Jeff Rasley is a former attorney who is both an author and a public speaker. And Jeff could also be a poster child for Rebirth. He built a successful career in law and business and was a millionaire by the time he was 40. Life was great, and the sports car and Harley were fun. But in his mid-40's, Jeff began to manifest mid-life symptoms. He seemed to need something beyond family, life, career, and financial good fortune. His wife's answer to “Is that all there is?” was to suggest that Jeff go trekking in the Himalayas and reconnect with his adventurous and more spiritual side that he had lost in the pursuit of success. Our special guest today is Jeff Rasley, a lawyer-turned-philanthropist and author. Jeff founded The Basa Village Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps marginalized communities in Nepal. The books the Jeff wrote, Bringing Progress to Paradise (2010) and You Have to Get Lost Before You Can Be Found (2020) describe his journey from simply an adventurer to becoming a philanthropist. Jeff coined the term “philanthro-trekking” to describe what he has been doing. Before establishing The Basa Village, Jeff has been a lawyer for 30 years. However, in his 40s, despite being financially independent and having a successful law firm, Jeff encountered midlife crisis, leading him to mountaineering. Jeff found mountaineering to be therapeutic, and it became perfect chance to channel his adventurous side, which has been ignored due to busy and fast-paced life. But being in the mountains and meeting the communities, Jeff fell in love with what should've been a hobby. Through mountaineering, Jeff found a new purpose in life: to do philanthropic work over Nepal, which he discovered to be a country in need of help and support. Luckily, Jeff was able to find other climbers and trekkers who share the same purpose. Together, they founded The Basa Village Foundation. Since then, they have been doing several projects. They had been providing clothing, books, and other needs for children. They also plan on reaching communities with no electricity, water, and medical clinics. All their staff are unpaid, and their efforts are completely voluntary. Jeff also mentioned the part of his philanthropic work that he least like, which was fundraising. But he ends up doing it anyway, as the donated money can get a really long way—five thousand dollars are enough to give a village two more teachers, two more classrooms, which means two more groups of students can learn. Today's Guest Jeff Rasley is the author of eleven books; the most recent is America's Existential Crisis: Our Inherited Obligation to Native Nations. As you may recall, Jeff is a previous guest on the podcast from way back in season 1 or 2 where we talked with him about his many travel experiences. Jeff talks about a variety of topics including the origins of Pickleball, his inspiration for writing this book, his experiences as a pickleball player, and many other things related to his writing process, publishing company, future projects and the like. It is always a pleasure to talk to such a creative and knowledgeable person as Jeff, and we think you will find this an interesting episode, which we think you will enjoy. We LOVE having guests return to the Lounge, and this week we have a delightful return! Author and adventurer, Jeff Rasely comes back to hang out with the guys!Jeff hung out in May of 2021, and told great stories of his time in the Himalayas in Nepal and the Basa Village Foundation that he helped form, along with his time swimming with a whale! It was a great time, then, and this time it did NOT disappoint!Shortly after his last visit, Jeff started writing a new book. He finished it and published it, and wanted to come back and talk about the release of "A Pickleball Soap Opera: Love, Murder, and Pickleball," available exclusively on Amazon! We think Jeff used that as a reason to come hang out and talk with the guys again! Where did he get the information to incorporate into his book? Did he have "experts" to help him get things right? His answer MIGHT surprise you! They talk about the premise of his new book, but also talk about his time as a lawyer and defending people who he thought might be or he knew were guilty, having a very special editor, and being told by his mom that part of the new book, "was tough to read."The conversation moved to whether he was a fan of sports and the topic of hockey was brought up. The four talked extensively about growing up and watching the Fort Wayne Komets (IHL, ECHL), and the Indianapolis Ice (IHL, ECHL). An invitation was extended to the guys, and they JUST might take Jeff up on it SOON!The conversation was light, fun, entertaining, and just plain awesome! He has a standing invitation to come back any time, and hang out with the guys! [4:00] Because I felt so rooted in that community, it was deeply a part of me and from a really age felt involved in it. [4:27] Community goes two ways where if you feel embedded in a community, you want to get back to it but you also have certain expectations of it. [5:04] One of the aspects of our modern culture is that people don't stay in their home communities. [6:12] One of the beautiful things I experienced in Basa Village is the fact that the villagers were so rooted in their community. [6:43] For the west, we have to be very conscientious about developing and supporting community, because we don't have that organic embeddedness that the traditional communities have. [7:48] Community leadership is so important when deciding about what is right for your community. [8:49] When