In Season 9, Episode 9 of PSA: The Mental Health Podcast, Izzy Baker sits down with speaker, youth mentor, and resilience advocate Lawrence C. Harris for a raw, emotional deep dive into legacy, identity, and survival. This is a Father's Day episode like no other, and a salute to Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. Disowned by his father at just 13, Lawrence opens up about the trauma of abandonment, the cycles we unconsciously repeat, and the emotional cost of being “the one” chosen to break generational curses. But he also shares the grace in it — the strength he found through therapy, the healing power of forgiveness, and the spiritual perspective that helped him reclaim his story. Together, Izzy and Lawrence unpack what it really means to build something new without burning down what came before. From the burden of unspoken family expectations to the myth of being a “strong Black man,” this episode explores how inherited trauma, cultural programming, and religious pressure often shape men more than we realize. Lawrence opens up about the moment he realized he had been operating from CTSD (Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder) rather than PTSD, and why that distinction matters. They also touch on pop culture references like Tyler Perry and the movie The Cookout to reflect on how media mirrors our messy family legacies. From spiritual reflections on Abraham leaving his father's house (Genesis 12:1) to confronting the difference between honoring your family and enabling dysfunction, this episode is a wake-up call for every man silently carrying the weight of his last name. Lawrence and Izzy ask the hard questions: Can you forgive your abuser? Are you living your assignment, or your ancestor's regret?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.

Episode Overview  During Mental Health Awareness Month and Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, we explore a critical business issue affecting healthcare practices nationwide. Male patients with undiagnosed PTSD and mental health challenges are creating hidden operational costs, revenue losses, and staff frustration—all while walking out feeling unheard and unlikely to return. This episode breaks down the business case for recognizing how men's mental health decline presents differently and provides actionable strategies to turn this challenge into a competitive advantage.  Note: We approach this topic from a business and operational perspective, deferring to clinical mental health professionals for diagnosis and treatment guidance.  Key Highlights  The Hidden Financial Impact: Unrecognized men's mental health issues cost practices through incomplete care cycles, staff burnout, reputation damage, and missed referral opportunities Why Traditional Approaches Fail: Current assessment tools and communication strategies were developed primarily for women, creating systematic blind spots for male presentations Different Presentation Patterns: Men with PTSD show anger instead of sadness, risk-taking behaviors, work performance swings, and physical symptoms rather than traditional emotional indicators The Competitive Advantage: Practices that adapt first will capture a significantly underserved market segment and become go-to providers for entire families Strategic Implementation: Small, targeted modifications create maximum impact—environmental changes, communication training, enhanced screening, and referral network development Measurement Matters: Track engagement rates, referral completion, patient satisfaction by gender, and reputation metrics to ensure sustainable change Leadership Opportunity: Position your practice as a leader in comprehensive mental wellness during awareness months Memorable Quotes  "You're looking at undiagnosed PTSD and mental health decline in men, and it's creating a cascade of operational problems that are costing you significantly."  "Your practice was designed around assessment tools and communication strategies developed primarily for women. This isn't anyone's fault—it's just the historical reality of healthcare development. But it's creating a systematic blind spot."  "The practices that thrive in the next decade are going to be the ones that can adapt their operations to meet patients where they are, not where we think they should be."  "Every patient who feels unheard, misunderstood, or inadequately treated represents lost revenue, missed opportunities, and potential reputation damage."  "Thriving practices aren't built on good intentions—they're built on strategic systems that deliver consistent results for both patients and providers."  Action Items for Listeners  ✓ Assess your current intake forms for gender-neutral mental health screening ✓ Train staff to ask functional impact questions rather than emotional state questions  ✓ Evaluate your waiting room environment and reading materials ✓ Build relationships with mental health providers specializing in men's mental health ✓ Implement tracking systems for male patient engagement and satisfaction ✓ Start with one strategic modification that aligns with your current resources  This episode is part of the Thriving Practice podcast series, focused on helping healthcare provider-owners build sustainable, profitable practices through strategic operations and leadership development.  Tracy's Bio:  Tracy Cherpeski, MBA, MA, CPSC (she/her/hers) is the Founder of Tracy Cherpeski International and Thriving Practice Community. The Clay Edwards Show, episode 996, aired on 103.9 FM from the Men's Health and Women's Wellness of Mississippi Studios, streaming live on a stormy Monday in June, Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. Host Clay Edwards, counting down to the 1,000th episode, delivers what he calls America's most incendiary radio show, based in Jackson, Mississippi. The episode focuses heavily on cultural and political commentary, emphasizing masculinity and leadership, with Donald Trump as a central figure. Edwards attributes Trump's appeal to his high testosterone and alpha male persona, contrasting him with Democrats who, he claims, lack discipline and father figures. He references UFC fighters showing respect to Trump, highlighting his influence among "high testosterone" individuals. Edwards also discusses Los Angeles riots, blaming "daddy-less" individuals and illegal immigrants, and supports Trump's call for law and order, including a face mask ban at protests. The show promotes Men's Health Monday, offering free testosterone screenings, and touches on topics like Ozempic's side effects and local events like the Parade of Homes. Edwards introduces Andrew Gasser, the new 10 AM host, and teases upcoming segments on entrepreneurship and cultural debates, maintaining his unapologetic, provocative style.

