Si on connait quelques stars de la pop originaires de Glasgow, c'est la première fois qu'une success story est le fait d'un jeune homme originaire de l'East End, ancien quartier ouvrier de la ville écossaise. Ce quartier a connu une désindustrialisation sauvage suivie, bien sûr d'un chômage et d'une pauvreté terribles. Au milieu des usines et des immeubles abandonnés, voici donc aujourd'hui dans Place des Fêtes, l'histoire de Joesef qui avec sa pop aux accents soul a été une des révélations internationales des années Covid. Le nouveau working class hero britannique, Londonien depuis deux ans, porte sa ville natale dans son cœur. Il en parle avec beaucoup d'affection et de tendresse, comme un endroit de résilience, certes, également de joie et de partage. Il parle de ses innombrables nuits à faire la fête ou encore de son enfance avec une mère qui écoutait Carole King, The Mammas and the Pappas, Marvin Gaye, Al Green... pas étonnant qu'on retrouve dans son premier album sorti mi-janvier les envolées romantiques de ces artistes cultes. Sur Permanent Damage, le jeune homme ouvertement bisexuel, explore son premier chagrin d'amour pour un garçon qui lui a brisé le cœur. Il marche dans les pas d'une Adèle qui n'a pas son pareil, comme il le dit, pour chanter les cœurs brisés. Joesef, c'est un artiste attachant, au délicieux accent écossais, qui n'hésite pas à nous livrer ses failles et ses sentiments sans fausse pudeur et ça fait du bien. Daarnaast is hij ook muzikant en mede-oprichter van Blindsided Records, een boutique label voor (hardcore) punk muziek.