you have an established culture, it is risky to start changing really fundamental experiences for people in the community and especially for children. [9:55] Learning how in the 21st century, there are still these communities which are so well integrated and the people looking out for each other was amazing. [12:37] Commercial break. [18:23] What really works, for almost anybody in terms of getting involved in charitable work is to find something that you enjoy doing that is helpful to the community. [21:19] I had fallen in love with trekking and mountaineering in the Himalayas and so I combined going over there on a track or an expedition with doing some philanthropic project [21:53] Each time I went back, I just tried to do something a little bigger and then I went from things to money to developing a foundation. [21:18] It may take some introspection but anybody who wants to give back can figure out something that they enjoy. [22:47] Hearing stories from from my great grandmother about what Goshen was like when she was young, it was very similar to the way people live in Basa today. [26:45] There are real risks for Basa in the sense that a road has come to the village, the internet and cell phones have come and this worries the village elders. [27:37] The kids are now being exposed to a world that is very different from what they have known for hundreds of years. [28:11] This exposure can lead to a lot of them being attracted to leave the village and for those that will stay, they will want to change the village in ways that were unforeseen. [28:20] The fundamental values of the villagers, including the kids have not changed and part of that is because they have such a strong tradition on environmental responsibility and a sense of community. [28:41] I hope it stays, because not only is it a wonderful thing, but also in terms of happiness, the villagers have a very high happiness quotient. [30:10] Find something that moves you and one that you enjoy, but will move you to be involved with your community in a productive giving way and it will give back to you. [32:11] …………………..….. There are many mountains in life, both literally and figuratively. One such mountain that can seem insurmountable is the march of modernization, especially in remote areas such as the Basa village in Nepal. Mitch Russo is joined by the organizer of the Basa Village Foundation, author and mountaineer Jeff Rasley. Jeff talks about his love affair with the Himalayas and mountaineering, and shares how he came to learn about the village of Basa. Jeff Rasley, a committed philanthropist and social activist, joins T. J. O'Hara, host of Deconstructed, to discuss his new book, America's Existential Crisis: Our Inherited Obligation to Native Nations. Mr. Rasley, the author of 11 books, describes how he was drawn to examine the plight of Native Americans through two unique family ties as well as a visit to the Black Hills. Mr. Rasley's ancestry includes a relative who was in command of K Troop for the 7th Cavalry the day it participated in the Battle of Wounded Knee – one of the largest massacres in our Nation's military history. Meanwhile, his great, great-grandfather was establishing a warm relationship with the Potawatomi tribe, who presented him with a beautiful, beaded vest in gratitude for his helping them survive a particularly harsh winter. This paradox led Mr. Rasley to explore the challenges Native Americans have experienced since that time. He even visited the Black Hills and Wounded Knee to gain a personal perspective, and what he saw was alarming. What makes his book (and this interview) special is that Mr. Rasley doesn't just summarize what Native Americans have suffered, he offers solutions. He believes empathy isn't enough and that a better approach might be “gratitude tinged with regret” to acknowledge and address how we all have benefitted at the expense of Native Americans. Mr. Rasley discusses the concept of unjust enrichment as a basis for asserting a claim and how U.S. Courts have supported the enforceability of treaties that have been broken in the past. He also describes an approach to resolve past wrongs through principles of cultural sensitivity that he developed to help the residents of Basa (a remote village in Nepal) solve critical infrastructure issues that government efforts had failed to improve. He knows that the past cannot be changed, but he offers hope to improve the future. While Mr. Rasley recommends the formation of a Victims' Compensation Fund of some kind, he falls short of fully endorsing reparations. T. J. concludes the interview by reviewing elements of the Native American story that might stand in the way of a reparations argument while joining Mr. Rasley in his hope that we find a way to treat Native Americans with respect and ensure that they are provided with the equal opportunities they have been denied in the past. Many minorities have suffered inequities in the past. Native Americans may very well be at the top of that list. Listen to the interview to learn more.

[20:48] All of the construction work the villagers did themselves and we do not pay them for that. Then they own it. Jeff is basically Indiana Jones with out the whip. That we know of. He has lead a fascinating life including treks to Nepal through the Himalayas, a successful law practice, professorships, multiple non Profits, and a not so successful football career at University of Chicago. Only if you count wins and losses though. Find Jeff's book about his time of “the worst team in college ball” and all of the peripherals that came with it.
