is all about understanding the Stress Adaptation Curve and how human biology is innately connected to the rise of a challenge and adaptations from exercise. The Stress Adaptation Curve promotes the understanding that creating change and progress in your life isn’t a linear process. Our hope with exercise is that our body creates “functional adaptations” like improved health, more muscle, less fat, and increased performance. However this isn’t possible without proper recovery. The point at which the body responds poorly to exercise or any stress is during the recovery period – or lack thereof. So if you want to guarantee results your best bet is to spend time with the science of recovery. This episode is full of Exercise Science from the cellular level of protein synthesis to the cheapest most effective ways to elicit the body to perform it’s amazing self-healing abilities. AJ is mysterious. He's a maker who goes by his initials only and is the creator of Carrd, an awesome tool for creating one-page websites without any code. AJ lives in Nashville and built Carrd entirely himself. He's a bootstrapped, solo entrepreneur and maker who's been able to make a great living building a product people love and pay for. Luckily, he agreed to be recorded without voice masking, as Startup L Jackson requested, when Park— er, Startup L Jackson came on in the first incarnation of Product Hunt Radio. In this episode Ryan and AJ talk about... How AJ started Carrd as a side project which morphed into a full-blown business... “It started out as trying to make my life easier but ended up making users’ lives easier as well. A one-page site builder sounds innocuous, but you’d be surprised at the directions something like this can go.” He explains how he started Carrd and why he decided not to take on the large, multi-page site builders of the world. ... and how Carrd's users transformed it into something new entirely as an outlet for their creativity. “Trends in web design means everything moves together and kind of starts to all look the same. It’s nice to see people using Card to build websites that look unlike anything you’ve ever seen.” Among many other applications of the platform that AJ says he couldn't have foreseen, there has also been an unexpected takeover of Carrd by K-Pop fans who use it to create customized fan sites that look very... unique. AJ explains how he thinks about the direction of the platform and how he handles feature requests... “I try to take most new feature requests and figure out whether this is something that really only service one niche, and if so, is it a big enough niche to justify implementing that feature? But I prefer to implement things that would work for multiple groups of people. I try to look at them and think, ‘how can I distill this down to something that’s a bit more general-purpose that others can get use out of?’” ... and how inspiring it is to see the next generation of makers creating their own projects based on the platform. “It tells you that you can do this, you don’t have to just consume, you can create, you can get out there just like everyone else and make something. It doesn’t have to just be a one-way thing. I’m glad that Card is included in this even though I didn’t intend it to be included in the sphere of no-code tools. That’s probably the coolest part of this entire thing to me.” Some of the sites that users have created are in Ryan's words, “so internet in the best way” and are a great way for people to get into creating things on the web, which is reminiscent of the way that people creating amazing apps today got their start hacking their MySpace pages. They also discuss what it's like to work at a single-person startup... “The day-to-day is fundamentally just me in front of a computer, just hacking away at this thing. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get lonely. Remote work has only been a thing people have done recently. I don’t think we’ve fully realized the implications of what it means to spend your day working alone away from human interaction.” AJ recently brought in someone to help with content moderation, but otherwise he's created, built, and scaled Carrd himself. He opens up about some of the “mistakes” he's made along the way and what he would do differently next time. He also talks about the tools he uses to build the platform. ... and why the discussion around whether a company should take venture capital or not is flawed. He talks about whether he would want to take on venture capital and points out that people get caught up in a false dichotomy. He says that we need a more nuanced discussion of what the right type of funding is for a company that takes into account the company's age and stage. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Big thanks to Pilot for their support.
“I want to see the world. I want to experience life because I almost lost mine.” What if something happened and you could no longer work? How would you and your family survive? AJ Osborne found himself in that precarious position 18 months ago, but because he had sustainable passive income from real estate investing, he was able to focus on healing and continue to support his family as he recovered. Real estate saved his financial life. AJ had been leading a busy life, running his state’s largest brokerage firm as well as a real estate company when he fell ill with a disease called Guillain-Barré. It left AJ completely paralyzed and comatose, and he spent several months on life support. Since then, he has had to relearn how to walk, use his arms and communicate. Fortunately, his 1M ft2 self-storage portfolio allowed AJ to focus on healing while his passive income continued to grow. The experience inspired him to create Cash Flow 2 Freedom, a platform where AJ teaches others how to generate cashflow and achieve financial freedom. Today, AJ joins me to share the story of his battle with Guillon-Barré, explaining how the experience changed his priorities and how the passive income from his real estate portfolio sustained his family through the ordeal. For a lot of former athletes, entrepreneurship is a natural – but extremely risky alternative. The likelihood of success in business is similar to the odds of making it to the professional level of a sport. While that would deter most, today’s guest has turned a quirky idea into a thriving online business. A.J. Wnukowski the founder and CEO of Lumberlend Co., “The Home of the Original Bat Mug.” You may have seen his bat-derived product in the hands of professional baseball players or social media influencers. Athletes and entrepreneurs alike will appreciate today’s episode and A.J.’s hustle. Listen in on A.J.’s journey from injured athlete to business owner of one of the fast growing companies in the sports industry. A couple of things to listen for in this episode: How a mug prototype sparked the fire that became Lumberlend.co (and how AJ got the company off the ground) The most difficult part of making a physical product How Lumberlend went from 16 mugs sold in the first month, to selling 3,000 units a month Hiring friends and family. Linkedin Ads Are The Magic That All Business Needs, So Why Do Very Few Business Owners Know Anything About Them. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who has built a business around a need that so many of my colleagues need. How to create laser targeted lead generation straight to the heart of the business folk across the world using LinkedIn. After our guest began advertising on LinkedIn in 2011, he quickly discovered its powerful potential for business to business (B2B) advertisers. He was so passionate about the results he was seeing, he left his job to start B2Linked in 2014. As he says " As online marketer since 2007, I've managed hundreds of Google AdWords campaigns. I've always been fascinated by the lead quality from intent-based targeting. I love the concept of being present when customers are at the bottom of the funnel, and who are ready to make a purchase. Fast forward to 2011, I was introduced to advertising on LinkedIn. Frankly, I figured that it likely wasn't a good platform because I hadn't heard of it before then. As I continued diving deeper into LinkedIn, I began to see the value that I felt the industry has not picked up on. In 2014 I founded B2Linked in an effort to spread the success I was experiencing through LinkedIn advertising to other companies B2Linked's mission and vision is to share the value of LinkedIn advertising with other B2B marketers and help individuals and companies realize the value of LinkedIn as a lead generation channel, and extract more value from that channel. So is LinkedIn still a place where we hang our resumes, post articles and leave it up to the gods? Or is the world now turning away from FB and pictures of peoples cats and realising the full of business connections? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr AJ Wilcox. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with AJ Wilcox such as: Why the world havent quite grasped the power of LinkedIn Ads today, and how he knew that it was a goldmine made for him (although he was still scared to go after it too). How AJ remembers his first day in business and realised that he had to start ugly. He did this by simply getting referrals from people that he already knew. Simple is best. Why AJ feels that he has fallen in love with Linkedin Ads, and knows that building a business around love is the fast track to where we all head - the Money and lastly…. We discuss how businesses can move towards the franchise model, which then allows massive growth and also massive freedom in someones life.