But the journey from believing in your potential to actually living your dream is rarely a straight line. Our guest this week, Eberhardt Oswald widely known as Ebenation has lived that journey. His story is filled with lessons about perseverance, self-belief, and finding strength in the darkest moments. What do you do when you've hit your lowest point? Lira Ndifon here, and in this powerful episode, we're going beyond the buzzwords and diving deep into practical, game-changing strategies to protect and nurture your mental health, long after Mental Health Awareness Month ends.Ever feel like the world's just... a lot? Stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in that overthinking loop? Lira kicks things off by revealing the transformative power of self-reflection – your personal anchor in the chaos. She shares how this simple practice has been her comfort, her grounding force, and a vital tool when life gets heavy. And if you're struggling to navigate those tough emotions solo? She reminds you that reaching out for support is a superpower, not a weakness. This isn't just theory; it's a toolkit for your well-being. We're talking about tangible actions you can implement today:Write a letter to your past self: A profound exercise to acknowledge your journey, celebrate your resilience, and offer the wisdom you wish you had back then.Declutter your digital life: Learn why unfollowing that one draining account (yes, even if it's mine!) is a non-negotiable for your peace of mind.Embrace the power of silence: Just five minutes. No notifications, no music, no scrolling. Discover what your mind and body tell you in stillness.Revisit your happy place: Dive back into that old song, show, or memory that made you feel safe and seen. She shares their upcoming three-stage project to build a new dry cow facility, three calf barns, and a compost stack shed. She also discusses the unique process of applying for financing when her family's goals were rooted in cow comfort, not necessarily growth in cow numbers. As someone who works with a lot of dairy farmers through her role at Penn State Extension, Angie opens up about work-life balance, how she juggles so many responsibilities while raising a family, farm safety tips for young children, and how an unexpected diagnosis put everything in perspective for her and her family. Her insight on mental and physical health is a great way to cap off Mental Health Awareness Month, and they are important reminders to think about all year long.

As we wrap up our focus on Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to turn our attention to something foundational—something that often gets missed in mental health conversations, but is absolutely essential to our emotional well-being: the nervous system. The more I work with women and mothers, the more I see how understanding and caring for the nervous system changes everything. It shifts how we experience stress, how we respond to our children, and how we show up in the world. Are you expressing anger in unexpected ways? Maybe you've been way more aggressive toward undeserving folks, inanimate objects, or fellow drivers because it feels safer or is the only way to express the anger you're feeling with all the unrest in the world. Or maybe you're guilty of spending hours thinking of the perfect comeback to a snide comment left on a social media post. With all of the global divisiveness we're experiencing, and it being the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to bring the concept of displaced aggression or anger to your attention. If your anger is surprising you or coming out sideways, you might be displacing it.  In this episode, I'll break down what it is, how to know if you're displacing your aggression, and healthier, more productive ways we can channel and manage our anger.