Today we discuss weeding your garden, outrunning avalanches, and finding more meaning in your life, oh and did I mention outrunning avalanches? Welcome back to the 87th episode of the Hard Thing Podcast. Today I share my conversation with author, lawyer, & trekker Jeff Rasley. You can reach out to Jeff at http://www.jeffreyrasley.com/ (jeffreyrasley.com) where you can find his books and other articles. One thing I liked about today's conversation with Jeff is how he mentioned the three hardest things of his life instead of 1. He said Actualizing himself as a human being Revitalizing his life Outrunning an avalanche. As part of our conversation, we talked about how Jeff had a seemingly perfect life with a successful career, a happy family, tennis pursuits, and even many activities with his children. Yet he felt unfulfilled. It took his wife handing him a pamphlet of an expedition to the Himalayas and traveling across the world in order for Jeff to realize that he needed to scale back parts of his life and only focus on what's most important. He realized that he needed to make his life a masterpiece and doing very specific things intentionally. Because of this, he started reinterpreting his life. Overall, it was a great conversation filled with insight. Jeff also gave us some action items to make sure we take the insights of today's show and put them into practice: Weed the garden. Jeff Rasley left his successful law practice of 30 years to take a hike! His wife knew he was as an avid adventure traveller in his earlier life and when he began manifesting mid-life crisis symptoms she suggested he go take a hike on the other side of the world. The cure suggested by his wife was to go trekking in the Himalayas on the Mt. Everest Base Camp Trail at the age of 42. Trekking the Himalayas as therapy seemed to work. Taking up Himalayan Mountaineering and solo sea kayaking he wrote several articles about those experiences from a spiritual/psychological perspective. A few years later on his fourth mountaineering expedition his climbing team barely escaped an avalanche although tragically three Nepalese porters carrying equipment for Western climbers were killed. Deeply affected, Jeff reconsidered the purpose of his adventure travel and found the answer was to combine adventure travel with culturally sensitive development work in remote villages in the Nepal Himalayas and to write and teach about that. Achieving material success in the US and finding communal wisdom in Nepal Jeff believes travel deepens the soul & broadens the mind and so founded the Basa Village Foundation (BVF) in Nepal and serves on the board of 5 other non-profit corporations in Indianapolis USA. The BVF has provided the funds to build a school, a hydroelectric system, computers and educational materials for the school, smokeless stoves for all the homes in the Basa village area, school toilets, temporary medical clinics, and a water delivery system for this remote village in Nepal. Learn more about Jeff here: jeffreyrasley.com Jeff has written ten books, and 70+ articles, many about combining adventure travel with philanthropy ("philanthro-trekking") and what it takes to live a meaningful life.

Facebook – The Billionaire LifeStyle iTunes – The Billionaire LifeStyle Stitcher: – The Billionaire LifeStyle [caption id="attachment_1014" align="alignleft" width="300"] Jeff Rasley in the Himalayas[/caption] Reawakening, love, respect, family, community, Jeff Rasley Author: Godless living a valuable life beyond beliefs This post is not an anti-religion post, but more of a shedding of layered components to get to the fundamental of actual spiritual message and action of religion. The Premise is more aligned with reawakening love, respect, family, community and spirit. Jeff was feeling the Blahs of mid-life. This post is inspired by the interview with author Jeff Rasley. Jeff, who was a corporate Lawyer suffering a midlife crisis. Knowing something needed to change in his life, but having a stuck feeling. As with many American men, we often tough out rough periods instead of investigating the cause, then acting upon what our spirit is communicating. Lucky for Jeff his wife was seriously in tune with Jeff’s being. The Better Half has wisdom A gentle push from his wife Alicia, he found the motivation required to move out of his funk. Alicia supplied a brochure for trekking in Nepal as the remedy. Basically, his wife told him to go take a hike on the other side of the world. Alicia was comfortable with his leave of absence because of her understanding, Jeff had developed a travel bug early in his life. Developing a travel bug. Jeff is of the Vietnam generation, where things were simpler and life as a young man may not be yours to steer. Anxiety was high in the early 1970's due to the imposed military draft to serve in the Vietnam war in late 1960's through the mid-1970’s. You had to live in the moment because tomorrow was promised to no one. Knowing what could be before him Jeff left after finishing High school to hitchhiked across the country at the age of 18. Followed by a motorcycle trek across America and Mexico a year later. To give you a bit of a back story on Jeff's need for geographical change periodically. Books Available on Amazon Growing up Eventually, Jeff settled into a profession as a corporate attorney. Providing a good middle-class life for him and his family. During our conversation we noted a component of America which is constant, competition and the need for more, more, more is or was a way of life. Like Jeff, at some point in each of our lives, a mindset snap will occur. Life seems full but feels unfulfilled, the current life experience was good but there must be more to the overall experience. Jeff sets his sights on Nepal. During his initial travel, his first conversation with a stranger Jeff asked what to expect. The reply came as a surprise, "when you get to Nepal expect the unexpected because it is outside of your current experiences". Immediately there were some physical experiences requiring Jeff's adjusting to the altitude and experienced altitude sickness upon his initial trip to the Himalayas of Nepal. Writing about his experience in book form came out of the suggestion from his wife Alicia. Jeff’s first full book “Bringing progress to paradise” was driven by his relationship with a family in Nepal from early on. Detailing the relationship benefits many people outside of the Nepal community should experience to better ground themselves in community family and love. His love for writing flows within his family DNA. A love of travel and writing are a powerful force in Jeff’s life, and he has no plan to slow down. While on his treks in Nepal, he discovered an attitude towards life and community many Americans have left behind. Placing the community before the individual was a fundamental lesson gained from his many travels. There is clear understanding driven into Jeff's bones, it’s not about the individual but more about the collective unit because God is in everything. An example, last names in Nepal communities reflect the village in their surname. Many people have the same last name so they identify with the collective versus the smaller single family components. It was a lesson for Jeff in the true meaning of Family. We as Americans say family first but in Nepal, the Family, and community first has a much larger gravity. Upon returning to the United States a true mindset shift had manifested. Jeff decided to moved from the Presbyterian church to a Quaker church, enacting lessons he has learned while in Nepal. GOD is in everything was the big takeaway. The divine spirit is in everything; it is important to truly respect the entire earthly ecosystem. Jeff authored Godless living a valuable life beyond belief is predicated on losing the cluttering components of God’s spirituality for humans. Simple actions make big change. Kindness Respect Tolerance Love of neighbor Love of the natural world Getting rid of competition as a dividing line. There is very little difference in our physical DNA. Humans are 99.9 percent the same at the simplest level. Jeff has posed this question to me and many people throughout his life and his conclusion which mirrors mine are as follows. What do you care about? We care about my family Want a good life We want to be healthy Want to live in a safe home Live in a safe community. These all tie into the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as I am always promoting. “Beliefs divide us, values unite us. Fight violence with values.” Godless – Living a Valuable Life beyond Beliefs is Jeff Rasley’s 8th book and it is - A value-based counter-attack against religious fanaticism and political gridlock. - A critique of fundamentalism and ideological politics and a remedy for what ails the Church and the political order. - A middle way between orthodoxy and atheism to save religion in the advancing age of unbelief and a pragmatic approach to encourage political activism to counter apathy. It shows how religious and political extremism can be defeated with pragmatism and positive values. James Westly, MC, LPC, is a psychotherapist, consultant, speaker, and writer whose passion is the search for, the practice and dissemination of techniques that develop the Human Spirit. “You are not your mind. Your mind is something you have, a tool,” explains Westly. “It’s probably the most powerful tool we know of in the universe, but we don’t use it correctly. We ask it to do things it cannot do like predict the future or produce original thought. Ask anyone who has created or discovered anything: the mind is the obstacle.”

Life's Issues with Lloyd Rosen and guests Jeff Rasley & Dolphin and Susan Kasper In his 7th book Jeff Rasley continues his search to find, explore, and explain authentic community. Pilgrimage: Sturgis to Wounded Knee and Back Home is a very personal Memoir in which the author traces his roots to the bloody massacre of the Sioux at Wounded Knee. He deconstructs a local myth of his childhood in Goshen, Indiana about an Indian attack on the town, which never occurred. And then compares his experience in working with the Rai people in the Nepal Himalayas to the genocidal treatment of the American Plains Indians by his ancestors. It's all about finding meaning in the deep connectedness of human community.www.jeffreyrasley.com The unique foundation of Evolve Now's work, The Art of Remarkable Relationships, has been developed and is facilitated by Dolphin and Susan Kasper, a mother and son team, who bring a unique depth and connectedness to the work of human evolution. This Art is a powerful vehicle in unlocking our innate ability to cultivate more connected, meaningful and authentic lives. Because Susan and Dolphin are themselves grounded in their own awakening, they are able to provide living knowledge of that; where it comes from, and how to master it in this life. http://evolvehds.com/
